Bannerlord, Largest Siege I've ever faced with our "300" Spartans, Volume XII

  • Heya friends, we're continuing with this series due to the constant requests and we take our war-hardened band of high level companions and family members(40+ strong!), and challenge foes in a narrow valley, somewhat similar perhaps to what the Spartans faced 2500 years ago against the Persians... How far can we push these 'Spartans' in Bannerlord? Soon we'll see!
Episode 22 as these continue to be content you guys love. It's getting harder and harder, but I know you guys would expect nothing less. ONWARD SPARTANS, TO BATTLE AND GLORY!!
    What prompted this series?
I get asked a lot in my campaign just how strong a small army can be in Bannerlord. So in this episode we take a fantasy trip into another world and time, taking a small breather from my death-match campaign to explore the potential of how strong a hand-picked army of 300 men in Bannerlord can be. This series will show ever-increasingly difficult challenges as I wander the map with my own "Spartans", deploying elite troops into advanced tactics in search of Glory. With some 45 companions and family members, many who are over level 40, we shake our shields and howl our war cries as the enemy closes in.... Enjoy!
Our entire channel is dedicated to helping players improve their field command and if that's your desire, or just want to see huge, dramatic battles, you've come to the right place.
Please comment, like and subscribe if you're interested in more of my ultra-late-game campaign, that may end up ending in utter despair, but that's the challenge of it. Any challenge where success is assured is no challenge at all.
My campaign is an extremely late-game campaign where I am resolved to give no peace to these scum Kingdoms attacking me - seven of the eight have been at war for years, with only Sturgia at a neutral stance. My family of warriors is now large though and with what remaining strength and valor we can must, we stand against the map of Calradia.
Join me on this adventure if you like huge battles, the use of advanced tactical maneuvers and intense Bannerlord gameplay, and subscribe to my channel if you want to follow along. This campaign is very lightly modded:
For most of this "300" series, I use four mods:
Lord Retinue Uptier(Makes the enemy forces stronger, much less peasants and lower ranked troops)
    www.nexusmods....
Improved AI Troops(Also makes enemy lords and their armies tougher by giving them a higher daily xp rate. This means you'll routinely face armies with HUGE numbers of the highest tier units, sometimes four or five times the normal amount in vanilla Bannerlord): www.nexusmods....
Death for all: This mod allows you to set the rate at which nobles die more often. I want both a harder challenging late-game but also a more realistic game. If you're cut down with a massive aserai two-handed axe, you shouldn't just be injured 99.9% of the time. It's a very customizable mod so you can just a little more death or set the death rate so high you get several deaths every battle. The number I often like is '10', some deaths but not a massacre of nobles...
    www.nexusmods....
I also use the Dismemberment Plus Mod: It's highly customizable and works seamlessly with the new beta(and versions back to 1.28). I thoroughly recommend it if you enjoy carnage!:
    steamcommunity...
I've also used Realistic Battle Mod in the past and highly recommend it for Ai and battle realism BUT I find the pace too slow for my taste and the AI is actually rather predictable after a half dozen battles. Still I wanted to put a plug in for it here, it's a GREAT mod and highly configurable. www.nexusmods....
Much of the music and inspiration for this and other videos in the channel are inspired by Epic History TV - probably THE best channel on youtube(and the internet for that matter) covering the Napoleonic wars. With amazing work Epic History TV takes you through the dramatic and incredibly story of Napoleon covering all of his most famous battles. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Heya fellas, this video was from a siege about two months ago(part of the "300" series), and I didn't want it to be out of chronological order. Some of the "300" battles I've chosen to fight more than once because of their difficulty, but also Epic nature. Believe it or not some of the Sieges to come are BIGGER and more gnarly than this, so hope you enjoyed it!

    TE-"I've never done a battle of 4000 vs 300."
Proceeds to go up against even more insane odds and win, lose, or draw, just put on an absolute class on how to do this type of battle.
Impressive as always. Watching you got me to pick up Bannerlord again. I've always just used basic tactics and couldn't get into the game too much. Now I'm branching out, using more tactics and different types of units, and I'm finding I'm losing a lot less people which means my army really starts to get some elite troops and I can really take on more armies than before. Prior to watching you I wouldn't touch an army I didn't outnumber. They'd crush me with their elite troops. Since picking it back up, while I'm not on your level or anywhere near, I did take on 553 with an army of 225 and won. Being able to take on battles like that makes the game so much more rewarding and fun. So thanks for the inspiration!

What helps if you're on low HP but know that ally AI won't cut it, just reload your range weapons at the arrow barrels and hunt down most armored units from a distance to give your AI better chances.
Furthermore I understand that you run around in order to keep the situational awareness, but once things "calmed down" It's worth to man the ballista and start mowing down the incoming enemy reinforcements.
Actually placing the ballista at the gate house might help a lot since you'll still see and command your forces easily.
Learned a lot from you today! Thank you!

For me, the appeal of a great defence is the story of an overwhelming and awesome enemy being held in check by the sheer will to fight (and smart tactics) of the defenders. Read David Gemmell's "Legend" for an epic example if you want a good fantasy genre story with all these aspects.

never underestimate the effectiveness of sturgian heroic line breakers in a siege, form them in square, and when the gates busted have them stand in the gate and they will take 50 enemies out for every one of them lost with a good captain
my last vanilla campaign, around midgame (getting my first fief), my sturgian heroic line breakers were swinging their axes at super speeds, and it would take roughly 3-4 hits to break a high tier units shield, 1 hit for low tier units, easily able to deal with any enemy that tried to get through the gates, the javelins being thrown over their heads helped

Hey dude, your bannerlord stuff is sick. I'm mainly known for being an Elden Ring invader, but I'm a huge medieval nerd and I cannot stop playing games like Bannerlord and Chivarly 2. I plan to branch out to those games on my channel, although it is a risky move.
I have always really enjoyed the tactics aspect of bannerlord, mainly for role playing game reasons. It is cool to win impossible battles with your own wit. I destroyed 1200 Sturgians with 400 Legionaries, Sharpshooters, and Banner Knights yesterday. Nothing quite like that feeling.
And yes you are right, seiges do hit different for some reason. Not sure why. My favorite is the Watchers on the Wall from Game of Thrones. It isn't a traditional siege due to the 600 foot high ice wall, but it is close enough.

Awesome. You don't panic and you make good tactical decisions. I like using fians and usually my infantry is in square formation, if you put them in front usually the enemy that is much more numerous will surround them and then the fians will pick them easily shooting at their backs. I was emulating napoleonic wars tactics in open fields to stop cavalry charges, but it turned out useful against infantry as well.

i always try to knock down the towers and battering ram first. That makes it easier to herd the enemy where i want them to be and cuts down on the breaching locations. A coulda, shoulda, woulda moment for sure. But the battle lasted longer than i expected, a costly win for the enemy.

the spartans actually had a few thousand experienced and well trained soldiers that were guarding a small area which stopped the persian army from advancing deeper into greece, the spartans initially devastated the Persians up until the Persian army flanked the spartan army by going through the mountain that was next to the battle field which then made majority of the spartan soldiers retreat while leonidas and his 300 men stayed

Just a tip if the enemy starts the attack with a siege tower it’s a good idea to destroy it that way the enemy has one less wall they can attack from allowing you to focus your troops in other key areas

the moment you could get chance to kill the ram would be game over for the siege, you could just farm them on the ladders with some high tier troops .. and some archers from the sides

  • @Ihashappiness
    @Ihashappiness Месяц назад

This was really eye opening on defense tactics. I’m definitely going to put more archer forces on the ground for uphill battles like this. Was there a reason you didn’t prioritize taking out their siege engines? I know getting as many elite enemy kills as possible was mentioned, but would taking out the Ram have helped holding out longer? This was awesome to watch, thanks!

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  Месяц назад

Sometimes it's not practical to take out their siege, sometimes that gamble costs you everything and sometimes I don't take out the ram to make the siege more epic/harder.

In this campaign, with war against ALL eight Kingdoms, we only have 2-3 cities and 2-3 castles, so the enemy has only a few targets to send all of their forces. If's happening more and more and some of the battles coming(soon) have well OVER 5,000 enemy troops...

never tried figuring out the mechanics behind commanding armies of melee units, every play through ive done has been solid vlandia crossbow armies or going the khan approach with a solid army of khan guards that circle the enemy on horses. You must be hella deep into this game to have 40 companions.

It’s a shame this city didn’t have a more defensible fall back location , I’ve won a few where my initial force has kinda lost the gate and there’s hardly any chance to get it back so you run off with most of your men and set up your archers in a little choke and defend from there

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions

Archers covering your infantry in a defensive siege like that works so well on Bannerlord for a simple reason : Arrows stagger enemy infantry and restrain them from even attacking your troops. And if they manage to land a hit, either it's on a shield, or on an heavy armour, doing almost no damage. With enough archers, there is so much arrows staggering the enemy infantry that it's almost as if they're getting perma cc'ed until they die.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  3 месяца назад

Yep, it's savagely effective. The best thing for them to do would be to split, shield-wall and charge the archers but then we'd just break our square into an attacking division and cause carnage.

Sieges like this are so hard because even if you're outnumbered 1 to 5, a 1 to 5 kill ratio wont do. Because once your inital elite troops are gone and militia comes you know you cant keep it up, so you need like a 1 to 10 kill ratio

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions

Damm, what a pity! Maybe if you were less reckless you would have stayed alive enough to make use of the reinforcement and win!
Probably one of the problems was that you made your troops retreat too much from the door, giving the enemy enough space to push through. Gg thought

I had something similar once, managed to turn sturgian troops into hero unit thanks to a mod and turned a group of 499 sturgian troops in named character XD thats a force to reckon with since all of them become the equivalent of combat oriented lord(who minds you can be a threat on any battlefield) it was my most fun to date bannerlord run and the only one I remained as a mercenary company the entire time. Overwhelmed a siege camp just as they started the siege, had unexpected reinforcement from the ai lord who sallied out his entire force. I'm not sure if the mod still work, but I would love to try this again but with a different faction's troops

Very nice defending. Never thought to let the enemy enter and make a killbox inside the fort. Very nicely done. Of course, I never faced such insane odds :). I don't know how the AI ever got that many units together, I think the biggest pool of armies on one side was a little under 2k troops.
Also love the editing and the music of the video.
    P.S.
Can you share what axe you are using (I'm assuming crafted) ? Seems perfect for siege battles.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions

Thanks for the kind words. I love a great seed. The huge armies are from a very late game campaign. The ax is a custom ax which I no longer have the directions for but I can say look for a short fast ax that's better for seeds than a long slow one
