Thank you for this. I canoed the Colorado from Austin to the gulf then crossed the 5 to 7 mile bay to the island. My wife and I caught the truck that goes like once a week or so to the other side and camped for the week. Pure solitude pure heaven. At night wild hogs would surround our tent digging up crabs, who knew hogs loved crabs lol. We did not see one human for around 5 days. Was pure bliss, this was in the mid 1990's. The trip from Austin took 7 days, and our map was wrong, the last stretch was about 15 to 20 miles longer than the best map at the time. Fortunately a fishing boat came by and towed us the remainder, their tow was like 3 hours, would have taken us an entire day by canoe. To all those familiar with the brown flat water of the bays in south Texas, you should all go to the other side of Matagorda. The water is ice blue and the waves are outstanding. I tried to launch my canoe several times in the open gulf on the other side of the island but the waves said NO. I wish I had had a kayak, think I could have done it then. Understand that this video is the county from what I see, not the island itself. The island is uninhabited and only the 1 truck is permitted to drive on it and it is very infrequent. Its 35 miles long and a mile or so wide with a cool old lighthouse. NO stores what so ever, so if you dont bring what you need you wont get it there!!

Grew up spending time on this Beach late 50's through 70's...almost unrecognizable with all the changes the Corps of Engineers did and have caused. No more huge white sand dunes and behind them pristine Tital Flood Plains. The Beach was solid then for miles, not this thin, easily washed away strip. There use to be zillions of types of huge flocks of Seabirds and shells. Dolphins playing behind the breaker waves...Sharks too.

I caught a 33" redfish a few years ago from the beach area in the center at 0:31. Matagorda is beautiful!

All that water is gone now and the pier only has water under it at the very end! I used to fish it all the time, but not any more! I miss it!

Nice video, I have been fishing Matagorda mostly in the river since I was a kid, I had some great days on the Pier as well caught my biggest Speckled Trout ever 28" and some other really nice fish., but this was all before re dredge and now the water diversion doesn`t allow anymore good Pier Fishing like before, I like the arial view for sure Thanks.

Except that is not the Colorado Rivermouth, it's part of the enter coastal canal.

Its still the lower Colorado River. The corp of engineers put the diversion channel in to take flood waters from up north into the bay. The ICW goes from east to west not south.

And since when did the Colorado River go into an ocean? I always thought it went into the Gulf of Mexico.

@@redfish1365 are you saying the water is not ocean water when the Atlantic ocean circulates through the gulf, the Gulf of Mexico is just the name of the ocean water. duh!
