Dylan Whitaker I would say yes to this, but then the Roman infantry would get slaughtered in both the open and in the woods since barbarians would still have such a good charge bonus
Very true. I would say just make their charge worse in open ground but that wouldn't make sense and then it would just make barbarians useless in an open ground map. I wonder if CA could maybe find a way to balance this they are smart people! Oh and is there any way I can add you to steam?
Iceni is better than you think Heir! Man, I even won a tournament battle with them, kind of decisively at that! I'll tell you my trick, but shhh don't tell anyone! :P First of all, I get a core of 2 Heroic and 3 Chosen. Then I bring 2 Sword Band as flank. 2 Painted Warriors in the second line. (mostly to deal with cheap flank unit, and they extremely good at that thx to fear) 1 Druidic between the Painted. (they are usefull when kept in reserve, it make units stay longer in late game) 3 Briton Slingers (Slightly better than other barb slingers, alway usefull) Only 2 Vet Riders (Since Iceni doesn't have good cav, I don't bring many) Since low on cav, need to protect backlines with 4 Levy Freeman. (The most usefull unit of the game) And finaly, the key unit that make it all work so well in a barb brawl matchup ......... 2 Chariots! Unlike their scythed brothers, I don't use them for steamroll all the infantry lines (they're really not able to anyway) I use them as ''Yolo Barb Charge Breaker''! Just send them 2 ranks deep in the core of your opponent and follow up with your own core. This is absolutly devastating since you get huge charge into unbraced and ''low health'' unit that is not counter charging. The Painted Warrior's fear effect help to rout them even faster and the chariots (if still alive) may either attack the core in the rear to rout it even faster or destroy skirmishers. Well, if you have read this long comment, try it out and tell me what you think! (This build is intended for barb brawl)
Perhaps CA should exempt barbarians from charge speed penalties in forested areas, especially considering that historically these peoples fought guerilla style warfare in wooded areas (such as at Teutoburg Forest). At the very least give them a stat buff when fighting in the woods, or other infantry (ie. Romans) a debuff in wooded areas. What do you guys think?
To be fair I once guerilla deployed with ambushers and ran a guy's elephants amok all over his army, and then killed his giant ballista before he intercepted them with cav
Can I ask what program you use to get the painting effects on the screen? You seem to be doing it in real time? Does anyone know? I'd love to use it for my videos.
+Jeff McArthur There is no program, it's in the game. The red, blue and green icons above the map, are what you use to make the paint effects. Just click whichever you want to use.
The General and Bodyguard (seriously, what kind of body actually needs 29 bodyguards?) has 20 more armour than the Legatus though less melee defense I think.
Painted Ones are the Woad Warriors, in the historical context as Woad is a type of blue paint. Though the painted ones don't deliver like the Woad Warriors did.
Saw in Maximus's Flash Tournament someone who got the Iceni and used their chariots quite well, so I wouldn't write them off too fast. They can trample just the same as scythed chariots (not that it makes sense) if players use it right.
Around 10: 04. Just watching these videos, I really welcome that they got rid of those 1v1 duels as the main mode of combat. Look at that charge. Where you'd expect the units to use their formation advantage and start enveloping that Roman unit, they just stand there, their AI trying to figure out how to lock on for 1v1 duels. Then a few seconds later, you can see units teleporting around to try and lock into those animations. I honestly can't understand why people defend the duel/executions when they break how the game works THAT much.
Im pretty sure that chosen sword can beat thorax swords on the charge. and a vet riders need a armor buff and the sword band need to be like the Celt warrior.
I don't know...I got over 300 kills with Briton chariots today in a multiplayer battle. You just need to save them for when you get flank control. Once they're behind, they can crush people. Plus they come in a larger unit size and are way cheaper than scythed chariots. And they can throw flaming javelins. Also, you don't put painted ones in your main line. You leave them in the reserve to push them in when a hole is made to take advantage of their bonus vs infantry. Also today, I used painted ones to take out the lion's share of a sword master unit. They routed it and went on with more than half their men left. Also, that blue face paint IS woad. That's what it's called. They're all kinda woad warriors haha.
Note he said useless in serious online play. He's basically saying that against people that know how to deal with chariots they have no use. Against me? They'd be perfectly ok, I'm terrible in online battles, just note his context
Agreed , i've never lost with Iceni , minimum of 200 kills every online battle with 1 chariot unit & thats vs known clan folk or folk from the top 10. there main line infantry are beast as well if you dont use them like other factions.Just gotta learn how to use the Iceni properly.
I think for them to be of real value they need to kill high armor units, also there are so many javelins on the field now days I find it to hard to use the chariots.
well, they do work great when charging an unbraced formation. They can cut right through it. And yeah there are a lot of javelins around, but there aren't a lot of flaming javelins. What's great is they can get behind a powerful infantry unit, give it the flaming missile morale debuff, and then charge it in wedge (scythed chariots don't get wedge). You might be surprised at what they can do. The thing is you just need to have a plan for how you're going to use them. And really, they only cost 900 talents. You don't need nearly as many kills to make them cost effective as with scythed chariots.
The 'Woad warrior's' were there but you didnt use them. 'Painted ones' wore blue said paint instead of armour , and their mushroom brew gave them the frenzy ability lol!
Maybe they will bring the "woads" back with Atilla?! Try one with Colchis or pergamon, I actually enjoy playing as Colchis but they have a lot of weaknesses
Heir give those iceni chariots a try! They are pretty nice if they are used properly, and mainly against low armor units.. not as powerful as schyted chariots, but actually not that bad
I would like to see Heir use Syracuse, cause I love Syracuse even if I haven't play Rome 2 in a while it's still nice to be entertained by the game played by better players than me :3
One thing I have noticed is players not realizing their cavalry are like aircraft; if you establish air superiority you can bomb with impunity, same with cav charges. I've always kept all of my cavalry together as long as mine aren't weaker. Since Shogun2 the games have tried to keep cav balanced by making some good against cav and others against infantry. I used to mass Equites or Squires and get Concerned By Numbers and surround on units to break them when they should win.
Sgtsmith try this. have a front line of spartan hoplties with some royal spartans and heroes of spartans mixed in. then have a second line of cheap helot archers then have a 3rd line protecting your back with periokoi hoplites. works everytime.
i dont think Pergamon is the worst, they have stable cav and eltie cav, and picked pletast are just great. The only real problem they have is the lack of a really good long range unit and more powerful sword unit is needed.
Heir I think the Ardiaei would be good for underdog week, their Illyrian Nobel Hoplites and Illyrian Marines are good units but their piss poor cav and lack of archers really make them an underdog faction.
I miss Head Hunters from Rome I but i love Druids too good :) Iceni and Suebi are best from Barbarian Factions :) and with Legendary difficulty campaign excelent game :3
Iceni are totally viable faction. Chosen swords are very heavy inf (heavier then most barb mid sword) and they are comparable or better then averni chosen swords. Elite swords are cheaper and they have best slings of all barbarians. Also, scare swordsmen are totally viable.
The Chosen Sword band and the britton slingers are the only good units for The Icenii. Their horses and all other units loose to other celtic units of the same price :/
HeirofCarthage heir for ardei try putting chevrons on axe warriors and illyrian levies. they will kill very quickly and your opponent won't be expecting it. some guy did this to me. his silver chevron axe warriors and illyrian levies killed my thorax hoplites and i was like wtf.
Play as a greek( colonie) most of them are not good, so athens, sparta, syracuse, and the colonies Or if you want a real imposible challenge choos a nomad
Would be cool if Barbarians charge were not affected by woods.
They should get a bonus. That's where they were known to fight from.
Dylan Whitaker Or maybe they shouldn't get the movement penalty in the woods?
Agreed, I don't think barbarian units should suffer a speed decrease in the woods

I loved the head hurlers in Rome 1. They were hilarious.
Yea they were crazy and would rip up Roman Legionaries with impunity.
HeirofCarthage rip them urban cohorts to shreds
hahaha 14:48 that guy really flew
Love me some Iceni! I would also like to see you play Tylis, Cimmeria, or Colchis!
Tylis is good, cimmeria has the best archers in the game and colchis is decent.Note, tylis is my favorite faction
Tylis is quite strong indeed. Tribal warriors with broken shield wall are very hard to get rid of.
Loved this video, quite liking the underdog matches (and the jokes! :P). Great fun to watch.
Also i think Sparta is underrated.
Thanks Heir!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I am sure Sparta will make an appearance
To be fair I once guerilla deployed with ambushers and ran a guy's elephants amok all over his army, and then killed his giant ballista before he intercepted them with cav
Good plays; I find the unit roster of Iceni to be truly lacking, but you managed to make it work. Nice job!
It does seem weak to me as well.
Sweet battle I think it would be cool if you did a cinematic version
And a rear charge by the sword band into the spear gladiatrices...
You are not the only one who can think of lame jokes. :3
lol
Can I ask what program you use to get the painting effects on the screen? You seem to be doing it in real time? Does anyone know? I'd love to use it for my videos.
+Jeff McArthur There is no program, it's in the game. The red, blue and green icons above the map, are what you use to make the paint effects. Just click whichever you want to use.
If u have not found out yet, its a feature both when you play the battle, and when you watch the replay
I wish you could play with the Etruscan League with their Italian Noble Cavalry having 79 base melee attack
Yeah, the barbs should have like a bonus when fighting in woods ability.
The General and Bodyguard (seriously, what kind of body actually needs 29 bodyguards?) has 20 more armour than the Legatus though less melee defense I think.
Yea i don't see it ever making much of a difference...armor could help against missiles I guess though
I will try to find that.
Pergamon next please!
Woad warriors were replaced with Painted Ones. I do miss the old unit though.
Yea in Rome 1 they had the fast moving trait and were very handy
Brilliant battle lol. The ICENI can win a fight. It's good to see. I loose everytime I play them.
Yea they are pretty gimpy compared to the mainline factions
14:48 Flying Iceni swordsman ahaha :')
Around 10: 04. Just watching these videos, I really welcome that they got rid of those 1v1 duels as the main mode of combat. Look at that charge. Still waiting for conquest of Britannia dlc
Dammit Jon..
It would have been fun I think
HeirofCarthage is it ruled out? orrr.. cause I was kinda hoping to see it still
CA is actually based in england if im not mistaken so i thought forsure there would be one. but iguess there more intrested in atilla
I'd rather see the Conquest of England in 1066 by William of Normandy.
Im pretty sure that chosen sword can beat thorax swords on the charge. and a vet riders need a armor buff and the sword band need to be like the Celt warrior.
They can. They do ok vs formation attack infantry due to charge, but they get beaten down by other similar priced barbarian units
which means i will normal use then against a greek faction because i know my army base will be better then theirs
I don't know...I got over 300 kills with Briton chariots today in a multiplayer battle. You just need to save them for when you get flank control. Once they're behind, they can crush people. RavenHeadInn The chariots have low mass, I am not sure how you are managing to use them against heavy infantry.
Maybe Pergamon? Never seen you play as them before.
I have used them, and indeed they suck and will likely make an appearance this week
I'll search your online battles see what I can find
can you do a huge siege battle
8:01 illuminati confirmed
lol
Aren't painted ones Woad Warriors, just with a different name?
This woods in this map looks pretty similar to where the one in GoT. lol
Maybe they will bring the "woads" back with Atilla?! Try one with Colchis or pergamon, I actually enjoy playing as Colchis but they have a lot of weaknesses
Just saying, the voice settings you have in this video are sounding really good
Thanks, I thought they sounded better this time as well.
HOW did you not make a divorce joke at 10:50. HOW.
+Ben Albee coz they signed prenup upon said "engagement".
Painted Ones are the Woad Warrior replacement
The Woad Warriors are in the form of the Painted Ones, which aren't very useful.
Heir give those iceni chariots a try! They are pretty nice if they are used properly, and mainly against low armor units.. not as powerful as schyted chariots, but actually not that bad
I love them in campaign. I haven't once seen them do much in an online battle.
I would like to see Heir use Syracuse, cause I love Syracuse even if I haven't play Rome 2 in a while it's still nice to be entertained by the game played by better players than me :3
Syracuse is nice but i'm pissed cause they're exactly like athens
syracuse are really damn good. i almost never lose with them
I will see if I can fit them in, though I think Sparta is worse off since syracuse has swords and shock cav
Also I like cav for screening and anything that requires quick movement on the field
14:46: " I'm out of here D: "
im pretty sure painted ones are the equivalent of woad warriors
Sparta V whoever they're worse-off against? Which would probably be Rome? etc.
I've beaten Rome many times with Sparta. A player who knows how to use Rome to their advantage can win but Sparta can usually do it if used correctly.
Sparta vs any sword heavy faction is tough indeed
Sgtsmith try this. have a front line of spartan hoplties with some royal spartans and heroes of spartans mixed in. then have a second line of cheap helot archers then have a 3rd line protecting your back with periokoi hoplites. works everytime.
you should use the ardiaei the king of the underdogs, do a noble hoplite rush with illyran marines to back them up with their javs abilities.
They aren't the worst faction actually. I think that falls to Pergamon
i dont think Pergamon is the worst, they have stable cav and eltie cav, and picked pletast are just great. The only real problem they have is the lack of a really good long range unit and more powerful sword unit is needed.
HeirofCarthage Surely not? I thought Pergamon is an ok faction?
I would consider Colchis to be a pretty serious underdog.
They aren't great, but I think Pergamon is much worse off
You should talk to CA so they really call the shieldwall "shield-chaos" and maybe give it a buff on missile damage to make it even more magical :D
Flaming javelins, hex bearers, camels, and elephants all rear charging.
lol with Ariovistus fast charge FTW
Yep hahahaha
14:45.. he got knocked up by divine powers
Heir I think the Ardiaei would be good for underdog week, their Illyrian Nobel Hoplites and Illyrian Marines are good units but their piss poor cav and lack of archers really make them an underdog faction.
"yeah..shield ""wall"" slash shield CHAOS but whatever.." xD
Yea it is pretty ludicrous
14:48 LOL Paranormal Rektivity
I miss Head Hunters from Rome I but i love Druids too good :) Iceni and Suebi are best from Barbarian Factions :) and with Legendary difficulty campaign excelent game :3
Iceni are totally viable faction. Chosen swords are very heavy inf (heavier then most barb mid sword) and they are comparable or better then averni chosen swords. Elite swords are cheaper and they have best slings of all barbarians. Also, scare swordsmen are totally viable.
Why do you change your steam name everyday? I just noticed this
I beat the seleuicsd with the iceni and the seleucids even had chariots
The Chosen Sword band and the britton slingers are the only good units for The Icenii. Their horses and all other units loose to other celtic units of the same price :/
The chosen swords lose as well. Their slingers are ok, but hard to get enough time to use them to make a difference with them.
You want a underdog faction to use? Play as the biggest underdogs in the game the Ardiaei.
I am sure I will use them, but I think Pergamon is even worse
I don't know those picked peltast are fantastic.
Luuesitani pls
also thx for all the bad jokes
lol I will see if I can work them in
HeirofCarthage thx :)
STAR TREK JOKE. YAAAAASSSSS
Keep those jokes running! :)
My eyes I'm going blind!
Thats not good
general and body guard and legitus are both pretty bad but the G&B is slightly better
play as Colchis
lol I think Pergamon is much worse off than them
play Egypt plz
I vote for pergamon i realy like there pelta's :D
I like underdog week heh. Much more interesting.
Sparta!!!
Pergamon :D
*Iceni Master-race*
ARDIEAI ARDIEAI ARDIEAI
You should publish a book called "Lame jokes with heir" and make some money off of it :D
lol my lame jokes might cost me money from people suing for pain and suffering
Use Massilia!
Ardiaei
Ardiaei Ardiaei Ardiaei
I am sure they will be making an appearance soon
royal scytia
Yea I was thinking either them or Massagetae
Getae
They are a decent faction I thought, but not a power faction I guess
Play ardiei
They are coming soon I am sure
HeirofCarthage heir for ardei try putting chevrons on axe warriors and illyrian levies. they will kill very quickly and your opponent won't be expecting it. some guy did this to me. his silver chevron axe warriors and illyrian levies killed my thorax hoplites and i was like wtf.
Ardiaei
Day 551: Heir is still making Bad jokes
And likely on into eternity
Play as a greek( colonie) most of them are not good, so athens, sparta, syracuse, and the colonies
Or if you want a real imposible challenge choos a nomad
If you think they're not good you're probably shit
I think Sparta definitely qualifies as a weak faction in the current state of the game.
HeirofCarthage Why? I don´t argue with you. But I played almost all my battles with Sparta and won.
The lameness is real. :p
ILLUMINATI
Why do you say crap all the time
What an annoying commentator
