Ever think you'd see Windows running on a Nintendo DS? Well, here it is. Thanks to a homebrew application called DSx86, it's possible to run Windows along with a good amount of DOS games on the DS or DSi!

The developer of DSx86 was developing a 3DS port conveniently called 3DSx86, but it seems they never finished/released it. Quite unfortunate really, as the DS version was really great and would've benefited a lot from the extra power from the 3DS.

Oh man, I had the SuperCard DSTwo. It was super interesting because it basically houses an extra CPU on the card itself that's more powerful than the DS hardware. It allowed me to play Commander Keen on the DS of all things! There were some really neat emulators for it as well.

@@MrJ0mmy shut up Self Advertiser
@@NatetheNintendofan Yeah, southern advertisers are really rude these days.
Why not? Of course it’s ARM/THUMB architecture, but there have been ARM to x86 interpretation setups for years. The biggest issue with the DS is the lack of a keyboard, but that’s why you wrap it in a file that includes a touchscreen keyboard, like with early touch monitors in the 80s & 90s.
@@MrJ0mmy we aren't stupid. I have a plugin where I can see people's uploads without going on their channel.
@@endymallorn that and emulation on something as under powered as the DS. So the fact you can do that and ahve a keyboard. Still an impressive feat. More so 3.0 then 1.0

One thing you could have tried was using SUBST to map the folder with your installation files to a drive letter (A in this case). SUBST has been around since MSDOS 3.1 I believe and essentially allows you to map any folder to a drive letter. It even still works in modern Windows. :)
Sus boot
@@jtfoog5220 Sub soot
Now I have the sudden urge to do this, but with every drive letter.
I used subst in Windows 95 to hide my files from my parents. Win+R for the run dialog. Run "cmd" for a terminal, then type "mkdir secret" and hold Alt while typing 0255 on the numpad before pressing enter. If you list directories with "dir" you'll see "secret" listed, but "cd secret" will say it doesn't exist. In the Windows file Explorer you'll see "secret_", but again be unable to open it. In the terminal you can "cd secret" if you add the Alt+0255, but that's inconvenient and doesn't let you open stuff in Windows programs. That's where subst came in: "subst s: secret"Alt+0255. Now Windows has a drive S: with your stuff. You can hide it again, but don't have to remember to because subst resets on reboot.
I use subst to mount folders with a path >260 characters.
oh and also to have my sync folder as drive
This takes me back. I was such a nerdy kid. Loved messing around with DSx86. Could never get Windows working tho. This is some childhood wish fulfillment.
fancy seeing you here
I remember using this app to play Alone in the dark on my DS lite. I was an amazing experience!
BTW I have that Pokémon with the keyboard, but it doesn't have the GBA slot accessory, the BT receiver is in the cartridge itself.
Yes
There's something delightfully pointless about using a handheld capable of running 3d games to emulate a decades old OS to play solitaire. Love it!
It's not pointless.
@@seronymus How so?

I should see whether that works on PomDS.
Exactly what I needed! Program Manager on my DS!
It's too bad no one has really tried getting Windows CE to run on DS. That version of Windows was meant to run on ARM based platforms I think or at least non x86 stuff like the DS. No idea what the boot process/driver situation would be for an OS like that though. Only time I ever personally interacted with Windows CE was with the inventory scanner tool I used when I worked in the back at Wal-Mart back in 2013 or so and those things had Windows CE on them. CE is weird though and seems to be customized for almost every platform one finds it on. Not to mention the apps you can run on it would be super limited. Definitely can't run normal x86 windows stuff in Windows CE. :P
Wow that’s cool

oh wait, britain actually got the DS keyboard aswell!! it was a normal bluetooth keyboard, but it came with a pokemon typing game that had a bluetooth chip inside the cartidge. i remember seeing it in the shop years ago.
very nice video on installing windows 2.0 to 3.0 on the Nintendo DS! now, *let's see you install 95 next...*
Actually the physical keyboard for the DS didn't have an adapter that hooked up to the GBA Slot. The Pokemon cartridge had the adapter built into it and other DS cartridge had extra tech them
That would mean you could still use the keyboard for the game on your 3DS?
@@TtEL Yes
There was a bluetooth one too i think
Hell yeah, love the Linode sponsorship. I want every channel I watch to be sponsored by them lol
It wouldn't be an original model Nintendo DS without that trademark broken hinge!
Broken Hinge©®
Happens to the Lite too.
My cousin's DS lite got that and eventually the top screen flex cable broke. Carefull with that hinge lol

There is one other issue with using the physical keyboard provided in Japan and Europe. That is you would need to program in or find a way to get firmware support in DSx86.
4:56 I like the name of the SD card.
Also I am curious how it would run on DSi using twilight menu + -bootstrap- , might try because I don't have a flash card.
(Edit: It works fine on my Unlaunch DSi. Also I forgot it was homebrew and so it does not use bootstrap.)
To those who don't get the joke, this is the video id for Never gonna give you up
Good Question 😬
It would not run under twilightm menu+bootstrap as it cannot get other files on an sd card, so you have to run it under unlaunch.
Dsi and 3ds throttle the cpu to norml ds clock speeds when running a ds game to prevent issues and errors
@@jspantonio8807 Nowadays you can run any game with the increased clock speed and ram using TWLoader
This is just amazing and insane at the same time, I would love to see you trying to install Windows on other consoles like the 3DS and PSP or Wii U.
There's also a Windows ''clone'' made for the Nintendo 8 Bit similar to the Windows XP video on the Nintendo DS you made before that would be really cool to check out.
Ahhhhh, Learn With Pokémon: Typing Adventure, was also released in the EU and Australia.

The resolution is always a problem when running emulators on a DS. It’s too low res even for NES emulation.
Maybe you should try this on a 3DS instead? That screen is 320x240 and perfect for DOS stuff at least.
Imagine running Windows NT 5 Beta 2 on a 3DS and a build of Windows Longhorn that has the Slate theme on a wii u😂

12:21 as someone who has that game, i can say that there was no adapter for the gba slot. The keyboard connected to the ds by normal wireless connection in-game, with no extra adapters
16:15 well 1.0 real mode was tested as playable earlier in the video, I wonder if there is a setting in the ini file that would help you get 1.0 installed

Good video mjd!
Michael i think if you're planning on making more DS content you should get a DSI XL/DSI LL, these cost just 5-7$ and have a much bigger display that can help you with cam recording (and make stuff like this more usable on the DS)
Personally, when I bought my nintendo ds and some flash cards, that was a great time, but it's now years later that I learn that there will probably never be a homebrew comunity like nintendo DS's one
As a Owner of the Pokémon Typing Adventure game, there is NO GBA slot accessory. The DS cart the game came on was a unique that it had a Bluetooth chip inside of it. There are many videos showing game play on the 3DS or DSi which had no GBA port to use. (Both the DSi and 3DS where already out by the time Pokémon Typing Adventure was released.)
Can we appreciate the fact that Michael tried to Rickroll us at 4:39?
This guy types faster on a ds than I type on a regular keyboard
I was waiting for this.
actually the physical keyboard for the ds is a bluetooth keyboard, like you can connect it to your phone and stuff. since the ds dosent have bluetooh, the cartridge the keyboard was used for had a special bluetooth chip built in. unless your flash cartridge has one of those chips, and somehow the software you used to boot windows supports it, then youre out of luck for a physical keyboard
5:28 10000iq rickroll
I remember playing on the wii, the homebrew music jammed so hard, and i had so many games i played ion there that wasn't made for the wii
For 1.01, you probably could have used the "subst" command to map the install files as the A drive.
another great video, thanks for sharing.. have a great weekend..
Imagine installing windows 1 to 7 on the 3ds
This is honestly important, has lots of possibility for enterprise users of Nintendo ds

Heck yeah! Played Duke Nukem 2 SO MUCH on my DS with DSx86, I once even managed to install windows 1.0 under DSx86 any newer and it didn't work.
I always wanted a SuperCard DSTwo but sadly the flashcart was never sold here.
This is pretty cool. I also got win98 running on my new 2ds xl
you don't need to restart on the "unsupported int 2f call" error. you can press B to get off it like nothing happened
Yeah that’s what I did, it was just cut from the video.
The DSTwo was a beast of a flashcart. Best money ever spent back in the day.
23:40, 25:44 - I find it hilarious how you could have a dark theme (any colour theme you want, in fact) that worked everywhere in old Windows versions released 20+ years ago, but still CAN'T in a brand-new Windows 11 released in 2021... LMAO
I remember how I've been using WinXP classic theme on my laptop just because it was possible to set background to black and text to white and it looked cool with my dark-grey vista-esque wallpaper
Wow. That's..... pathetic
Great idea!
Seeing as the DSi has more powerful internals than the regular DS and DS Lite (more ram and faster clock speed), could it possibly run Windows 95?
