As a girl raised in southeastern US, I love this! I didn't know stewed tomatoes and okra was a dish common in Caribbean cuisine but that's awesome! Since I LOVVVVVE Caribbean food, I'm about to binge watch your channel now. :-P
I'm from Charleston, SC. White rice and Okra are staples in the Gullah community. As a kid we ate this dish often, and I make it for my kids today. They love it. It's a quick, tasty meal that comes together nicely.
yasss! i grew up eating freshly made and canned okra stew year round fo' any meal. my fav style is with bits of smoked seafood, plenty of rice a/o cornbread. even if people don't like okra, they might change their mind with this recipe
Yessss. I'm from East Texas which we serve this with a side of purple hull or black eyed peas, cornbread, rice and meat of choice or fish. Thanks for sharing Chris this recipe it takes me back to my summer n fall days of childhood with my Grandmothers house for dinners...everything was fresh from yard gardens ..
I grow purple hulls every year in my garden. Don't think I could make it through the winter without them to remind me of our Texas summer meals (Brazoria Co.). My Mama made this dish but fried a little bacon and onion together, added the tomatoes, then the okra. Served it over rice. It was delicious!
Chris, I just made this for lunch! Outstanding! Instead of sea salt I used celery salt and added a little Creole spice. I have to tell you that wine vinegar? Holee molee! Chef's kiss my brother! So glad I tried this! Thank you for sharing your dishes with the world!
Just dropping in to say that I make this ALL THE TIME and every single time it's a hit. Love your channel, thank you for sharing these delicious and simple recipes!
Man let me tell you this right here was goooooooood. Didn’t have Red wine vinegar so added balsamic and used tomatoes I had left over from roasting earlier, fresh corn on the cob and veggies stock. Chef’s kiss good!! Thanks for sharing
VERY VERY GOOD FOOD DELICIOUS FOOD AND NUTRITION...AS A TRINIDADIAN AND PROUD US CITIZEN LIVING ABROAD I LOVE THIS AND I COOK THIS TODAY WITH AH NICE PIECE AH SALTFISH BRO I SPREAD THIS ON SOME RICE AN A BIG PIECE AH ZABOCA AR DE SIDE.......RESPECT RESPECT 🙏 TOMORROW IZ DHAL RICE AND SMOKE HERRING.....LOUD ONION GARLIC TOMATOES AND BUDD PEPPER......YEA AH GROW MEH OWN
Chris my kind of food Okra and tomatoes, and I'll eat with some sada roti 🍽Plate is ready.Love it No Meat Tuesday ❤🤗stay safe stay bless thanks for sharing
I had it during the Lenten season with baked citrus salmon. What a dish. I usually use the Indian Okra as there is more viscosity and the stew is better tasting
I made the stewed pork ribs today after subscribing to your channel for the first time. I have no idea if it tasted right because I have never had carribean cuisine. I can just say it was sooo good! This dish will be next!!!
In America it depends on where you were raised on how you might pronounce okra. I heard, okra, okree, okra, gumbo, lady fingers, okru, are all versions I've heard as i have family from all over. My grandparents where raised in Oklahoma but my Grandfather's people are from Tennessee, and south Carolina, and my Grandma's kin come from Alabama Mississippi and Louisiana, so we adore okra in our family and everyone has they way to pronounce it.
Really good recipe. I start with chopped bacon, and sauté the veggies in the grease. Can also be made Cajun style, just using a little different spices.
As Egyptian we all grow up eating Okra with tomatoes sauce and grined beef with some rice. I though we are the only people who buy and eat okra. Good to know we are not the only one XD
You can dry the ends of okra that you discarded ,and then make it in powder by pounding it or use the coffee grinder. it will make a delicious soup added to cooked ground beef and fried onions add black pepper and ground coriander. tomato sauce or tomato paste . eat with aseeda which is porridge made of fermented sorghum flour and water. Sudanese and south Sudanese well known traditional dish . Yumm.
If you deep fried the diced Okra golden brown ahead of making this stew you will achieve: 1- get completely rid off the slime, deep frying will dry it out 2- release lovely flavor of Okra , the dish will get at another level and this is out of experience because this dish along steamed rice is popular in the middle east, some people add diced meat to the Okra stew...
