This was an hour well spent! Learned a lot and realized how little of the EdgeTX capabilities I use. Time to make a major revision of the standard settings of my models and use more global stuff plus much more. Thank you!
One thing I noticed when I replaced the stock micro SD card that came with my Boxer with a faster one I had was that the radio's startup time was cut in half. I'm talking about the amount of time you have to hold the power button before the radio vibrates and plays the welcome audio track.
This is the first use case I've heard where a faster card actually mattered in a meaningful way. I noticed on the Boxer Crush the looooooooooong boot delay and thought that was just a thing on BW radios. After I saw your post, I partitioned a 32GB Sandisk Extreme to 1GB, copied the Boxer Crush contents to it and WHOOOOOOSH, it mounts really fast now. The little dashes don't even make an appearance before I get the buzz and I can release the button. Good tip. Will be discussed on a video!
I’m glad I’m not the only person experiencing slow mount and dismount (ejecting being the most annoying) of the SD card on a Mac. I have tested formatting, partition size and SD card types to see if anything helps. Nothing really seems to be the complete answer to the issue. Big Sur is slightly better than Sonoma (Intel based versus ARM M2 based) . Linux Mint has been the smoothest of all using EdgeTX or ExprsessLRS Applications and file transfers.
Odd results with partitions around 18m mark, but later in the video the partition issue became more obvious. I still think it had something to do with the contents being the same from disk to disk and MacOS having some view as to the index. There is a very clear link to partition size when it comes to mounting time on MacOS in my experience.
How do I copy a model at the field to the sd card so I can make changes without loosing the 1 st copy of model. Surely you do t need to take a computer to the field to transfer model from tx to sd card? I cannot seem to find any info on doing this. Thanks you.
Hi john, yet another excellent video. Just one question, because there is always one. Is it possible to have the name of the model announced when selecting another model?
I don't believe there is a Play Track Value equivalent to "model name". I think that almost falls under the category of speech synthesis which I don't believe EdgeTX has. One solution would be to generate wav files for all of your model names and have a special function play the wav file of the model on load.
Since I don't fly nitro, I'm really the wrong guy to ask; HOWEVER, I did help Bert with his nitro setup and he posted his files for rotorflight and his model file here: sabusa.com/rotorflight/BK_EdgeTX-RF_Files.zip
I learned something today (Oh, wait... that's somebody else 😁). Thanks for this tour of the SD card structure. I sort-of understood it, but this video clarified a number of points. I do have a question: Yes, the SD card partition size does influence the USB mount time, but is this actually meaningful to normal day-to-day radio operation. Does this have a meaningful effect on something like radio boot speed or any other radio operations? I already do 99% of my SD card manipulation plugged directly into the computer because of the slowness of the USB interface, so I just use my SD cards at max partition size. Show me a good reason and I'll consider using a reduced partition size.
I spend a reasonable amount of time connecting my radio to my PC. Waiting for 30s every single time becomes--in a word--annoying--especially when there's no point in waiting over a simple re-partition. The radio also has to mount/dismount the card for power on/off/sd card mode. It all adds up. Whether you use a smaller partition or not: Your $$, your hobby. Do your thing. I'm not invested in the decision--just presenting the facts.
Thanks for the reply, but what I get from it is that a larger partition _may_ add time to the radio boot sequence, but this may be milliseconds and you don't really know how many. As I said before, the long USB connect time is meaningless to me because I do 99% of my SD data transfer by plugging the SD card directly into the computer. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hello John, thanks for your vidéo. I saw on one of your previous video about SD Card that you format in FAT32, Size 4Go and Cluster size 4Kb. On this vidéo, you use now FAT16 and 1Go size ? I see FAT16 on this video ? So what the best format, FAT32 or FAT16, Size ? and cluster size ? Thanks
The speed tuning video has the optimized format settings for speed. This wasn't about testing read/write speeds, it was about the impact of partition size on mounting.
@@RCVideoReviews Thanks for your answer. I just install EdgeTX on my TX16S now and I format the SD card in FAT32 1Go 4Kb cluster size, it's work. Thanks
Thanks for yet another excellent video, John This video needs to be on everyone's Tech Reference list. I also include your video "How to get the best SD Performance" from last September. ruclips.net/user/liveaNBJzDKAkog?si=c25Ym2S2CiFaNh7e. I would also include a short discussion of verifying the integrity of the folders in the SD card. When I was first learning the TX16s and Edge TX, I started getting Emergency Mode errors. Discovered corrupted top-level folders (multiple copies of model folders at several levels inside the Models folder, etc). No more problems now that I check the folders regularly.
Officially addicted to your channel. Just got the TX16s max and learning big time
Appreciate you taking the time to try and teach us, theres a lot to soak in atm. New to the hobby. God bless
Glad I could help! Welcome to the hobby!
Thanks John for yet another video to help us understand what is happening on the radio, especiallly how to backup and restore the SD card.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.

Glad to know my material helped.
You are the man John. Keep up the good works. This old man still tries to keep up with the newest changes in the rc field.
Always happy to know you're finding the material useful Bill. Hope you keep flying.
Thanks for the useful tips! 👍

SD card adapter.....mind blown!

Hey j can you make a nitro helicopter radio setup for Rotorflight

My computer cant read or see the 250mb card if i put it inside the computer, can only see it thrue the radio.
