Jacob, you're going down in history, buddy. This is exceptional. You're growing as an artist - that's maybe the most exciting thing about this piece. Oh, AND the groove and that funky ass bassline. And your thoughtful arrangements and vocal harmonies. I'm so excited for you, man. There's no stopping you.
Jack ,dude, stop writing comments and go make a new video lol
Thanks, Jack, for pointing this out from Patreon.
The fact that Jack Conte is commenting on a video by Jacob Collier is just so exciting. Too much talent on one RUclips page. You both inspire me so much.
You're sincerely the two most innovative musicians on RUclips, I support you both on Patreon. Please make videos together. plz Jackob plz
Omg, I was just reading this comment and thought "how nice" - then I saw it's from one of my favourite artists and musical idols.
The man is a mad scientist.
yes!!!
has the tired eyes and everything lol
I was just about to say that
I’d love to see him collab with Thomas Dolby who was the same type of genius in the late 70s through the 80s. I swear Jacob is his illegitimate child.
@@TriphoonG45 I know!!! 😂😂😂
This is magnificent. There's so much feeling in your music and playing (not to mention your most impressive musical knowledge). I'll gladly support you through patreon, you deserve so much!
Your an amazing musician too. One of my favourites. It would be so amazing if you would do a collab with jacob!!
Anomalie wow A fan👏
COLLAB
@Anomalie dude! You are awesome too :D Hope to catch up to your funk level in this lifetime
Oi CoLLab now!!
When I see that music room, all those instruments and stuff... it reminds me that it took me nine years to convince my parents to get my first instrument (which I paid for - I was already 18 by then).
I'll never make that mistake with my kids.
Kudos to this guy's parents.
His mom is a professional violinist and can be frequently heard in his video :)
LOL never make a mistake having kids in the first place-very hard to keep your creativity then.
Yes! I got my first guitar in my second year in high school. Asked my dad to put me into a guitar course at one of the famous institutions, but I didn't get what I want even though they and the people that know our family know I have musical talent.
I'll never do what my dad did to my kid and just use my kid's talent to show off to my acquaintances and relatives in the future.
piano It’s also important to keep in mind that the room started small!! He was making music that we could only dream of with just a Casio keyboard with a couple hundred sounds
Starting small and letting your child explore as they need might be a little more cost effective too 😅
But definitely not waiting until 18 for their first instrument
People you have to understand this is Detroit style funk!! No need to quantize the beat let it drag!!! FUNKY!!! D'angelo and Dilla all in one!!
Ahem, the beat is quantized... To 7/16... (if you listen to the "strong" and the "weak" beat you will notice that the first one is 4/16, while the second is 3/16, giving that "drunk" feeling)
Things like this get done quite often to make the beat sound "off tempo", while it is actually extremely calculated xD
Hope I've been useful
@@miki890098 🙄
@@miki890098 ha!
@@miki890098 Yeah, music is all about extreme calculation.🤘
miki890098 believe it or not the whole point of a Dilla feel is that is can’t be quantised. It can’t be written down on paper either because it was originally created by accident. Dilla didn’t have modern a hip hop drum machine that quantised his hi hat to a certain polyrhythm.. it just didn’t quantise it at all leaving this slightly off beat tempo that can just be played with feel, practice and intuition
Bro...Jacob...Do you understand the gravity of what you just did in this song?? You created an 8 part harmony and did the vocals COMPLETELY BY YOURSELF, and had the same sound that the group Take 6 has while they use 6 SEPARATE vocalists! Not only that but you also play every instrument by yourself! I'm mind blown right now man. seriously. this is incredible. this song had a D'Angelo type of feel to it with like, Take 6 vocals...yet it was all your own...beautiful. simply beautiful.
He's a genius! Literally.
He's a fan of D'Angelo and Take 6, you nailed it.
How is that possible that this guys, that young, knows so much, is so musically mature, and can come up with something like this.
I mean, even the big names in the jazz industry could not come up with this. I am baffled.
Because when the big names in the jazz industry were about, music like this didn't exist
I am watching this video over and over and just appreciate how this beats flows. the triplets, are tortured and the results is amazing, all the syncope at the bass are just spot on. and the harmony...
Reincarnation?
TheRomichou 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I guess he is just a one in a million (billion, kvadrillion, whatever ..) who's nature is music , who does not have to study as a child (they way we do), it just flows through him. Genius!
D'Angelo rules here, isn't it, Jacob? You are the best thing that happened in the business for the last 20 years, kid. Please, keep moving forward. Cheers, from Brazil.
So many comments from people who def haven't heard any neo-soul or J Dilla...check that stuff out, then come back and listen! He is not off-beat or anything like that...it's a particular style called slugging, or "drunk". It's purposeful, and essential to the groove. Amazing stuff as always Jacob - you've switched it up again! The bass at the end had me literally ON THE FLOOR. I mean...WHAT?!?! I honestly think you're probably the most talented all-rounded musician under 25 on the planet. I mean, how can you do this to "Why do birds suddenly appear?"!!!!
its immense. Hope he puts it on itunes like fascinating rhythm x
word
Now I see what he's doing with the time....it's a modern interpretation. Read what I wrote at the top about Miles Davis and the funk band he had in the early 70's.
Akil Henry definitely not off beat lol.
Akil Henry whoever said that shit cracks me up tho
Man this dude is sooooo cold. So much D'Angelo influence on this arrangement. Vocally & instrumentation. This is amazing. And he's playing all the instruments? Fire
Xavier Leeds They should do a record together. Endless Fire
Jaime Alvarado L. Yes yes yessir
This arrangement reminds me of d'angelo voodoo album
SIMPLY BREATHTAKING!! EVERY SINGLE ELEMENT OF THIS IS FLAWLESS. I will admit, I screamed out loud several times!!!!!!
Awesome!
me too!
I thought that I was the only one that screamed out lol
Jason Coombs Not at all man!!!
Tony Jones HE DRIVES ME NUTS
Looking at Jacob's musical journey from his early days to Djesse vol 3, he was already such an extraordinarily gifted and hard working guy, but you can still see the massive growth he has had. Glad to be on this crazy, musically colourful ride!
The best comment I read for a long time......and so true!
What gets me about this masterpiece is how effortlessly he grooves and just adds fills or licks just to spice it up, especially on the bass. I’m a bassist myself, and I hope one day to get near his level of ease in his playing. Not to mention he’s SELF TAUGHT?!? How?!? 🤯
This is musical talent beyond beyond words. A Burt Bacharach classic marinated with a deliciously funky neo-soul vibe topped with ethereal vocals, all this from a young lad from the UK... this is madness I tell you! Wow.
Oh my gosh...that bassline starting from 4:45....I'm literally running out of words
+Umidori san 6个月后回来有了新发现 - -
+Umidori san Running out of words. Same.
+Umidori san and that tone. Damn hot
Same here. It's a dream.
How did he get that chorusy driven effect on it though?!
the tiny, kinda staggered syncopations in this are so satisfying
and this man's bass playing is flawless every single time
he straight up turned the carpenters into a d'angelo groove
Jacob it's so good to know that you are soulful as well as technical. You truly are a well rounded musician. Being a African America you reached me with this arrangement!!! It's feel soooo good. Thank God for you!!!
The bass is just DOPE
His music is so creative, classical and modern at the same time. He is definitely a genius. His music made me cry twice, and I just discovered him recently. I just want to cry more. Huge thanks
I can't believe this track is 5.5 years old, already. I'm in love with all the new stuff but it hasn't curbed my love for this older stuff at all. This still sounds absolutely brilliant to me.
this guy stole the idea from the acapella soundtrack movie "mirror mask" which i known long time ago.i have very wide range knowledge.
That bass outro is otherworldly 😮
This.
It was rather nasty... and I mean that in the best way possible.
I am 56 years old and I heared the original Carpenter song in my childhood. And to me Jacob version is just incredible. He took all the essence and add 100000% better best more. Go ahead boy! So hard to reinvented a well Known song
Incredible. Thanks for being you! ❤
Absolutely brilliant, the sound you got. The late rhythms, the flamming beats, the on-point bassage.
Been a bassist since 1988, I bow to your inspiration. Thanks, good man 👍
Truly stunning. Even years later, it’s still ahead of its time.
Despite being very much behind the time
@@louis2271 I see what you did there.
2.5 years later and this song is still addicting
toasty 5 years later and still

It will be forever
6.5 years later and this song is still addicting
I have yet to find ANY musician or group that clearly puts as much thought and intention into EVERY SINGLE SECOND of a song. Period.
This may be the sickest thing I've ever heard.
Germono Toussaint WHY???
Is sick the new word for cool? Because my Why was for Germono To us saint!!
oh my!!!!! I am 91
Cheeky!!!!!
Germono Toussaint This is some more of the shit Jacob.
What a timing - mindblowing. Jacob definitely unlocked a completely new level. Combined with a great soul with a great heart and such good vibes for the world, he is a bliss. Thank you, Jacob, for really making this world (even more) wonderful!
Wow Jacob... There isn't anything you've released that hasn't blown me away.
So creative & smooth. Beautiful work man.
From a little town in the province of Segovia, deep Spain, thank you, thank you, thank you, such a genius. I congratulate my self for finding you in the net, this is not only global but cosmic. From my sixty five years old, from the bottom of my heart, thank you and keep going.
More 'pop' sure - or whatever people saying about this video (good or bad) being more 'accessible' and 'mainstream' - doesn't matter at all. Does not matter. Art is art, and shouldn't be changed or censored because it is not mainstream enough or too mainstream. That shouldn't be a factor. This is really really really good. Makes me smile like a little kid.
Who cares if it's more or less of anything than previous videos.
It's art, and I enjoyed the hell out of this video, as I have all the others as well. Sometimes for different reasons or in different ways, but the objective is accomplished.
Wow, can't wait for more. Thank you, Jacob.
I can’t forget the emotion I felt when I first saw your youtube videos. I’m so glad I was born in the same ;lifetime as you!!!
I've, rather optimistically, added this to my "musical inspiration" playlist.
But to be honest, I should've created a "unreachably amazing music" playlist.
Jacob's bass playing on this is absolutely incredible...
This is the dopest track of 2014. Hands down. Indisputable. I was driving when I heard this, I nearly got into 10 accidents.
I think we've found the "Neo" of music. Lol.
soooo 😂🤣😂😂😋
Standing on the edge of chaos at 3.17 - 3.18 mins & yet we survived.
Thank you Jacob Collier & Cory Henry for new aids to Worship.
this laid back relentless groove is un-be-lie-va-ble. You're an alien. I saw all your videos how this is possible???
That bass solo in the end was uncalled for...sheeesh!
I always find my way back to this rendition. The harmonies just send me every time, especially the end.
Who still be listening in 2024?
Me and just introduce it to my brother who is a musician. 😊
My favorite rendition of this song👍
Me awwwwww!!!
I will still in 2050

So this is what living in the time of Mozart felt like.
If you were upperclass and had a ticket to the auditorium/theatre mozart was playing in then yes.
Music wasn't recorded then. Only the upper echelon of people, from relatively nearby, would have ever heard him play.
Why is everyone mentioning Mozart, but not Bach or Beethoven?
@@finnmckinlay Now i get it! Thanks!
Actually, all of them were gifted young musicians, but Mozart is the stereotype of a young genius because of some movies and popular stories about him.
I’d rather listen to Jacob lol
All people are so fascinated by your wizardry of rhythm and harmonics that they rarely comment your microtonal shifting, that gentle uptuning before even entering the song.
Bacharach through D'Angelo's timing: brilliant. And those voicings (and bass licks)!
Harmony, Arrangements, Vocals and Musicianship all perfect! My God that Bass was ridiculously beyond perfect!!!! In order to play the bass at that level in FUNK, you must haven't bathed in 15 years!!!! Now that's funky!!!
How does this have only this amount of views? The amount of musical knowledge, theory, and creativity to come up with this is plain superhuman. Literally didn't know about you 30 minutes ago, and I can say this is one of the craziest displays of musicianship I have ever seen.
Congrats. Work yourself through all his YT videos. Starting with his album „In my Room“ seems reasonable. 🍀
It truly is incredible. Even without considering music theory , this is a super creative rendition. I never would have thought of mixing hip hop/neo soul/d'angelo rhythm with this song.
The clarity that the Carpenters brought to the song is back, years later, but new. Thank you, Jacob.
You've completely reimagined one of my favourite songs and its unlike anything I've ever heard. Dude, this is a freakin' masterpiece.
Fan for life! Those who don't this, lol I understand. We tend to base what we like on what we have heard. Creativity is doing something new. My ear orgasms each time it hears newness. This kid is doing something amazing.
This is bananas! Bass line is ill! 4:27 til 5:35 is crazy! True musicianship! Wow!
Where quantum theory and music collide. Jacob's arrangements are like impossible aural puzzles. Magical sleight of sound.
Jacob, you will be the savior of 12 tone harmony in the modern world.
Haha "12 tone"
Good joke indeed 😁
3:57 the drop - just wow
Whoever gave this thumbs down is crazy. I love Jacob, his approach musically and most wouldn't be able to comprehend and understand. Keep doing you Jacob. You got a loyal fan/musician here in the USA
I saw Jacob live in London last year , he is such a talent , glad he is now winning lots of awards for his music .
If alone he was just a bass player he would still be amazing.
Fortunately, he can seemingly play everything, sing pretty much every sound the human ear is capable of hearing, and by now, has music itself by the balls, holding it to his every whim.
And I bloody love it :)
Digging this arrangement, vocals, and killer bass playing!
That bass is so funky I can smell it from Canada.
Keep doing your crazy thing dude.
Anyone who doesn't like this clearly has not listened to this with headphones on.
I don't like u and I listen to u with headphones on
+Arjun Menon 😂😂
Makai Guest bruh 😂😂😂
you don't need headphones to like this one!
R onek what does that even mean that he “doesn’t understand what he’s singing”
My God!! You are One Bad Kid!!! You are truly touched by God!!!
I'm not even going to lie, I didn't think I was going to enjoy this when I clicked on the link to this. Even at the start I had some doubt but then the the drums kicked in and that started to changed. Now I've listened to this 5 times already. Dude that was amazing!
He amazes me for the fact that he is obviously a avid listener of all forms of music and able to encompass all styles in his playing but how does he manage to make it so much his own.
I have never come across such an unaffected capable musician, composer and to me it is no mistake he grew up in London England where cultural boundaries are less severe.
He has many decriers within some spheres of musicians who see him as an elitist aided and abetted to success but all I hear is music like I have never heard before.
This dude is from another planet
We need a 8 hours version of that final chorus daaaamn 4:27
my hobby has now officially become watching him play the bass through this entire video
The little smile at 2:00 shows that he knows *just* how sick that lick just was
The music already fades away and a killer bassriff jumps in your ear… good heavens 😱
dude cant just casually drop masterpieces like this its unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
fact dude i agree!
i just cant stop coming back here listen to this brooo
What
Coming for my 100th listen....lol
That bass lick at -1.50 and -0.44 is so just so cold. Colliers feel is different makes me think he grew up in a black church as child lol
This channel will eventually become a museum.
... for Jacobology.
This man is so effortlessly talented.....just listen to the bass outro as well as all the keyboard voicings and then there's his amazing voice too. I know he plays more instruments but I feel so happy that Rick Beato directed me here. Great stuff.
It appears Jacob has been listening to D'Angelo's Voodoo. Got the Questlove drunken drum groove going on here. Sounds great as always Jacob.
+TheScunion I was just going say that. First thing that came to my mind - Questlove and Voodoo.
TheScunion He say he is a big fan of D'ANGELO.
I have cried so hard listening to this, fell in love with someone who was engaged, did not plan for that to happen. I heard that last "close to you" section repeating in my head over and over again for hours sometimes.
As a good friend put it, "You can't tell if it feels good or bad"
Excellent. Such a talent.
I'll listen to all your arrangements over and over....I don't even know how to approach them, but they all have something to look forward to. So so so so gifted Jacob...
Send help: I've fallen into a really, really deep pocket groove. Like, Mariana Trench deep. And I love it.
That ending is one of the most astonishing things I've ever heard.
Your multi-vocal chord movements in the chorus are my favorite part. This took a lot of work--inspirational!
didn't know him for so long. Started listening recently.
I've been blown back 5 feet away multiple times in this song alone. And then 4:24 gave me a near death experience
Dayum.
The groove is so addicting
The feel in this track is just insane. It feels impossible to me that one person pulled this off. Absolutely unreal. Wow.
For those who can't quite comprehend the groove and how it sounds "off" it's called playing behind the beat...or staggering it.. To find out more look up the likes of Questlove jdilla and d'Angelo

Love it! This is so incredibly fantastic beyond words.
hi !
Hey JB. This is your friend Randy, from Michigan, in the US. Hope all is well.... Waiting for something new from you my friend! Have a great Christmas!!!!
Imagine hearing this in 2016... And going to see him live in London supporting Terence Blanchard... Still hits super hard. The word genius is bandied about but Jacob really is a cut above the rest.
This is different from anything that I've heard from you, but (just like everything else that you create) it's FREAKING AMAZING!!! As a picture painter I always appreciate a GREAT PICTURE PAINTER, it's always an experience like non other with you!! Thanks for sharing your gift, I thank God for you!!!!

Seriously I have rewatched this like 15 or so times and it never fails to amaze me. Jacob's creativity is endless, from the beginning soundscape and visuals being constructed so thoughtfully to create the feeling of early morning time passing to the groove discrepancy being so goddamn phat with the vocals so behind the beat and the snare just slammed in the perfect spot before the beat it's all just so satisfying you're incredible jacob
The bass playing is just epic in itself!
I'm a yazz drummer, (Big Deal!!) this is the first song I have ever listened to on free to air radio and gone home and looked up PBS's playlist to discover the funk!! Go Jake!
This. is. CRAY. The bass awesomeness at the end just killed me. That dude has no limit.
Malika Tirolien yeah I want more of that lol
The only word that comes to mind is "How". I mean it is literally crazy how you take a simple song and turn into the most beautiful thing ever!! Jacob you are truly one in a BAGILLION!! You have mastered literally every instrument known to man. Not only do can rock an instrument your voice is beautiful! And the things that you do with is just out of this world! I mean you know how to put it together and everything. Your timing is impeccable! Like you don't wait on time, time waits on you! I hope you see this I know your very busy making new songs! I wish you the best of luck in everything that you! Keep exploring that gigantic imagination of yours!

Jacob, your are the Jedi of harmonization and rhythm. Absolutely fantastic!
I'm so in love with your music these days.....
The last part of the piece is from Mars, Genius!!!
I know quite a bit about harmony but man... This guy is sick!
What blows my mind is that the more I practice and the more I grow musically, the more I realize how far I'm from a talent like this. It becomes a beautiful realization and only a strong impulse and urge to become the best I can be.
