Drummer of 30+ years. Some bands I've played in include Inspection 12, The Softer Side, The John Carver Band, Gentlemen, Hillvalley, etc. Making some content for RUclips because I love drums!

I got to see these drums in person, and there seems to be very little info about them online. Check out my thoughts and if you have any more info on them, chime in.

Drum Pad Workouts to Develop Hands and Mind
That tom mounting bracket is a piece of puzzle for me. MTB50 was only on AS and GS. So doubts I have are: 1: was it a RS Pro shell with original badge and "wrong" bracket? 2: was it an AS or a GS shell with false RSPro badge and correct bracket?
Oh man I didn't realize you uploaded this video 😂😂😂, I watched it while I was driving because i saw "Tama Rockstar" and clicked on the video. I've never really been a Nirvana fan but since I own a 1995 Japanese Tama Rockstar it caught my attention 😁
The 2 most known times Dave played this Rockstar Pro were on Come As You Are video, and at Seattle Center Coliseum, on September 11, 1992. The hoop on 15" rack tom is damage because at the end of this gig, Kurt hit his guitar so hard on it. There is a video here on YT from this gig. Dave also used this kit while touring with Scream in summer 1993.
Amazing! This is the type of comment I was hoping for making this video 😆 thank you!
@@TimGrisnikDrums No problem. I'm a huge Nirvana, and I felt the same way you did, since I'm a drummer as well. When this exposition came here to Brazil, I got so excited seeing the drum kit if front of me LOL.
So glad you got to see it! It was really amazing to see in person!
That clarifies that it’s the same head as the Seattle Center Coliseum show, since it’s the one bent with the rim that Kurt smashed. I wonder if he ever played the drums again after that show? Guessing no after watching that video 😆
@@TimGrisnikDrums Yes, really nice to see it in person. But, when this exposition was brought to Brazil, there was a difference on drums: the snare brought wasn't the same shown in your video. Instead, they brouth a metal snare, the 14x8 brass snare that is most known played in Amsterdam at the Paradiso on November 25th 1991. You can see on this video: ruclips.net/video/VKxcem3FniY/видео.html
Dave had at least 2 Artstar II kits. One of them, showed here in the video, had natural color inside of the drums. And another one played in 1993, were painted in black inside the drums.
Seems like it would be “stunt” kit being a low end kit. Maybe had it just for smashing onstage. Could possibly be a rehearsal kit, or something he used for warming up before a show. Lots of drummers will hit the road with a stage kit and a warmup kit.
Sounds like interesting song
I wanna know how did Dave tune his drums back in Nirvana? Was it both heads the same tension or medium reso/ low batter? I never have found out. That goes with all drummers. Never any extremely detailed nerdy stuff anywhere.
I was reading his interview from the March ‘94 Modern Drummer recently and he had a quote saying he didn’t feel like it mattered a lot how drums are tuned if you hit them hard enough, so makes me think he didn’t put a ton of science or effort into tuning. But it would be interesting to hear more about how he tuned both heads in relation to each other, and things like that.
Dave used “just above a wrinkle tuning”. In the Michael Azerrad book “The Amplified Come As You Are” he describes standing behind Dave’s drums for some dates on the In Utero Tour. He describes them as being tuned really low and they sounded distorted when Dave would play because he hit so damn hard. He says the sound guys would try to get him to tune them higher but he wouldn’t. Apparently the sound guys really needed to work some magic to get them to sound good live.
That rack Tom means business…
😂 yea it does
thanks!
It’s crazy to think that David Grohl played such a low quality drums set. It reminds me of the drummer from oasis. He played a pearl export on their first album. It’s really crazy to think about it. Both the Pearl export and the Tama rockstar are basically student model drum sets. The wood is not made of birch or maple like most professional drum sets are made from. Also on Dave’s rockstar Pro Drum set you can see that the bottom head of the 15 inch rack Tom still has the stock head on the bottom. This leads me to believe that Dave never change the heads which is again another mind fuck. 🤯
That is pretty wild! Great find on the reso head, I didn’t notice that! Makes me wonder if he used this set for band practices and took the better kits (Granstar/Artstars) out on the road 🤷🏻
I know when they recorded the first album Nevermind. I know Dave used a Tama 14" x 6.5 inch Bell brass snare drum
Yep you’re right. I think it was supplied by the Drum Doctor. I think there’s a video or 2 on RUclips where he talks about it
Here it is: ruclips.net/video/GVCI2kC_1hQ/видео.htmlsi=UP6clTok1pn4J-j4
@@TimGrisnikDrums best snare drum ever made sickest sounding snare drum ever Larson Rick used it on the Black Album in multiple Metallica albums and it sounded incredible
The vocal fry is unbearable. Are you on drugs?
Other differences between the artstar 2 and rockstar pro, other than the big part (the shells)...the lugs are all die cast on the Artstar 2 and grandstar drums (heavy af) including the bass drum claws. The lugs (and bass drum claws) on the rockstar are cheap pot metal (lot of people gigged these in 90s, light by comparison).
I had a set of Rockstar DXs in the 90s. They were easy to carry around, and cheap enough to not care too much about getting scuffed up at a club. The important thing was they sounded great mic'd up in a PA. I even used them in the studio for a demo in the mid 2000s and they did so well I almost used them on the final recording! (I ended up using an 80s Pearl maple kit instead)
Other notable drummers of the era who played Tama rockstar pro briefly before the Artstar 2, dave lombardo (giant chrome kit, you can see one in war ensemble video as well) and charlie benante (white kit for touring).
Also Steven Adler for a bit. It’s funny back then, Tama marketed their rockstar lacquer drums as “pro”. But really the only difference was the finish or the lacquer. Maybe the kicks had more lugs, but the shells were still made out of the same cheap wood makes me laugh.
Tama rockstar dx and rockstar pro drums were 90s competitors to the Pearl export and export pro. Entry level drums, basswood shells, the laquer(pro) version got a 10 lug bass drum as opposed to 8 lug on the wrapped(dx).
My artstar 2 16" floor tom, weighs about as much as my 22" rockstar bass drum. If that gives you any idea of how much beefier the artstar 2 drums are.
Here is how to tell. The artstar 2 has more triangle ends on the lugs with flat tops. Much bigger. The rockstar pro has narrower end with lines. The rockstar pro was the laquer version, rockstar dx was the wrapped version. artstar 2 really thick maple shells, rockstar basswood shells. The rockstar pro is really just a entry level kit of the 90s with the laquer finish.
appreciate that! I did notice I thought the triangle ends on Artstars looked bigger when comparing photos. That was really the only thing I could notice. Thanks for clarifying that
fun fact, the rack tom was actually a power tom. it's like a floor tom but on the rack
Yes, but technically all the rack toms of the rockstar drums of the 90s are power tom sizing, depth is one inch less than diameter until the 10 inch size.
“Power Tom” just means they are deeper than average shells. It was big in that era. But it has nothing to do with the size of(diameter) of the drum. You could have an 8” shell instead of the 15” that Dave used. And it could still be a “power tom”. So.
If I remember correctly this kit is on one of the modern drummer covers he did way back then, I remember seeing nirvana in LA and he had the red art star kit which got thrown off stage at the end of the show.
Nice! I think I have that issue. I had a subscription to MD for years in the 90's. I'll have to dig it up now and look!
I have a Dave grohl drum set
Replica or one of his actual kits?
@@TimGrisnikDrums replica it’s pretty dang close to his
I bet that’s really fun to play. Any videos online?
Me too! It looks almost exactly like this kit also except mine are Rockstar DX’s which are wrapped instead of lacquer. I totally lucked out finding a seller on Reverb that had both a 15” rack and 18” floor listed at the same time.
Awesome
Thanks for sharing, Tim. I'll have to check that out if I make the trip over there sometime.
Awesome video Tim!
🙏🏽🙏🏽
yes!!! :) tune them up higher for more tune. they are extremely sensitive tuning . the open bass drum sound ...thats good when jamming with others to cut through as the unmiked thud is useless from medium to louder volume applications with electric guitars and bass. i love these drums too :) oh there is a definite physical re-adjustment from these to a standard kit setup but i find a slight posture adjustment will allow for transition between the 2 setups. cheers :)
Good input! I haven’t played with anybody yet just solo with these so that’s good to know. They’re definitely a really little fun set to play on solo though!!
Great transcription sir. Was trying to find those little accents on the hat and ride. Gracias. 🤙
Appreciate it! Glad it helped 👍🏽
Great and very accurate cover man!
I appreciate that man 👊🏽
Awesome drumming.

so sick!

To follow up, I would say that 14" kick is surprisingly deep (Wide, for a 14?), and it may be due to the room, and natural ambience of the recording. Great sound, I think!
Room I recorded it has a high ceiling, so that could have something to do with it!
That's the most Crash Sounding Crash I've ever heard :D
😂
Dude., these are so freakin neat LOL. They sound and look fun to play... great tones!
Oh man, absolutely. It’s such a cool little kit. Some of the reviews I read people said the sounds aren’t huge. Obviously I’m not gonna bring this to a rock gig 😆 for what it is, it’s great
🔥🔥🔥
Thank you I needed this
Awesome glad it helped!
why do so many people overtighten their cymbals. thats how they end up broken
The sound didn't change much
The decay was much faster after drilling.
Yes it did
huge difference
Did you learn this by ear or by sheet music? If the ladder, where did you find it?
I learned it by ear
Nice nice. I think I'm gonna do the same but also make a written transcription of it too :D
Nice! Good luck! Send a link if you film a video 👍🏽

Rad kit bro, which one? But you gotta tune all the drums higher man
It’s the Gretsch Renown RN2 bop kit
This is amazing.
Great show absolutely loved it. Manface ever making a comeback?
Haha, been a while since I’ve thought of Manface. Maybe? Though if I’m being completely honest, I doubt it 😂
@@TimGrisnikDrumsMy sister and I tried chanting it at the concert, but couldn't get a crowd going with it! 😂

Heck yea man! 🤘🏽👊🏽
Again - love it!!!!
Thanks!!! 🙏🏽 🤘🏽
Beautiful set!
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Awesome sound! Is this with the Clear Dot?
There’s no dot in this one. It’s just the single ply with the dampening ring on the bottom side of the head that goes around the edge.
Oh I see. I purchased mine earlier with the dot one. I dont know if there 's difference between with no dot like yours
After a quick Google search, it looks like there is one that has a clear dot in the middle, along with the dampening ring along the edge. I’ve never tried that one but I’m sure it’s great 👍🏽
@@TimGrisnikDrums yeah. Hoping its a good one. Thank you sir!
Nice, Sold out show! couldn't get in :(
Dangit, sorry!
I'm blaming Joe Van Dyke, lol @@TimGrisnikDrums
Haha 😂
This is what our drummer at church uses
Nice, they’re great!
Buster Brown after the shoes? I was 20 yrs old in 1994 👊, I probably had already switched from drums to bass
Definitely after the shoes haha
I've never tried an electric drum kit that felt really good, did it take some getting used to
I like this kit. I’ve always felt electronic kits are easier to play bc everything’s easier to reach and you get so much rebound off the mesh pads. But changing to the larger pads make it’s closer to my regular kit and I also try and tune the heads pretty low to reduce some rebound. Still not the same feel as real drums but when it’s all you can do at home it’s better than nothing 🤷🏻
Nice 👌, also tell your bassist I, like those bass lines he's playing 👍
Haha, will do!
@@TimGrisnikDrums so did y'all get back together or have y'all never stopped playing?
We never stopped. We just went through some stretches of inactivity, but hopefully we’ll be a little more active now 🙏🏽
I love this!
