  • Is James Bond dead? What is the current state of Bond after Barbara Broccoli said, work hasn't even begun on a new film? With Bond dying in the last film and fans all across the globe waiting for some kind of news of their hero returning, the tone in social media comments has started to shift. Are Bond fans behaving like they're entitled to another installment in the franchise?
Together with my guest, fellow content creator Jeroen (a.k.a. DutchBondFan), I will explore these questions in detail and share opinions on where we see Bond heading.

Excellent discussion with lots of great points that reflect how so many of us feel.
Being James Bonds Joe Darlington was one of the few fans who actually liked the ending of NTTD and he did make a great observation.
He basically suggested that - to the Bond Producers -
that terrible ending was a REAL ending for the James Bond franchise for now.
They meant to kill him off and then just take a long long break.
We did not want to see that but maybe that’s what’s really going on.
Here we are all excited and anxious for a new Bond film while the creators are apparently not even working on anything.
Or even interested in the character anymore.
As fans - it’s hard not to get angry at this.
And at this point I really would love to see them sell to someone as excited about James Bond as all of us fans are.
      As you pointed out-
      When they said
“ James Bond will return” at the end of NTTD
it was a promise from the filmmakers to all of us fans not to worry because we will see Bond again very soon.
So now it seems like a false promise - which is why we are so disappointed and frustrated at what is going on.
But it also could be something else -
Maybe since they killed him off, they just have no idea what to do next!

@@johnrigs6540 In my opinion Barbara Broccoli in fact hated Bond and the success her father did with it. She looked for a way to destroy the Franchise. With the Daniel Craig movies you can see it from the beginning. She stripped part by part the Bond things the fans loved. At the end no Bond girl, no Champaigne and the people around Bond start dying. Broccoli has no intention to start over with Bond. All her statements are for winning time until nobody asks anymore. May be there will once a sale of the Franchise but then it is only half the worth of it today. But obviously she has enough money to get over it and the fans.

So even without a new movie in active development, I have this enjoy. Also, the video game Project 007 from IO Interactively is still in production for a release sometime next year. Looking forward to playing a new video game since 007 Legends was a real let down.

I think she wanted to stamp her own legacy on the Bond franchise by serializing it and giving it 'depth' and soap opera moments throughout the Daniel Craig era. Unfortunately, she doesn't have the talent, genius or work ethic to create or reinvent a brand new genre. Unlike Cubby and Saltzman: two men who invented a new genre of cinema: the Bond film. The formula they honed worked for forty years so it should work for forty more. The producers seemed to have forgotten what made Bond work in the first place: formula. @@haraldsulzmann3893

Absolutely, Barbara Broccoli has lost ALL interest in the franchise, I don't think she's got Craig out of her system yet, paying him disgusting amounts of money, making him executive producer and financing his theatre show.....

she did a thoroughly good job of deconstructing and shaming James Bond. M and Vesper excoriate him for acting like an idiot, he throws his best friend Felix into the garbage dumpster, M faces her murderer alone because her protector Bond is too busy fighting, he keeps dropping his gun, and so on. So many examples of how the character has been trashed, emasculated. Barbara Broccoli killed James Bond creatively before she blew him up, and Daniel Clueless helped her.@@peterfranks6243

If they had a direction to go with after NTTD they would have gone with it immediately. There can be little doubt that something has happened to put a wrench into the works, they only question is of course what that is. Best case scenario (perhaps) is that they genuinely have no idea what to do and they're just sitting around waiting for an idea to appear but in my book that's still called having a problem on your hands.

After the poor No Time to Die, the best way to reboot the franchise would be to return to the roots of the character and the novels. A gritty new adaptation of the Moonraker book with a period accurate 1950s setting would be welcome, if admittedly unlikely to happen today.

It’s time for new blood in EON management. Barbara is going to run it into the ground. NTTD was a downer of a movie. It’s time to let someone who loves Bond and the franchise to step in make it something people can love again.

  • @EthanKnight97

NTTD was a film for the first time as a fan not only was I disappointed but I felt betrayed. The crucial takeaway was Broccoli and Wilson subverted and killed Bond to satisfy the actor and themselves. Part of a long trend of de-masculinizing and toppling iconic male characters in general. Luke Skywalker, John Connor and Indiana Jones etc.
In our current cultural conformity, I can't see an authentic James Bond being depicted on screen again as he is seen by those in charge as misogynistic and "toxicly masculine"
I hope by some miracle I'm wrong but with how the franchise is being run they don't seem to care and I rather see the franchise end rather than it being ruined further. But everything pre Craig I will always be a Bond fan and hold will for ever hold dear.

Very enjoyabe discussion with some very interesting points. It appears Eon wants to take its time for the next incarnation of Bond. They won’t do it until they feel ready, so there will be a long gap until 007 does return. Ok, they’re basically going to reboot the series, so they’re taking their time to plan that. Fine. But jumping ahead from there, once the series is rebooted, I wonder if the films will continue to have long gaps in the next phase of Bond films or will Eon be motivated to make them at a quicker pace when they decide on a new direction for the series. Will they have a renewed enthusiasm to make them or will 5-6 year (or longer) releases just become the norm for Bond movies?

I saw OHMSS when it came out in 1969 in the theatre as a 5 year old and to be honest at this point I don't really care any more. EON doesn't seem to give a shit about Bond so why should I ? They couldn't even be bothered to release the complete series on 4K UHD for the 60th anniversary. I've become a fan of Mission Impossible so that is my substitute if Bond never returns. At least Tom Cruise respects and values the fans.

I remember watching the behind the scenes for NTTD. After DC’s last scene, I remember that Barbara was in tears and hugging Daniel. It seemed to me at that time, that she had formed a closer connection with him than she had with some of the others. I had a feeling that she was thinking (or gave the impression at least) of wanting to end it there and do something different.
I agree that if they really want to make it fit with the current narratives, that I would also call it quits with franchise. It is getting increasingly difficult to come up with fresh locations and that sense of romance, it can’t really get any grittier. I would personally like to see them go back to the 80’s or something, partly because I love the cars of that era so much.

    • @TheBondBulletin
      @TheBondBulletin  5 месяцев назад

Barbara cried when she was on the phone with Pierce, telling him that they had decided to move on without him. I am sure that she has a very close connection to both Brosnan and Craig. Everyone works so closely together on a film production of that scale, it's impossible not to feel emotion. But yes, Craig can be called her favourite. She said something similar herself multiple times.

It was great to listen to this talk. There were mor information than in all these news around the Franchise and castings based on unqualified rumors. I'm just 70 and watched Bond movies since the 60s. My first one was "You only live twice" and the Bond virus was implanted in me. Then I started to see every Bond movie beginning with Dr. No. With the Daniel Craig Bonds I began to be more critical about the movies. It wasn't about Daniel Craig, it was about the story lines. Something changed in a way, like you guys said in your talk, to a more destructive story telling. Skyfall was for me a very good movie but I would never watch it today, when I want to see a Bond movie for entertainment. Then I go back to the Sean Connery movies, Roger Moore also Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan. Even knowing the movies and the outcome, at the end I have this smile on my face. And I like it when I here the Bond Girls saying "Oh James". I know it's not to say today but that is one of the small things to characterize Bond. Or when Sean Connery teaches the guys in "Diamonds are forever" that he knows there is no year for a Sherry but he can define the year of the wine where the Sherry produced from and the barrel. These little small things got lost more and more. NTTD was a good action movie but not a Bond. For this I can watch Mission Impossible, Burne Identity or the Jack Ryan seasons. I remember when I watched the Bond movies in cinemas, there were always parts in the movie where alle the people start laughing. In the Craig movies I never heard that. Bond had always a USP. If you take that away it's simply an action movie and there are better ones outside in the world. The Jack Ryan seasons would come closer to a Bond story in my opinion. But if the producers don't want all that and making experiments and cover the Zeitgeist, then it's better to end the Franchise here.

I have lived through many years of having Bond movies released very regularly. This has been frustrating waiting so long, but I wonder if they have shot themselves in the foot and they don't know how to go forward at this point. Maybe they have run out of material they want to use and have to look into different writers and their material now. But we all do want different things for sure since we all have different tastes and viewpoints of existing Bond movies. I agree and I think the Broccolis are being a bit too precious about it. First, there plenty of excellent continuation novels they could adapt. Anything by Raymond Benson, Charlie Higson or Anthony Horowitz, just to name a few, would be amazing. All we want as fans is a good individual story, two good fight scenes, one vehicle chase, a huge stunt, beautiful locations and a stunning woman or two. That's it! That's all it takes. It doesn't have to relevant, meaningful or emotional. We had all of that with Craig, been there done that, time to move on and start cranking out some ripping good action adventures! See you in London at Q-The Music in October!

I say they wrap it up. We had a good run. It was already straining it after they rebooted the timeline for Casino Royale. Now Bond's had a daughter and died... not much more to do with the character. The appeal of the character was his longevity. Having him potentially die now after each actor's tenure is gonna weaken the appeal.

I do dislike it when fans make personal attacks on creatives in general and it really doesn't achieve anything. George Lucas said part of the reason he sold Star Wars to Disney is that he didn't want to make anymore as all he heard was negativity. Given Bond is a massive IP it will be back in some form [whether Eon do it or like Star Wars a new company buys the property] but all fans can do is wait and getting angry or upset isn't good for them.

if you have a franchise you are going to have to reboot, and you don't want to do that work for a few years, why not give it over to someone else with a fresh new vision? Best case scenario you have a very successful movie to build on, worst case scenario you have to reboot the franchise which you were going to have to do anyway ... if they had thought like this in 2019 / 2020 we would probably be discussing opinions on a new outsider Bond film by now. I think the answer is that the producers are too precious over the Daniel Craig era, and don't want to 'disrespect' it by making more movies so soon ... but for Bond fans the view of the era is much more mixed and we just see it as part of a longer cannon. we don't want to wait for every 10 years to reboot the franchise like is common with Ghostbusters or spiderman or whatever.

I’ve appreciated all they’ve done taking over from Cubby, but they need to get it to someone who wants to move forward and is excited to bring a new chapter to 007. One question I have is what about Amazon. They own half of Bond and you would think they would want to get a new film developed sooner than later.

There was only 6 of us in the theatre and it was opening day. Back when Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were Bond. It was lines down the street to see it on opening day. We all walked out at the end of the film like that was it for Bond, that was the end of an era. It was a very somber feeling, kind of like going to a funeral of an old family friend.
I'm glad you talked about Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning. I was very disappointed with that movie. Having the main villain as an AI was stupid, I thought. Also, Cruise looked old in the movie 🎥🍿 and I wasn't believing it anymore. They should have stayed with the concept/formula that they developed back with Ghost Protocol (My favorite Mission Impossible movie by the way). The concept that the IMF agents are a bunch of hackers, and criminals who are facing intergenerational prison time, but can avoid all that by being recruited into a covert intelligence agency. I've never heard of that before, even back in the tv shows. That seemed to make it less professional, kind of like Wagner Group using death row inmates in Ukraine.

Rumour has it they will do a retro Bond, perhaps set in the sixties. I can see that working for a while, but they can’t do it forever. Then what? Will Bond be resurrected from a remnant of his DNA? A bit of a stretch isn’t it?

Absolutely dead. For me, the last great Bond film was GoldenEye(1995). And the last good Bond film was TWINE(1999). The whole Daniel Craig era was a hell of a pain for me. The first 3 movies were tolerable/okay but the last 2 were quite terrible. Spectre(2015) & NTTD(2021) are the worst James Bond films ever! It was not James Bond anymore. It was "dirty", unglamorous, depressive... So, for me, the franchise ended with Brosnan in 2002. ***** I see no future for Bond. No one/nothing can surpass Connery and Moore anyway! Actually, there is one option. Make a film where 2024 Russia and its Terrorist Mafia Dictatorship is the main enemy! But I know that unfortunately they don't have the courage to do that..............................

If these films are "taking much longer to make now than they did in the past," my question would then be: why can't they just go back to making them like they did in the past? Real, practical effects and a slimmer bureaucracy resulting in efficiency, cohesion, less expense, and better aesthetic (i.e) more thrilling results. The John Glen helmed films, for example, were a well oiled machine. As for entitlement, I don't think we the fans are entitled at all. I suspect the main problem is that Barbara doesn't care about telling stories about straight, white men anymore, especially if it compromises her invite to the chic cocktail parties. Her loyalty to the brand is waning, if not dead. Thanks for a great discussion, fellas!

After giving some serious thought, there is a way to bring the Bond franchise back. When Daniel Craig joined they modernised and re-worked Casino Royale. So how about this? Modernise & re-work You Only Live Twice, make it so Bond isn't dead but seriously disfigured and the subsequent plastic surgery required would justify a new actor in the role. It makes perfect sense, it just needs Barbara Broccoli to show some enthusiasm.

I know this may seem off but, John Wick to me laid the groundwork for James Bond to work in the future. He’s out to kill the people who dragged him back into a life he didn’t want. Sounds too simple to work. But the filmmaking behind it, from the direction to the outstanding combat scenes to the very simple, old school editing with minimal cuts and the actors actually doing most of their own stunt work, proved to me that there is still a huge demand for well crafted filmmaking in the action genre. Bond is no different. Why are Casino Royale and Skyfall constantly held as Craig’s best films? Because of all of those same reasons. Why are QoS, Spectre and No Time To Die not as loved? Partly because all of them are shallow and complex AND are direct sequels where as CR and Skyfall are stand alone. When the next Bond comes out, I hope that they go back to a more simple and deep story with an emphasis on good filmmaking from top to bottom, rather than trying to make each Bond their own stand alone universe where every film needs to connect.

As I have said elsewhere, never confuse no headlines for no developments. The amount of big film franchise producers who reveal big news about their projects on other people's red carpets is about 0%. And when it comes to non-Bond projects, box-office and monetary success is not why creative people do things. TILL was not a 'flop'. To me it is also a false equivalency to bring in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE for comparisons - although it is worth mentioning that the most recent film did not fare well and the next part is being recalibrated, so its success is not guaranteed in the slightest. Die-hard Bond fans - or indeed any franchise fans - do not make a film successful. Controversial statement I am sure. But a Bond film is an event made up of MANY audiences across the world. The success of BOND 26 will be made by folk who do not even notice what the title is called on that day that is announced.

Someone somewhere perhaps will want to make a Bond film that might be relevant to that person. Myself, I would be fascinated if they did make a period piece as these gentleman do bring up. One would be a 1950's LIVE AND LET DIE. Second generation wealth ....
Compare Barbara with her father, the business he created, the background he was from. Hard work and devotion to its success became a self perpetuating family enterprise of which he was the padrone. It became no longer just about the money, but a reason for being and a context for the family dynamic.
For the next generation, with its own interests, of necessity different from that of the father, it becomes more akin to a perpetual wealth generator. All the better when prestige is attached to it. That way it becomes collateral in facilitating other, "more interesting" projects. Being the "Bond producer" will open every door. So no need to actually made them that often. The prestige and the power have already accrued ....

    Off topic...
I saw your earlier video about the next Bond/Henry Cavill as the next Bond. I would suggest he's got zero chance. His two films with him starring as a spy - Argylle (2024) and Man From Uncle (2015) were huge box office flops. Cavill has zero box office appeal.
I accept movie stars are very few in number these days - the internet killed off the movie star - but even so, there's no financial incentive to cast a proven box office dud as Cavill in the role of Bond. Cavill was also not asked back to play Superman and quit The Witcher.
It would make far more sense to cast an unknown actor with no prior box office failure 'baggage' because
    A) cheaper to hire than an established actor trying his best to get a high salary.
    B) no prior audience association with a well known role.
    C) no poor box office history.
You don't need a huge star (not that there any huge British film stars anymore, there are none) but even so, you don't need one to get people to see Bond. The hype for Bond 26 will generate box office. Henry Cavill won't generate any hype. Had he been a proven box office actor - if Argylle and Man From Uncle had done moderate box office - then considering Cavill would make economic sense but those films were emphatic box office failures so there's zero evidence Cavill would generate any enthusiasm from film goers. Same is true about Idris Elba. Has zero box office appeal. Never had even a moderate box office hit as leading actor. Eon could find anyone, a new George Lazenby, with zero prior acting experience. It would have zero negative impact on the film's box office.

    • @TheBondBulletin
      @TheBondBulletin  5 месяцев назад

I'm convinced that a rather unknown, unused face will be cast as the next Bond. I don't think the lead actor is necessarily the reason why many films bomb at the box office. There are many factors at play why people choose not to watch a particular film in the cinema. The trailer for Argylle didn't exactly make me yearn to go to the cinema. Not because of Cavill, but because I had the feeling that the film is similar to others and the CGI effects looked weird. As much as I like Matthew Vaughn, I gave this one a pass and will wait for streaming. Multiply that by x and you get our modern problem why films flop.
Of all the new films I watched in 2023, I only went to see four in the cinema. And even then, my experience was ruined by people not knowing how to behave in cinemas - talking loudly, eating tons of food like it's a restaurant, using their phones with full screen brightness. It's not fun anymore.

This is different. James Bond died. James Bond is dead. You can reboot 007 with different actors, but not a dead Bond. They should now create another fictional character to portray the MI6 007 agent. You just need some original thought like the creator of James Bond had. Come up with another cool name with a different personality as the new 007 agent. And/or make MI6 and the 007 agent the focus instead of only one particular man as 007. Look at how MI6 actually functions to preserve the status quo. Bring back the fun megalomaniacal world conquering villain. Like in The Spy Who loved Me and Moonraker. Only this time the bad guy wins, his or her vision for the future gets realized. MI6 fails to prevent change.

All this wokifying has squeezed every last ounce of fun, cheekiness, and character out of these films snd the last one was the worst so far. I would rather watch Diamonds are Forever 10 times over than look at Daniel Craig’s miserable face as Bond. Again, a lovely bit of nonsense. Nothing more, nothing less. Bond fans are behaving like they're entitled to a nostalgic Bond film that returns to the lightweight Brosnan and Moore films that were often slapstick and bear little resemblance to modern-day entertainment. I seem to be the rare Bond fan who likes the character to actually change (in small ways. We want Bond to be Bond of course). Craig revolutionized the character and showed you can explore the man's psyche. EON, especially Barbara Broccoli, clearly loves this approach. She's been wanting to explore the serious side of the character for quite some time. Even with Brosnan, there were glimpses of depth, but it really took off with Craig.
The problem most Bond fans have is nostalgia.
