  • In this video I test out some Tru flare products, bear bangers, whistle flares, and shotgun flares. Bear bangers are a good option for someone without a firearms license.
    Get yours here
    astore.amazon.c...
    The shotgun flares will directly show your location but will not be as loud as a normal shotgun round. IMO they are not really worth it unless you're on a boat.
    The whistle flares may be good for intra-group communication i.e. signaling other members of your party, as its a sound that is distinct from a gunshot (unlike bear bangers which sound like gunshots). For signalling though they are not that good.
    Bear bangers are the most well rounded Tru flare product that are a worthwhile investment, especially in areas where firearms are prohibited.

    I remembered watching this video when I was young and full of fun and parties. I was not a prepper but loved outdoors and tried out what works so I kind of racked up some gears over the years. Things had changed a lot in the last few years and I’m glad you kept us all informed. keep up with what you’re doing Nate.

    You can take the red flares apart, take apart an elcheapo home cast slug shell, and make a 12 gauge tracer with them....

      It's simple as shit to do, hot glue the flare into the back of the slug, take the wadding/power piston out of the shell completely, wrap either paper or cotton around the flare evenly until it forms a tight fit in the shell and shove the whole thing down tight into the powder, when you fire the shell the powder sets off the flare which is attached to the slug, they go 150 or so yards for burn time. DO NOT! I repeat DO NOT try and do this with Bear bangers!!!!! For whatever reason the concussion of firing or something sets the banger itself off and it explodes inside the barrel....I've tried this twice with the same effect each time, it didn't burst my barrel but I did buy a new barrel and discard the old one just in case.

    When trying to signal air or ground rescue, those shotgun flares would better utilized by firing straight up rather than outward. The flares in this video look pretty good.

    Never fire bear bangers toward the bear. As shown here, they fly unpredictably and bounce randomly. Too likely to scare the bear toward you. Always fire upward

      ***** I agree, unless you can find a deal on them I don't think it makes much sense. They may have some use say if a helicoptor was searching for you at dusk it likely wouldn't hear a shotgun blast, but might see the flare, same goes for water, but in most situations as preppers we are prepared to get out of those situations on our own anyways so yeah I agree 100%

    Seems to me that the bear bangers and /or the whistle flares have potential for a trip wire alarm system. I believe trip flares were used in the Vietnam War quite a bit. I'll have to pick some up and experiment. It also seems that they might be a bit more resistant to the elements than the electronic alarms you used in your trip wire video (which I also thought were a great idea). What do you think?

    • @CanadianPrepper
      @CanadianPrepper  10 лет назад

      Sashok1979 The thought has crossed my mind, it would take some precise tinkering to set it up and a strong enough line to attach to the firing pin. May have to reference how they did it in nam... Let me know how it works out I'm very curious.

  • @JFrazer4303
    @JFrazer4303 6 лет назад

    Flares out of a shotgun will probably go higher than a flare gun. 60 meters up and they can be seen from a long distance, unlike the smoke from a shotgun round.

  • @cptnscarlet
    @cptnscarlet 10 лет назад +7

    Those bear bangers seem like they are more likely to scare the bear towards you than away from you - I'll stick to carrying a shotgun in the woods.

    • @CanadianPrepper
      @CanadianPrepper  10 лет назад +2

      ***** I've read that bear spray is the most effective deterrent (more so than guns). If a bear is charging at you, shooting it and not landing a kill shot, which is very likely in the heat of the moment will likely intensify the situation. It might be better to first try shooting in the air, which is similiar to a banger only the banger is more portable... In most instances bears will run away from loud noises unless they are nuisance bears who are used to human sounds, these nuissnce bears are not common in the deep bush and rather hand up in dumps and stuff. If you are able to carry a loaded shotgun at all times and still carry your gear with convenience and safety then by all means do that.

    • @cptnscarlet
      @cptnscarlet 10 лет назад +4

      I am not a fan of the bear spray either as it is affected by wind and has a limited range (some times 5 feet) and there are instances where it has had no effect at all. The government tells you to carry it since dead people don't complain.

    just wanted to challange your use with the shotgun flair. they are a visual signaling device and you conclude they are no better than a standard shot gun round. they are intended to be shot directly into the air, not into the bush. otherwise how can searchers be expected to see them? id research that one again. ive used them in the past and they have worked absolutly fantastic.

    It should be noted that you want to shoot the bear banger straight up above you, so the noise is generated in your immediate area. Shooting the banger at the bear could end up having the explosion go off behind the bear, and effectively scaring the bear toward you…not cool.

    • @CanadianPrepper
      @CanadianPrepper  9 лет назад

      Ratchety Indeed!

    • @Roarmeister2
      @Roarmeister2 6 лет назад

      You may be able to bounce the banger off the ground and right towards the bear too where the sound pressure would be the greatest. But I agree, shooting behind the bear could make him "retreat" right into your direction.
      Secondly, you aren't likely to have snow and active bears in the same season so there should be minimal fear of shooting down towards the ground and getting it muffled. ⛄🐻

    Cool video. Just a thought. Unless you recruit your own company before SHTF which is not likely most preppers will be in small groups. That will mean you probably will not have enough people to mount consistent long and medium range patrols. That will almost certainly mean your warning time with predators animal or human could be greatly reduced. Some of those pen launchers and either a bear banger or whistle flare could be rigged to tripwires as an early warning system that should wake everyone right quick as well as scare the hell out of an advancing threat.

    You screwed the shell onto the pen launcher with the firing pin in battery and in the firing position.
    The mechanism you indicated as a safety is NOT a safety, but a place to lock the firing pin back and away form the primer of the shell so it doesn't fire when you screw it on, and then keeping it away from primer until ready to fire, which is much safer than "holding it back" as you demonstrated. (As you can lock it in that position, then block with finger)

      You took the words right out of my mouth. Its stage 1 for loading the cartridge; there is not enough pressure to activate the cartridge shell from that point and it is considered a safe position (but it is not a firearm safety) when strapped to your pack strap for example. Usually, there is also a hold position for stage 2 at the bottom where the spring is compressed to its max and is when you are primed and ready to launch the cartridge. At that point, the bear is in site and all you need is to flick your thumb to activate it.

    Those Bear-Bangers looked like Pocket Party Poppers.
    I guess if you shot one down the throat of a hungry bear, it 'might' give him enough gas & indigestion to think twice about eating you. I can see tossing a couple of those pen-launchers and a box of Bear-Bangers in a bag, they are about the size/weight of a couple of chem-lites. But I still would definitely want my 26.5mm Flare Gun, with it's assortment of 'options'.
