I'm not a muppet I happened to be a diesel mechanic and a diesel engine will get addicted to ether I don't care what anyone says I work on them all the time people use it year around because thay got it addicted to ether so you can believe what you want I know.

@@anthonyyoung7344 I'm not a muppet I happened to be a diesel mechanic too and those engines that wont start without ether even in the summer are fucked and need rebuilding. 9 times out 10 the the rings and bores are shagged through high hours or poor maintenance and would still be shagged if ether didn't exist. Addicted to ether just means the owner/operator cant be arsed to fix the problem and the only way to start it is with compression in a can.

engines only get "addicted" to it because there fucked 👍
we've rebuilt loads of engines and always been down to worn bores, piston rings, lack of compression.

We had an after market ether cold start system fitted on our trucks when I worked in Germany MANY years ago to lower the flash point and warm the engine in the pre-heater days. Used sparingly and when actually required it was a godsent but it required a trained operator to be the brain for that truck, if it didn't start you found out why and you fixed it! Great to hear someone talking basic engineering sense. Nice upload. 👍

Here in the southern US addition to starting fluid is what we refer to some old tractor or logging equipment that had the problems you referred to but some guy didn't know how or want to spend the money to fix so after years of dry starting and wearing out the cylinder walls wouldn't have good compression to ignite fuel air mix and wouldn't start with out starting fluid keep the information coming

Used a bit of ether (aerostart in Australia where I am) to wake her up and off she went. Next day started on the button no ether at all. See people, they don’t get addicted, it’s only to help if you’re finding it hard to start it.

Great explanation. I'm a or was a farm boy in the states. Grew up in Minnesota and on mornings when the wind chill is -30 F. WE HAD TO USE ETHER. Or light a fire under the engine to warm it up. And I don't think my father would have agreed to that going on under a $80000 tractor and cattle needing to be fed.
Any way, we had ether attached to the engine on some or a can of it in the tool box. And if used properly and can of ether would last forever because like you said. It just needs a couple of squirts and you're good to go. Great vids. Really like how you make those old girls purr again.

Two years ago i had a bit of time and i broght my pump to a shop for reconditioning and it was like 100$ and now my tractor works without any problem and it starts without any spray or anything.

Years ago when I worked on plant, an old B100 on a cold morning would not start. twin oil bath cleaners. Dropped off one bowl and used a burning rag on a stick. Started ok, but then noticed the paint on the second oil bath bowl starting to bubble ! the oil had caught fire . oops.

I am a new subscriber and going over some old videos . A good video this one , being working on Marine diesals for 40 yrs and the Ether addiction is rediculous , the people who say it dont understand a lot . I agree entirely that the reason you have to use is because there is something wrong , and until you fix the original fault you will have to keep on using it , SIMPLE . As for wanging them over on the starter motor , this will just cause damage ! The insulation in the starter motor and on the leads is only made for 10 second bursts, so if you burn ya leads you will need to keep usin Ether because will end up slow starting speeds. As you said its all to do with heat on top of the pistons through compression , if they have being stood a long time , or being stood in sub zero temperatures the compression is going to be low . Long periods of storage , everything will have contracted and oil presence will have disappeared , sub zero temperatures same again .
Every engine I have rebuilt has needed Ether till its warmed and the compression rises.

I only came across 1 engine that took a prolonged shot of ether, it was a worn out, clapped out 15 liter in a semi (lori). It wouldn't cold start without it, and I would stand there another minute holding the go pedal, till it could idle. I was one of the only people that could start it on really cold mornings, and I got it to start every time....
I just woke up a lawn mower, that had been inoperable for months, with some (made sure to use small shots to get it to start, and stay running long enough to clear the carb)...
I've driven semi trucks (lori's), with ether buttons....

I am a diesel engineer working on railway locomotives, I would never use easy start on any engine, unless I have to

I’m glad you made this video as I’ve been saying this for many years,, it’s not addictive it’s a shagged out or a faulty engine.

  • @Geoscot
    @Geoscot 4 года назад

Spot on, I used to believe in addiction, but I learned that poor maintenance over many years was the problem. Ether still has its place but don’t blame it for years of neglect.

Merc used ether ports on the trac's and mogs as well. Was always told ether just hid problems, they weren't too far off 😂.

If really cold in middle of field with no Easy Start a burning rag on stick by the intake.
    But I'm talking 50 years ago 😉

Funnily enough i had my first use of easy start yesterday trying to get my car to start, i had been screwing at her all week. I had changed a fuel line and fuel filter as there was getting air into the lines. The car has a manual primer and was taking fuel up with it and when you turned they key there was nothing just constant turning over. After bleeding the system and trying again there was nothing. After some investigating the lift pump was at fualt.

I drove a boat with a Detroit 8/71 twin turbo and even in the Australian summer it would not cold start without ether but it had ether induction ports under the blower from factory so if it was addicted it was from birth and it's Muma must have been an ether junkie.

Our Chevrolet 1 ton dumper has a 6.5 that's is just plain wore out and in need of injectors so we use either but only 1 small squirt ...we would fix it but it only hauls hay and about 10 loads of sand a year for bedding the cow shed

I think the reason that ether got the reputation for getting engines "addicted" was often it was only required when the engines started to lose compression which of course would only get worse over time and require ever more ether until in the end the engine just would not run. As a kid I would put easy start into an air rifle with enough it would even recock itself and at night there was three foot of flame out of the barrel.
