Live Shotgun Shell in PLASTIC flare pistol - What happens?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 22 фев 2018
- Many people asked us what would happen if a live shotgun shell was shot from a flare pistol. We would much rather show you what happens than have anyone get injured or worse trying it themselves. I believe that it should impossible to chamber ANY 12 ga shell into these pistols. Perhaps the flare shells should be triangle shaped instead of cylindrical just to make it impossible for someone to chamber a 12ga shell into the plastic flare pistol.
This was done under very controlled conditions and we suggest you do not attempt this yourself.

Have you ever shot a flare out of your shotgun?
Well the main of the flair pistol is fine so if you just put a steel barrel on it you got 5 inch barrel shotgun me an my buddy did it and it works for like 8 shots before the grip loses integrity
I can definitely see this being useful for hunters to keep a few 12 gauge flares on hand in case of an emergency
Hopefully without starting a hug fire which is why they are for marine use.
If I can't kill it I'll burn it
There's a good chance that starting a smoky fire (i.e. use leaves or wet wood) is also going to draw attention... Flares might be good if someone is already looking for you, but just shooting one off in the hope that someone will notice and come to investigate is probably wishful thinking...

Years ago I bought one of these flare guns and removed the barrel. I had a friend of mine who was into melting and casting metal create an exact copy of the barrel, except out of iron. We fired about 25 rounds through it before the plastic handle of the gun started to melt.
Iron wouldn't do it. Too brittle.
@@oneproudbrowncoat What do you mean iron is too brittle? What do you think cannons are made out of?
@@mysterydude1 Admittedly it would depend upon the iron, but cast iron would certainly be too brittle. Cannon used black powder, which has a pressure curve different from that of smokeless.
@@oneproudbrowncoat yeah well, it worked. 🤷♂️
@@mysterydude1 You're positive it wasn't steel?

Jerry G eh you can get covered in cocaine using just an 8ball, if you accidentally blow instead of short then there ya go.. covered in cocaine
So in theory you could use a 12 gauge chamber adapter to fire 9mm, 10mm, 44mag, 357/38 etc out of this flare gun because the adapters act as the barrel & breach while containing the pressures inside of it. They're short enough to fit in this flare gun and you can always bore the plastic barrel out so it will fit if need be. Since you don't need paperwork for chamber adapters or for a flare gun, you could have an unregistered single shot firearm and no one would ever know, to them it's just a flare gun.
Interesting.
Actually you can. I've made a couple already. Your best bet is to use a 12ga to .22 adapter. I've tried a 9mm adapter thats rifled and the flare gun broke. Yet it can shoot a smooth bore .38 adapter just fine. I also suggest you sand out the inside of the flare gun so the adapter fits. Have fun with this toy 😁
If you're going to do that, use a surplus flare gun made of metal. Don't be a nimrod and use a damn plastic flare gun.
Also, it legally becomes a firearm and comes under all applicable laws when you put the adapter in.
I would like to see this plastic flare gun with metal insert, maybe in .410.
@@xzqzq 410 is a pretty high pressure shell compared to 20 and 12g pretty sure that would end badly.
I have noticed how thick the chamber end of .410 barrel is compared to rest of barrel. Were I to do this: minimum hand loads, fired remotely. Have had fun experimently with .410, find it odd people consider it a wimpy round. I find it an excellent balance between firepower , weight, and maneuverability. Shoot a home intruder with 4 hard-cast .35 lead balls, gonna ruin his whole day. Also, surprised at the accuracy I could obtain with .45 lc sabots & .38 bullets, outta smoothbore tube.
My new real life side-quest: create a shotgun pistol by making one of these out of steel
They already make those
Duct Tape the barrel
Use flex tape
u could prob get away with just making the barrel out of steel since thats the failure point

Perhaps the first flares were military and would be designed to fire from a shotgun for signaling
Pretty close to right.
WWII 12 gauge signal flares were longer than a shotgun shell and full normal diameter the whole length of the shell. Higher power and more height from the flare.
Some military 12 gauge flares even had the parachute which would be pointless on the ones made for that plastic flare pistol because the chute would open about the time the flare hit the ground.
Almost all of the original WWII flares are now UNSAFE TO FIRE FROM ANYTHING. Age has caused them to swell and usually you can't chamber them. Might be some Vietnam era still safe, but they are old enough that I would not try it.
Robert Szasz the millitary mostly use illiumination mortar rounds
The military uses something completely different for signaling. I won’t go into what that is, but this isn’t even close.
Jerry G It is dead on they do usually use illium mortars but have electronic infrared signalling devices for downed airmen.
+F Huber back in Nam they also has 40 mm flares. I've got one.

TAOFLEDERMAUS Brass mini-shells? AGUILA MAKE THAT SHIZZ!
Im not sure this hasn't already been noted on here. They do make steel inserts designed to fire smaller caliber rounds from flare guns. Is it then considered a fire arm?
Don't do it. The flare pistol lacks strength in the action to keep the base of the shell from pushing the breech face back. A sub gauge adapter will cause the pistol to break even worse, as in all frags going back to the shooter.
That flare into the clay .. I wasn’t ready for that one

Be interesting to see this done with one of the older fully metal ones.

Super cool thanks for sharing so I didn’t have to try myself 🤣👍🏼😁
The original flares used the mini-shells now popular with shotguns in general, and I have a number of those flare shells still unfired. But it was a very low pressure shell, barely more than a primer load.
Nice! Not sure if you’ve seen one, but there was a cool military 10 gauge flare pistol from the 1940’s called a Mark 5 Signal Pistol. They had aluminum barrels and my grandfather told me that they would self-destruct when loaded with a standard 10 gauge round. Thanks for helping me envision what it looked like! Great content!

Wonder what would happen if you were to put a steel sleeve insert that chambered a smaller gauge like 20ga or 16ga?
That was very cool. I was recently pulling for a shooter on High 8 in Skeet, it was super windy and hard to hear, so, I was standing right behind him and about 1 foot away form his back when he yelled pull. At that point the top half of the chamber blew off due to a bad reload. Thank goodness no was hurt. But, at least I get to see what it would have looked like in slow motion. Thanks for the vid(s)

@@taofledermaus it was designed to fail if anyone tried a live round in it. That's why anyone can pick one up at Wally world, no questions asked.
They work surprisingly well when the lip of the inside of the barrel is filed down just enough for a 12 gauge to (insert any handgun caliber round here) adapter to fit inside. Not that i know from experience or anything... 😉
I have seen where people have done that and fired a hot 12 gauge load out of them, and the results were far more dramatic.
J P they dont hold up very well, 10+ rounds and the backplate and lockup gets questionable, even with a 22 the back pressure is too much, most cases end up splitting or mangled too
Ive personally shot a box of .22lr out of an orion flare gun with a 12g to .22 adapter without it cracking. When i loaded .357 in it, it cracked after around 15-20 rounds.
You should compare the signaling ability in the dark eith the flare gun vs the rifle.

I want to know what is the biggest caliber you can fire out of that when using the adapters ??
I see the algorithm brought us together yet again
with the top of the barrel blown off would it still fire a flare ????????? don't put away the 3 miles of string just yet.
possibly
Bullet velocity is reduced by as much as 35% by each ricochet deflection, and velocity is further reduced by air resistance as cohesive bullet fragments often produce an audible whine tumbling after losing stability
will you try to insert a 20 gauge metal sleeve inside the 12 gauge chamber long enough to cover the brass part too ??
I always wondered about this...
Also, what if you repacked a flare shell with the guts of a standard 12 gauge shell???
Would the longer flare shell stop the structural failure of the flare gun barrel??
Nope, as the issue is right at the base of the shell, not caused by the barrel of the gun blowing out.
In fact, it would be worse as the flare shell doesn't appear to have a brass ring for extraction that adds strength.

Assuming you have access to metal machining equipment. Unless you're way more creative than me? I mean a piece of 3/4" pipe would make a decent enough barrel, but effectively getting it attached to the rest of the gun would be a challenge.
Adding a loop to a piece of pipe to attach it to the frame would be relatively easy. Just need either a welder or a triangular file depending on which method you choose. But make sure it's long enough to be legal, and be aware that there's a definite possibility of the plastic not taking the kickback from the shell. High brass shells might help with that, but I wouldn't count on it...
Hello from Sweden 🇸🇪
Would love ti see you guys try some chamber inserts/liners. Maybe .410 or the 9mm ones. That should prevent the barrel from failing. I wonder if the action/frame/lock up would survive
Funny I've been thinking the same daggone thing ..I'm betting it would work because the pressure would be in the adapter.. figured it'd probably handle 22lr easily if it'd strike it right
I thought of doing this years ago...glad I forgot to do it. thanks

replace plastic barrel with an 18.5" steel pipe. Works great
you should've put a flare in after to see what would happen
