Dr. Salt spent $12,000 on 3 booster boxes. Absolute MadLad Savage. F for the saltiest of respect.
@@sdoren_9074 nah....for me personally urza is where its at. But that may be bc i didnt play magic when beta was fresh. But the urza sets are pure nostalgia
Yes, but think about the $500 worth of cards he got for his 12 grand!!
@@sdoren_9074 i remember getting me some ice age, mirage and visions when i started, good old days !! And urza was just pure amazing when it came out, god i loved that set so much !!!! i had to make me a bargain deck even if it was banned, 2 - 3 turns and you could eliminate your opponent
@@sdoren_9074 my first starter was iceage too. I sold a bunch of my early magic cards in 2012, only to get back into it recently... These videos are a mix of nolstagia and regret lol
i know im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a method to log back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid lost my account password. I appreciate any help you can give me
I have no idea why I started watching your channel, I've never even played Magic, but I just keep watching more. It's interesting.
mike glidden lol
youtube is a weird place
and a great one at that
if you know the game, its even more entertaining! so, go buy some cards and play!
@Elb Vidya yeah, its hard not to get that vintage bug. unless your poor. like me. then its easy. lol
Rudy opens the pack fresh cards with his first and fourth hands, sets the cards down on the playmat, then while he opens the next pack, thus covering the camera, his third and second hands swap out his light played cards for the pack fresh ones
The art is so much more flavorful in the old cards. I wish they still made them like this. The fantasy element is just amazing!
@@generussell6145 For me, the "better" the art is, the lamer it gets. I am all for Stasis or Time Walk. Some really weird shit you would actually assume to see on a real cursed playing card or something. Modern MtG sets have a lot of artwork that looks like it was a screenshot from a high budget movie or game. It does nothing for me.
Yawgmoth's Bargain was a fun couple weeks of standard lol. So insane. Everyone in our LGS wanted copies and nobody wanted to trade them. I opened a foil Bargain and ended up trading it for Star Wars CCG cards and then regretting it, but then being glad once it got banned and tanked in value! I can't believe they ever thought Bargain was a good idea haha.
I straight up traded my magic collection for the Star Wars collection thought you could never go wrong with Star Wars still to this day I miss my magic collection and my star wars are still minty fresh in a box in my closet to this day
@Stephen Nah there's plenty of cards that still have good value.
Bargain was never banned in standard. Was in Extended
Foil bargain is 180 bucks now even being banned in every format XD
Bargain was my favorite card.
Had multiple foils. Totally running broken decks. Just for mindgames.
Back in the 90's i could only afford boosterpacks not whole boxes :p
19:04 Rudy didn't realize this was also duplicate, cause he got it as a foil (shining in the left of the video)
That bugged me until the end.
@The Big Game Theory Speaking from personal experience, siblings throwing bricks at your head as a child helps.
Thank you for letting me relive the Urza' s duplication trilogy Dr. Salty. Much Respect!!!
I remember opening boxes back then, and yes, I remember the duplication. Never really thought about it or cared - hell, sometimes it would work out for you because you'd get duplicates of the cards you wanted.
Amazing box. Bloodshot cyclops was also a dupe, between foil and regular.
Those last 3 videos were the best trilogy of 2019
Awesome opening. Very cool of Mr. Salty to pay for this, especially consdering he probably lost a few thousand dollars opening the box
Gotta say, a lot more entertaining than just lighting $4000 on fire but it amounts to close to the same
My recollection on foil distribution of this era... 5-6 foils per box. Foil rare NOT guaranteed in every box, only about 80-90% of boxes. Typical foil rarity breakdown was 3-4 common, 2 uncommon, and 1 rare if you got one. The double foil pack was an EXCEEDINGLY rare anomaly and actually pretty cool to catch on camera. Cheers for a fantastic walkthrough series of this era.
I love the general excitement this man shows in these old box openings. Regardless of why...you can tell he really, really loves cardboard lol
Yes, with the low number of rares back then, duplication was HUGE in these smaller sets. Often times that's where us tournament players would rely on the smaller sets to try and get decent rares in our box. Stuff like Covetous Dragon and Tethered Griffin were pretty heavy played back then.
Still can’t believe Bargin was an actual card. Still one of my favorite sets of all time. Great nostalgic video!
I'm smoking a cigar while you open this... A very cheap cigar.
Aidan MacLear lmao. The most underrated comment ever. Thank you Aidan and you too, Dr Salty!
Switch it to an expensive cigar, next time. And light it with Beta rares: it greatly enhances the taste.
the only thing that would make these videos cooler is if he did a grand total of how much the cards can add up to at the end, doesnt have to be super accurate but it would be cool to see! Im really getting into these videos and this channel!
watching the urza block opening brought me back in time. i loved every minute of it. the memories of opening these back in the day. priceless. thank you dr Salty
I'm so glad you did the video awhile back where you announced you were raising the prices on the Urza's boxes. I got one of these boxes for $700. A day before the spike. Thank you, Rudy.
lol WOW only $700.. what a deal……
Thanks for the memories Dr Salty! Rudy you had to get 2 or 3 at least boxes to get full sets back then. My favorite sets the Urza's stuff of all. About after the next block I got out but this was a walk down memory lane.
omg, my favorite set of all time... the reason why i started playing was because of that sweet sweet art of that Booster pack... Emperor croc, you will Always be a rare in my heart!!! thank you mystery Person for getting this opened on yt and thank you Rudy for everything
A fun drinking game is to take a shot whenever Rudy says some variation of duplicate or duplication in a box opening video~ Smashed every time!
Great video, and thank you to the buyer, really fun to watch. Urza's took me back for sure.
I have literally been watching your box openings all day. Good day
F: These videos totally bring back some really good old memories. I played a lot of these cards when I lived with my brothers and these videos just remind me of the multitudes of fun that we had. What a great feeling to reminisce. Thank you Dr salty!!! And Rudy!!!
I first encountered Yawgmoth's Bargain when I was about 14. I had been playing magic for a few years and was good enough to understand how powerful it was, having been playing competitively for about 2 years. I started assembling a deck that had all the tutors and lots of duals, and all the 0 cost artifacts except power nine. I somehow scraped together enough money to get a real mana crypt even(for high school me that was huge). I had force's as well. It was designed to get first turn kills with tendrils of agony. Bargain is just insane.
This Urza's block opening was like a blast from the past. I started playing Magic during the Urza's block , and yes the duplication of rares was common from Urza's block through kamigawa block which is when I stopped playing.
F for Mr. Saltie.
I think each rarity of card was inserted seperatly (they were on seperate print sheets). So technically, you could have 3 foils per pack: 1 common, 1 uncommon and 1 rare.
F to Dr. Salty. Destiny was good to me back in the day. Found a Foil Rofellos, 2 Rectors, 3 Metalworkers, and 2 Replenish. Found a deck I made that was the last before I quit Was Green/Red with 4 Emporer Crocs, think I found a decklist for it in Inquest or something.
I remember opening up a box of torment and getting 4 nantuko shades, i came back to magic 15 years later and i was astounded that you didn't get many duplicates and didn't like it.
Hoping for a Masticore! That card was so sick. I remember when Metalworker was a bulk rare. I had a few I basically trashed back in the day lol.
OMG...Yawgmoth's Bargain, one of my favorite card. I used to play that with Words of Worship
ive had 5 foils in one pack from Mercadian Masque. It was rare nonetheless but ive had that happen before. Thanks for the openings. brings back memories
Omg I love the Negator! Such a lore-heavy card is you know the story of Yawgmoth. They brought him back in New Phyrexia. As if Sheoldred found his blueprints in the glistening Oil but perfected him. No longer a negator but an Obliterator... that was such a nice touch.
Thanks DrSalty and Rudy. This brings back the old feels.
very cool thanks again. I would like to say I do remember getting a lot of duplicates in both of the smaller sets and getting the higher end cards was difficult. from what I can recall this had a pretty average amount of foils. me and my friend gravitated towards saga b/c of the lands and it was a larger set and at the time neither of us cared much about foils...we thought that they were just trying to be like Pokemon b/c of how hyped the foils were when we played Pokemon a few years before this
I haven't ever seen double foil in one pack. There were rares that I would get way more often. When I was a 12 year old Timmy, Prophecy was my jam. Loved the Avatars. I have so many copies of Sheltering Prayers it is unbelievable.
Pattern reserve list? Rudy you just opened 500x of them from UMA...come on.......
darthmikda My thoughts EXACTLY!!!! 🤔🤔🤔
I think he either says stupid things to get comments, or genuinely doesn't know the cards, or some combination of both.
@@Banterbear I know he says stupid stuff to get comments: Previous video Pluto.
I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING GOSHH RUDYYYY COME ONNN
@@Banterbear Or, you know, he fucking sees 100,000,000 cards a day and cannot really be expected to know every single card's info by heart over 25+ years of magic in an unscripted video, but nahhh obviously he would know literally everything.
the edition I startet to play =) just love the cards I was 8 years old, I couldn't spend that much boosters. most of the time I had those booster giftet
like your stuff Rudy greetings out of glarus
old border > modern border; old foils > modern foils.... Fuck it, old magic > modern magic
also, i don't think rudy gets the "press f" meme
At a glance this box was probably less than $300. In reality they arent even worth that much. If this guy tried to sell these cards back to Rudy, Rudy would probably give him 80% of the value. So, selling these cards back to someone like Rudy, the true value is $200-$250. I think Rudy even keeps the common and uncommons for himself, so there go the Tran Dynamos... So like $200 on a $3,000 box? Wow.
Even if this box had two copies each of the top 10 rares in the set, and one of those was a foil rector, you’re still looking at less than $1,500 maximum EV for a god box.
These vintage boxes are cool but you’d have to be crazy to open one.
I played MTG during this era, from Tempest to Odyssey. I dont play any longer, but I love watching openings of these vintage sets, it really takes me back. Its too bad though Rudy is pretty oblivious to the history behind these cards, it’d be cool if he could talk about the decks of this era and the gameplay/metagame legacy of the iconic cards, but he can hardly pronounce most of the card names.
Still Rudy is the best MTG youtuber around. Openboosters is torture to watch, I want to see him pull the Time Walk, but I cant bear listening to him fumble through his openings while he goes ‘woosh’ when revealing every card.
So then don’t watch openboosters. Or, at the very least, don’t put him down on his friend’s channel.
My Profile I was talking about his comment about openboosters’ channel. If he’s going to be negative about one of best openers in the community, who is currently opening a Beta and Unlimited box, keep it to yourself, tell openboosters about it constructively, or DONT WATCH. Simple. So you are missing my point...read the whole comment before you start defending something I wasn’t even talking about.
Jeez. Look at your comment. Hating the price, hating the buyer, telling that you played before, complaining about Rudy pronunciation but also liking and disliking. Go check yourself. That's at least bipolar with envy in my book
I'll just never understand how the sealed product value so vastly exceeds the best possible return you could get for opening it.
When I do watch openboosters, I make sure to watch it muted cuz the cringe is off the charts.
Back in the day I pre-ordered a box of Urza's Legacy when foils were brand new. I went to hosetown on the box in terms of value, I got 6 foils but none were rare (back then you were not guaranteed a foil rare in every box, it was quite a bit more random). Lucky for me I got lots of good cards to use to play magic with back before the days of buying cards on the internet so it wasn't a complete waste of money. Also back then you were not unhappy to get duplicates of decent playable rares in your box and trading was MUCH more common since you couldn't buy singles as easily.
Tempest through invasion block was my hay day in MTG and can tell you for certain duplication was common, and in invasion block in particular there were predictable places in the box itself that contained certain cards
From urzas saga set through invasion set I purchased and opened 3-5 of the small sets and 6-10 boxes of each of the larger ones
$269.91 in rare/foil value. Box cost $2,500.
Duplication was less an issue back then because it wasn't nearly as common for someone to buy a whole booster box. The audience was mostly teenagers then, and we'd foolishly buy 1-2 packs a week. Thus, even with this many dupes, no one really noticed.
9:20 "2 Foils 1 Pack"? Can´t believe that I laughed that hard :D
Rudy has made me fall in love with the words "pack fresh"
I bought these boxes back in the day when I was in my early 20’s. This was a thing back then. When you bought a box you got duplicates of the mediocre rares and singles of the good rares, kind of the way mythical are set up today
I'm convinced Rudy started this channel with the sole intent of not only getting to open someone else's rare/expensive booster boxes, but getting paid well to do it.
Yes getting duplicates was very common in all the Urza boxes
Crazy to see one opened.
Grandma Rudy was Rudy's first middle school date. You can tell by the way his voice lights up when he sees her.
Used to open these ALL the time. Don't ever recall seeing 2 foils, one pack.
Rudy, back in the day you could get more than one foil per pack. I was lucky enough to witness a full 15-card pack foil.
I got bargain from a booster when i was 13, shoved it in my black deck and the laughter started. It was so hilarioisly broken.
Rude, i dont know what is up with your vid but the image keeps shifting from side to side. Its very jarring.
I was wondering if I was the only one who was noticing that.
You made me notice, I will now act irrationally angry and heavily imply that it's your fault.
@@uiomancannot7931 Sorry?...
@@iSasqua7ch I honestly thought it was something with my eyes, then i full screened it and realsied it was the vid
It's the auto focus setting. Seems to be that it wanted to be a bitch lol
It always makes me smile when Rudy has a happy ending..
I played an emperor crocodile deck when it was legal with the original ravnica (I think it was 10th edition). I played it with a token deck with Glare of Subdual. LOVED that deck...
So he made $250 on a 4,000 box. Cool.
Thats why opening these boxes as gambling is so stupid.
You have to be outrageously lucky just to break even. Your odds of even breaking even are awful.
These packs should be saved for chaos drafting. Then they would be very fun to open, rather than disappointing.
I also remember pulling a foil Ring of Gix and selling it to a “prophet” named Terry for 100$ right out the pack. The reason I say he was a prophet is because he predicted the foils being extremely valuable in 20 years and everyone at the shop thought he was crazy. No way they will still be playing magic in 2020!! He collected complete foil sets. Hope he held on to them because I’m sure he could retire now. ( Unless he’s dead cuz he was already pretty old when these sets came about )
I remember duplication being huge with those sets and when someone pulled something good from a box at the shop everyone would panic buy hoping to hit it's duplicate...
Oh and an F for Doctor Salty...
Rudys favorite phrase. "i always rembered that back in the day." lol
When I was a teenager I had a deck with 4 Bargains that won in one turn, at most in three. Now I put back Bargains in my Omni-Show :D
You got that second Dragon in your 17th booster. In a set with 44 rares, assuming they are properly randomized, you have a 97% chance of hitting a duplicate by then. Don't be a Timmy, Rudy.
According to this guy, everything is "infamous"
I can remember back in the day, going to the LGS and buying two packs, and pulling dup rares.
Man, Yawgmoth's Bargain is just worse Necropotence. Yeah you get the cards right away and you don't need to exile discarded stuff, but BBB is just so much easier to reach than 4BB. Still I guess that's more a testament to how busted Necropotence was that they could double it's CMC and it would still be broken as shit.
THIS brings me back. Thank you SO MUCH DR SALTY and Rudy. And those hairy arms.
Yeah my friend got a box for his birthday when it came out, he got rector, metal worker, masticore, treachery and a foil replenish! Back then none of that was a big deal, now...
I bought tons of Urza’s boosters boxes and duplicates were definitely a thing, I actually got 3 cradles in one box, I miss those days!
Wow, Dr Salty hit a Gaia's cradle, Tolarian Academy, Metal Worker, and so much more. I'd say...damn worth it. :D
F for Dr Salty! Thanks for sharing with us you crazy bastard!
Repercussion x2 was actually awesome! This card is expensive and strong! You missed Replenish and Rofellos.
Tripple F's for The Good DR! Much love, you rock! Doctor Rocktor!
Great box!
You would have a Mizu...... Not even the slightest surprised at this. Also. HELLA knice knife right there!!
*Opens a statistically likely number of rare duplicates for a 44 rare set*
Rudy: Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I honestly just think the old sets had real randomness to them.
When there's true randomness you should expect a couple of duplicates, especially when the set is relatively small.
I think there is a pattern to modern boxes though. I think the rares follow print sheets, though not just one to throw people off who are trying to tracking packs. Not counting foils, they seem inserted (meaning it's possible to get the same rare twice in the same pack if one of them is a foil). I'm also guessing that - maybe once every 5 boxes - you'll come to the end of a sheet, where you can only fill up a portion of the box. So if you're really unlucky, you'll get a box that filled up to the middle, then get a duplicate end from the same sheet. Meaning, if my theory is correct, you'll NEVER get three of the same rare in any given modern box (unless they're foil or a box topper).
It's not simply a matter of randomness, which the really old sets did not have (they got drop in packs in the order they were on the sheet), but the actual rarities of the cards were not equal.
With this and Urza's Legacy there are total of 44 rares, but the sheets they used back then fit 110 cards, so there was no way to get an even number of cards on a sheet. Their collation of the time doesn't seem up to have been up to the challenge of sorting out filler cards, which means something would have appeared more often, which would explain the high number of duplicates (and the fact they were all lower end ones at that).
Couple a weeks ago, going through my box of bulk cards. Found a metalworker. Didn’t realize this was a 40€ card!!
Your camera has had it with the Urza saga.
Small set? Let me complain about totally understandable duplicate rares!
Yeah I don't get the outraged reaction. 44 different rares in 36 packs. There's gonna be duplicate.
Urza's Saga > Urza's Destiny > Urza's Legacy
seen the set of urza's a few times still love it ... i'll give F for Dr. salty and ill give T for Rudy cause im jealous of the openings .. luv that set!!!
Every booster box used to be like that.. collecting a complete set was near impossible
I know this is old but duplication was common.... I opened maybe 40-50 urzas legacy boxes and 20-30 destiny boxes and this is very similar to what I remember. The awesome thing was you would indeed get the duplication on the top end rares...
Yeah Bargain is/was busted, especially seeing that it was in Type 2 together with the Rector and the Tower land from Saga. Definitely played Bargain decks until bannings and rotation. There were many ways to run it like, all-in enchantments (Abundance, Attunement, and Replnish) or Dark Ritual and the Skirge from Saga +Soul Feast, Yawg Will. However this whole set was nuts because another tier one archetype spawned from this set too with Opalescence/Replenish + Bargain/Abundance/Attunement and later Parallax Tide/Wave from Nemesis. This from the block with Tinker, lol.
I'm glad you mentioned never seeing multiple foils in a pack because my boyfriend and I recently opened a booster pack of Apocalypse and we were baffled to find two foils inside. Nothing seemed odd about the pack when we opened it, but now I'm questioning the legitimacy of the cards. 🤔🤔
Continued watching the video and I now see you did get a double foil pack as well, awesome!
You're slowly becoming the biggest mtg RUclipsr
I think the complaints about the cards being garbage or low value takes away from these videos man.
The RUclips channel is called Alpha INVESTMENTS... Think about that for a second
@@TJBtheonly Sure and opening these boxes is a terrible investment to begin with and more about just enjoying the cards themselves. The saga box opening captured the spirit of that but these last two were a little bit on the 'where are the flippin mythics' scale. Anyway it's just my opinion.
@@bjlee20 Um it's not a bad investment too sell the box to someone and make money off of the RUclips video of you opening said box.. He can't lose it's all profit. You have no idea how money and profit work do you? But yes. You are correct it is your opinion and you are allowed to be wrong, I can't stop you from being wrong but I can still tell you that you are wrong.
@@TJBtheonly Obviously I meant from the perspective of the buyer of said box. Relax champ.
@@bjlee20 Okay? Well you weren't talking about the perspective of the buyer on your first comment. Which was directly about Rudy. You then never said anything about the buyer. So my bad for not reading your mind and knowing that not saying anything about the buyer meant you were now talking about the buyer. I'll keep doing me champ. Maybe you should be more concise with your thoughts or you could just keep your comments about nothing to yourself?
Duplication was a thing back then. I cracked a box with double Masticore/double Yawgmoth' Bargain back in the day and made my whole lgs jealous.
when me and friends chipped in to buy boxes we would get multiple rares in a box. some double foil packs and a lot of wrinkled/damaged cards (packs that had cards sticking out when it was sealed).
Praise the might mahi mahi the trilogy is complete.
he still has Urza's Masters to open
@@michaeledwards1644 shhh dont let the Timmys know that.
Wow I remember opening those along time ago 😄 wish I kept all my cards
Duplication is a common thing, because these boxes were really randomized, it is like they threw the booster packs into a large pile before putting them into boxes. The number of rares does not greatly exceed the number of packs in the box. So not much duplication in the large sets, but lots of duplication in the small sets.
All the art of this set is amazing, holy freaky
Congrats Dr. Salty that was a close one.
I can confirm that rare duplication was a thing as there weren't as many rares per set as nowadays. The foils were also harder to get as they only came about 5 per box. F to Dr. Salty!
Somebody explain to me why you would pay $4000 for a chance at maybe $1000 in cards? Aren’t the cards the product you are buying? Not the paper the packs are made of
Jason you need help bro. Go to school. Read a book. Something. Get that IQ up dummy
Oh man, 3 Rudy alligators on top of the box. Thats not a good sighn
I have the urzas incubator in foil, wanted to see one opened for you here mr. Salty.
