"Because nobody cares about a few forgotten lunitics" is a line that haunts me to this day. That's the scariest thing about Outlast imo. It's not the runny hidey stuff, or the paranormal stuff, it's the bleak hopelessness of the suffering of a vulnerable population. The only thing keeping those people alive is a profit margin. It's terrifying because that part is realistic, it's happened before and could still be happening now and we wouldn't even know. Sad stuff really.

There are so few people that understand that that’s the point of the game. It highlights the very real experimentation done on vulnerable people in the 20th century and expounds upon it in order to give us a dire warning: stop ignoring these people. Their suffering and torment was only possible because the rest of the world decided to look away, and gave a megacorp the opportunity to strike.

@@bepis1305 I'm bad at this type of games so I watched this play through. Too bad the great story and its subtext was wasted on such a player. The type who thinks he's so damn smart. So the average streamer, basically.

    • @TiiAye
      @TiiAye 3 года назад +14

@@bepis1305 Yeah, that kind of sounds like a bad kotaku article, just seems like a stretch. Plus, the amount of times the story attempts to parallel that concept is hardly enough to be allegorical. I believe, and it is 100% within your rights to disagree with everything I say, that they were just trying to further drive the isolated aspect of the game. Which, by the way, if they really didn’t care why the hell would the government then send in a special task force to kill the protagonist. It just wouldn’t make sense to have that be a major arching theme, unless of course we chalk that up to slipshod writing.

Honestly after all this time what surprises me the most is-- I'd forgotten how irreverently edgy and 'funny' a lot of the writing is. (Whether it's actually funny is hit or miss for me, but like it's clearly supposed to be campy rather than serious.)
And no matter how accustomed we've gotten to the Outlast-inspired stuff that came after, one note I think a lot of them don't actually dare to imitate is that Outlast had this very immediate, uncomfortable undertone of sexual threat that I think a lot of hetero men are not used to being on the receiving end of. Even before Whistleblower and Eddie, stuff like the antagonists' nudity was deliberately supposed to be unnerving in that way. That's really my main takeaway from Outlast looking back, other than its obvious mechanical innovations at the time.

Hi, John. I don't know where to start but here I go.
Recently I noticed that you said on Twitter you might be reducing your focus on RUclips and that you prefer Twitch as the main platform.
Twitch is great and I am sure most people would agree. But there are some aspects on why me, as a viewer, still prefer RUclips as my main platform to watch videos especially yours.
For one, Twitch is a live-streaming platform and a lot of times my time zone doesn't let me catch your stream live.
I know that I can watch the recorded version of it on Twitch if I missed your stream, but somehow my internet (i.e. my ISP and the damned crappy internet) tends to suffer heavily on Twitch I don't even know why, while I can watch 1080p videos on RUclips just fine.
What I am gonna say is that I really really really hope that you would still post videos on RUclips, even if it's taken from your stream like this.
I love watching both your stream and videos, it's just that some conditions won't allow me to enjoy watching you on Twitch.
You are one of the only few RUclips channel that I still tune in to and keep on anticipating for every new video.
P.S. You once told us it's impossible for us to have watched your every single video, but I think I have watched about 80-85% of your videos at this point. Been watching your oooold stuff now every night xD

Less people would leave youtube if it was an enjoyable platform. John's reasons are his own but according to my friends who do stream to twitch, it's much easier to have a stable income. I understand having a harder time watching on twitch as I have difficulty watching in hd on the platform as well, but it's a far more enjoyable platform as well. You can tell how much more fun John has on his twitch and it's not like hes going to give up on youtube 100%

I think the line "How do you know you're not a patient?" is them saying "How do you know you're not infected too?"
As in, how do you know if this place hasn't gotten to you? Which is interesting because we see in his journey (SPOILERS) how he starts getting the side effects of the experiment after witnessing the wallrider. Craving the static like an itch - the patients you see in the beginning are watching static. Hearing whispers at increasing volume and beginning to "understand" them. Then of course he ends up (ENDING SPOILER) being a successful "variant" and becoming the host for the wallrider at the end.

A walking sim is a "game" where you walk and things happen automatically. The player's input has little to no consequence to the gameplay.
A lot of horror games have too much walking (e.g. Slenderman), but the simple fact that something chases you and you can either escape it or die a bunch saves it from being a walking sim.
Same if there are meaningful puzzles etc.

I managed to beat the game on the second hardest difficulty (Nightmare) fairly easily. 2 is significantly harder though.

Outlast 2 was not a bad game, but man was it disappointing. The gameplay mechanics it introduced were cool but unfortunetely weren't utilized very well. And the level design was sooo linear. There weren't as many enemy stealth sections because the again most of the game was incredibly linear and because the enemy AI is so busted that is able to see and track you easier than the fucking mosquitos. Most of Outlast 2's encounters are mostly chases and they become old really, really fast.
Don't even get me started on the story...

I mean the chase scenes are scary, but the psychological aspect of so many horrors games is so played out and misrepresented to begin with. It's just boring. • @TiiAye

@@27Binx72 I feel as though people misunderstand the term psychological horror. It feels like a catch all term for anything related to mental illness, but often overlook that the point is really to fuck with the player’s brain. Killing a monster, but it’s “in your mind” isn’t actually Psychological horror it’s just regular horror with a sign that says Psychological on it. The best games put both of these elements together in order to trick the player into confusing when something is real and fake. Think shadows in the backdrop making the player uneasy as the haplessly try to determine which is benign and which is potentially lethal.
