For Southerners, Cracker Barrel is the mass produced version of the food you would eat at Granny’s house. It’s good, but it’s a pale imitation of the homemade stuff. That being said, it’s a great place to stop and have a decent meal on long road trips.
Europeans always laugh about how overweight Americans are but Andrew and Nicola are finding out why every day as they try all these American classics. We have 200 cable channels, an infinite choice of food that we can have delivered, and a Cracker Barrel down every other street. No wonder we're all fat. LOL.
I've lived in Europe as well as Asia, and we are NOT the only large folk. Many of them are just as uhhhh...puggy. Speaking of which, I need to get my puffy self back on the treadmill...lol...
That’s hilarious too because having a Cracker Barrel obsessed family, and having had homemade chicken and dumplings, my first thought when I saw the dumplings was….bet those need some black pepper. The gent called it! Well done sir!
That whole pot of gravy was meant for thr chicken fried steak, the biscuits in that case is with butter and honey or jelly. I about died when I saw him put the cornbread in the gravy, that is a sin!!! Cornbread and butter, maybe some honey
If you have fried okra and it's still slimy, it's cooked wrong. Okra should be crunchy like popcorn. I use just cornmeal when battering my okra. Nothing else. Coat in cornmea, then fry until crispy. No slime at all. Most restaurants cook their okra like Cracker Barrel, and thats just plain wrong.
I love okra but I’ve never had it at Cracker Barrel. Strangely, I really like Church’s. My dad used to slice it then mix with egg and cornmeal and make a patty, then fry it. Yummy!
Not necessarily true. The size of those okra cuts will be slightly slimy inside around the seeds even after frying. Grandma woulda whipped us for letting okra get that big in the garden "cause now it ain't fit for nothin' but Soup or Seed!"
Let you guys in on a little secret---Cracker Barrel is a step above middle of the road as classic American diners go, but the REAL diner experience is best experienced at a non chain restaurant (or at most, a small local chain.) Mom and pop diners (as they're called, that or greasy spoon) can be hit or miss, but when they hit, they're usually some of the best classic American food you'll ever have.
Thanks for sharing. We would have loved to have gone to a mom and pop style diner but this was a rush stop from the airport. We did visit many other places in Nashville and will upload these videos soon..
@@thebritstryAlso, sausage and syrup and pancake is very much a thing. Look for a dish at diners called "pigs in a blanket". They also sell maple syrup flavored sausages in stores.
>Use the pancake as a bread... Ready for me to blow your mind? We have those. Breakfast sausages, wrapped in pancake, dipped in syrup. Yeeeeeeah baby! :)
@@thebritstry. Toasted either plain white bread or sour dough bread, some either like toasted rye bread with real salted butter ( not margarine ) …melted and real honey on top….not the fake honey…..with a hot cup of coffee ( and as we New Yorkers say CAWFEE…) no sugar just milk preferably 2 percent fat…
I never thought of having to explain to someone about putting butter and syrup (or honey) on each pancake or waffle. 🤔 I guess it's easy to say when you're taught to do so, or even just learn by watching adults do it when you're a very young child. I'm glad you told them. 🙂 They'll know for next time.
As a Tennessean, I can attest that Cracker Barrel is good country cook'n, but having grown up with Mother's and Mamaw's vittles it's just good. However, both of them are gone now and there's one about 15 miles away from me. So, I do get my vittles fix there every once in a while. Love the sweet and savory comment Nicola. It's true. LOL! Andrew, putting hot sauce on chicken 'n dumplings is perfectly acceptable. Hope you had a great time in Nashville. Cheers
@@thebritstryanother Tennessean here. 💁🏻♀️ Glad you enjoyed our state’s capital city. If you’re ever through there again, you’ll have to make a stop at Prince’s for the original Nashville Hot Chicken. You might want to start with the mild, though, as it can be quite spicy for someone who’s not used to it.
You two are a perfect couple. having fun and sharing life. I wish my wife could still be here. I miss having someone. Been 6 years. We loved Cracker barrel. We'd share all our foods. When we first met our first date i reached over with my fork and got something off her plate. She didn't know what to think as no one ever did that before. From then on it was anything goes and she learned to take off my plate and loved it. Fun times with my soulmate. I miss her. But I love seeing others having the same fun we had. Makes me smile.
If those were my only choices then I’d probably skip dessert!🤣 Not a big fan of either. I’ll take coconut cream pie, a good carrot cake or anything chocolate any day.
You missed out by not putting gravy on the chicken.. Love Cracker Barrel 8 out of 10 time's I've gone there i order the same thing. Chicken Fried Chicken with the saw mill gravy, hash brown casserole, grits, soft scrambled eggs with biscuits. Since i moved to California in 2004 i only got a chance to eat there while traveling. But here in the last year or two they have started opening a few locations here in California... Always bought my cast iron skillets in their country store section...
Thanks for sharing your love for Cracker Barrel and your go-to order! It's great to hear about your positive experiences. We really loved the hash brown casserole and Fried Chicken. The store section at the entrance is very good
As a Southerner from the great state of Tennessee, black pepper is a must on chicken and dumplings, noodles, and mac and cheese…enhances the flavors to me.
Cracker Barrel is the quintessential country cooking restaurant. I like the breakfasts they offer. I know honey isn't your favorite but it works well on cornbread .
Cracker Barrel really does have that classic country charm, doesn't it? The store at the front was so interesting. We will give honey another go next time.
My first experience at Cracker Barrel, I didn't know what it was I thought it was a restaurant. But when you first walk in your see that general store with all the gifts. (LOL True story) I told my family NOPE THIS ISN'T A RESTAUANT WE MADE A MISTAKE! And we promptly left, my sister invited to breakfast the next weekend and took us to Cracker Barrel
I'm glad you are enjoying such good food , nothing against Cali , but nothing beats good ol southern cooking peach cobbler is my favorite , the crust shouldn't be that hard
No offense taken San Diego has wonderful food; sea food, Mexican food, Asian food and others but southern food ...well we have it but you really have to look.
@@brendahowell6796 Common mistake, they "nuked" (Microwaved) it cold from storage, just like warming toast in a microwave. But it was a cracker barrel, most of that food is just warmed in a microwave...it's a seriously low tier joint...I personally haven't ate there since I tried it 30 years ago, but I guess it beats McDonalds and does offer comfort food.
@@markreed392 seeing yall say “seafood” is such a wild statement haha .. coming from Texas/louisiana when we have crawfish/crab/shrimp boils every weekend!! , yalls Mexican food is pretty similar though to ours , any state that borders Mexico has great Mexican food lol !!!
Still loving the vids. For the white gravy on the country fried steak. It’s not supposed to have sausage in it. I’m glad y’all liked it though. I only like fried okra when it’s double fried that takes the slimy away and your left with a crunchy good flavor.
The syrup for the pancakes was heated to have warm syrup, that’s why it looked like water when poured out but it is thicker if it’s not warmed up. It tastes good to have warm syrup than cold.
I'm so glad you guys used the butter on the pancakes. I've seen so many Brits just eat pancakes with syrup but the butter cuts into the sweetness and balances it out. Corn muffins or cornbread are generally savory in the south. I had some made by someone from Illinois who used sugar when I was a kid and it was so strange to me because I'd only ever had savory cornbread. Meatloaf and mashed potatoes are a good comfort food. Most people either love it or hate it. My go to at Cracker Barrel is their blueberry pancakes. You were just a few hours south of where I live in Louisville, KY. You should come up here sometime around Derby (1st Saturday in May). We have a loads of festival events the week or so leading to the event and lots of out of town visitors from all over. We're also a foodie town so you can find lots of great restaurants to try.
I’ve always found that most people like their mom’s meatloaf much better than anyone else’s. There are so many ways to make it. My mom always used hamburger and pork sausage together in hers. Miss it!
Cornmeal is ground coarse... So it's supposed to be grainy. Some people add a lot of flour to the cornmeal so it's less grainy. It's a personal preference on the texture.
It's also a sharp dividing line as to whether it should be yellow or white. My family all loved the white type. Sometimes the yellow type is made with some sugar, almost like a cake.
One of my grandmas used half flour and half white cornmeal and added an egg, the other used just yellow cornmeal. The first was more of a johnnycake and the second was more traditional cornbread. It wasn't a regional difference - they grew up a few miles from each other.
@@thebritstrycornbread style is definitely a preference! There is sweet or savory and and differing amounts of grittiness. I love the sweet, but savory seems most popular!
@@katrinaprescott5911 alot of personal preferences on cornbread. My mom always added an egg and used milk. A lot of people like it sweet, some not. Hot water cornbread is also big, but we never had it.
Cornbread at my house is typically served with peas & butter beans, cabbage, collard greens, or lima beans. Also, I make the old fashioned cornbread which is not sweet and does not taste like a muffin. We also eat our left over cornbread in warmed milk.
Chicken fried steak with gravy is an American labor of love...had you come here to America in the 1970s in some time machine, at many places that would have been really tough and barely edible because if not done with SKILLS, cube steak is not tender. But these days, 50 years later, many Americans have now mastered it, and it is Delicious, as you've discovered.❤
That was the first thing I ever cooked for my husband when we first started dating. I had never made it before and it turned out awful. Lol, I don't know why I did that!
I am a 64 year old American man, born and raised in Peoria Illinois, and I have never been to a Cracker Barrel in my life. I have one about 10 miles from me, I have just never been there. You put butter on cornbread, you can dip it if you want, it's a free country, but I always eat my cornbread with butter on it, I cut it in half and put the butter in the middle of it. That is ketchup on the meatloaf, and you need to put some extra salt on the meatloaf at the table, it always needs extra salt, that makes it even better. Meatloaf can be good or bad, it depends on who makes it, and how you cook it. My parents used to cook meatloaf on a Weber grill over charcoal and it was amazing, because it put a smoke flavor in it, the best I ever had. And I also had meatloaf places that was so bad I could not eat it. I hate OKRA. They do not season the chicken, all the seasoning is in the breading. I always eat a biscuit with butter and jelly on it. I have never put jelly on cornbread in my life, only butter. Not a fan of peach cobbler, I would rather have dutch apple pie with vanilla ice cream, some people call it apple crunch pie.
Hey neighbor I'm from Shelbyville. Need to get to cracker barrel. It's pretty close to something grandpa and grandma would make. Not as good but closer than most restraunts.
Love Cracker Barrel's fried catfish, mustard greens, fries and fried apples. Glad you two are enjoying yourselves. It is a real effort not to gain weight in the States, for our food is so tasty and full of flavor.
Okra is a seed pod cut into coins. I personally love it. The seed are crunchy and coated in a lovely slime called mucilage 😂 its apparently great for digestion and seed germination, but it's like someone sneezed in your mouth. When cooked down it acts as a thickener in soups and stews, famously variations of gumbo.
@@thebritstryGumbo is thickened in one of two ways. Okra or File (pronounced fee lay ) powder. You use one or the other. If you use both your gumbo will turn into a brick. LOL Once upon a time okra was used when in season and File used in the off season. On another note, not all white gravy is made with sausage. On chicken fried steak it is normally just a cream gravy. Equal parts fat and flour are mixed and heated forming a Roux. It is not cooked long to keep the flavor light and milk (aka cream) is mixed in along with salt and pepper. While this and sausage gravy are similar they tend to have different flavors as sausage gravy tends to use the sausage drippings as the fat component where cream gravy tends to use butter as its fat component. Meatloaf can be bland or it can be beautiful. It is part of another simple meal you can whip up at home. There are thousands of recipes on how to make it. I like to mix some lipton onion soup mix into the meat before cooking. While the loaf is in the oven, you have plenty of time to boil some potatoes and turn them into mashed potatoes, heat up some green beans and then pull the loaf out of the oven. Pull it out of the pan and sit it on a board to cool a bit. While that is going on mix some butter and sliced mushrooms in a pan and get them soft. Add in the drippings from the pan and sprinkle in some flour. Cook the mixture until it is a light brown then add in some beef stock and mix well. Bring to a boil and now you have Meatloaf and mashed potatoes with brown mushroom gravy.
@@geegs120No matter the sauce or gravy it comes down to just 2 things. The liquid and the thickener. Everything else is just a variation of the two. A roux is a thickening agent. It uses the starch in flour to do the thickening. By mixing equal parts fat and flour you get a mixture that you can "cook" the raw flavor of the flour out. From there it is a choice Thickening power vs flavor. The lighter the roux the more it will thicken, and the darker the roux the more flavor it will impart but thicken less. Corn starch is another thickener. The true flavor comes from the liquid. You could thicken some beef stock for a basic brown gravy and same goes for chicken, vegetable or turkey stock. But the drippings are where the true flavor is at. Cook some basic seasoned hamburger patties in a pan and when they are done, toss in some onions, and mushrooms etc then add some butter to smooth out the fat. Sprinkle in some flour and cook the chunky roux to a nice light brown, add in some red wine. Bring to a boil and simmer. Try the same thing with all kinds of meats that you are cooking and find out what you like.
Meatloaf is good with a nice brown gravy too. But the real secret is making a meatloaf sandwich the next day, after its been in the fridge. Cover the meatloaf with black pepper, a bit of salt, and put mayo on the bread.
Okay, first off, let me say, "Thank you!" You see, I've watched several iterations of the Brits Try Cracker Barrel theme and y'all are the first I've seen that actually ordered chicken and dumplings. You got the best thing on the menu. Glad you enjoyed your experience! Have now subbed
Thank you so much for your kind words! Glad we found the hidden gem on the menu, it was delicious. Cracker barrel was a great experience. Let us know it there is anything or anywhere else we should try in the future?
Ahhh, but you didn't try the pinto beans with chow chow, onions and cornbread!!! We love it!!! My mom and dad were good friends of the Evins family and knew Danny and Eddie well.
If you make it up to Oregon or Washington, ESPECIALLY on the coast, you have to try clam chowder & some salmon…YUM!!! Everyone says MO’s clam chowder is the best.. the original restaurant is in Newport Oregon.
Yes! I’m in Washington, there’s cold smoked salmon, Dungeness crabs, Olympia oysters, scallops, and more. If you time your trip for late May, Copper River salmon is flown down from Alaska, it’s quite expensive but definitely worth it. It’s such a big deal the local news channel usually covers the arrival of the special Alaska Airlines plane making the first delivery. Then there’s the fruit, we are the ”apple state”, there’s an incredible variety of apples, plus apricots, sweet cherries, especially the Rainier cherries, berries like strawberries, blackberries, Marion berries, huckleberries and raspberries. Do you like wine? Some of the best wine in the country comes from Washington and Oregon.
Mo's (Florence) is one of the few things I miss about having lived in Oregon for a number of years. I would even pay mega bucks if I could by the frozen chowder base at the grocery store where I live now.
Oregon and Washington are nice for clam chowder but to me the best clam chowder would be a little closer to you guys up in Northern California. San Francisco. Clam chowder is really really good either that or New England clam chowder. Those are the two places for clam chowder
Cracker Barrel is the only place I ever consider ordering pancakes at a restaurant. There are places that have good pancakes, but CB is one of the only places that serves natural syrup rather than pancake syrup which is maple flavored corn syrup. That's why the syrup was so thin. The best way to have pancakes (imho) is with pure maple syrup. CB's is a combinations of pure maple syrup that has been cut with natural cane syrup. Not as good as straight pure maple syrup, but still way better than what most places serve.
The server told us we HAVE to try the pancakes, and we weren't really sold on the idea, but once we tried them we could see why! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on pancakes and syrup! It's always interesting to hear different perspectives on food choices.
Okra is the seed pod of a plant closely related to hibiscus. It tends to get slimy when cooked. It's used in one of the main types of gumbo, and it can also be pickled.
The pickled version is amazing, really good. You should also try chow chow, great on EVERYTHING. Lastly, go to a hotdog stand and order a Junkyard dog, it's got the whole kitchen piled on top of it and it's sooooo gooood.
@@kimberlyhicks3644 100% agree with the Chow Chow. Beans, cornbread, and Chow Chow; there's nothing better. I moved away from the south 40 years ago and I still get it shipped in. I used to have to rely on family to send it, but I've finally found a source on Amazon.
I’m glad you enjoyed Cracker Barrel! I so enjoyed it especially the meatloaf dinner. My favorite! Please go have lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. It’s amazing
You should have asked them to bring the dishes out a bit slower. I would imagine some of it was cold by the time you tasted it. Try honey on the cornbread, or butter !

I live in Alabama and love going to Cracker Barrel. One of my friends visited from Connecticut and had never been to Cracker Barrel, so we had lunch there and she really enjoyed the food and was surprised by how little it costs. I treated myself to a weekend in a hotel last New Year's Eve and day, and did nothing but relax, watch "The Twilight Zone" marathon, some classic movies, and had my meals delivered from Cracker Barrel. If you liked the blackberry jelly you can also make the cobbler out of blackberries (whole fruit)as well. The pankcakes can be topped with fruits and whipped cream. Then wrapped over for a different flavor choice.
Enjoyed the video as always, you guys are doing great work. Some Southern dishes are an acquired taste, you'll have to give it a 2nd or 3rd try to really appreciate it.
We only put butter on cornbread. I think i gagged a little when you put the jelly/jam/preserve on it. 😂 I dont remember Peach Cobbler having a hard texture. I'm thinking the ice cream on top of the warm pie top of the cobbler probably hardened it. Maybe next time, ask them to serve the ice cream on the side.
lol! We had no clue if we were supposed to put jam on the cornbread… It was like a very crispy pastry that was just on the top of the cobbler so we are not sure if it was even supposed to be on it. Next time we go we will ask for the ice cream on the side. Thanks for watching!🤗
I love Cracker Barrel. Good consistent food. You can’t eat country fried steak without gravy. I love okra!!! If it not fried it is slimy fried okra is not slimey. You probably had okra in gumbo. What other kind of ketchup is there than ketchup made of tomatoes???? Tomato ketchup is redundant. Grape jelly on cornbread sounds absolutely disgusting. I have never heard of anyone doing that. if you must put something on cornbread ( I don’t) put butter or honey. That “sweet cracker” on the peach cobbler is pie crust It is not “ like a pastry” it is a pastryY’all are so cute and funny Cracker Barrel’s meatloaf is not good and I love meatloaf.

@thebritstry That's why it's called Nashville Hot Chicken. Lol. It would be like having beignets in California. Lol!!! I love you guys. Nicola, you crack me up. Love your personality. Another great video!! Bye, yall!!
I despise okra. Growing up I tolerated it in gumbo because it was always in gumbo but yuck. You have to look at cornbread as a conveyance for a great many things savory and sweet. If there's dipping sauce then you dip it and you don't drizzle it on everything else within the main basket.
Aww, thank you! Your comment put a big smile on my face. And yes, the hunger is real , It's always tough editing these videos as they make you so hungry.
I love videos of this type! It's amazing to me when people from other countries and nationalities try our Southern food (I'm from Georgia) and American food in general and find so awesome the things that we Americans have grown up with and take for granted every day. It's wonderful to hear their comments and their "oohs" and "ahhs"! Count your daily blessings of the simple things, fellow Americans. Who knows if we will be able to enjoy them always! Now, where are my flapjacks and syrup?
I grew up in a southern home with a mom who made food from scratch each Sunday. I remember Cracker Barrel became really big in the 90’s where we lived so we had to try them out. My parents were mad that they paid for that food. We could’ve had WAY better at home. 30 years later, I find that I appreciate CB more after my mom passed. I can cook southern and better than CB but since it’s only me it’s just cheaper and more efficient to satisfy a yearly craving there instead of trying to cook it on my own. Plus, I do enjoy their gift shop and rocking chairs 😂
Corn bread is made with corn meal. So it is gritty just like grits lol. For me corn bread is best with soups especially soup beans and always butter all your breads, biscuits and corn bread lol. I like cracker barrel its definitely the blander version of good ole country cooking. Shouldve tried the cooked apples too maybe next time. For me my granny made blackberry or apple cobbler way more than any cobbler peach was least one made. Haha i always add my seasonings in my meat when i make meatloaf. I use some whorstishire sauce in it too along with garlic onion bell pepper salt black pepper egg and bread crumbs
The flavor for the meatloaf is ketchup, you could dip it in extra ketchup from the bottle of you need more. Depending on where you're from there are some southern people that put all the seasoning in the batter not the meat. My husbands mother is of that faction. Ocra freaks me out too, my husband just adores them. You have to try homemade pepper jelly it's a very southern thing. If you're ever in the mountains or smaller towns stop at the roadside little traders shops and get it there. They always have the real homemade versions made by a local. I prefer sweat cornbread but again my husbands mother makes the grainy more savory kind. They're from the countryside of North Carolina a tiny town. So I feel like cracker Barrel cooks like that region. What I get there is French Toast and bacon, they have the best bacon. Country fried Steak is another option I'd get.
I appreciate your detailed insights into Southern food traditions and your suggestions for trying out new dishes. Homemade pepper jelly sound interesting, we will definitely try and locate some.
Blackberry or blueberry cobbler is my favorite!! I’m not a huge fan of peaches! I have never seen a cobbler served with a pie crust on top before. I’m not a fan of that, myself! The signature element of a cobbler is the pastry-esque… kind of pastry dumpling chunks (not really sure how to describe that) inside a cobbler!! Mmmm!! Yummy in the tummy!!
You two are adorable! You'd make a true Southern cook very happy. They would watch you take every single bite of food. The watching is done out of care, They want to make sure that you're happy with your meal. If you have a favorite, they will always remember. Your favorites will be served if you visit or on certain occasions (tough times, special occasions, or if they have extra food).
Experimenting with food and finding what you like is the right way, too many Americans have forgotten this. And grainy cornbread just means it has courser cornmeal in it, I personally prefer the grainy ones.
Great video! I am now subscribed. As a southerner, I would like to point out that country fried steak is traditionally eaten completely smothered in the sawmill (white) gravy. Try it that way next time. Chicken fried chicken is also meant to be completely smothered in sawmill gravy. Also, goes on corn muffins. Never jelly or preserves. I would love to see you react to a real, home-cooked southern meal at someone’s home!
You made it to Nashville - how great! I have never been to a Cracker Barrel but everything looked great! Looks like good old comfort food. I've never had okra and I too am hesitant to try it because of the sliminess. Another great video Nicola and Andrew! Cheers!

lol I’m sitting here asking where the pepper was for the chicken and dumplings… if you like those you need homemade chicken and dumplings.. they are cheap and easy
Chicken and dumplings is a soup, the dumplings are cooked in a thickened broth best from bone in chicken. You can have carrots in it for a bit of color and shake black pepper on top for looks.Chicken fried steak is cube steak,it is tenderized and knitted together from unground meat using mechanical means.American Mac N Cheese is creamy, though I have seen foreign cooks make nasty dry versions. The okra slime is what sticks the breading on.Cornbread grittiness depends on the ratio of flour and corn meal.Peach Cobbler is typically made with thickened fruit and sugared pastry .Blackberry Cobbler is often made with sugared biscuit dough.

Country or chicken fried steak is typically made with cube steak (a cheap cut that is pounded or heavily scored with a knife.)
Thanks for sharing that information!
there's also minute steaks, it ain't bad. Kinda similar but no crunch.
Move the top pancake and put the butter on the second one and spread it some. Then put the top one back on, it helps the butter melt faster.
Wow!! Pro move right there!!! Why didn't we think of that?
I never thought of having to explain to someone about putting butter and syrup (or honey) on each pancake or waffle. 🤔
I guess it's easy to say when you're taught to do so, or even just learn by watching adults do it when you're a very young child.
I'm glad you told them. 🙂

Cheers
We Had a great time in Nashville! It is a fun city... Thank you for sharing your memories and thoughts on the food. It means a lot!
Ooops! I posted that comment before I saw your video for Hattie B’s. 🤦🏻♀️ Playing catch up here on your latest videos.
Cracker Barrel's headquarters are in Lebanon, TN, near Nashville. They have kitchen/lab there where they create and test new recipes.

No offense taken San Diego has wonderful food; sea food, Mexican food, Asian food and others but southern food ...well we have it but you really have to look.
Yes I agree Peach cobbler should have more of a flaky crust with it. That was too hard.
@@brendahowell6796 Common mistake, they "nuked" (Microwaved) it cold from storage, just like warming toast in a microwave. The syrup for the pancakes was heated to have warm syrup, that’s why it looked like water when poured out but it is thicker if it’s not warmed up. It tastes good to have warm syrup than cold.

I love watching British folks trying American food. Cracker barrel is as American as it gets
Thanks for sharing! It's always fun to see people from different countries experiencing new foods!
Thank you for sharing your food experiences and recommendations! I appreciate the insight into southern cuisine.
I’ve always found that most people like their mom’s meatloaf much better than anyone else’s. There are so many ways to make it. My mom always used hamburger and pork sausage together in hers. Miss it!
Absolutely noone eats pancakes without butter on them, before the syrup of course. Pancakes are also good with fruit jam.
That's what I'm sayin'. However I have seen more than one video where Brits try them for the first time and don't use butter. Weird.
Cornmeal is ground coarse... So it's supposed to be grainy. Some people add a lot of flour to the cornmeal so it's less grainy. It's a personal preference on the texture.
Thanks for sharing your insights on cornmeal and the textures!
Thank you for sharing your family's cornbread traditions with us. It sounds wonderful!
Cornbread and collard greens is great some people just eat that
Chicken fried steak with gravy is an American labor of love...had you come here to America in the 1970s in some time machine, at many places that would have been really tough and barely edible because if not done with SKILLS, cube steak is not tender.
But these days, 50 years later, many Americans have now mastered it, and it is Delicious, as you've discovered.❤
It's amazing how recipes evolve over time, right? Thank you for sharing that information
It's pretty good. Certainly far better than Waffle House.

Okra! It's definitely a unique vegetable. We didn't know it was in Gumbo. Thanks for the information
@@kencramer1697 I never knew how to make mushroom gravy - and I love it - didn't know it was so simple - thanks for the info!
I can only handle okra if it has been pickled
Meatloaf is good with a nice brown gravy too. But the real secret is making a meatloaf sandwich the next day, after its been in the fridge. Cover the meatloaf with black pepper, a bit of salt, and put mayo on the bread.
Thanks for sharing this amazing meatloaf sandwich hack! Can't wait to try it.

If you make it up to Oregon or Washington, ESPECIALLY on the coast, you have to try clam chowder & some salmon…YUM!!! Everyone says MO’s clam chowder is the best.. the original restaurant is in Newport Oregon.
Thanks for the advice! We would love to visit Oregon or Washington in the future! We will add this to the list for foods to try when we get there.
Nope its in Bodega Bay in Sonoma County California.

I despise okra. Growing up I tolerated it in gumbo because it was always in gumbo but yuck. You have to look at cornbread as a conveyance for a great many things savory and sweet. If there's dipping sauce then you dip it and you don't drizzle it on everything else within the main basket.

It certainly is! We have become slightly obsessed with biscuits
I put butter and syrup on my pancake folded in the shape of a taco with bacon in the middle. So good please try it.
Thanks for the information! We tried another version of cobbler (plus other desserts) in Nashville and we will upload the video on Saturday.
Cracker Barrel is great when you're on a road trip because it's standardized food that isn't "fast" food. I adore their breakfast.
I agree, Cracker Barrel seems like it would be a reliable choice for road trips. We would love to go back for the breakfast menu!
Thank you so much for your kind words! Let us know if there is anywhere else we should try in the future?
When I go there I always get the biscuits and gravy and the hash brown casserole... those are my favorites!!
Thanks for sharing! We loved the biscuits and gravy and the hash brown casserole too!
You guys are hilarious!!!😂
Thank you so much! We're glad you find our content funny!
Cracker Barrel nails breakfast, each time, every time. As a snack, I could probably eat a gallon of their fried okra!
We were very surprised how good it was! We would love to go back and just do the breakfast menu.
You should try the cornbread smothered with butter and maple syrup too. Chicken is finger food!
That sounds delicious! next time we will for sure.
Corn bread goes great with honey.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Experimenting with food and finding what you like is the right way, too many Americans have forgotten this.
And grainy cornbread just means it has courser cornmeal in it, I personally prefer the grainy ones.
Absolutely, experimenting with food can lead to some amazing discoveries! Thanks for watching!
You guys should try an Arnold palmer for your drink but tell them 25% lemonade 75% sweet tea
That sounds good! we will try and find one soon.
OMG yes! Especially in the south though, because it'll be mixed with sweet tea.
Me sitting here wanting that fried okra so badly!! Absolutely love it!
We will save it for you next time! Thanks for watching
@@thebritstryLet me know when!🤣
Great video!
I prefer my cornbread with butter and honey. It's also great with chili!!
Thank sounds great! we will have to try it with Chili in the future
You made it to Nashville - how great! I have never been to a Cracker Barrel but everything looked great! Looks like good old comfort food. I've never had okra and I too am hesitant to try it because of the sliminess. Another great video Nicola and Andrew! Cheers!
Thank you so much for your kind words! The food was really good, except the okra, this version wasn't for us.
Loved your video. Thank you so much for uploading. 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for your support! It means a lot to us!
What a great couple, love to watch their videos.
Thank you so much! We really appreciate you watching and supporting us! ❤️
Lmao “it’s a vegetable. And it’s green!” 😂 that was so great.
It looks like Nicola remembered to tell them to cut the tomatoes on the pancakes ! Hahahahahaaaaaa!
Lol!
That hash brown casserole is so easy to make! It’s 5 ingredients
Bag of hash browns
Can of cream of chicken
16 oz sour cream
Butter
And shredded cheddar Cheese I like to add a cup of hot pepper shredded cheese mix and bake
Thanks for the recipe advice! We will try an make some soon
As a kid, I'd have Cracker Barrel on early mornings with my grandparents after helping grandpa on the farm.
lol I’m sitting here asking where the pepper was for the chicken and dumplings… if you like those you need homemade chicken and dumplings.. they are cheap and easy
Thank you for the suggestion! We'll make sure to try making homemade chicken and dumplings soon.
it's America, it's your food. do what you like! FREEDOM!
Thanks for watching
This was a fun watch. Glad you enjoyed most everything. Okra is definitely a love or hate kinda veggie!
We definitely are not loving Okra yet…
If you do jelly with corn bread try it with apple.
Thanks for the suggestion! we didn't know about the apple butter. Next time we would love to try that
Hey I really really really truly enjoy your videos please keep them coming so I can watch more!
Thank you! this comment has made our day! we will do!
Wow, Thank you so much for your detailed response. We never knew there was so much to learn about comfort food! Thanks for the info!
