This video just popped up in my feed, and when Rudy said "we'll never see a return to kamigawa ever" I thought he was being ironic, not realizing this was released over 4 years ago.
Kamigawa will always be my favorite block. The story was amazing and the cards were very unique. Dont care what the masses say there will always be a soft spot.
I just started playing Magic like 4 months ago, and am enjoying it so far. Being born as a half Japanese/American, I love the Japanese theme, and the art style.
american is not a race its a nationality. people need to stop using the word american as being white or black. and yes I am assuming that is what you meant
You are correct, American is not a race. In Japan, they dont call you white, they call you American. I live and work in Japan, so it just slipped. My bad.
okay I understand a bit then. The only reason why this triggered me is because I work and live in South Korea and if I try to tell some people I am american (My ethnicity is like 75% asian ancestry and 25% white ancestry but I look more asian) then they won't believe me or look at me weird because the perception is that Americans can only be of only white or maybe black ethnicities
Actually Rudy, Sakura-Tribe Scout is not only a pretty good card, but due to it's play in recent Amulet Titan decks in modern you can sell them for 2 bucks-a-piece. Also on the financial side of things, that box was pretty flippin' great!
At 396 C a box and 55 commons (and not yet any land on the C sheet, afaict) you should get about 7 of each common, give or take the variance. Variance on commons is gonna even out pretty quickly at the booster box level already. 55R, 55U, 55C, sounds very much like they were using factories outside Belgium at the time that were not capable of 121 card sheets, only 110 card sheets. These days the sheets for rares at least pretty much universally work out to 121 (15 R1 mythics and 57 R2 rares), so the factories outside Belgium must have been upgraded. That, or they’re printing all the rares in Belgium and only using the overseas plants for U and C?
that old school foiling is beautiful, I have a foil simic basilisk I found in my collection and the foiling on each of the eyes and the head just looks fantastic. I compared it to some Dominaria foils I got, makes them look terrible.
That's what I used to think but as far as lore goes the story of the block had a pretty definitive ending and at least as I am concerned I would prefer it to stay that way rather than having the ubiquitous Super Friends come to an interesting place and taking centerstage with their forgettable blandness; and as far as the game itself is related I don't trust them enough to think they will fix what did not worked the first time while at the same time keeping the good and unique aspects that it had, not unless Dr. Garfield is involved in the design which only happens every few years.
Love Kamigawa too. What you say here is definitely true, I'd also like a return on Kamigawa, but not with the Gatewatch/Bolas story which I hope will soon come to an end. An Umezawa's return on their original plane could be interesting.
Rok mare mtg.gamepedia.com/Rabiah_Scale#cite_note-OrigRabiahPost-3 1-10 (1 most likely to return, 10 not a chance in hell) it's a 8 and that make me sad.
Kamigawa block was one of my favorite blocks in MtG. I actually made decks AND sets with all the boxes I bought. I also loved the original Ravnica block
I loved the Kamigawa block (it still stands as my favorite block), I bought the 75 card tournament packs (which I still have 4 of). Loving the video Rudy!
I think I still have the prerelease cards from that block. It came right after arcbound/disciple of the vault combo and maybe some mindslaver shenanigans. Two moments I remember from the prerelease's... Guy fogged me out using akki coalflinger to fog my normal damage step, played wrong and judge ruled wrong. Next having Meloku, Clouded Mirror and opponent does too, yet his made 2/2's while mine made 1/1's lmao play cards as they read, even if know it's a misprint, was ruling by judge on that one. Good times
The art is AMAZING to me! All of these cards look awesome! I kind of really hope we do end up revisiting Kamigawa. I remember being a kid and seeing the boosters at Walmart, thinking they looked really cool. It was just a little before I started collecting.
Kamigawa was always my favorite, it was the first block I bought when I started playing and it was the first novels I read when I got into the lore. Nostalgic favorite, but still I always enjoyed it!
Great artwork in this set. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this opened on RUclips before! Fave would have to be the Gnat Miser. Who’d argue with a rat shaman?!
Been waiting for one of these. Man. Love Kamigawa block. Got in just as Champions came out. Played all the major archetypes of the sets. Had so much fun with it. Great stuff.
Kamigawa is my nostalgia block. Really got into magic around that time. The books for it were also my favorite, with a great cast and a pretty cool storyline. It really is a shame they totally overcosted basically everything in the block.
Just found this channel and i have to tell ihave collected the whole Kamigawa Block with each card 4 times, i was so crazy for it i could not sleep well until i had all the cards i needed, bought full boxes on a weekly base.
They're doing an innistrad revival so I could see it at some point, it's to good a theme to ignore and they only need some minor enhanced mechanics and support to make this set a hit, I say split the mechanics off between ninjas and samurai a bit but also have a bit of good intermingling (exp. Tree folk/fungus) between the two that can work synergistically given the proper card effects but also take more of a dive into japanese mythology
I started playing MTG with Mirrodin back then and I really like the Kamigawa Block a lot! In this time I was totally into Anime (Detective Conan, One Piece and Dragonball) and this set has fit perfectly. I also read the lore books and I liked them a lot.
I picked up a lot of magic cards from a friend. I traded him some video games for over 6,000+ cards. There weren't many rares but I got 90 foils which one was a $25 lava spike, Kiri-Onna, throat slitter and lots of cards from kamigawa block and original mirrodin block. I have 35 of that Sakura-Tribe Scout that are at about $3 each on tcgplayer. Also 2 Thran Dynamos from urza.
The artworks in this set were awesome. Artworks today don't look the same anymore as it used to. Card quality is really nice, better than today's card quality......
People hate Kamigawa ONLY because it followed Mirrodin. It was a low power set following a steroided juggernaut. Considering the popularity and overlap of anime fans with mtg playerbase and the popularity of Tamiyo(her home plane) I think we’ll return pretty soon tbh.
i love these chinapeople btw, thanks ben you crazy lad. kamigawa was my favourite block and i dont have the money to spend so much on a box. this took me back to a time where everything was nice and easy. loved that opening.
I was living in Asia at the time of this sets release. I drafted it in Chinese. Loved Ninja decks. Ornithopter was in the set and shuriken. You’ll never love a deck as much that wants to attack with ornithopters.
Man I used to love those old marvel cards!!! I gotta have so much of that shit packed away in the attic somewhere. Used to love the foils and all the weird inserts!
I really liked the ninjutsu mechanic. Boshido was fun. This set when it came out wasn't exactly the best but at the time the price for a box was low (so it sucked) which allowed us to draft the crap out of it. Super fun for drafting.
Actuqlly I like the theros beyond death set. I love the card art the extended art cards. A set doesnt have to come with a big price tag for me to like it. Midrodin and darksteel are up there on my list too!!
If I'm remembering right, when Saviors came out I was driving 40-80 miles to play LotR tcg. Davis or Berkeley on alternating Sundays, Redwood City on Monday nights. Had really stopped caring about being competitive, even at the FNM level, while Odyssey was still newish and had basically cashed out for Decipher games. Still had a janky zubera deck just in case ;) Moral of the short story is you always have some sort of deck for those times you get the itch and wish I still had the collection for Rudy to fondle. Nothing too exciting at the time, mostly nostalgia from 4th to Apocalypse.
yep That Tribe-scout! there are good cards in the set, people look over them because they aren't expensive or tournament. quality. I think the whole block is best for Casual 4-8 player games, some mechanics are great with 4+ players. Bushido is up there with Flanking and Shadow, all great for white weenie decks.
I would love a revisit as long as the power level would be closer to what it is now. I also think there is a bigger acceptance and understanding of eastern culture now.
People didnt dislike it because of its theme and such, they largely disliked it (As far as the groups I was around were concerned at least.) because it was somewhat resetting the power level after Mirrodin blew everything to hell. It was... so-so as a set, but Invasion, Odyssey, and Onslaught had been raising the bar, Mirrodin snapped the bar in half and set it on fire, then Kamigawa came off as an attempt to fashion a new bar going forward and was pretty forgettable as a result. I could understand someone coming in to Magic liking it a lot more, or someone just plucking it out of history to look through, but if youd been playing through set to set at the time it really was a bit... 'Meh'.
I was curious, so I did a quick dawnglare price check for relevant cards (Ignoring foil status, so that'd just add to the value): 1 Sakashima the Impostor 22.00 1 Pain's Reward 3.90 2 Kagemaro, First to Suffer 1.51 1 Pithing Needle 6.63 1 Mikokoro, Center of the Sea 12.37 1 Sekki, Seasons' Guide 4.24 1 Maga, Traitor to Mortals 3.41 1 Kami of the Crescent Moon 1.98 1 Erayo, Soratami Ascendant 7.55 1 Kataki, War's Wage 3.63 1 One With Nothing 1.98 1 Meishin, the Mind Cage 1.57 1 Kaho, Minamo Historian 2.20 1 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds 20.21 1 Choice of Damnations 4.04 1 Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker 11.10 3 Hand of Honor .93 2 Locust Miser .76 2 Manriki-Gusari .75 1 Ebony Owl Netsuke 1.46 3 Footsteps of the Goryo 1.58 2 O-Naginata 1.96 10 Sakura-Tribe Scout 1.77 9 Freed from the Real .87 That adds up to $151.29 on May 10, 2018.
Fun stuff, Erayo is auto banned in almost every commander group because of it's ridiculously easy to trigger ability, no lie it was one of the first cards on that ban list
the kamagawa and ravnica got me back in for a bit. the only sets where i actually bought fat packs for.. i mean bundles. the last set i went nuts before that was Mirage block and Urza... took a break after Masques to invasions and Ravnica to Scars, id get archenemy and a few parks of scars. Dominaria maybe a set where i'll get another. I would of enjoyed the first innastrad tho.
Hey there Mr AI...what is your opinion of sealed SOK boxes for the next 10-20years? Worth getting or is that $$ better spent of Avacyn or the Mirrodin blocks. Thanks!
I started with Betrayers and I loved Kamigawa, when standard was KAM/RAV. Kamigawa had some issues, those flip cards as an early attempt at two cards in one weren't a winner and there were few stand-out great cards. However, Kamigawa block's greatest sin was Mirrodin. Kamigawa had nothing that could deal with Affinity and because of that and because WotC took way too long to ban Affinity, standard sucked for the first half of Kami's standard rotation. KAM/RAV was sooo fucking good though.
Now I'm remembering. I have a lot of the snake monk/warrior/shaman double sided cards. Also, Sosuke's Summons was a such a good card for snake decks... Good stuff.
Bushido Blade is still great ! When Square had that FF7 money and they made awesome niche titles - Einhander is another that comes to mind. Maybe a lil Brave Fencer Musashi on the side??? Enix's competition made Square(and themselves) a better company. Then they became Squenix...
Kamigawa was when I first came in to the game and I still really like the set. It unfortunatly came out between original mirrodin and original ravnica. Still a fun set.
I loved this set. I figure a new Kamigawa set would be pretty popular nowadays as people seem to be more into Japanese culture. I think the mechanics were the biggest problem and all the weird rare cards. Weird that Yuki-onna is a rare creature since it's a snow (yuki) demon (onna).
This video just popped up in my feed, and when Rudy said "we'll never see a return to kamigawa ever" I thought he was being ironic, not realizing this was released over 4 years ago.
Came to say the same xD
Kamigawa will always be my favorite block. The story was amazing and the cards were very unique. Dont care what the masses say there will always be a soft spot.
Anyone watching this in 2020 during quarantine? This was recommended to me
seeing he pulled the 60 dollar oboro and tossed it in the rare pile -_-
its me, 8 months later, still in quarantine
I just pre-released
I just started playing Magic like 4 months ago, and am enjoying it so far. Being born as a half Japanese/American, I love the Japanese theme, and the art style.

@@j.g5542 I love Bok choi and still i am a Taco face race !
Rduy is actually doing a line of coke when he smells the cards, he just wants you to think he's smelling the cards.
I mean he is in Florida lol
He crushes up mdma and flakka and coke then makes pills and sniffs those
@@sullysosavage365 flakka coke and mdma
Actually Rudy, Sakura-Tribe Scout is not only a pretty good card, but due to it's play in recent Amulet Titan decks in modern you can sell them for 2 bucks-a-piece. Also on the financial side of things, that box was pretty flippin' great!
I'm running them in a mono green list with tracker, Excavator, Courser ect

Nice to see the peak of Magic artwork, before they all started looking like screen-shots from a video game.
On point man
That is so true

I've been begging wizards for years for a return

kamigawa block + ravnica block = golden age of mtg
my sweet summer child
Kamigawa block was one of my favorite blocks in MtG. I actually made decks AND sets with all the boxes I bought. I also loved the original Ravnica block

my all time favorite block, the kamigawa series, where great artwork, tribes, and storytelling goes hand and hand :) ty rudy for this box opening
Hi Rudy... so it seems we're going back to kamigawa
The art is by far what I miss the most, thank you for showing this!
Rudy just gave his age up. This puts him somewhere from 32 to 35. I'm shoot for 33, just cause Rudy has got that born in 85 vibe.
The art is AMAZING to me! All of these cards look awesome! I kind of really hope we do end up revisiting Kamigawa. I remember being a kid and seeing the boosters at Walmart, thinking they looked really cool. It was just a little before I started collecting.
The kamigawa set is my absolute favorite of all of them

I love legends, stronghold, and Mirrodon. The good old days. Miss them.
Man this was one of the coolest blocks from my childhood.
Same here, I started around this time.
Currently have a 5 colour Kamigama spirits EDH deck.
In just starting magic my first set is dominaria
Valkyrie sprites 420 gtx congrats welcome to the game :)
The Kamigawa block sucked compared to Mirrodin and Onslaught. At least if you were playing Type 2. Cool art though.
This block came out, what? A few years ago?
I really want those X-Men Fleer boxes :)
I have have nothing but love for this block. I loved the lore, the artwork and the mechanics. 10/10
I started playing MTG with Mirrodin back then and I really like the Kamigawa Block a lot! In this time I was totally into Anime (Detective Conan, One Piece and Dragonball) and this set has fit perfectly. I also read the lore books and I liked them a lot.
I yelled "BUSHIDO BLADE!" just as you said it, Rudy! 90's kids unite.
I first got into Magic with this set. It’s still my favorite, although AFR is a close second. I can’t wait for the new Kamigawa to drop.
this is a huge flashback. this set and the splice onto arcane mechanic was when i first came back to magic
Kamigawa cycle: simply the best artworks in 30 years of MTG.
I don’t play magic but like youre video’s and appreciate the artwork of the cards.
I always love the asmr rudy throws in when he smells the card
I loved the Kamigawa block! Betrayers was the set that I really got into Magic. The Nezumi are still my favorite race in Magic!
This is one of my favorite sets personaly. I had such a wicked snake tribal deck from the kamigawa block. Oh how I miss that deck.
I really liked Kamigawa because they tried something different. Also really liked the art.
People just didn't connect to it, I don't think they will ever return to Kamigawa. Roll on 2022 ROFLMAO :)
I picked up a lot of magic cards from a friend. I traded him some video games for over 6,000+ cards. WHAT WE DO HERE IS GO BACK BACK BACK BACK
It will never happen...many moons later. "I was wrong"
It feels really nostalgic. One of my favorite sets back then.
The artworks in this set were awesome. Artworks today don't look the same anymore as it used to. Card quality is really nice, better than today's card quality......
With the mention of Bushido Blade, my respect for Rudy just skyrocketed.

Ms. Sysbit steroided juggy ahahah funny.
As long as Mark Rosewater is in charge we won't return. He seems to think they can't return to this set and make it work.
Jizz in my pants
Think we'll still get a Kamigawa set in the future?
i love these chinapeople
btw, thanks ben you crazy lad. kamigawa was my favourite block and i dont have the money to spend so much on a box. this took me back to a time where everything was nice and easy. loved that opening.
I really love watching the unboxing of sets like this because I don't have 200$ to drop on a booster box. It's really cool.
Kamigawa is my fave set Rudy thanks m8, I made my crazy ass spirit deck because of it
those X-men cards hit me right in the childhood
A few good ones, great quality, but most of that block was garbage sandwiched between 2 of the most iconic and historic blocks of all time.
Thanks for taking us back Rudy :)
Giving you a like just from the Bushido Blade reference near the end.
I started and played mostly during Kamingawa.. Even read the damned books, of all things. Good times. Would love to go back to it.

i loved this block it made spirits a favored tribe of mine
Dominaria card feel is similar and has a ink spell that I remembered from sets many years ago.
Kamigawa was when I first came in to the game and I still really like the set. It unfortunatly came out between original mirrodin and original ravnica. Still a fun set.
Barrel Down Sokenzan hell yeah. One of the cards I still have because I like the name and or art.
Kamigawa is my favourite block. No lie

Open that Fleer Ultra X-Men '95 box Rudy!!!
I don't even have a snarky comment for this video, so I'll say this: I love a good hat, and good art.
