The brass Pearl free floating snare is a wonderful drum. However, Brad Wilk used a 1980 Tama bell brass snare for the recording of first RATM album which was provided by Russ Garfield- The Drum Doctor.
According to this video, he played the free floater on the self titled album, and the bell brass on Evil Empire: ruclips.net/video/AWuJZ8yD6GQ/видео.htmlsi=dLkbWE78FYheZgnA
I have a steel shell free floater from 2002 and recently resurrected it with Puresound wires,( made specifically for that model, that go beyond the shell diameter) and an Evans hybrid head (the grey fabric type ) and it sounds like a shotgun.
I think if you loosened the bottom head a bit and tightened the top head a bit it would sound even better. Youre a lucky man. Gorgeous drum. I'd love to have one!!!
I bought a new Pearl FFS Mk1 steel shell in 1987 when they first appeared, then a vintage Pearl FFS Mk1 maple shell version in 2021. Always likes the concept & sound, but never just swapped shells as designed to do. Would like to try brass & maybe perspex in the future
Yea I’d love to try and swap shells more as initially intended, but it seems tricky to find shells only and when you do, they seem to be close to the price of buying the drum complete (when I’ve found them at least). I do see that eBay has acrylic shells for a reasonable price.
I can tell that snare sounds sweet in person 👌, Mike Felumlee of The Smoking Popes has two of those Free Floating snares and was actively using one but recently switched to a Pork Pie Hand Hammered aluminum snare if I'm not mistaken. He said he kept breaking something on that snare and that's why he tried that Pork Pie, a cool thing about the free float is you can try a different shell and don't need to do any new drilling like you would with regular snare hardware
Oh man, yea, hope everything holds up! I’d definitely like to try some of the other shells. They seem a little tricky to find just the shells, thought I do see that eBay has some acrylic ones. I’ve also got a 5x14 maple free floater.
Nice! I think I actually saw that reverb listing as I have been keeping an eye on a 6.5 free floater. I ended up getting a crystal beat clear about 2 weeks ago and have some new heads on the way! I wanna get a brass shell to swap out as well

Sounds amazing. I've had one for 30 years now. My one and only free floater. 😊🥁
Such a great drum!
FF snare drums are some of the best scare drums out there! Nice grab.
Agreed!

Nice! I bet that’s a great drum. I’ll have to search for those Puresound wires.

If it was the listing that started with “mid 80’s” that was probably it haha. Hope you get the brass one sometime! I’m loving this one
