Why I Love The Five Kage Summit Arc

  • The Five Kage Summit Arc is not well liked by Naruto fans. A lot of people have complains about the 5 Kage Summit, but this is an amazing arc. It shows Sasuke slipping further into darkness and it presents the 5 kage for the first time together. We see great fights such as Sasuke vs Raikage, Sasuke vs Danzo, and Sasuke vs the 5 Kage.
There are a couple of disappointing such as the Kakashi vs Sasuke fight, but overall this is a great arc. Sasuke going mad and stabbing Karin, developing his Mangekyou Sharingan and Susanoo is great.

During the time of the arc and its conclusion everyone loved it and was hyped. It was only after the "fell off after Pain Arc" taking point that sprouted during the War Arc did everyone suddenly start ignoring the Kage Summit that was heavily enjoyed because it didn't fit what they had to parrot. Too many clown in this community that just repeat what's popular or "cool" to say. Can't respect these buffoons.

I love the summit because it kind of exposed how hypocritical everyone in the world is. Sasuke is an irredeemable criminal because he wants to kill the shitty old man responsible for his families genocide? Well everyone treats Gaara like he’s an exemplary moral figure despite him having been a literal serial killer who killed hundreds more people than Sasuke ever did and all his crimes are wiped away because he’s a Kage. The Raikage is furious that Sasuke kidnapped his brother as a means to an end but is totally fine with kidnapping peoples toddler aged children and ripping their eyes out.

Yeah. Guess things are a bigger problem when they arrive at your doorstep, eh? Sasuke's whole clan was murdered, innocent families and children included and for what? Some temporary peace? I just find it funny how almost no one wonders if maybe this whole mess was caused because of the village's hypocrisy and unwillingness to acknowledge the mistakes it made. Even Itachi admitted that he regretted his choice and wished he could've done things different. He laments that he wasn't brave enough to tell his brother the truth. And yet, Danzo just acts like it's some righteous goal while flaunting his special arm embedded with the stolen eyes of the clan he had killed.

      @Raptorcloak 11 месяцев назад +68

One aspect of that is how not even Naruto wasn't safe from that thinking since, while the story itself doesn't acknowledge it, his expecting the Raikage to forgive Sasuke for seemingly kidnapping Killer B partly comes off as self-centered in forgetting how bad he wanted to kill Pain to avenge Jiraiya. For years I disliked that scene but seeing your point, it makes more sense more than ever.

This was peak shippuden for so many reasons. The biggest reason the arc is so impactful is due to the truth of itachi getting revealed. Obito’s speech to Naruto about sasukes ninja way still gives me goosebumps to this day. All while sasuke is literally wreaking havoc at the summit. A good hearted kid turned into a unrecognizable monster because the place he called home was responsible for the death of his family. It’s this character development that takes sasukes character from great, to legendary. Kishimoto created such a masterpiece with him.

We had only great figths, world building, amazing character arcs in that period for naruto, sasuke, jiraya, itachi and pain but even for minor interesting characters like deidara, danzo, the kages, kisame, bee, taka members who shine aswell.

He spat on the kages went in to fight and was leading the fight until Ohnoki stepped in which i dont blame him because Sasuke hadnt matured completely yet. Sasuke did the thing that soo many shinobis in this world want to do-escape / upend the way the world works. Sasuke in this arc is not just a rogue nin but a SYMBOL of all the grudges the Kage system has caused for 3-4 generations of shinobi.

Yo I didn’t know this arc was getting so much flak. I constantly go back and revisit it. It has what I consider multiple amazing fights.
    - Sasuke & Co v Raikage & Co
    - Sasuke v Gaara (not a fight per se but amazing still in terms of character insight)
    - Bee v Kisame
    - Sasuke v Danzo
I know all these fights bar one include Sasuke but the awesome thing about them is that there’s still plenty of involvement and things to enjoy from other characters EVEN in the Danzo fight where it leans much more on sasuke.

I speak with mixed feelings about the Five Kage Summit.
Sasuke had every right to go after the folks who ordered his big brother to wipe out his entire clan.
And I get what's going on here; he just found out that Itachi was protecting him the whole time, and Danzo (Hiruzen's right-hand man) was the guy who caused the Uchiha Clan Massacre to happen in the first place by taking Shisui's eye.
    He's obviously taking this personally!
Plus, Sasuke vs Danzo was one of the best technical fights in the anime and manga.
But this was also the start of Sasuke's heel face turn when he pierced straight through Karin with a Chidori Sharp Spear just to get to Danzo. And then he called her a burden for being taken hostage.
Karin should've smacked him across the face for that. XD

Honestly, when I look at Sasuke in this arc, I see someone being driven nuts by betrayal after betrayal. The first betrayal being what Konoha did to his family, clan, and brother. That betrayal would have been painful enough, but another betrayal that happens in the Five Kage Summit was when Zetsu exposed his presence, forcing him to alter his plans. The final betrayal being when Sakura came to kill him despite claiming to want to defect. It was by this point Sasuke deemed he couldn't trust anyone anymore, even if they were his former teammates. This isn't "Lol, I'm edgy and evil!" and more "Everyone has betrayed me! And so, I will stand alone!" This part would drive him to go with the procedure to implant Itachi's eyes, and escape from Tobi when he deemed the time was right. Also, Sasuke left a pretty big impact overall. Danzo would be remembered for the snake he is....or rather...was, and his attack on the Five Kage pretty much shows that the Five Kage are not untouchable, that when facing an Uchiha's wrath, there is no place to run or hide. While he only killed Danzo, he just removed everyone's sense of safety, because in a single day, one man attacked the Leaders of the Five Great Ninja Villages, and survived. Susanoo's visage would be burned into the Five Kage's psyche. Not even Tobi's declaration of war could overshadow that.

Not only she went to lie and try to manipulate EVERY-ONE (Gary Oldman's voice) arround her, she also reached quite a level of stupidity far beyond the aceptable. Plus, demonstrated a annoying lack of resolve when she at last had her chance to kill Sasuke. Like, you know, even a person is unfit to kill another, there are alternatives besides freezing. She could try to deliver a non fatal punch or cut. She could have fought back when Sasuke grabbed her and went for her throat. Everything, absolutely everything about her in this arc works only in making her a worse character, consolidating her as perhaps the worse character in the series. It's also the arc that consolidated Sasuke as a completely looney irrational character, after making clear his goal to amaterasu every baby in Konoha for sins commited by less than 1% of the village population (all that while it's ok to let "Madara" live).

He planned to kill Tobi for his involvement in the massacre. That's why he asked Itachi who his accomplice was. After learning the truth he wanted to use him for Biju power. Then to locate Danzo & obtain EMS. After killing Danzo he told him they weren't allies. First thing he did after recovering from the transplantation was kill Zetsu. As for the villagers. Uchiha were ordered to be wiped out. No mercy. As revenge he would do the same to them. Too cruel, but rational.

@@Sasukeis6-0againstNaruto When did he give any indication he had plans to kill Tobi anytime in the future? I read the chapters again with Itachi and he just asked him about his part and his intentions in the massacre. Not one line indicating that he searching any info before considering kill Tobi/Madara. There is no reason to believe that the killing of the Zetsus has anything to do with plans to kill Tobi, or anything besides to test his powers or because they were in his way.
But if he indeed planned to kill Tobi, that would be indeed more coherent of him. But even still, if you see any rationality in thinking that some hundred or thousands innocent babies from konoha deserve to die because some dozen uchiha babies were killed by order of a few top administrators from the village decided to respond the coup that would put all the village at risk by killling including perhaps a bit more than a dozen uchiha babies, all that while 99,9% of the village didn't even know about this order, then we have completly different definitions of what rationality and emocionality is. Also, having only hatred for the babies his because of such an abominable and unforgivable sin that neither they nor their parents had any part, while having only love for Itachi, the main executioner, just because he did this for love for Sasuke is quite emocional, and not reasonable. Sasuke himself defends his position by saying something in the likes of "if anyone disagrees with me and think that I am acting emotinal, than I will kill everyone they ever cared about. So them they can understand a bit ofm y hatred". All that after saying that he values Itachi's life, the main executioner of the clan, more than the entire village. That's impossible to obtain a higher certificate of emotinality than that. There is no reason. Just the pure hatred of a brat who can't deal his emotions. Or can't deal with the "Uchiha Curse of Hatred" retcon that Tobirama explainded.

@@ericLpereira1989 Chapter 385 page 3. The village treated Naruto like trash just for having Kurama so how do you think they treated the clan suspected to having summoned it? Uchiha were already oppressed for generations before the Kyuubi attack. Kept from any governing position despite being a founding clan, then faced further discrimination after. The problem was systemic. For example, theres a reason the Sand and Sound wanted to destroy Konoha rather than just overthrow the leaders. The citizens shared the same beliefs. They'd just replace them with like-minded people and the same problems would occur. Innocent kids will be raised to be the same. I'd prefer he only wanted to kill the elders & change the ninja system, but becoming so angry made sense.
The "Curse of Hatred" isn't a retcon. Uchiha progress their greatest power from hatred. Consistently shown with Sasuke. It could be through positive emotion but given their line of work (especially in the warring states era) it was usually negative.

      @@Sasukeis6-0againstNaruto
Dude, you don't have to mention any of the 200 pages that showed the village treating Naruto as trash. I"ve read the manga. Also... chapter 385 page 3 is Itachi and Sasuke talking, with 0 mention to Naruto or 9tails, much less any village treatment. Anyway, Naruto's treatment was in part because the villagers saw the Kyuubi himself in Naruto. The bijuu they didn't have suspicion of being responsible for the huge suffering caused to most of the village, but absolute certainty of it. Also, Naruto made things worse in his michiefs and pranking just to get attention. It's a different reason than suspiciousness towards Uchiha, and there is no information towards how many of the village indeed believed in their involvement. But for all it is demonstrated, Sasuke is never showened receiving any kind of bad treatment from any of the villages in his time in Konoha. Quite the contrary, he seems to receive only admiration and friendlyness in the academy (and if you think that that doesn't count because most of the people he met there were kids and had no idea of any Kurama rampage nor suspicion on Uchihas....well, just try to compare how things were to Naruto again. The hatred and mistrust from the adults were transmited to their kids when it came to him. At the least this should indicate that the bad feelings towards Naruto were bigger than those towards Uchiha). There is no dialogue indicating any known adult characters prior to the Uchiha massacre, like Kakashi and the oher Jounins, nor Hiruzen, mistreated any Uchiha based on suspicions. All we get is some talk from Tobi that suspicion grew in the village. That's no reason to take for granted neither that there wasn't a substantial number of citizens that weren't suspicious, nor that those who indeed were treated Uchihas like trash. And when it comes to times prior to Kurama's rampage, the evidence grows even shorter. No scene demonstrating any mistreatment towards Obito being a Uchiha. Nor repports from either Itachi, Fugaku or non Uchiha characters. Off course, I'm talking bout the manga. Don't know about the anime nor light novels and don't care nor see relevancy in then when it comes to the manga.
The curse of hatred is new information presented without foreshadowing, changing previous views towards the story and it's characters (no one had oficial clues leading to believe that sharingan activation had, by itself, any effect in the minds of Sasuke's, Obito's or other Uchihas. Sasuke's behaviour after awakening them against Haku changed nothing. Nor when agaisnt Naruto. Nor Obito's. In fact, it would make more chance to say the contrary, not that I would believe it was. Sasuke sacrifices himself trying to save Naruto in the bridge. And when fighting Naruto he seems less psycopathic and with less killing intent than when he was just trying to kill him with a smile on his face, though it could be due to lesser influence from the curse mark as well, or due to simply considering Naruto as more of a friend). Therefore, I see it as something that fits the criteria for being considered "retcon". But whatever, it's just semantics.

@@ericLpereira1989 I cited chapter 385 page 3 in response to you claiming he never planned to kill Tobi. Things were different for Naruto but being shunned by the same village your clan founded, served & protected for generations is worse. Uchiha also realized their oppression was in place long before the Kyuubi attack. They were relegated to the Police Force to keep them isolated & away from governing positions. Face to face Sasuke was left alone but you said why yourself. He wasn't misbehaving like Naruto. If everyone was fine with Uchiha they wouldn't have been relocated to the outskirts for years. Do you think everyone was oblivious or Konoha is a dictatorship where citizens are scared to speak against government officials? It's far more likely that many agreed with them.
Sharingan doesn't change their minds. Their minds changing, typically from hatred, creates Sharingan. It's like a curse that their greatest power is gained from negativity.

18:27 - Well he was right. The Kage would hide Naruto and Bee but the war would force them to come to the battlefield.
19:04 - The alliance was getting destroyed by Zetsu's transformation trick. They survived due to Sakura figuring it out & Naruto telling them apart due to his newly obtained Kyuubi chakra mode. Tobi also had Rinnegan & Gedo Mazo under his control.

The one thing that would make this arc better would be if itachi also implanted Tsukuyomi in sasuke. Itachi knows Danzo would come after Sasuke eventually, so it makes sense for him to try and protect to Sasuke in the same way he did for Obito.
Imagine if during the fight sasuke managed to cut off the bandages around Danzo's head revealing Shisui's sharingan, and then itachi's mangekyo suddenly forms an Sasuke's right eye putting Danzo under tsukuyomi. Danzo and Itachi could have a conversation beyond the grave, and then once Itachi attacks, Danzo could use Izanagi to escape from Tsukuyomi!
Itachi isn't able to one shot Danzo like he probably planned to do, but maybe it would be enough for Sasuke to survive. In fact if you made this the way Sasuke escapes from Danzo's paralysis it would be a really nice omage to naruto being saved by Minato during the pain arc.

Fight between Sasuke and Sakura, even if entirely in genjutsu, to cap on the implied perfect chakra control she has that was a setup back from the first arc, with them having exchange in taijutsu as well, and Sakura actually going for an incapacitating hit before Naruto pops between the two, bocking both her hand imbued in Kabuto-esque medical attack, Sasuke's sword, and Kakashi, who would try to jump Sasuke from behind, all the while split in three clones, staring each of them in the eye. That would be hell of a reunion.

The other few times that it's used then it's pretty damn awesome, i can only remember Kakashi using that awesome genjutsu on Sakura in the bell test, the flute genjutsu that was used later by Kabuto, the frog song and that Kurenai jutsu that got flipped on her by Itachi.

pain arc conclusion shows naruto at his unflinching optimistic peak so far, while five kage arc shows the lowest depths of sasuke’s unflinching drive for vengeance. and both naruto and sasuke have to face an insane gauntlet of battles that test them to their limits at that point: naruto vs all six pain, sasuke vs five kage, samurai, danzo and team 7.

The action was top tier in this arc. My nit is that the cost of the Sasuke hype train was ultimately the esteem of the kage, especially Danzo and the Raikage. With the way Danzo was fighting, you'd be surprised to know he ever trained with geniuses like Saru or Tobirama. It was all hacks with Danzo, no strategy. Crazy that the leader of the root doesn't fight like the pensive, brooding villain he was propped up to be. The Raikage also showed himself to be temperamental and short-sighted. He would sacrifice himself at the start of a war, when his village is most vulnerable (they think they've lost both their jinjuriki), just to avenge his brother? Like yeah, maybe the ninja world gets a bit safer with Sasuke gone, but now your village is in complete disarray. I was surprised he still went on to be the leader of the joint forces after the fight.
All-in-all, it felt like a lot of potential was sacrificed to accelerate Sasuke's development as a threatening figure. I'd really prefer a prolonged tension between Danzo, the other Kage and the Jonin of the Leaf, and for Raikage's first showing to be a subversion his outward appearance. Making him as brutish as he appears was a safe, and dumb choice.

I think the reason why someone would dislike the 5 Kage Summit arc is because it starts with Danzo grabbing the Hokage position in a fashion that at first feels rather contrived. And from there Danzo as a character feels forced upon the story in an unnatural way. It’s difficult to swallow at first passing. But here’s the thing, his character is actually brilliant. Well written, well executed. He is a great character, not just a great villain. But he takes away the things we don’t want taken away from us. Tsunade’s title, Sasuke’s freedom, the ability for the other Kage to conduct a summit under good faith. These are things vital to our own understanding of a better Konoha. But he’s consistent and he’s an accurate portrayal of a tyrant poetical figure. So for those who have given the arc a second watch with an understanding of the character and his delusional thought that he is making the world a safer place, it lands so much better. It went from one of my most disliked arcs into one of my favorite. It’s amazing how perspective can do that.

I don't get why People hate on Naruto taking flak for still trying to save Sasuke in this arc. Before the Pain fight, it would have been totally justified to call him out for being way too concerned about someone obviously too far gone.
But now Naruto isn't just trying to naively get Sasuke back, he has gained the overarching goal of stopping the cycle of violence once and for all. It just so happens that this entire concept is right now completely focused and centered on Sasuke on a scale that is both more concentrated and at the same time at the largest scale to date. In essence, Sasuke now embodies the entire concept globally, not just to Naruto but to the entire world. That means to Naruto getting Sasukes ass saved is the most obvious and most important step to stop hate running rampant in the Ninja world. It might never be as concentrated as now ever again, so this might be his only chance to change the world.
That is also why I believe he has the panic attack. It's not just his duty to the Leaf, the world or to Sasuke, he's seeing the whole cycle of violence unfold right in front of him and realizes that at this moment even thoug he knows all the consequences it's going to have, he's completely unable to do anything about it.
I'm saying it here, if Sasuke died here at the five Kage arc, thematically there would have never been lasting peace in the Shinobi world. There may have still been a Shinobi Alliance, but it would have gone the Tsuchikages way off splitting up again into fighting each other after the threat has been resolved.

Like Iruka did for him, he wanted to save his fellow orphan, a person who risked his life to save his multiple times, from going down a dark path (Naruto hated the villagers and wanted revenge against them). He also felt he wasn't worthy of becoming Hokage, being in charge of protecting the entire village, if he couldn't save Sasuke.

While he was less far gone at the time, he was already pretending to be just as bad as he truly ended up being.
That being said, I'm not personally on the side of either argument, I'm just granting them legitimacy. To me, only if the Pain Arc hadn't happened but Sasuke still attacked the five Kage Summit, that is the only situation where I'd say Naruto would truly have been in the wrong to pursue Sasuke. because the Iruka and Hokage reasons alone aren't enough anymore to justify that.

It's pretty much explained before the summit when tobi reveal to taka that they fail to capture bee and it only happened because sasuke cuts one of the eight tail tentacule to save karin which is a scenario that terrefies sasuke where his bonds got in his way and made him weaker.
That's why in the summit when he's mad, blinded by rage and hatred he became stronger, abandonned juugo and suigestu because they're slowing him by their weakness and by piercing karin he obtained his goal which was killing danzo.
It was to show that when sasuke is surounding by bonds he's "weak" and not succeding like when he fougth gaara in the forest, itachi in the hotel, the nigth of the massacre and his fight bee with taka.
But when he decide to sever those bonds he's stronger and succeed like against naruto at the final valley and here with danzo.
It was his lowest point in the serie and it's one of sasuke's character theme to think "that loniless makes you strong" and one of his flaws.
It was a great character developpement for sasuke and in the war there's another change caused by his meeting with itachi and the hokages.
Of course it was sad to see him not caring for taka but it just made him more interesting at that moment and fortunaly in the war arc, sasuke asks them to forgive him and they became friends again.

So he questioned the Hokage to get a better understanding. What is a clan? What is a village? What is a shinobi? Why would Itachi sacrifice our clan to protect Konoha as it's loyal shinobi?
He learned how in an era of constant war his clan formed Konoha to create peace. He decided that rather than destroy the village for mistreating them, he would ensure what they strove for wouldn't go to waste. What changed after that was the method he used. Initially he wanted to handle things alone through his revolution plan. Til Naruto convinced him to work with allies.

It's arguably better than the Pain arc. Both are similar in that they involve Biju hunts for Eight Tails, focus on the cycle of hatred & have a climatic battle with a respective main character.
Pain Invasion has an advantage of involving more legacy characters in a classic location. While the Kage Summit has an advantage of focusing on important new characters in a new setting. Sasuke's grudge against Danzo was greater than Naruto's with Pain making the battle more personal. Plus the choregraphy & character development was better with Sasuke's fight, but Pain had a better flashback than Danzo & the destruction of Konoha coupled with the "deaths" made things feel more tense. Mangekyo was executed better than Sage Mode (in lore, build up, how it was obtained, used & affected the user), but Naruto may feel more hype because he actually became competent. Doing what Sasuke does on a regular basis - pull off smart tactics.
Overall the series ends with a better shine on Sasuke's development than Naruto's from those battles. Sasuke kills Danzo, takes his role of protecting from the shadows & does it better. Whereas Naruto tells Pain he has no answer on how he will obtain peace (despite inheriting the goal from Jiraiya years earlier). Then gets lucky the villages united for the war allowing him to ride the coat tails of temporary peace. And unfortunately like with Pain, he has no answer to Sasuke on what he would do if the villages went back to fighting after the war. He just insisted on working with everyone.
Whereas Sasuke's plan for peace was better than Pain's & involved him making a self-sacrifice for peace which he scolded Danzo about when Danzo took Karin hostage to preserve his life (chapter 480 page 13). He threw Danzo's words back at him, took his role & did it better. While Pain threw Naruto's retorts back at him ("What about my family? My friends? My village?") which made Naruto shut the f*ck up (as did Sasuke's response on why the villages united, their potential separation & how he his abilities allowed him to always be around to watch over the world. Funny how Naruto questioned how Sasuke's plan would fare after his death but didn't apply that logic to himself). Granted he did good in overcoming hatred by choosing not to kill Pain. Breaking the cycle of hatred & revenge that Pain was convinced everyone was in.

I understand why most people dont really like five kage arc, but keep in mind that this arc is the first time we were introduced to the other 5 nation other than hidden sand. (atleast in the manga, i dont really know if some filler actually took place on those nations)
This arc shows that jinchuuriki/akatsuki conflict isnt all about konoha, and actually im looking forward to met a brand new character that can expand the story a lot more from those nations, much less than simply about naruto vs sasuke things...
Only for kishimoto to ditch most of them on the very next arc, and buff the hell out of naruto and sasuke just for them to get even more spotlight.

15:50 Enton would have impaled him like Naruto's clones at the Valley and or sliced him up like Kaguya's ice. Chidori penetrated his armor. Sasuke knew how sturdy it was & specifically used Enton spikes to overcome it. Otherwise he'd power Susano as he did seconds later *when needed.* TANKING the Sand siblings & Darui's combined attacks. Last resort - Tobi and Zetsu would step in as they did later. They were watching the entire time.

Five Kage Summit arc was great and had a lot of tension. Definitely got me excited for the future. Naruto's drake moments where he was touching himself thinking about Sasuke leading up to it though were weird.

Wow the perception of the 5 kage summit arc was definetly influenced by how great the pain arc was, just speaks to kishimoto's genius

Lmao you're basically forgetting the fact that plot armor was spread everywhere throughout the whole taka team, especially Sasuke who would've died a million times already. Sasuke was also progressively getting too edgy which a lot of people hated the arc, Yeah he was experiencing intense trauma from his past but at the same time just casually betraying everyone left and right.
We didn't even get Sasuke vs Kakashi which is true that it's a missed potential and Danzo vs Sasuke was basically just another wasted potential as well with Danzo just casually wasting Izanagi, Obito vs Torune and Foo were much more interesting to see.
Sakura was just doing what sakura does all the time aka being useless, She was just spreading uselessness all around this arc like covid and there was no improvement or resolve that she passed through the War Arc, Everything was on the hands of Tsunade's training and power of friendship bs that made her (Slightly) be more useful
