Geoff and Layne generally take turns arranging and whoever arranges usually decides the video. Occasionally Eli does arranging but he always does lighting

This piece knocked everybody's socks off. One reactor forgot he was only appropriately dressed from the waist up and walked of in his boxers. Geoff and Voiceplay put the arrangement details in the listing everytime. It is amazing the amount of skill they have on the production side in addition to the musical talent. Valhalla Calling was Layne's (beatboxer) arrangement, their most recent, Drunken Sailor,is Geoff's. They did Creep a couple of months ago, that one is Eli's (elly), the bald tenor.
Jose was not supposed to be the featured artist in this, but Covid travel restrictions prevented the original choice from being there. Eli had already recorded the part sung by Jose, but the other part was outside of Jose's range when he stepped in at the last minute. So Eli recorded that rock scary tenor part instead.

Chills... Always. On Geoff's channel he has a video about his wife Kathy - who is a performer herself, and her losing her hearing. It's pretty fascinating how they've adjusted to it. Btw.. It was Geoff's 43rd birthday yesterday.

    Awesome reaction Sebs.
Yes. Voiceplay is in Orlando. They usually film at Pattycake Productions located in the Oviedo Mall. Owned by Layne (beatboxer) and former member Tony. They have a lot of original Disney related videos on their channel. They write, direct, produce, etc all. Except the makeup and audio mixing.
I don't know if you saw it yet but Voiceplay's latest video is..... Drunken Sailor. It is absolutely fun to watch.
Geoff Castellucci's latest is.... Folsom Prison Blues.

Ed Boyer (the audio mixer) is a pretty well known audio engineer, at least in a cappella circles. He does the final mixing for VoicePlay and Geoff Castellucci's solo videos, as well as for Home Free and Pentatonix. So if you're listening to any of the big 3 a cappella groups on RUclips, you're most likely listening to an Ed Boyer mix.

Watched your reaction again. I always check the credits, and it's almost always just them.
Layne owns Pattycake Productions with their former baritone, Tony Wakim. They frequently use that studio now for their covers.
I also keep the closed captions on for both Geoff and Voiceplay. When they can, they throw a little humor in the captions, especially Geoff on his solos.
His captions are frequently very descriptive. His wife, Kathy, has profound hearing loss, and he is very sensitive to the hearing impaired.
They have worked Disney and Universal in the past, but are totally independent. They are able to take creative risks that some other artists are not willing to do.
    Great reaction, man!

This was my first VoicePlay video, 28 months ago. I have a happy home down this rabbit hole. Geoff did this project from arranging, staging, video/camera work, costuming, props, makeup and/or prosthetics, etc. Eli does the lighting and CG, Green screens, programs, backgrounds, etc. Layne does his project next and follows the same pattern. Kathy is theproduction manager, she used to sing but lost her hearing (see Geoff and Kathy's video on how they've adjusted). Recently, Eli did Creep (RadioHead) and it was superb. (a few yrs back he did Eleanor Rigby). He will be coming on in the rotation so look for his work in VoicePlay in addition to computer work and lighting. Cesar's project is an arranging video by the 4 guys. Everyone has there own die by it on phone, gaming, or regular and roll them to see who gets to name the song and in what order the arrangement loop is done while you watch. It's Loop and they have completed Loop #1 Choose Your Fighter -Cesar's choice (Barbie movie) and Loop #2 Return to Sender - Geoff's won the die (Elvis). It's fun and not long.

They're amazing - they take turns to do arrangements. They do everything really - I think they prefer having artistic freedom - and it shows. They never let us down. Can't wait for more Voiceplay! Thanks for the review. I enjoy your type of reviewing/reactions. 🎈

  • @Aurora-cv5to
    @Aurora-cv5to 11 месяцев назад +4

Yes, they are in Orlando. All of them have worked for Disney or Universal. Geoff (Jeff) and Layne, the beatbox, pretty much split the arrangements, 50/50. Whoever does the arrangement is usually responsible for everything else - except - for the last couple of years Eli has been doing lights and he also creates backdrops when needed (using Unreal Engine). Layne commented in an interview with Elizabeth (Charismatic Voice) that they regard each performance as an art piece - and it shows. Ed Boyer does the vocal editing for all of the top acapella groups. The primary edit, though, is done by the arranger, with the finish work going to Ed. Kathy Castellucci is the production manager for almost all of VoicePlay and Geoff's performances. Their videos have a ton of sophistication and polish, but it's as home grown as you can get.
Even the studio they most often record at, PattyCake Productions, is owned by Layne and Tony (a former member of VP).

Loved your expression as you were just absorbing it all....They do all their own arrangements, production, lighting, everything. Geoff and Layne do the most arrangements and Eli (pronounced like Jelly) did the arrangement of Creep (about a month ago). And, yeah still get chills after watching it 20 or 30 times. Looking forward to your next one!! Can't wait!!

Jose Rosario Jr. has done some Broadway roles through Broadway+, does some voice acting, and has been on the cruise entertainment circuits and in similar jobs in and around Orlando. He was in the OG acapella group Rockapella for a few years, so he's a natural fit with the theater kids of acapella.

That's the danger of Voiceplay - Pirate video? Now you want to be a pirate. Viking video? Now you want to be a Viking!
Also, too many bass singers go for the low notes, but can't keep the clarity (?). Geoff's hard work shows every time.

Yeah, a lot of basses are all wrapped up in going as low as possible with no regards to if it’s quality or not. There’s a RUclipsr like that who makes a big deal out of being a super deep bass but he sounds like the bass version of fingernails on a chalkboard , you can’t understand half the words, and he’s off pitch as much as he’s on.
Geoff’s voice sounds like a fluffy, warm blanket on a freezing winter night feels. My ears just want to wrap up and snuggle down into his rumbles. And you can understand every word he sings, no matter how low he is.
Eli straight up gives me shivers when he belts. Cesar’s gift is that he can make me feel whatever he’s singing about. I can’t listen to that man sing sad things. “I Can’t Make You Love Me” straight up made me ugly cry.
As to them doing it themselves: yup. That started out of necessity when they were starting out, but now I think they do it as much to have complete artistic control as anything.
Eli is really shining on the production side, IMO. He’s designing and programming the lighting, but beyond that, he’s also learning how to program in Unreal Engine to do their own CGI. Now that’s next level. If you’re a gamer, you prob know what that is, if not…Unreal Engine is used to build video games. It’s high end graphics.
Eli’s first CGI was the background in their video for Enemy. He more recently did all the backgrounds in their cover of Valhalla Calling.
Also: saw you enjoyed Phil Collins’ In The Air Tonight. VP dropped a fantastic cover of that one here recently. You may enjoy that one too.

They are in Orlando area, Geoff useed to play Frankenstein's Monster in the now removed "Beetlejuice's Rock n' roll Graveyard Review" at Universal Studios. I live in Florida and have been an annual passholder for 18 years, that was my favorite thing to go see, look it up and react to one of the recorded videos of it, its awesome. I hate that they replaced it for the piece of trash Fast and Furious ride.

This remains one of my favorites. To me it’s everything that opera ought to be: artistry, drama and incredible vocals.
Geoff can also sing In their productions, because both Layne and Eli can cover the bassline while he’s singing if necessary. Their prior baritone J Nunn was also able to cover that when they performed on stage.
José was a last-minute substitute for the artist that they had slated to perform with them. He couldn’t travel because of Covid restrictions. The original artist was supposed to be singing the high tenor parts, but José couldn’t quite reach those notes. So Eli had to re-record the high tenor part and José sang his lines. Good thing they are adoptable.
If you like Pirates, they also have done two minis: the YoHo (It’s a pirate’s life for me) song from the Disney Pirates of the Caribbean ride and also a longer mini of the Wellerman.
Recently they released an absolutely hilarious version Drunken Sailor, again with José and a guest who plays the drunken sailor. He is a friend of Geoff and Layne from back when they were still in high school. He performed with them occasionally when they were still the group called 4:2:Five prior to renaming themselves VoicePlay. He is in two shorts as well- the Candy Crush song and 500 Miles. He plays the strange mall stalker. He’s got his own kind of silliness to bring to their very special “brand of dumb” as they like to say.
Oh, and you are missing out if you are not wearing headphones or at least earbuds. It’s a whole different experience.
As for your Orlando trip, they don’t often perform live anymore because they are so busy. However Cesar, the man with the blinded eye, performs often at Epcot with EJ Cardona and his wife Lindsay as the core members of a couple of different groups. EJ is one of the principals of the a cappella choral group Voctave . His wife Lindsay is in the a cappella trio American Sirens. You can find their group, and possibly their schedule, under Hawkmoon Creative. One of the groups they perform in is Element and another one is Vibe. It appears that the videos are shot with cell phones but it’s still a really cool way to see a totally different side of the performers.

Awesome reaction, Sebs! These guys do operate out of Atlanta, and they do a lot of work with Disney, but I don’t know if they’re actually doing a lot of live concerts (they had to step back from that during COVID, so they upped their game on the videos, and Ithink this reaches a much wider audience (folks like me in Colorado) so I’m glad it’s still a focus for them.

(Orlando, not Atlanta.) While VP does some private/corporate events locally (and is on the bill with the band Chicago in Atlantic City in November), post-Covid they really aren't touring, and have been focusing on their videos. Cesar de la Rosa (in the white shirt with the scary milky eye in this video) does sing with other bands that do perform at Disney (typically at Epcot, I think).
