"Because nobody cares about a few forgotten lunitics" is a line that haunts me to this day. That's the scariest thing about Outlast imo. It's not the runny hidey stuff, or the paranormal stuff, it's the bleak hopelessness of the suffering of a vulnerable population. The only thing keeping those people alive is a profit margin. It's terrifying because that part is realistic, it's happened before and could still be happening now and we wouldn't even know. Sad stuff really.
There are so few people that understand that that’s the point of the game. It highlights the very real experimentation done on vulnerable people in the 20th century and expounds upon it in order to give us a dire warning: stop ignoring these people. Their suffering and torment was only possible because the rest of the world decided to look away, and gave a megacorp the opportunity to strike.

Which is interesting because we see in his journey (SPOILERS) how he starts getting the side effects of the experiment after witnessing the wallrider. Craving the static like an itch - the patients you see in the beginning are watching static. Hearing whispers at increasing volume and beginning to "understand" them. Then of course he ends up (ENDING SPOILER) being a successful "variant" and becoming the host for the wallrider at the end.

I think it's just as scary as when i watched you play the first time. It's the chatty enemies that made it uniquely scary back then, and make it scary now -- i can't think of many other games that feature that at the same level (every enemy/ character acting like an individual)
The music/score is also one of the best "tension builders" upon getting caught and while running from crazies. Pretty sure that's the exact same thing that happened to CJUgames about 4-6 months ago. He got a "legit" e-mail wanting him to accept key to try out beta game. Soon as he clicked on link his RUclips channel got hacked locking him out. He had to jump thru hoops to get it back to normal. He actually made a video explaining everything; very interesting, but scary how easy they got him.
its really amazing that it's become like you said, the "i've seen this before but that's because of all the games it influenced". also, trager's cardio joke just slotted into place in my head. haha. what a great game.
You might already know this but he replayed it on twitch about 4 years ago. It’s a good watch!! There’s 4 parts. I’d love to see him do a still scary on it because it’s one of my favourite games but I’m not sure if he will seeing as he has the twitch play through
One thing I am increasingly impressed with is how freaking visceral this game is. Also the corporate logos are so well done in video games. I wish real companies were as innovative.
A walking sim is a "game" where you walk and things happen automatically. The player's input has little to no consequence to the gameplay. A lot of horror games have too much walking (e.g. Slenderman), but the simple fact that something chases you and you can either escape it or die a bunch saves it from being a walking sim. Same if there are meaningful puzzles etc.
John, my mom just got diagnosed with cancer. Your videos are one of the few things helping me get through the day. You're such a good guy, and I just wanted to thank you for what you do. Take care.

I have been hoping like hell you would replay this, my husband and I were literally just talking about it last night. I hate that I have to wait till he gets home to watch it. 😂 Thank you, as always, for the video.
Honestly I’ve found that it’s easy to just get detected and run. For example if an enemy’s checking a locker next to you, get out of the one you’re in and run to the objective. I managed to beat the game on the second hardest difficulty (Nightmare) fairly easily. 2 is significantly harder though.
@@JohnWolfe yeah John how are we gonna know if something is still scary if you don't explicitly say "hey guys it's John, yeah this one is still scary, anyways think critically!"
I love the perspective on the whistleblower DLC, the way they connected the two protagonist's points of view within the game as the story progresses for them both its extremely well done, especially for the whistleblower...
Outlast 2 was not a bad game, but man was it disappointing. The gameplay mechanics it introduced were cool but unfortunetely weren't utilized very well. And the level design was sooo linear. There weren't as many enemy stealth sections because the again most of the game was incredibly linear and because the enemy AI is so busted that is able to see and track you easier than the fucking mosquitos. Most of Outlast 2's encounters are mostly chases and they become old really, really fast. Don't even get me started on the story...
John, one of your mostly silent but loyal viewers here. I have not watched this yet, but I love your content and your recent dive into some older games. Thank you and please never stop making awesome video's :)
Outlast is my favorite horror game of the first half of the 2010s, I've beaten it at least 5 times on almost every difficulty (except Insane, you're insane yourself if you think I'm playing on Insane difficulty anytime soon)
@@carltonhanks6679 The amount of batteries, and the damage you take As an example, I remember that the fat guy (Chris Walker) kills you in two hits in Normal, however he'll insta-kill you in any other difficulty
I beat that shit on insane. Insane is literally the same as nightmare except there's no checkpoints so I beat nightmare a couple times to prepare and then it was easy. It was annoying though because I died from the ghost guy at the very end and was put back to the start and ended up rage quitting
Just before the 50:00 minute mark, when he mentions "seeing something in the camera maybe a glitch," you can actually see a shimmer on the camera. I think toggling the NV blocked it this time.
Outlast is a horror game that relies too heavily on shock factor to scare you. A good horror game should let you scare yourself, not the other way around.
Seeing a new upload from John: YAY! Seeing ‘Outlast’ in the title and remembering being scared to the CORE: NAY! But it’s John playing so ‘yay!’ eitherway😊

I love your pacing and your commentary style, and your voice is nice to listen to. Thanks for everything!
It's funny, for me Outlast is the only horror game I played through to the end. Normally I get too anxious trying to play myself too, but at some point I was obsessed with watching others play horror. For some reason something about this game made me want to try it myself.
@@Miss_Mewiththat I got to the point at the very beginning where you get into the building, crawl through the vent and them someone screams in your face and slams the door. I crawled back into the vent and quit the game never to open it again.
Man I tried playing Outlast several years ago and after getting past Trager, I was done and haven't picked it back up. It was exhausting getting through his part.
Can I just say how much I appreciate the dynamic between John and us as his community with us constantly complaining and John roasting us back every chance he gets? 😂 I mean we're balancing the 'being kinda di*kish to each other, but not overdoing it' thing rather well, we're not being overly polite with each other (like a lot of other communities tend to be), but still tolerable i.m.o. and I think that's a really great way of dealing with each other. Just feels so natural and honest to me, if you know what I mean 😁 (Thank you for providing that kind pf space for us, John 🙏)
I remember playing this game when it first came out and it was so scary to me I had to take breaks frequently because it was physically exhausting me getting that scared so much. So neat to see it again in 2021. John you've got me cracking up with the whole air of just being fed up with these crazies and just strolling on through most of the game. Awesome playthrough, glad you chose this to give a second go. :D
Outlast is a legendary game. IMO it’s the best horror game out there and an absolutely insane ride from beginning to end, so happy to see people are still playing it and talking about it to this day
I think the found footage/video camera aspect of this game helps it hold up even as it gets older and older. You’re not distracted by thinking “damn this game looks old”. And of course the atmosphere, scares, chases, etc will be terrifying and iconic until the end of time.
I’m not gonna lie.... when John finished RE8 I was a little saddened! Because I was there every upload, it became something I looked forward to after work lol. Hope this hits the same!
I mean the chase scenes are scary, but the psychological aspect of so many horrors games is so played out and misrepresented to begin with. It's just boring. It's all 1950's psychological misunderstandings during a time when people were locked up for anything. I hope the genre dies personally.
@@27Binx72 I feel as though people misunderstand the term psychological horror. It feels like a catch all term for anything related to mental illness, but often overlook that the point is really to fuck with the player’s brain. Killing a monster, but it’s “in your mind” isn’t actually Psychological horror it’s just regular horror with a sign that says Psychological on it. The best games put both of these elements together in order to trick the player into confusing when something is real and fake. Think shadows in the backdrop making the player uneasy as the haplessly try to determine which is benign and which is potentially lethal.
Ah, yes. Outlast. This was one of the first horror games I watched people play on youtube. I wasn't used to horror yet, so this game got me scared to walk in my house at night. It felt like Chris walker would attack me at any moment. 😅

53:21 got me (jumpscare). also; I feel like Trager should have taken a bit longer to die in the elevator. would you really die immediately from that? his body was still whole. it could have created some interesting conversation for a few more seconds. *Edit:* I Googled and it depends on how long blood flow is cut off from your brain. Trager's body is still whole and his lungs weren't crushed (looks like it's at his stomach area) so he probably could have survived, and have that be the one person Miles has to kill by himself.

The score is so good that I use it in Left 4 Dead for tanks and witches. It works eerily well.
its really amazing that it's become like you said, the "i've seen this before but that's because of all the games it influenced". also, trager's cardio joke just slotted into place in my head. haha. what a great game.
This video gives me hope for a Cry of Fear “Still Scary?” episode
Oh my gosh! yeah that'd be awesome🥲
You might already know this but he replayed it on twitch about 4 years ago. It’s a good watch!! There’s 4 parts. I’d love to see him do a still scary on it because it’s one of my favourite games but I’m not sure if he will seeing as he has the twitch play through
cry of fear is still the scariest game ive ever played after all these years
One thing I am increasingly impressed with is how freaking visceral this game is.

Jesus christ i was just watching an outlast speedrun
I was attempting like 4-5 days ago outlast speedrun lol
I was searching for his old outlast gameplay yesterday
i was replaying and making my brother try it
There's just something so satisfying about outlast speedruns

Thank you for all the nice content and editing.
John, my mom just got diagnosed with cancer. Your videos are one of the few things helping me get through the day. You're such a good guy, and I just wanted to thank you for what you do. Take care.
All the luck and peace to you and your family, it's a hard process.

Oh but it has always been here looming in the dark.It was only a while before it would rear it's face again....I really can't wait for outlast 3 to come out watching him play it should be fun
Heard they are making another one due out this year which is a prequel to the other games called The Outlast Trials and then Outlast 3!
I'm very excited for the outlast trails
I remember that instant death event when you approach a patient facing a fall. You were doing so well with your No-Death Run until that cheap shot.
I have been hoping like hell you would replay this, my husband and I were literally just talking about it last night. I hate that I have to wait till he gets home to watch it. 😂 Thank you, as always, for the video.
great username
Honestly I’ve found that it’s easy to just get detected and run. For example if an enemy’s checking a locker next to you, get out of the one you’re in and run to the objective. I managed to beat the game on the second hardest difficulty (Nightmare) fairly easily. 2 is significantly harder though.
the original outlast was a classic and trendsetter- man, outlast 2 dropped that ball hard
Outlast 2 was the shit!!! It was just different but I loved them both
2 isn't terrible. The probpem is that Red Barrels didn't give the series any more segue, like not even a DLC.
Will your "Still scary?" series ever return?
WE NEED THIS.
I mean, you are basically looking at it. lol
@@JohnWolfe 🤓 But you didn't explicitly title it as "Still Scary", JOHN. 😉
@@JohnWolfe yeah John how are we gonna know if something is still scary if you don't explicitly say "hey guys it's John, yeah this one is still scary, anyways think critically!"
Or childhood cringe
You don’t even know how much I needed this right now, thanks
I love the perspective on the whistleblower DLC, the way they connected the two protagonist's points of view within the game as the story progresses for them both its extremely well done, especially for the whistleblower...
I love how casual Traeger is while 'operates' on people
This and Whistleblower are just absolutely phenomenal, shame the sequel is so poor.
What hurts the worst is that the sequel was set up to be amazing and then the ending just kills it.
i couldnt watch the sequel it was so boring after an hour or two guess i got too excited from the demo
have to try again tho
Outlast 2 was not a bad game, but man was it disappointing. The gameplay mechanics it introduced were cool but unfortunetely weren't utilized very well. And the level design was sooo linear. There weren't as many enemy stealth sections because the again most of the game was incredibly linear and because the enemy AI is so busted that is able to see and track you easier than the fucking mosquitos. Most of Outlast 2's encounters are mostly chases and they become old really, really fast.
Don't even get me started on the story...
I just wished they kept it in the same universe. I wanted to see how things progressed after the dlc, especially w the cliffhanger ending it had.
@@Isabella-vn3wg Well it is the same universe with tie-ins, but I see what you mean - you wanted a direct continuation
I've played Outlast too many times.
Insane was/is a freaking hell
Serious question. How do difficulties work in Outlast? Like there's no combat so what changes?
@@carltonhanks6679 The amount of batteries, and the damage you take
As an example, I remember that the fat guy (Chris Walker) kills you in two hits in Normal, however he'll insta-kill you in any other difficulty
Omg I'm so ready for this! It's gonna scare the hell out of me .
Thank you for editing your stream so we can watch it here on youtube!
This game was so good no cap
Incorrect
@@KALLIERSKAVEMOTHERFUCKA why you say that? It was pretty good for it's time
Outlast is a horror game that relies too heavily on shock factor to scare you. A good horror game should let you scare yourself, not the other way around.
@@KALLIERSKAVEMOTHERFUCKA that's what the second one was for to not just rely on it

Thank you for this video. I have finally watched Outlast. I don’t have the guts to play such a game even though I admire horror. I love your channel so much, it gives me an opportunity to enjoy horror games without putting myself through anxiety attacks.
I've been a subscriber ever since the original playthrough.
Seeing this video pop up in my notifications after not expecting to see any RUclips content from John= happy :)

Can I just say how much I appreciate the dynamic between John and us as his community with us constantly complaining and John roasting us back every chance he gets? 😂
I mean we're balancing the 'being kinda di*kish to each other, but not overdoing it' thing rather well, we're not being overly polite with each other (like a lot of other communities tend to be), but still tolerable i.m.o. and I think that's a really great way of dealing with each other.
Just feels so natural and honest to me, if you know what I mean 😁
(Thank you for providing that kind pf space for us, John 🙏)
Ay Outlast was the first playthrough I saw on this channel back during the fabled HarshlyCritical times. Good to see John playing it again.
9:42 this sounds like "I'm not like other girls" lmaooo love you John, you're really not like other streamers
I originally subbed when you played Outlast. I can't believe it's been this long already.
Same here, I found him through his playthrough when it was still like two episodes in. How time flies!
Mad respect you replaying your old classics.
This is great, I was actually ready to rewatch your old outlast playthrough.
To this day i still say “consume the flesh spice it well”

gotta love when john makes fun of chat lmao "could have avoided it!" this man is comedy.
Outlast is a legendary game. IMO it’s the best horror game out there and an absolutely insane ride from beginning to end, so happy to see people are still playing it and talking about it to this day
‘Run, hide or die’

I remember I had nightmares abt this game when I 1st watched you play it 😀
I think the found footage/video camera aspect of this game helps it hold up even as it gets older and older. You’re not distracted by thinking “damn this game looks old”. And of course the atmosphere, scares, chases, etc will be terrifying and iconic until the end of time.
1:49:05 "I made it almost 3 hours without yelling at chat, that's pretty good for me" 😂😂😂

Paying attention to the story! Yes! I love you!
I’m not gonna lie.... when John finished RE8 I was a little saddened! Because I was there every upload, it became something I looked forward to after work lol. Hope this hits the same!
Harrison Martin, that’s how I felt when he played the one with “Jimmy” in the hotel.
@@danaedwards9072 same!
Still a horror game that's actually scary without the need for cheap jump-scares. Remains a classic even until nowadays.
This is probably one of my favorite games to watch. Can’t wait to watch this!
Man, I missed this game. It was so influential, even though it was a little exploitative it feels like a comfy blanket lmao.
John doing the merchant impression and a body falling right after was perfect 😂 59:40

Ah, yes. Outlast. This was one of the first horror games I watched people play on youtube. I wasn't used to horror yet, so this game got me scared to walk in my house at night. It felt like Chris walker would attack me at any moment. 😅
I watched your 2013 playthrough years ago and I do NOT remember it being this scary!!! Omg I was freaked out watching this. So many of the jumpscares got to me. Glad you uploaded this to youtube thanks! It was fun to watch
I love that you played outlast again, this is exciting to watch.

10:16 after all these years.I've JUST realised that it was Miles who screamed when he saw the hanging headless body.It makes sense though. Some blood he saw was nothing but when he saw the body he s@@t himself.
A replay of Alien Isolation, and now this? I like where this is going :D
I loved the original playthrough of this game so much that I decided to buy it years ago when it was on sale cheap. Me and my bro played it together and managed about 20 minutes before our nerves became too fried to continue any further lol. I'm so excited to see John play it again, and to see how it holds up today (I can't believe it has been over 7 years...)
I was so excited to see this notification! I love watching people play Outlast, so this was the perfect thing to watch while working this evening. Thanks, John!
Full game. Not 6 fucking hours. Reasonable Length. Commentary so I won't get bored. Perfect.

Gosh, has it really been since 2013?? Time has been flying, didn't realize I'd been watching THAT long. Super stoked to watch this!
Watching this after just having played through Outlast 2 a few months back, this is just so much better than the sequel. It looks designed, and tight, and not cheap instakill-y
