Indeed, it was one of those cards that was on every deal...pretty much like the loxodon warhammer now that I think about it, this card was hitting hard in mirrodin drafts.
Go easy on him, he doesn't play Magic.
Shit, Troll Ascetic was a thing in the Mirrodin block. I remember the anti-affinity green stompy with Troll Ascetic, Sword of Fire and artifact hate (viridian zealot, viridian shaman...). Kids today cannot understand that back in the day mass removal was not very common and in that environment, Troll ascetic was a beast

So I know the fact that old product not being warped is important, but one of the small things I appreciated about packs from back then were that when you opened them even at casual speed, the pack wrappers didn't just tear like paper and create a mess everywhere. I liked the fact that the pack wrappers used to be thicker and higher quality for obvious reasons.
I started with Tenth Edition and I still love it! I remember the fat pack had an angel v Demons box with awesome art
Wow the goblin lores are 26$ each. The foil is 219$. Crucible of worlds was the most expensive rare at around 75$ then the green muse and the doubling cube. The black undead rare is indeed worth 15$ and squee is from Mercadian masques and used to be a 20$ card it’s worth 3$ in this set. Pitching needle is 4$ and the pain lands are all 3$-9$ with foils being 15-65$ each so you were spot on the prices Rudy. Great video and thanks for the opening...
10th edition was my favourite core set... bought dozens of boosters back then, sometimes ran out of grocery money. I was just lamenting that I never pulled a Goblin Lore back then, and you cracked one on the first pack. Thanks for the salt, Rudy.

Remember, 10th edition RARE foils have no flavor texts, thats why the are more sought after and pretty expensive!

I went to the overnight prerelease for this set back when Neutral Ground still existed at their original location. There may not be a crazy amount of value but there is such good playability to the packs, it was probably the most fun drafting set I ever played with

Had one of my favorite draft decks ever in 10th Edition. All kinds of counter, card-draw, bounce, and a Mobilization to delay things... and a Beacon of Immortality as my win condition. Eventually, I could cast it every turn and double my life total until my opponent decked. Won a game with hundreds of thousands of life. Went 1-2, but it was a blast. :)

Love old box's like Revised they were the best you could get what I call the Ultimate pack which was stacked with bonkers cards but you don't see that often very often now, still got to try that luck.

Totally oblivious here, but still .. are the foils added to each booster pack, i.e. containing one more card? Couldn't you just weigh each pack and only open the heavies, while selling the lights (unopened) on ebay or something?
Troll Ascetic was pretty huge in it's day, from Mirrodin. One of the first cards to have hexproof and be essentially indestructable at the same time.

Brings back memories. Tenth Edition was my first booster box. Only payed $3.99 for the whole thing via false advertising implications! Hence why they're individually wrapped in cardboard nowadays. My 4 dollar booster box...
And yes, I pulled 2 Crucible of Worlds.
This made me really miss core-sets! Not to mention the quality of the physical product and art :-D

Never played Magic in my life or understand what is being said 90% of the time but I keep coming back to watch Rudy get a kick out of opening packs! (EDIT: Would love to start playing though - Where do I start?)
Trevor Harwood you sound exactly like me a few months ago. Somehow I came upon Rudy’s videos while going down a YT rabbit hole. It inspired me to check it out after thinking MTG was dumb my entire life. First thing I did was download the Magic Duels app on my iPhone. It taught me the rules and made me realize I like the game, it’s like extremely complicated chess mixed with poker. Then I just started buying some packs and read/watched a lot of info about deck building and what the pros were doing. Now I’m immersed. I’ve spent a ton of money on building a modern deck that isn’t very good because I didn’t understand the formats very well. Once I realized that I built a good standard deck on a budget. Also, play on MTG online. Much less intimidating than going to play live (I still haven’t done that but really want to) and cards are cheaper.
Every once in a while, I think around the time a new set comes out, so about this time, stores will have what I think is called an open house day. You can look for it in the magicthegathering.com website. They have free decks to give you to teach you how to play with. I've never been to one since I've been playing a long time, but I would imagine that's a good place to start.
Also, like the other guy said, if magic duels still exists that will help you learn too.

the diversity of art in these old sets is why I miss them and can't stand the new stuff. the art on each card just pops, and no two cards are alike.
Is the foil card a 16th card in these packs, anyone know?
If it is, cant you weigh the pack with a sensitive scale and tell if theres 16 cards in it vs 15?

I played back in 1994 to about 97-98... since when do reprints and the core set have a black border? 4th edition, etc had that crappy white border on reprints... unless, I don't remember right. LOL
I enjoy coming here to hear your corny jokes and box openings when I need a fix myself, and can't afford to buy all sorts of boxes LOL. Good stuff Rudy.

So in this set, foils are an extra card? Does that mean you can weigh the packs and open just the ones that contain foil?
No, the foil replaces one of the normal commons. If you count the cards he opens in the packs at 4:43 or 7:39 for instance, you see there's only 9 commons at the front of the pack instead of 10
