he's great no doubt, but the Soulive dude himself is no slouch chopswise, more dynamic and equally interesting. And, of course, Sco is one of a kind, unmatchable.
Scofield found that knob and turned it up to 11. Huge props for structuring his solo around blues licks and grooves when he could have just shredded modal jazz scales all night long.
Daniel Donato. Has a good 50 minute set from Denver on YT. Bunch of young dudes doing their own take of 60’s psyche country. Look him up. Out of Nashville. Kid plays cosmic country and can play some of the cleanest fast licks. He’s like Clarence White with some Garcia, Dickie and Duane thrown in there. Personally I find Marcus King and Gary Clark overrated, but it’s mainly because I’ve gotten tired of electric blues the past couple years. Delta blues rules all blues anyways… lol
I sat front row at a small theater maybe 5 years ago or so and watched him play from about 5 feet away. His view the whole show was my slack jawed dumbass. Went home and stayed up all night trying riffs I watched him play. Kids a fucking prodigy. For $30 it was the best bang for my buck since Gary Clark Jr. played 6th street. I just so happened while on vacation to walk in to a bar he was playing. The two luckiest shows I’ll ever catch. Everything’s right in this world so long these boys carry the torch lol.
Tim Hawthorne: thanks for reminding of this tunes great lineage. Who'd a thunk that the self-described southern country boy (DB) would write something way back in the Duane days of the ABB that is a timeless treasure for guitarists of all ages?
Oh, that was Tim, NOT John - well I'll stick with the comment anyway - Duane (and now Brother Gregg) was/were smiling down on The Brooklyn Bowl the night of June 15th, in the year of our Crazy Guitar Solo Lord 2017!
@@Zonydeep You’re joking mate, you’re letting sentiment and nostalgia get in the way. Marcus has a far superior feel and technique to Duane. The asset test is, I could play everything that Duane could do but wouldn’t even know where to start with Marcus, his brain is like a computer and his jazz education sends him to a different world altogether from the everyday blues player.
@@liamnaughton9505totally agree...absolutely love the guitarist's from the 70s etc...Duanne, Clapton, Hendrix etc...BUT ...in all honesty some of the guitarists in the last ten years... Three amazing guitar solos! I’m glad Scofield went last because no matter what came before in a song, he’s always going to take it somewhere else. After the super smooth phrasing and atonal ideas in the first two solos, he starts with his signature long, snaky phrases, enters Jeff Beck territory, and then has some fun with vowel sounds on the wah. Always funky and unpredictable, Scofield is a master who keeps getting better.
People always gush over the various guest guitarists in these Soulive videos, and with good reason. They're all incredible. How about some love for Eric, though?! He's a monster!
Neil Evans is playing keyboard bass lines FYI. You’re watching and listening to some of the finest musicians anywhere! It’s not a competition, but style appreciation and personal preferences. From someone who’s seen the ABB 50+ times, this is a great version of Lizzie Reed!
I remember seeing Soulive in Orlando at the social years ago, those guys tore up the place. Three generations of great guitarist right here, this how you play melodic with other guitarist, in sync and in harmony and each guy knows how to step out and rip it up and when to pull back.
Richard Busson: agree, big time. Scofield is first and foremost a max guitarist going all the way back to Miles. The incredible drummer is a freakin metronome that keeps all these guys absolutely on point. They are all able to do what they do best. And Liz Reed swings like nobody's business. Dickie said he wrote this tune so that fine musicians could stretch out, and that's what they do here. Btw, I like Marcus ok. I'm probably going to make waves here claiming Billy Strings is truly where it's at when praising the young'uns who are keeping the spark alive - and he's from Michigan out of bluegrass. MAJESTIC musical moment when Alan Evans confuses the finale but still succeeds to manage the shit out of it and make it sound friggin' magical as if it was written like this! ( also throwing a smile at Eric like " Yeah I know it almost happened, but we delivered!" ). Made my day :D

Like how he had a quote from Bonham's "Bonzo's Last Stand" in his solo section.
I felt scofields part was where it went another place and I actually was dancing around the kitchen, cooking dinner. Marvellous.
Marcus King.... shines in any group.
One of my personal "discoveries" in the past two years. Man, how could I not realize him earlier.

Marcus representing the South on this one in a way that would make the Brothers proud
Would make Duane and Dicky, Derek Trucks very proud!
