So you have cards called Custody Battle and Aggravated Assault in the set. I feel like there was a designer at wizards that was going through some shit when they were making this set.

Really wish they would go back to the old frames and the older way of doing the artwork on the cards. Now it's all done on the pc with adobe illustrator or something similar I wish they would do it by hand again. It might be more work for the artists but I think they would sell more cards. Plus it will look amazing.

I was 11 when Onslaught block was new and I had just really starting getting into Magic, man I loved the Gustcloaks! I played mono white Soldiers at the time, being able to swing them freely and all the other soldier synergies was so much fun.
Opening GC Runner > Cloudreach Cavalry > GC Harrier > Daru Warchief > GC Savior + Piety Charm or another Warchief + Cavalry was chefs kiss.
Also, Visara must have a really strong neck 🤔🤔🤔

    • @LeozaoMartins
      @LeozaoMartins 2 года назад

My first deck was the Celestial Assault and it run all of the Gustcloaks. I never found someone who liked the Gustcloak mechanic as well hahaha. I still remember the exact day my dad got me that deck as a gift after I asked so fkn much for some MTG cards. Recently I found someone selling one of those decks sealed and in Portuguese, just like my first deck, but they are charging R$250 (something around US$50) and the total value of the cards get around R$4 (less than a dollar). My inner child is begging me for it, but my adult ass is not pleased with the thought of spending so much money on some low value cards... But nonetheless, Odyssey and Onslaught were awesome blocks with awesome arts/lore and I really wish to play those cards again someday, somehow.

man, I recently got back into magic and after watching a couple of vids I looked at my old cards and yepp, back in the day I pulled a polluted delta foil !
I was so excited until I saw that for some reason 2 corners are a little bend .... I cannot explain that because I remember that I was really sad about getting a foil land and not a big fat green creature as foil. Magic wasn’t dying during this period at all, you just didn’t play or collect at that point so I assume that was the same with everyone. That was the period when the pro tour was steadily growing in popularity and coverage. And magic sales were going up. Was when Kai Budde was making a name for himself, hence his card in this set “void mage prodigy”

I was walking home with my semi-competitive Yu-Gi-Oh deck in my bag and I decided on a whim that I was going to trade it for some magic. Went into my LGS, and traded my deck for a Booster box of Onslaught, and some random rares that I liked in the case. I had magic cards from previous sets that I got through my brother but Onslaught was my first true Magic set when I jumped in, and it all started with a booster box just like this...good times.

The big problem with the sets during this era was people still remembered how amazing the Urza block was, and how lackluster Masques was in comparison. This was compounded by the legal battle Hasbro faced at the time. So people were still a bit wary even though there were solid cards in Onslaught.

There are over a hundred rares and five of them are fetch lands. A booster box has 36 rares so one box is very close to 1/3rd of the set and so you should get 1/3rd of 5 sac lands. Therefore the average per box is 1-3, not 2-4. There are boxes with 0 fetches in them. Back in the Onslaught time, draft was much more popular so boxes were broken way more than nowadays and that’s how constructed players got their supply of fetch playsets.

Wow that seems like alot of foils! I was hoping to see a foil uncommon Blackmail- my favorite card from this set besides Polluted Delta.

The only Onslaught will be the one on our wallets. -William Shakespeare. Seriously Rudy, thanks for keeping the videos going. It's a great way to start the morning while eating my cereal out of an old box of Mirage. :)

Dude, so nuts that u said people did appreciate these sets till later in there existence. In our old shop it wasn’t till we were past standard that people really started to use onslaught and so on.

I appreciated this era, it was the only time I played magic. I think I bought 3 boxes of onslaught trying to get goblin piledrivers

The whole time he was looking for fetchlands, though they are nice and needed for "the deck" for land fixing, I was looking for Astral Slides and the cycling cards to go with it lol. Alex did however get a playset of Forgotten Caves, Secluded Steps, some Lay Waste, some Renewed Faith, a Starstorm and a couple disciples and a few others like Lightning Rift.
How can anyone ever forget the one and only and totally undefeated W/R Astral Slide deck of that era for Standard (i.e. or should I say, T2)? Or how about especially when it evolved into a W/G with the Eternal Witness combo lol? Never ever lost a game or a match at GP's and World's. Now all we got to do is find him a couple Wrath of God and some Astral Slides and fill out the rest of what he is missing. He did get a couple Krosan Tuskars and a playset of Tranquil Thickets, so we're good there if he would like a W/G. Just would need to find the few other pieces for the W/G Astral Slide deck.
Goblin, Zombie, and Elf decks ran rampant during that era, and so, the Astral Slide deck was born. Players complained to have Astral Slide banned from Standard, but WoTC wouldn't do it, because it balanced out the meta. The only deck that ever beat the W/G Astral Slide deck near the end of that era was the U/G Snap deck (i.e. not Snapcaster Mage, Snap with Hermit combo). Both are to this day still two of the strongest decks ever brewed.
In my opinion, he got some really good pulls for one of the most famous decks of all time.

I opened a single pack of Onslaught on camera a few years ago and got a Polluted Delta. I was like... well that's all I need from this set xD.

Ah this was back when I bought my first complete box. This was the last set that had the 75 card packs that had like 5 rares in them and cost like $9. Such a good deal.
