    I had a house fire, and had several thousand rounds of various caliber explode in the fire. I told the firemen before they went in the house, but they weren't concerned at all. Unconstrained shells exploding like this just dont concentrate the energy in one direction just as this video shows, and against their fire protection, there was no increased danger from the shells. I had never thought about it before - Good to see this video to see it firsthand and slowed down!

      this is not the real truth. if the impact mechanism had not been fixed and the bullet jammed, the shell would have flown away from the shot because of the physical reaction and because it is lighter. (used google translator)

      Interesting video. Maybe similar setup with high power rounds as the crimped bullet in the harder casing may produce different results. A gunshop had a fire sparked by someone grinding and I happened to drive past at the moment. Sounded like a massive gunfight. Five people died in the process. Can you imagine ammo going off in every direction. Allan

    Interesting I’ve never seen a video of this done before. However for the case of a misfire randomly going off on the ground it would do even less damage, the shell in this test is being held firm, if there’s nothing holding it then the casing would go flying back, this dissipating the energy even more. Better to be safe though, if you get a misfire dispose of it safely

    It is not just the length of the shotgun barrel that causes higher velocity for the shot column. The restriction caused by both the shotshell crimp and the shot wad obturating the barrel creates the pressure required to complete the burn sequence, allowing the powder to create pressures many magnitudes greater than that displayed in the video.

  • @Goodwin2110
    @Goodwin2110 7 лет назад +5

    Primers can create 40-60 Bar pressure inside the loaded shell. Smokeless powder requires substantially high pressure level to burn fast, but if there's nothing to keep the pressure (just soft thin plastic shell walls) then it wouldn't burn... That explains bunch of unburnt powder you see after the cartridge blows up.

    If you mount that in reverse (shell faces the tripline) about 6-8 inches off the ground it makes a great early warning system and cripples the intruder. But you have to use 00-Buck or Flachete Rounds. Nothing fancy, cheap and works well. And if you can retrieve the mechanism you can use it again.
    Keep in mind I am speaking about SHTF scenarios here. This is not for regular home defense when you are leaving to go get dominos or some s**t.

    My dad belonged to a Sportsman's club and would shoot skeet every week. I remember a guy that bet he could fire a shotgun shell into a hat and not destroy the hat. I remember that he had a shotgun and was able to remove the barrel with the shell and trigger workings intact. He pointed it down into someone's hat and pulled the trigger. The shell blew up (not violently) and the lead shot fell into the hat.

We would tape on a 12 ga. shell to the end of the barrel, with one hand hold the rifle above our head and fire it. Not much happened, like here the shell just blew out the side.

    I've done this experiment as a kid about 50 years ago. I was about 8. I learned then that powder needs some compression to burn. Don't get that when a shell is not in a chamber. Surprising how loud a primer and a wad are alone. Fun for training dogs.

    • @allensanders4204
      @allensanders4204 Год назад

      I did it as kid with a old cardboard 12 gauge shell that had a bulge , cut the crimp , poured out the shot , stuck it in a vise on the work bench and hit the primer with a nail and hammer. The roar was deafening in a 2 car attached garage. Pissed my mom off beyond bad, which in turn led to my dad becoming agitated which happens when wives get mad. Which led to a ass whipping for me, fun experiment for a 8 yr old but with negative reinforcement. BTW I did get some powder burns on my knees and shins because I had the shell in the vise primer up , wad facing down . It was a old magnum duck load of 4s before I took the shot out. Fun Stuff back in the fun days of the early 60s before Karen's and everybody were tight assed

    In California, a booby trap designed to do harm can definitely get you arrested, and open you up for a lawsuit by whomever gets injured by it, burglar or not. You can however have "trip" systems designed to sound alarm, noise makers and such. A primer strike only would probably be okay, but if someone gets injured, you'd better have a good lawyer and bail bondsman just in case.

    Cool video. But if this was to really duplicate a misfire or hang fire of an ejected shell, shouldn't the shell NOT be constrained? Constraining the shell as shown in the video forces the shot and wad forward and only allowed to go side/side or up. Id like to see what really happens to an unconstrained shell (mimicking an ejected shell).

Does the maker advertise it as a device for inflicting death or injury on an intruder? That would certainly leave them open to a fat lawsuit. Maybe it's just supposed to make a loud noise.

    Not even close to lethal, doesn't even break lenses of glasses. Few scrapes and maybe burn. Not too effective, especially if it hit an arm or butt or leg. The only value I see in this is causing momentary disorientation
