How did that ALSO get botched? These refs did EVERYTHING to keep the Irish with a chance to win this game.
Because a Notre Dame player was injured momentarily. So the referees by rules are allowed to offer the Irish to have a time out charged to their team or a game clock reset to 40 seconds and they did they let it run down to zero and then NIU called a timeout. And they set up their field goal. Those are the rules. Hope that helped. Obviously the coach for Notre Dame wanted to save that time out. But he literally cost about 15 plus extra seconds. Going frame by frame, it's hard to tell exactly when he goes down, but it looks like his right knee goes down just before the rest of his body. Going back to the replay at 6:06, it looks like his knee comes down right at the 1st down marker, maybe a little past it, but it's hard to tell cause a Notre Dame player's leg is blocking the runner's knee. Going back again to the replay at 7:25, his knee pretty clearly (at least, compared to the rest of the shots we have) comes down ahead of his torso (where the ball should be). But remember, I'm doing this by examining two different replays, guessing where his knee is, guessing where the ball is, and guessing where he's down. It has to be CLEAR AND OBVIOUS. Which is the exact opposite of guessing. So, the call must stand. The announcers are absolutely wild for saying it's not even close, but I understand why they do because he gets dragged for another 1/2-1 yard after he's down, so it looks like it's a first down.

Terrible spot after the third-down play late in the game. And even with replay, the head referee still called it short ... Absolutely disgraceful and disgusting!
They saw an injured Notre Dame player on the field. So a few seconds after the play was dead that's when he blew the whistle. And then the 10-second runoff rules apply. And then the Notre Dame coach said go ahead and let the :40 sec play clock run because he wanted to save that time out. Knowing that they denied the first down on the replay. That's when NIU called their time out with 34 seconds to go and kicked the go-ahead field goal
I think ND actually did take their timeout there and the TV crew just missed it. Mike said at one point during ND's final drive that they were out of timeouts.
@@allennewhausen2541 I think because they wanted to save that 10-second runoff that's automatic when an injured player is on the field. And Mike made a mistake by saying that they got their time out back. But they didn't according to the rules

Which is the exact opposite of guessing. So, the call must stand. The announcers are absolutely wild for saying it's not even close, but I understand why they do because he gets dragged for another 1/2-1 yard after he's down, so it looks like it's a first down.
That was awesome. Thanks for sharing!
16:50 That’s the face of a man who really understands what this win means
Love his emotion. Good for him, what a great job. And even better that it came against ND AND the refs
"Guys, you remember where you're at", LOL
I'm an ND fan, that was a first down, the best TEAM won and to sum it all up.....................NIU Beat NIL
I wish the official had your honesty and integrity
For everyone's sake thankful that that wasn't a 4th down mistake. ND would have taken over and won the game 14-13 and that would have been a travesty! I'm ND fan all the way, but the better team won, here's hoping NIU can win the rest of their games it would be a great story!
@@joesosinski8696 Say NIU and ND both run the table. NIU finishes 12-0 and ND finishes 11-1. Which team do you think the playoff committee would select for the tournament? Guaranteed it would come down to money, and NIU would be ruled short of the marker again . . .
I would think they'd both get in with that scenario, but if it was between the two for the last at large spot they shouldn't and wouldn't give it to ND. The playoff is a money maker they don't NEED ND to make money.
@@RichardBarnes-u8e if niu goes 12-0 and beats nc state and notre dame theyll make the playoffs. if nd wins out from here theyll also make it idk what ur talking about
GOATed radio call- how did I miss this call when it happened?
Great call by the NIU radio guys!
These are the kind of games that make college football special.
INVESTIGATE THOSE REFS! THAT SPOT WAS EGREGIOUS.
Dude that was a first down by a long shot. That’s unbelievable they spotted that ball there.
ND almost pulled off the upset
ANd the officials
And they only had to pay $1.4 million for that loss.🤣
Robbery *
Very funny.
*off
Fun to hear this. Watched it live and it blew my mind but this gave me goosebumps.
that ref should be arrested, that was clearly a first down and you could see him arguing with the NI coach. Just blatant corruption.
When this happens, I always wonder who the order comes from. It's hard to imagine it's just one ref on the sideline going rogue, especially after they don't overturn it upon review.
That last field goal block was just icing on the cake. ND knew it was a long shot and NIU said we ain’t even giving you the chance
I’ve heard of a “hometown call” not a “hometown review “? Absolute absurd to not give NIU a first down.
Fucking wonderful commentary work here
That WAS a first down!!!
that spot on the 3rd down run was downright EGREGIOUS. Dude wasn't even on his way down to the ground until he passed the first down marker by a full yard
6:09 😂that spot?????
Exactly. 1st down!
The joy of watching this in real time will never end.
The last line ... "gets a checek and a victory!" classic
I'm glad I watched this.. very exciting and as emotional as Coach Hammock got afterward, justifiably so, mind you, he was as cool as a cucumber in crunch time.. Kudos to the whole team and the broadcast crew
“It’s blocked”. Remind anyone of a particular game?
App State beating Michigan?
@@johnnyretro84absolutely
Mich wasn't rated very high at that time certainly not number 5
@user-ko2tj3ct1l actually they were ranked #5. Check your stats😅
@@YosiCalandrino-x5zthey were 5th… its still the biggest upset in college football history for a reason..
Home-cooking call by the ref. I have no dog in this fight, but that was a definite first down!
Wow! That was a first down. No question. And the Huskies still take it. Go Huskies!!!
From a Penn State fan...
Congratulations to NIU!
Wow! A Win for the Ages!
🏈🏈🏈❤️🏈🏈🏈
Wow that was a clear 1st. So glad NIU ended up winning with the refs on ND's side.
Great game, Huskies!!!
You played your hearts out! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Terrible spot after the third-down play late in the game. And even with replay, the head referee still called it short ... Absolutely disgraceful and disgusting!
What a call to put the spot a full yard short. The Vatican Called.
Not only was the spot on 4th down terrible, they immediately stopped the clock on a running play without charging ND a timeout.
@@allennewhausen2541 Thanks for clarifying. Rewatching the video, as you suggest, the announcers are assuming that ND doesn't have a TO to burn over the last 24 seconds, so they must have used it after the final NIU run, and the scoreboard just didn't reflect the use of the final TO.
Badgers fan here, dont got a dog in this fight, but that was 100% a first down, definitely a home town call.
The announcers were far nicer than they should have on that criminal 3rd down spot by the Notre Dame refs.
They are probably trained not to act too emotional during these situations
Absolutely love the leadership from NIU’s number 44 on the blocked fg, immediately telling his teammate to go down with that football!
i love color pointing out they got screwed out of the first down. "We aren't getting a favorable position, I'll tell you that much."
Good job NIU. Ya'll came down to GA a few years ago and did the same thing to my GT Yellow Jackets......still hurts.
“Gets the check and the victory”. Love to hear that! (Unless it’s my Vols or MSU bulldogss haha)
SHADESSSSSSSSSSSS of Appalachian State-Michigan. HELL YEAH. Glorious.
That "injury" at 1:33 smacks of what the Oregon Ducks do at every game in which they need the clock to stop.
Didnt work out well with a 10 sec runoff. Then they started the clock anyways.
Agreed !
@@williambarrows7136it was either the 10-second runoff and then start the play clock again, or get charged a timeout. Obviously the Notre Dame coach wanted to save that time out so he took the 10-second runoff and the other play clock ran down that's when NIU called a timeout to set up for the field goal since they denied the first down on the replay. It (the injury) approximately lost Notre Dame about 15 more seconds, if they just would have let it go. They might have had a chance for one more 10 yard pass or something over the middle instead their quarterback sucks so bad he couldn't even hit a guy, even with that one last time out they still had.
Time out helped your boys out dude ???
@@danielburgoyne8603 If you are referring to the Washington-Oregon game, no, it didn't. It stopped the clock, which didn't start again at "ready to play," it started at the next snap--gave Oregon 10-15 extra seconds to run 2 more plays.
Props to NIU coach, dude coached his ass off to close out the game and his team stayed disciplined and focused. Awesome job.
South Bend residents were so frustrated that they declared the city was also in Illinois.😅😅😊😊 Yes, I like Irish jokes.
That blocked FG at the end reminded me of Appalachian State.
App st grad here.1980.way to go niu!
Bill Baker was the Voice of the Huskies for over 40 years and it's a shame he retired before he could call this game!
Remember him being the voice of WKKD in Aurora IL for years
That NIU coach was crying, freaking crying. How awesome is that, cant say I've seen a head coach cry and im not making fun of him. That's freaking awesome.
