@@lissa755 Did you screw over your local residents and also sell your home for an inflated value? Same mentality, just to make it cheaper for yourself for a time.
@@ButcherBakerQuesoMaker the county is typically northern maine. Presque isle is the biggest town north of Houlton. It's also how you get to mapleton(I lived there until I was 8, then we moved to Presque isle). I recommend stopping at Houlton dairy farms, there's one in Houlton and Presque isle 😊
We love it here and the funny thing is, we are friends with just Mainers, nobody from away. Doing our best to integrate and love the Maine culture and way of life.
I heard too many horror stories and we passed moving to Maine. Taxes go up every year, which we are not use to in Pennsylvania. My retirement accounts would be taxed and I would need to pay state income taxes on my retirement. I currently pay no taxes on retirement or any state income tax. Then there is yearly taxes on your vehicles that you own. Medical care is lacking unless you are near the larger cities. Beautiful but expensive. Fuel costs to keep your home heated, buying wood in certain areas is non existent. Horror stories about the cable and electric companies and their rates. You need at least two sources of heat and a home generator is needed some places since you may be out of power for an extended period of time.
Those are all valid points. The yearly taxes on vehicles isn’t forever if you have used vehicles, the income tax went down for us coming from Oregon. We are near Bangor so medical care is fine, we own a wood lot so firewood isn’t an issue. We bought a backup generator and our power is cheaper than it was in Oregon. Our property taxes are low because we have our property in tree growth which is a tax incentive discount on growing trees for lumber products. The cost of living is lower here for us so we are happy. Hope you found your forever place.
@@ButcherBakerQuesoMaker umm, whoever told you that excise tax on automobiles is not forever was lying to you. It just goes down the first 6 model years, and from then on is the 'same' based on the current mil rate of taxation.
@RB Musser: Yep, they all think taxes are cheaper and this is some conservative refuge from 'progressive' states. Nope, and those rates will become even worse in coming years as a result of the exodus and influx.
I recall paying for title insurance when we closed on our home in NY many years ago. So if you got a Reader's Digest version of a report, what where the closing fees?
Great video, made me laugh, we also have building codes in our town in Maine...just one. 'If you build something, make sure it's 25 feet from your neighbors line." Now, with that being said, if you want to move to Maine, remember not to try and change it into where ever you came from. We had our neighbors dog bark non-stop for 7 years (we were grateful when it died!), and we never complained...why? Because when we wanted to run our chainsaw at 5 am building a house, the neighbors also didn't complain. Being a 'good neighbor' in Maine means basically ignoring a lot of stuff you may not have to put up with in other states, like...a junkyard out in front of your neighbors property...in Maine we are allowed 3 dead cars in the yard at any given time, and this really isn't enforced all that much. And those poles you own...yes, they are ALL yours...so when a tree comes down on them and they snap off, you get to buy another one...but each and every year you get a handy guide in your light bill that explains just how much that little mishap will cost you...LOL Well, that's my 2 cents (probably worth half of that), and welcome to the great State O' Maine!
Thanks, all those points you made are the reason we moved and the reason we are so happy here. Everyone minds their own business for the most part and if someone wants to shoot, no problem. We have befriended all Mainers and are trying our best to integrate and become part of the community and culture. Quite the opposite to some people around here who now want a loud noise ordinance, lol, in a rural area it is ridiculous.
@@ButcherBakerQuesoMaker Well, that ruins the rural nature that they were enjoying before you and others arrived. So, you blame them? I had loud car stereos before moving to the state 15 years ago. I cut that out quite quickly. It's called making sacrifices to enjoy the change you embraced when you sought refuge from your troubles elsewhere. Small price to pay for the savings you gain in getting out of more expensive locales.
We bought our house in Maine and we had to pay the 2.5% because we were buyers from out of state! I was like wtf but we got a great deal and i didnt mind paying it after i raised hell about it!!
I too am an native Oregonian that has watched my state become swallowed up by the decay of Californication/progressive policies etc.... I can't afford land here anymore and I am looking to come to Maine for the cheaper property prices and hopefully more conservative, traditional values.
@@Helmholtzwatson1984 Lower your expectations then, big time. If you do what so many others have, and sell your home there for an exorbant amount, only to buy here for what seems like cheap to you, but is really the inflated prices that have grown over these recent years (that investors, speculators, and even Mainers blinded by money have encouraged), then all you're doing is chasing greener grass, but only for a time. In just the decades that I have lived here, it is this migratory habit of people from states like yours, and the original posters home state, that has quickly started turning Maine into exactly what you are running away from. You know that old saying that you cannot escape your problems forever, well, that's true. Maine will be another West Coast wasteland (enviromentally, financially, and politically) of its own in another, oh, I expect 10-20 years tops. The process was sped up just that much more over these past two years. Massachusetts and New Yorkers have been helping all the same, even long before the rest of those who think this is some long term safe haven.
@@mic4902 the only hope is the californians, Oregonian, and Washington folks can't handle the winters and leave asap. Maine is definitely becoming more like cali every month. I really do hate being so mean, but its just facts the more they come from those states the faster the state goes to hell. Look at texas, so many californians turning cities into shitholes like where they came from. I have experience in both places changing for the worse and its unfortunate they turn their new homes to what they left behind in the first place.
Maine has a lot of beautiful places. The air by the coast is great! I was hoping people from the west coast escaping climate change would move here. I did. We need to expand the Downeastern train to connect east and west of the state.

There are cultural differences everywhere in the US and we were just bringing to light what we noticed to let other people know.
@@ButcherBakerQuesoMaker I knew it, you're just that much more a part of the problem. You'll definitely drive up prices, and are the reason why rates will go as high as they need to.

And as you can see the production value was very low, we were just making a fun video. There are plenty of articles with insights on buying property in Maine but we are not experts. Best of luck
@@richardfiedler2201 check property taxes before you look at houses. Some areas to the south have astronomically high property taxes. North in “the county” meaning Aroostook county, the largest county in Maine has a lot less property taxes than the south. We live in Hancock county and they are doable but we wanted to be on the coast. The property market appears to be cooling off right now, and there are a lot more listings. Also foreclosures are going to start hitting the market so keep an eye out for those. And be warned, the locals can be very xenophobic towards outsiders because some people move here and try to change it into where they moved from. Our advice is to find a place where you could be happy to live and just live your life. The people here once you get to know them are extremely kind and wonderful, but can have a hard shell like a coconut. It’s not the open friendly way of the South. Lol, there are places here that have zero zoning, building restrictions are minimal. Perhaps you didn’t go far enough east in Maine. Good luck with your search the heat in Texas is what sucks.
Depends on the area you choose. In 1990 I bought four acres in South western Maine. I built a post frame hay bale tiny house, (600 sq. ft.) Building permit five bucks! The only inspector we saw was for the septic system. Lived in it four years and built a two level, (part in ground), super insulated, double walled, passive solar octagonal house. Septic system inspection only. With so many new people coming in, things are changing. Be aware of the utility companies. (BIG bills) and ever increasing tax's.

It’s from the 80’s, but I’m sure could still be relevant.
I currently live in California, and I have been looking at homes in Maine (I would be a cash buyer) and I’m hoping to make the move within the next couple of months. This video has helped tremendously! Thank you!
It is buyer beware out here. Get a contractor you trust to do a home inspection. There are a lot of places building codes are not enforced except for plumbing and electrical. And depending on the area, don’t expect high speed internet. Just a warning.
@@ButcherBakerQuesoMaker I actually decided on Maine! I went there and absolutely fell in love. I can’t wait to relocate and start my new life there in the spring!
@Fred Trump unfortunately these states start to get overpopulated by them and slowly starts turning into what they left
Please don’t leave us alone here in our state.
I live in the center of Maine. Lincoln. If you are rich move to the coast. If your a outdoorsmen go to the north. Stay away from Kennebunkport
Good video glad you know about how things can go in Maine. As they say
" It's the way life should be." And remember it should stay that way.🙃
Just go with it. Don't try to change things. There is an old saying " What's good enough for my father & his ect. Is good enough for me.
Oh & Unless Your Born in Maine you'll never be a Mainer you'll always be an Out of Stater. Mainers are the salt of the earth. Good luck🕊
Mainers are idiots to think that their relatives didn't come from somewhere else. If stupidity is the way life should be, yeah, Mainers are exemplary of that motto.
Really appreciate your insights. Did you buy your property sight unseen?
Probably, like a lot of desperate fools.
Did you buy your Oregon in White City? I'm in Eagle Point, so that came to mind. We are going to Maine to look next month. So over the heat and smoke here. Just stumbled on this video - interesting!
Yes!!! We used to live in Sams Valley. Let us know if you have any questions about Maine. Katie@teamshoe.org
Oh my stars . Welcome! If you travel to The County, yup a whole other place…..in Northern Maine. Stop on into the Mapleton Diner would love to meet ya and talk for a while……
Yes! We’ve heard about The County. Where is the Mapleton Diner? That would be fun
We moved up to the county a few months ago.We love it!!!We where living in the Farmington area our house was to big for just the two of us now that our kids are grown. So we went for more land and a smaller house!!!!

Mainer all my life, and an islander 2!! lol ya, all are cute Haha! :) Welcome to Maine~
We love it here and the funny thing is, we are friends with just Mainers, nobody from away. Doing our best to integrate and love the Maine culture and way of life.
It’s incredibly expensive to live here. I hope you both do well and enjoy being here.
I live in Maine and you are pretty spot on with all your comments
Around $2000 for title fees
Mainers like to speak their mind, and be left alone at the same time , in my eyes youre a Mainer ,so start fitting in, contribute to it
You own the pole and line, you repair it from the street/utility ownership point.
That’s why we have buried it from the pole to the house
My question.
If, you already has the money to buy the house with your spouse what are the other requirements will you need in terminal of documents?
I too am an native Oregonian that has watched my state become swallowed up by the decay of Californication/progressive policies etc.... I can't afford land here anymore and I am looking to come to Maine for the cheaper property prices and hopefully more conservative, traditional values.
Pffffft, you deserve to be taken advantage of here. Welcome! Lol
You're going to love the conservative taxes here, hahahahahaha.
@@mic4902 I just said I was looking into it, not that I made up my mind.
Yall are cool 😎 I love the west coast, welcome to the east coast

Maine has a lot of beautiful places. The air by the coast is great! I was hoping people from the west coast escaping climate change would move here. I did. We need to expand the Downeastern train to connect east and west of the state.

@@ButcherBakerQuesoMaker thank you I will look for those sites. I'm also looking for my first home in Maine. No nothing about the process
People go out of their way to help you if you need it. Good luck on your journey, we are getting ready to restart this channel, but living here has been way harder and busier than we ever thought. There is always something to get ready for.

Lol, there are places here that have zero zoning, building restrictions are minimal. Perhaps you didn’t go far enough east in Maine. Good luck with your search the heat in Texas is what sucks.
Stay in your own state cheapo
Depends on the area you choose. In 1990 I bought four acres in South western Maine. I built a post frame hay bale tiny house, (600 sq. ft.) Building permit five bucks! The only inspector we saw was for the septic system. Lived in it four years and built a two level, (part in ground), super insulated, double walled, passive solar octagonal house. Septic system inspection only.
