How I win my battle with anxiety + panic + agoraphobia with exposure therapy, letting crutches go

  • Please enjoy these ramblings of a mad man as he attempts a ten-minute drive!
    These drives are easy when I have the crutches in place so now it's time to remove the training wheels and give it a go solo with no support mechanisms.
    Hope this helps anyone else going through the same thing.

    its crazy how many common crutches and symptoms people struggling with anxiety and agoraphobia share. i always have to have my water with me too, also my phone.

      Agreed! The water used to be a big one for me and my phone is still a huge crutch for me. I'm taking them away one at a time, but it sure is tricky.

    Man I wish I had your courage. I can’t even go down the street without panicking. One day I’m just gonna say F it and go for it. God bless brother.

    [ know how hard that was and I am proud of you for being so brave. It is a process that takes time and patience with one's self . . . a lonely but ultimately triumphant journey. Keep it up, my friend!

    I’ve commented a few times, I’m using my boyfriends RUclips, I really struggle with going out without my partner, so currently working on that, I can’t even walk past the shop without him, have you ever been in a similar situation? It’s taken all my independence away being like this and well done for your exposure!

    • @georgeaskew1
      @georgeaskew1  5 лет назад +1

      Absolutely, I've been in that situation for a long time before! The only thing that helped me was making a list of things I had to do by myself to hold myself accountable. Then I would at least give the list a go and I soon got addicted to ticking things off that list, things on the list might include something like walking 30 seconds out of the house alone. After a while of ticking these accomplishments off and feeling confidence grow, I started making bigger goals and bigger and bigger until now I'm out driving without anyone! I can't go mega far right now but in the last year I've accomplished so much. But that starting point and holding yourself accountable is the hardest bit. Trust me, I was very low and if I can do it I know you can! Good luck

    Thanks for sharing! This is very encouraging. I currently am dealing with agoraphobia. I have my ups and downs. I just need to keep up with the exposure therapy. Good thing you never used the inhaler because it raises your heart rate which is the last thing one needs during an anxiety attack.

    So im going through this and you explain it best using crutches. I always make sure my wife has her phone on her and knows where im going. My question is what are you specifically afraid of, mine is always what if i lose my mind or lose my mimd due to a panic attack as well as getting pulled over by police just because i wouldnt have a escape then and i always have to be ready and able to escape any situation

    • @georgeaskew1
      @georgeaskew1  3 года назад

      I think having spoken to a lot of people, this is a very common theme. The worry of losing your mind or not being able to escape is somehow linked. But the more I speak to people the more I realize that nobody has ever lost their mind from that fearful feeling of adrenaline, it's just not possible as far as I can work out. It FEELS like it, but it will never actually happen. The first time you had a panic attack, did you feel like you'd lost your mind? Probably, but that's just because it was a totally new feeling. But in actual fact, you hadn't. But then with avoidance behaviors, you have told yourself, "let's not let that happen again in case I lose my mind". The thing is even when you had no idea what was going on, you didn't know it was anxiety or adrenaline or any of that stuff, you didn't lose your mind. Now it's just about pushing the boundaries that only exist in your own head to make you realize, there is nothing to fear but fear itself, and that fear is totally in your control, once you realize it's not going to do you any harm.

      @@georgeaskew1 thanks again I'm currently going through this. It's been four months and now I'm starting to drive locally but I do have support. Still have depression as I'm always thinking how long is this going to take as I feel my life has been robbed from me. How are you doing thank you for your videos

      When did you notice the depression leave

    • @georgeaskew1
      @georgeaskew1  4 года назад +1

      Bruce Vecranges totally understand that feeling, but it got better for me the moment I realised my life is different to most people’s and to what it used to be for me. But that’s okay, life can be enjoyed in many ways even when depressed of anxious. That’s not to say I was happy about it haha. It took a while for it to all settle down and for me to get that perspective but believe me it does get better. It just feels like it never will for now, but that’s not true, it does get better

      Hey Kyle I sure am. I had a panic attack just yesterday. The difference is that it doesn’t have as much of an impact on me now as I have a better perspective and more clarity on my condition. It is getting better every month.
