Not all of their covers are done so theatrically, but they have kind of been nicknamed the ‘Theater Kids of Acapella” - based on a comment by a fan. I hope you will continue reacting to them. For more during this Christmas, I highly suggest their cover of “Christmas Don’t Be Late” (The Chipmunks Song) It’s done by the current line-up. For a more simplified theatrical experience, my favorite Christmas song of theirs is “The First Noel”, which is an even earlier line-up than this one. It is sung ‘straighter’. So you can hear their regular voices.

Welcome to VoicePlay and Geoff Castelucci! They are truly the best acapella group because of their creativity and theatrics not to mention their incredible voices. Fun fact, Eli (pronounced Elly) the bald tenor actually voiced Santa Claus. The low note at the end is called a subharmonic and Geoff is amazing at hitting them. He has his own channel as well! Hope to see you react to more of these guys, if you love theatrics you will really enjoy them! ❤

If you want to hear each of their beautiful voices, a great one to listen to is "I Can't Make You Love Me." Sad, but so beautiful. "Performed" but in a totally different way.

You were right, Geoff is the bass with the awesome range who sang lead on this one. His brother-in-law is the person who played Santa, but the voice of Santa was recorded by the member of the group dressed in red - Eli (pronounced to rhyme with jelly). Their lineup has changed some over the years, and they're good about crediting everyone in their video descriptions if you ever need a refresher on the names!
Welcome to the Voiceplay (and solo Geoff, hopefully 😉) rabbit hole, and enjoy the ride!

Hey! Quick! Pick up that JAW!! LOL We LOVE watching someone react to VoicePlay for the first time, no matter which song it might be. THIS is great for showing off their theatrical style AND their amazing voices. Yes, it's Geoff. His range is among the greatest of professional vocalists. Your reaction at the end when he drops to the LOW note (it's an E1 if you know the keyboard) was priceless!! Great reaction! I hope it motivates you to check out more of their stuff!

I love when Geoff's voice went to the basement Koality's jaw went looking for him there. For the next Voiceplay reaction might I recommend Ding Dong, or In the Hall of the Mountain King.

  • @CynicalTesuji
    @CynicalTesuji 5 месяцев назад +26

Yeah, that descent at the end is pretty iconic for VoicePlay and Geoff. He goes from a B4 all the way down to an E1 subharmonic; it's a spectacular drop in such a short space of time. That's one thing that's super-impressive about Geoff's voice, range aside- he has remarkable vocal agility, and thinks nothing of bouncing up or down multiple octaves in a short span of notes. Now, that said, pretty much all the guys in VoicePlay have their own monstrous capabilities, but Geoff's is definitely the kind that usually reaches out and grabs people right off the bat. But you'll soon learn about Eli's rock grit, and his voice's utter elasticity. Or you'll be taken in by J. None's buttery vocals and incredible runs. Or Layne's ridiculous beatboxing skills, coupled with his surprisingly broad vocal range, and his off-the-charts creativity. And then you'll learn how they are independent, and do all the vocal arrangements, filming, lighting, SFX, editing- pretty much everything except for their makeup and some camera work- on their own. And then, you'll be hooked, just like the rest of us.
Enjoy the rabbithole! And Geoff's solo one as well, once you get around to it (we all know you'll get there eventually).

This vid featured VP's 2017-2020 lineup.
    Earl Elkins, high tenor.
    Eli Jacobsen, 2nd tenor.
    JNone, baritone.
    Geoff Castellucci, bass.
Layne Stein, percussion and backup baritone.
If you want to hear that lineup in just their normal voices instead of character voices, try Tennessee Whiskey, or Can't Help Falling in Love.
Earl left in 2020. JNone left in 2021 (joined the Navy), but comes back as a guest when available.
They added Cesar DeLaRosa as a permanent member.
There's still one spot open, so basically all their vids from 2020 on have a guest artist in the fifth spot.
Geoff also started doing solo multitrack music vids on his personal YT channel in 2020.
    Have fun.

  • @Robert_Herring

Welcome to the wonderful world of Voiceplay. This is typical of their videos, though the newer ones have gotten even more elaborate when appropriate. There are a few changes in the line up, as Earl, high pitched bearded guy, and J. None, black guy, are no longer in the group. Eli, pronounced L-E, and Layne are still in, and the newest permanent member is Cesar, with the other spot in the quintet filled in with a revolving set of guests. I recommend checking out one where there are fewer character voices, because their normal singing voices are spectacular. "The Dragonborn Comes" is a good one, but the costumes and set is even more elaborate. Geoff has only increased his range since doing this one, he's up to about a 5 octave range. He goes both lower and higher. Of his personal channel stuff, I recommend his cover of "Blackbird". Wonderful arrangement.

  • @steveray9655

Basically, Pentatonix are the "Popular Kids", Home Free are the "Country Boys", and Voiceplay are the "Theater Kids". I would also recommend Voiceplay's cover of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch", featuring Adriana Arellano, who (if memory serves) was 15 years old when they did that song together. Voiceplay also did a cover of "Just Sing", which is a HUGE collaboration with many other a capella artists. If/when you do that one, be sure to turn on the captions. They included information about who everyone is, as well as some rather snarky remarks. 😉 One of Geoff's "solo" covers is "Mele Kalikimaka" featuring The American Sirens. Definitely worth checking out for Christmas.

Hoist the colors, The Dragon born comes, are also costumed performances, but not necessarily theatrical voice-wise. Welcome to Voiceplay-land! 🙂
First of all, I just subscribed in anticipation of more VP... And to enjoy when you'll discover Geoff's solo channel 😇.
They are an "old" group, having started in 1997 as "4:2:5". And of course they had lots of changes in their lineup throughout the years. For more information about that, here's a video by Huldra Draco explaining it from the beginning: ruclips.net/video/R6WxCwHnebI/видео.html 🙂
I second the suggestions of trying their version of "The Dragonborn Comes - Skyrim". I'm no gamer, but heck, that song is something else. 🙂
And then I'd suggest some more "melodic" stuff (either "Radiohead's "Creep", or "True Colors", or Simon&Garfunkel's "Bridge over troubled waters", or "I can't make you love me"...), and their latest Sea Shanty, "Drunken Sailor", to see how they took an old, frankly boring song and made it a totally different thing 😅.
But you just can't go wrong with them.
You could also try their version of "Just sing!", which requires captions, as there are plenty of guests and the captions will tell you who they are and what's their relationship with Voiceplay. 🙂
And the hilarious "Survivor - Zombies vs Hillbillies", where the zombies are Voiceplay and the Hillbillies are Home Free. They were together in the 4th season of "Sing Off", and are friends since. 😁
For Geoff's solo channel... I'd start with "Far over the Misty Mountains cold", from "The Hobbit - An unexpected journey", followed by "I see fire", from "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug". Same Dwarves (all four are Geoff... although many people thought they were 4 different people, "maybe related, like brothers?" 😅. But very different arrangements and both are just incredible. 🙂
See you next time, and enjoy the ride! :😅

Welcome to the Voiceplay rabbit hole. They have a lot of amazing covers, they're not always strictly a cappella since they sometimes use distortion on their voices and even other stuff (no spoilers) but I don't care, they're amazing. They're all pretty cool at their own things, Layne (the guy on the right playing the dawg with the glowing nose) is an amazing beatboxer and a great singer, maybe he has other awesome skills, who knows. Eli (the bald guy) has such a powerful tenor rock belting range, he can virtually sing any lead part. Geoff, the long-haired guy playing Oogie Boogie, has an insane range from contrabass to high tenor, he goes like a fifth lower than the last note in some covers using subharmonics and has some crazy high runs at other times, sometimes in the same verse. He actually has his own channel on RUclips where he does solo or 4-part covers and doesn't limit himself to only a cappella. I suggest watching his "Sixteen Tons" cover, "Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold", and others, as well as their other group covers like "Queen in 5 minutes" (they can go into creative storytelling as well), "Enemy", "Valhalla Calling", "My Mother Told Me", "Nothing Else Matters", basically anything they put out will amaze you. I hope to see a bunch of reactions to these guys :)

  • @jonadabtheunsightly
    @jonadabtheunsightly 5 месяцев назад +3

Yeah, when Geoff dropped into that last subharmonic, you looked like your jaw became unhinged and fell loose. Which is a fairly typical reaction.
This song is mostly the Geoff show, because of the nature of the song (which is packed end to end with first-person references to the character that he is portraying). Hellfire is also like that, for similar reasons. But usually, VP passes the lead around a lot more. Everyone in the group is extremely talented, and they also have a particular knack for featuring amazingly talented guest artists on a regular basis.
As far as identifying their "true voices", that's always going to have some asterisks on it, because they're all voice actors at one level or another. Eli (short for Eleazar) Jacobson, who portrayed Lock in this video, and also recorded the voice of Sandy Claws, is a particularly accomplished voice actor and a fantastic rock tenor, but they can all do multiple voices. J-None (costumed as Barrel here) currently sings bass for the US Navy but can also sing tenor-1. Layne, the vocal percussionist, typically sings tenor (when he isn't doing drumbeats) but can also sing bass. And so on.

Welcome to the rabbit-hole of VP (and Geoff!) - it's so much fun to see someone discovering them for the first time! They are totally independent, and do almost everything themselves, from arrangements (Geoff and Layne, the beatboxer do most of them, although Eli (Ell-ee, the bald dude) has done some and is due to do more going forward, to filming, video editing, initial audio mix, makeup, sets - although they send the audio out for final mixing by Ed Boyer (who does most of the top acapella groups, including Home Free), and get assistance for more involved makeup/prosthetics, extra camera operators as needed - all funded by their Patreon members! For the holiday season, try 'You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch'..! 😊😊

Geoff (and you said his name perfectly!) has a documented 5 octave range in videos from VoicePlay and himself. A0 (subharmoni) to A#5 (rock-tenor scream singing, but still....). His ability to integrate subharmonics almost seamlessly while singing is something he's spent a lot of time and effort practicing and he's gotten much better with over the past few years.
Geoff has a solo channel that he started during the lockdown when VoicePlay couldn't tour or play gigs. It includes not only video covers (The Bare Necessities was his first), but instructional videos, narrations, and a few more personal videos - he has a video with his wife, who is his (and VoicePlay's) production manager, but was a singer herself until she developed a condition that made her not only deaf, but messed up the sounds she can still hear, and it's both heartwarming and a tear-jerker.
Geoff's solo videos usually include several "clones" of himself that sing the harmonies with him, and he also creates the instrumentals that go along with his solo videos (they're not a cappella - he saves that for VoicePlay). While he's an accomplished pianist, the other instruments he uses are created using plug-ins for his keyboard.
Recommendations: Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold (his most popular video), Blackbird (good example of his range), I See Fire (excellent example of his range), Sound of Silence, Shenandoah.

You mentioned you really enjoy a cappella performed in appropriate costume. Hold that thought. I don't know if you are familiar with the a cappella group Voctave, a larger ensemble (no beat boxer), but they perform Disney Heroes and Villains which I think you'd really enjoy. Geoff has a 5+ octave range.
Santa was played by Geoff's wife's brother. She is Production Manager for both Geoff and Voiceplay.
They also did this live on stage when they were touring.
The bald one in red did Santa's voice. That's Eli (like jelly) Jacobson.
Beatboxer on the right is Layne Stein.
Bearded guy is earl Elkins Jr (Tenor). He left in 2020 for personal reasons. He founded Voiceplay with Geoff, Layne and 2 others in 1997 under the name 4:2:Five.
The black guy is J None (baritone). He left in 2021 to sing with the US Navy. He comes back as often as he can to sing with them.
Current members are Geoff, Layne, Eli and Cesar De La Rosa (baritone). They collaborate with various artists for the 5th.
So depending on the year and song is who is in it.
Friday Voiceplay and Geoff released their new Christmas videos.
Voiceplay... Jingle Bell Rock - Mean Girls. They are both on stage and in the audience with family members.
Geoff Castelucci.... Blue Christmas. Cameo by his wife Kathy.
    My favorite live videos....
    Road Trip. Elvira. Chicken Song.
Welcome to the Voiceplay/Geoff Castelucci rabbit holes 🐰🐰

Love me some VP! I'll hold off on too many suggestions (I see the comments are crowded with them already) but I'll add my voice to those asking for the My Mother Told Me/Valhalla Calling pair. Enjoy!

This version of VoicePlay is not the current version. Two of them are no longer with the group, J. None and Earl.
The three that are still involved are Geoff, Layne (beatboxer) and Eli, which is pronounced like jelly without the J. He’s the bald one. Layne was the one kinda by himself off to the right side.
Earl, who quit performing, is the one with the beard and J, who is now in the Navy, was to the far left of the screen. They were the two in view for the line “a rolly poly Santa Clause”. Layne came in on “to add a little spice”.

Since you're just now coming onto the VoicePlay scene, you'll probably never get caught up to all of their fabulous covers. They're called the "theater kids of a Capella" for a reason. Plus, if you like Geoff's 4-5 octave range, you'll love most of his personal covers on his own channel as well. Enjoy this rabbit hole.

For another couple of songs from 'Nightmare', check out the one teased at the end, 'This is Halloween', and from Geoff's channel his cover of 'Jack's Lament'. For another theatrical one, you'll love 'Friends on the Other Side' from Disney's Princess and the Frog, and their Little Mermaid Medley (I think you'll like their casting of Ursula). Also 'Hoist the Colors' from Pirates of the Caribbean 3 is excellent. For some less-theatrical ones, check out their cover of Metallica's 'Nothing Else Matters' and 'Whiskey in the Jar', or on Geoff's channel, 'Blackbird', 'High and Dry', or 'Sixteen Tons'.

I am going to subscribe in the hopes that you are going to cover more of my very favorite group and my favorite solo artist which is Geoff Castellucci. If you love the Nightmare before Christmas you should make sure and set aside some time for next October. They did four songs including this from the movie and in 2023 Geoff did spectacular solo of Jack’s Lament. It was always my favorite song from the movie and not only were the vocals amazing but his acting ability. Halloween is their favorite season and they release a spooky season video each year. In the last three years, since Covid stopped them from touring, Geoff has also been releasing videos including one for for October.
They are based in Orlando and all of the members have performed at Disney and or Universal Studios so are very comfortable with theatrics. I know that a couple of them are voice actors as well, which is evident in their ability to sing while still in character which is not an easy thing.
They are completely self produced - no record label and no sponsorship other than their patrons. In the past the bass singer and the beat boxer did 95% of the arrangements. Whoever is responsible for the arrangement also is responsible for the entire production, including sourcing out venues and costumes, come up with a storyboard if it’s a dramatic piece, directing and editing the video, doing the initial sound edit. The only real help they get from outsiders is their final audio mix is done by Ed Boyer who also does the mixing for Pentatonix and other a cappella groups. In addition if they have elaborate make up they use a friend of theirs who worked at Universal Studios for a long time. They do also source out a steady cam operator if necessary. Otherwise it’s all in-house.
The bald rock tenor, Eli Jacobsen, is the tech wizard, responsible for lighting and in recent years their digital backgrounds. He’s also co-arranged some of the pieces and arranged two on his own. His arrangement of Radiohead’s Creep is absolutely heartbreaking. And he will be working into the rotation for the arrangements in the future!😊

If you want to hear them with no theatrics, check out some of their older work so you get a better idea of their true voices (2 of the members here are no longer with the group). Bridge Over Troubled Waters, I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You, Warriors (from Imagine Dragon), Daddy Sang Bass. Their newer work has a new member and guests and is just as amazing - Valhalla Calling, Hoist the Colors.
