Simple Who do you want to be? Do you want to be C-USA? Then Add markets, geography be damned: UTEP, Sac State, Texas State, North Texas, Tarelton State UC Davis. Want to be the Sun Belt Conf? Add programs (mostly FCS) with built-in rivalries, passionate fanbases, and geography on your side: Idaho, Montana, Montana State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State. Personally I lean SBC build.

In this day and age, you need to be who the media partners want you to be.
The built in rivalries you list rely on the hopes that these schools want to move to FBS. It’s unlikely they all do right now.
      But point well stated!

Montana, South Dakota, and North Dakota have about 3 million people collectively. Sacramento has 2.3 million Metro. That is all you need to know about the viability of your "SBC" option.
They'll stay where they are. It would be a financial disaster for them to move up.

Thanks for the shout-out gentlemen! I greatly appreciate it! All the schools you mentioned have value in one way or another. But the first move that should be done if it hasn't been done already is to contact your Media partners and find out if they have any ideas on which schools would bring value to the Mountain West. And then go from there. There is a possibility that this could actually mean that they would need to grab 6 schools because Air Force is looking into being a football only member of the AAC. It's going to be an interesting season.

The key question facing the MW is can they keep Air Force & UNLV or not? That determines how many backfill replacements they need. I would start with NM ST. The arch rival of NM ST is actually UTEP, so they are a good pair. Sac St should be the selection with them. Then I would look at options like the Montana schools.

Another target that the Mountain West should look at, the Uni. of Idaho (Vandals) of Moscow Id. Member of the Big Sky Conference, went up to FBS and joined the WAC then the Sun Belt Conference, then dropped back down to FCS. If you are looking at Montana and Montana St. then need to look at the Uni. of Idaho.

    • @anthonytitone
      @anthonytitone 3 дня назад +1

I would agree but it’s probably hard to convince a school to move up to FBS again after they just dropped back after failing in the FBS. MW needs 8 to be an FBS conference & that’s where they’re at now but there’s a chance they lose more to the PAC so I say go big & add Sac State, NMSU, & the Montana schools, that gets u back to 12 & then if they lose 2 more they can look at teams with question marks like Idaho, the Dakotas & west Texas schools

    • @Awalker5000

@@anthonytitone Yeah, its tough to go up then the alumni going crazy about going back down to the FCS level. The only thing that could be holding them back right now is the finances. Sac St is a very interesting candidate considering before the Troy Taylor era, the football program was historically bad with just 3 postseason appearances in any division over a 65+ year timeline. The athletic department is also very interesting in that as you called out, sponsors alot of sports and they currently have the largest athletic budget (and close to largest football budget) in the big sky.
However, their recent fundraising efforts to upgrade their basketball facilities (currently with one of the smallest gyms in all D1) ended up with the school only able to raise enough funds to repurpose their student union center. Serious changes would need to be undertaken by the school and the donors in order to make a successful jump to FBS. Despite the state of California's football prowress in football many programs have died in the pursuit to move to the bigger tiers.

    • @torranceyork2486
      @torranceyork2486 3 дня назад +1

Actually they also have a deal with the Kings to use Golden One Center an nba arena. They also just passed yesterday a new student fee to fund athletic facilities. There is also 75-100 million sitting to start the football stadium rebuild. They have more than what they need to move up to FBS. The past is the past this isn’t the now at that school. Lots going on In The background since the New President started last year. The well events center repurpose is temporary will seat 3500 and is much better than the old gym. If they have to use Golden One Center for Basketball they will.

@@torranceyork2486 They've played one game at Golden 1 center, with nothing scheduled for 2024. But that's besides the point, the support and fundraising has been a huge barrier to the school making a further jump in their athletics. Yes, the "SAC-12" is the new group that is trying to bridge the gap with lots of promises etc (including PAC12 memership as its ultimate goal) but all this is wishful thinking and has yet to be seen in practice.

Northern Arizona used to be conference mates with Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, UTEP, Texas Tech, West Texas A&M and Hardin Simmons in the old Border Conference. So, they are not new playing at the top level before.
You need to add California schools and the three FCS California schools could help offset the Hawaii's travel situation. It could get Hawaii in as full then as well. You need 8 for FBS, but 7 for other sports, if they lose Air Force and UNLV to the PAC 12? MWC would not be in compliance with the NCAA.
You have not touched on some candidates.
Lamar's football was brought back from the dead with former Sooners' coaches of Switzer and Tubbs.
    ACU
Both schools spent money to upgrade their facilities.
    UTRGV in south Texas
Long Beach State yeah, they don't have football, but they have been talking about restating football to join the MWC.
Utah Tech outside of Vegas could be a logical target in the future if you lose UNLV.
UTA's students voted to for the school to restart their football program.
There is a school in D2 right now that could be FBS in the future. Central Oklahoma They are in Edmond in the OKC's media market. They already raised money recently to upgrade the football stadium and baseball field.

Sac St students passed a referendum to build an arena and rec center. The rec center was built and is known as The Well. But, the president at the time, said a building next to the football stadium had to be demolished and a new fieldhouse had to be built before the arena could be built! This makes no sense since the arrival was going to be built on another part of the stadium! The reality is they needed this field house so that they can host some track and field events like the USA Trials. So the arena has never been built.
Last year, the current president said he will build a new place for the basketball teams to play inside The Well- the rec center! But the volleyball team plays at the old gym. The basketball teams’ schedules have been released and games are at the old gym. A google search shows no stories about the progress of the new “arena”
The Sac St fans say they can play at the Kings arena! Yeah, at what costs? I don’t know if the Kings arena before their current arena is still an active arena! It could be standing, but getting ready for demolition. May or may not be another option.

    Wyoming New Mexico
    UTEP New Mexico State
North Dakota State South Dakota State
    Hawaii
Is the conference as strong as it once was? No, but it has the foundations to still compete against other Power 6 conferences. The American is going to take a hit too. Trust me on that. Teams like Tulane, Memphis, & maybe even Rice and South Florida could join the best of the rest PAC conference. I think this version of the MW is right in the middle of the Power 6 behind the PAC & American.

The more I think about it the more I see the Rio Grande corridor as important to strengthening the conference. Bringing in both NMSU and UTEP will kick UNM in the ass and force them to up their game. UTEP also has a large TV Market, NMSU would be equivalent to a Utah St marketwise. Then Sacramento St to keep our California market robust and to pair with SJSU. Also if the PAC dips into the AAC, I think Rice would be a perfect fit in the MWC, big endowment much like Wyoming and New Mexico, excellent market and they could be UTEP's pair. If we can't get Rice, Tulsa would be another solid option. So that's 4 that would get the MWC back to 12. I would prefer they be bold and go to 16 in Football again taking more schools in the TX footprint. Then add St. Mary's and Gonzaga in basketball only getting us to 18 Basketball Schools. If those schools don't pan out for hoops look at adding Grand Canyon in Phoenix and search for the best possible basketball school available, maybe a Wichita St. The MWC needs to be aggressive to fend off the PAC. The PAC is nothing more then the MWC West, it's a lateral situation for those schools.

So, "their system" includes San Jose St., San Diego St., Fresno St., Humboldt St., and 18 others including all of the Cal Polys. At the very least the MWC can pick up teams like New Mexico State, Louisiana Tech and some FCS teams that want to jump up, the best of these is Sacramento State because again its all about TV market.

Stephenville, just a little bit outside Dallas? It doesn’t even touch the DFW combined statistical area, their county barely borders the far western reaches of the CSA, which is even bigger of a stretch than the MSA!

Lots of what he said about Sac State is incorrect. They have made 4 straight FCS playoffs they won the Big Sky Championship 3 years in a row. The Head Coach Troy Taylor went to Stanford to be the new Head Coach last year. They have a tv population of 4 million in the 6 county area so that why it’s a huge Tv market. They have the Kings and the A’s will be playing there until 2028, until the Las Vegas stadium is done which isn’t for sure. They have 31,000 students. They have plans for a new football stadium and also just raised student fees to fund athletics facilities. The basketball ball team will be moved to a temporary on campus events center that will have seating for 3500 moving out of the old gym they had which was pitiful. They have also signed a deal with the Kings to use Golden State Center a NBA Arena. There is a lot of interest here in Sacramento for more sports. People here don’t like the big sky it’s a watered down FCS league and Sac State would get lots of attention if they went FBS with regional rivalry with San Jose State, Nevada and being in FBS you could potentially get home and home games with P-12 schools like Fresno State , San Diego State , Maybe UNLV and both Cal and Stanford. Sacramento State has already played all these schools in Football and Basketball. They already have the required 21 sports required for FBS. They are a great top target. UC Davis would also be a good add cause they sit in one of the counties that are apart of the Sacramento TV Market and are a rival to Sacramento State.

The MWC definitely should look at Texas State. I don't think it will be joining the Pac-12 and would make a lot of sense for the MWC if it wants to go that far out of the west and should be open to making a move as far as financial considerations. Agree that UTEP should definitely be considered.

Problem that I see is regarding media deal or media value for the MW. The star of the show has left, Boise State. TV bosses are probably asking where is the value in the MW now? Do other possible candidates you mentioned also see this? I'm not sure if any of the FBS schools you mentioned would even want to take a chance. I think there are dark clouds ahead for the MW unless they can turn it around somehow. Not to mention UNLV and Air Force are probably gone soon as well. I like your show and I know you are trying to keep it positive, and sorry to sound like a buzz kill here but I'm really worried this turns into what we saw with the WAC years ago. I'm for the Montana schools joining I think they bring "brand" and Sac brings the market.

Of the 42 Nielsen tracked nationally televised games (CBSSN does not report viewership figures) that featured Mountain West teams in 2023, 23 featured the four teams that left for the Pac. Air Force and UNLV had a further 6 - and both have a spot in the AAC if they dont manage a spot in the Pac. The six teams likely to stay in the Mountain West only had 13 major broadcast games. Teams people want to watch get games, unpopular teams do get on the air with popular teams, but as a rule the fewer major broadcast games you have, the less people want to watch your team. So it looks like the MW has roughly 30-40% of its media base intact at this point, its very unclear what media deal they would garner - I would guess between CUSA and Fun Belt numbers, $1.2 million/school. Likely much less than even Fun Belt teams make. Adding FCS teams and FBS programs like UTEP and NMSU adds nothing to your total value - each mouth needs fed. Wyoming, San Jose, and Utah State by themselves have the lions share of the remaining value and would likely be better off joining the AAC with Air Force, which is still a possibility.
My bet is Air Force, Wyoming, and Utah State join the AAC, the latter two as travel partners for Air Force and back fill for the teams poached by the Pac tomorrow.

Tarleton had a ton of money, and they will spend it! They recently broke crown on a new basketball arena. And they are actively looking to get into a FCS conference.
How big should the MWC go? Back 12 football teams and 11 full members? Or go to 14? 12 football teams and 11 full members? Or 12 football, 11 full members and 1 non football member? Replace SDSU!
MWC will be at 6 schools when UNLV and Air Force leave. So, NMSU and UTEP need to be added to get back to 8. Then do you add Tarleton and ACU to get into Texas? ACU is in West Texas. Or the Montanas?
Unless they give Hawaii full membership, add a non football schools with a good basketball program! How about Cal Baptist? MWC gets into LA market. Ok Cal Baptist is about 60 miles from LA. CBU has great facilities, and money to spend.!

To me, Sacramento State and Tarleton State would be awesome. Sacramento is the 2nd biggest tv market in California. Tarleton State is right outside the Dallas/Fort Worth area, which is the top tv market in Texas. Both, as you pointed out, are growing programs that are investing a lot of $ into their athletics. I would look, in this order: Sacramento State, UTEP (gets you into Texas), NM State, and Tarleton State. HAVE to get great tv markets with this expansion. I dont think North Texas or Texas St come to the MWC and UTSA will probably be Pac12. Like Ive pointed out before; the Montana schools and Dakota schools bring nothing to the table except regionality. Wont have any monetary gain to the conference. With that in mind, I wouldn’t target either unless you absolutely have to if the other options fall through, to keep the conference afloat. Just my 2 cents though.
