@Akny86 Absolutely. Since I made this comment I have actually learned that Berry started out as a guitar player, which is likely why his approach to bass is very melodic and daring. He was unafraid to take risks that other bassists weren't, and he played the instrument using his knowledge of regular guitar as his guide. That's why he will go on long melodic runs with the guitars and compliment them so well, plus whenever the song needs it, he definitely can get down in the nitty gritty of bass playing and totally groove in a rhythm position as well. He was a very well-rounded player, and his unique approach really put him over the top of other bassists in that time in my opinion. In many of the old recordings of ABB playing live back in the day, Berry frequently blows my mind pretty much as often as Dickey and Duane ever did.
@Akny86 That's awesome, I don't think I have ever seen this before so thanks for sharing! And man, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the absolute crazy power of Butch and Jaimoe wailing away with him. Talk about a freight train barreling down the tracks! I'd give a lot to be able to go back in time and hear the original Allman Bros live in person. I bet the power of that group playing right in front of you was mind bogglingly incredible.
@Akny86 Well, I play guitar and sing in a southern rock jam band and we love to jam out on Allman songs. You can't come anywhere close to that power level unless you have those two drummers and all those guitar and organ amps sitting in their sweet spots, aka pretty loud. We certainly do try to inject allman flavored riffs and jams into our playing (along with Grateful Dead stuff too), so we are trying our best to keep it alive over here lol.
The actual fact that Dickie Betts wrote such an amazing piece of music is drunkenly staggering. How. Thee. Fuck did he even piece all that together. Genius.
This transcription and your playing are absolutely incredible! The accuracy is astounding. You have literally created a situation where it’s like having Barry Oakley in the room with us playing and explaining his epic contribution to to Elizabeth Reed. BRAVO!
UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE! I still think the Fillmore album is one of the best ever made, and this has to be my favorite song. You're right- Berry was a phenomenal bassist, and I've never see his name on any 'best of the best' lists. The crescendos he did on this piece still give me goosebumps. And I cannot believe you've done the work to chart this song out- THANK YOU! This is one song I need to learn, start to finish.
Excellent cover. One thing I would say to bass players who want to learn the Allman Brothers, they never played this (and 99% of their other songs) the same twice. Listen to all the different versions with Berry. Some nights Berry would play right up front with Duane and Dickey or lay back with Gregg or lock in with Butch and Jaimoe. He had the best part in the band.
Dude!! Amazing transcription AND playing. That must of taken you a while. You're right. I don't think Berry got the respect he deserved. He had such great lines and fills. I've spent the last 3 days learning this. I'm ready to take it out and play it tonight and I am confident I'm gonna kick ass thanks to you. PEACE!
Thank you Johnny! Yes, this transcription took me a good week! I kind of had a head start though as I did transcribe the basic riffs and grooves years ago. Love Berry's lines so much and will definitely be getting more up here soon!
I heard a band do this live this past weekend, and the bass player got it right! Such a complex song; this inspired me to learn it. I agree wholeheartedly that Berry Oakley is underappreciated. I always have to work on any Allman Bros song that he played on. He was fast and very creative. Thanks for the visual and the tabs.
Hey Jason, that's an awsome bass tutorial. You are an amazing player. Thanks for the TABS. I'm gonna start by learning the movements part-by-part around 50 reps each before I should get it close to the real thing, and then sew them up together, and then another 50 reps. That should keep me busy for another 3 months, I reckon. Thanks for all your work. 😊
From one bass player to another you did justice to my all time favorite band. I am truly amazed at your playing ability! I hope to se more in the future. The tab is definitely a bonus. Thanks man.
Nice playing, man really nice...and the sound quality of the live album was also clear, strong and present. Nice work with all the sound, really enjoyed it, and will return.....
He was one of my earliest influences. I never nailed this song the way you have here (not even close). Just incredible work. Inspires me to go back and shed this.
Thank you. I have been playing ABB music since the early 70s. Your transcription is so very cool. You have confirmed some of the things I have been playing but have opened the door to a much deeper understanding of the part. I just spent an hour on 16 measures. lol
Incredible - I learned a lot by taking sections and watching for patterns. How BO works that Dorian stuff is crazy. I don't have the pure stamina to keep going for 10+ minutes, but being able to stop and watch the movement, etc. you are mapping out is so very much appreciated!
I remember reading that when forming his group Duane insisted that Berry play the bass. He was actually a guitarist first. They didn't need another guitarist..they needed a bass player. He was so good on bass because of his ability on guitar...love his trademark sound.
Thank you, Jason!! I just purchased your transcription. Great job with the transcription!! This will be fun to play with my band. P.S. If you have a chart with just the notation, no tabs, I will buy it from you, as well!
Jason, have you made a bass cover like this one for Hot 'Lanta (Fillmore East version)? If not, would sure love to see one. To me, that's some of the most complex bass playing Berry did.
Great Job. You have it down. Berry Oakley was THE man! I picked it up years ago, starting again but you have closest to original. I had a few parts off. Just got into zone and went with it. Again great job.
I was messing with this a bit, had it in my favorites, and all, but I give up, LOL, I just don;t have the musical head to tackle this. I'm going back to Statesboro Blues and Ramblin' Man !!! You still get yer thumbs up, though !
God damn, man, watched it a second time and that is clean. Absolutely well done! Being someone who is totally well taught I would be interested to know if you taught yourself as well, if you've had teachers and how long you've played. Your videos have been a massive help in getting me to play better to great songs like these!
Of course another workout:) Nice job transcribing. Although this is one sad bluesy tune, it's one of my favorites. I started learning this version a few year ago and somehow it got away from me getting busy with other stuff. I'll have to get back to it...when summer winds down and I'm indoors more:) You are so spot on with your covers, thanks for all the time spent producing such great educational vids!
@@BasstabsbyJason Hey, this is the most awesome bass channel on RUclips... thanks so much... hey, any chance you could do one on Carl Radle's bass work on Derek & the Dominos "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad' ??
Hey Jason- I've looked for you on Patreon and have had no luck, though sometimes I'm not the sharpest marble in the bag. Can you point me in the right direction so I can download some of your tabs? Thanks man.... again... EXCELLENT PLAYING!
What kind of jazz bass is that? I’ve always wondered and I just have never asked! I believe you no longer own that bass for this is quite an old video, just wondering!
I did not like the song when first hearing, and that's usually a good thing. Good music can sometimes take time to appreciate. But have grown to love this one ... and Berry's beautiful playing as well. Good job on the cover too-thanks for posting.
Probably the single most underrated bass player ever!! Great job to you as well!
Agreed!
Berry was an absolute monster on bass. I can't recall another bassist around that time period who played like he did. You nailed it man, nice job!

I was at the Fillmore East in 71 for this concert what an amazing band and what an amazing place, saw so many great concerts there.
What was your impression of the show that night as you walked out onto second avenue?

Thanks, that is awesome. Very touching , got me a bit emotional. Thank you.
Amazing highlight of the backbone of this classic masterpiece.

Over 20 years ago I heard this for the first time. I was so taken by it I almost ditched the truck. It’s been my fav song from that point on.

a very jazzy composition, could be a Chick Corea sound. Or any of the future jazz-rock fusion works...
The composition is an hommage to John Coltrane, very much admired by the ABB.
