Entryway & Living Room Makeover EP3 (Creating a Calm & Cozy Home) | XO, MaCenna

- I’ve always loved creating something out of nothing and working with my hands but up until a few years ago my only tool was a hot glue gun. Now I look around at the mess I’ve made while working on a project for our home - at all the materials, scraps, failed attempts and MANY tools I used to create and it reminds me of all the fears I’ve overcome to get here.
I refused to let the fears I had rob me of the joy that creating and working with my hands gives me. I look back now at all the projects I’ve accomplished over the last few years and I’m so happy I didn’t give into those fears.

I hope you guys enjoy this video! I felt this pull to create something new and I hope it's as special for you as it was for me to create! Thank you, guys, so much for being here every week and supporting me on this crazy adventure of creating a home! I love you!
love you MaCenna chum… 🤎 the most creative, bubbly, brings us so much joy and inspiration girlie ever! xO
Love you MaCenna!❤ xoxo
I loved this style of video. I've been watching your content for a few years, and what you've done is amazing. So much grwoth. I remembered when you built those patio chairs in your LA apartment, it was one of the first times you used more tools than you were used to, and they came out so good. My personal style is diffrent than yours, but i admire how you execute each project. No doubt this house is going to be your dream come true because you are making it happen. Thank you for sharing your journey and letting us see the roadblocks and how you overcome them. Thank you for being brave in tackling a new project when i can't even bring myself to look for materials. I can't wait to see how this room turns out!
Love your style, vision and enthusiasm...keep dreaming and creating..
Love you MaCenna!! ♥️♥️♥️
Glad you aren't rushing but are taking the time to do things up to your standards. That's actually way more interesting to watch than someone making over a living room in a day!
Agreed! Take your time! We want you to move at a sustainable pace for you so we can watch your videos as long as you’re still making them!
I couldn’t agree more
Absolutely!!!
Loved this one time slowed down today love the two paint colours
Completely! I much prefer this, we feel more included in the process, it feels like😊
I love that, "what's one thing I can do today, to get closer to my goal...my vision." 💘
I never realized that procrastination could be a fear response, but that's exactly how I'm feeling about my home renovation ❤️
I just built a privacy fence for my patio from salvaged wood because if MaCenna can do all she has done, so can I! It took so long and got really tedious at one point, but it’s SO nice to have a fence and feel secluded now instead of exposed on our patio, thank MaCenna 😊 ❤
LOVE that!! omg and from salvaged wood AMAZING!
Where did you find that much wood!
@@wanderingwithali5138 some of the slats were from a fruit wholesalers, they came off the corners of pallets. The other slats I made from old fence panels that my mom got from a client she worked for. The tops of the fence are skirting board that came out of a house two houses down from me that was being renovated, so I had to strip 40yrs of paint off them to sand and stain. The whole thing was a labour!
I told myself I wouldn’t be as invested in the storybook house as I am the cottage, and I tried. I really did…😂
Lol why would you set yourself up like that? 😂 We can’t look away from what Macenna does! It’s so fun to see her work her magic! 😉
She really draws us DIYers into her world 😆
Same here! lol
Same!!😂
I knew I'd be addicted to both, haha. MaCenna really is a treasure ❤
I am now 63 years young and have always had the attitude of ‘yes I can do it’ with one exception, carpentry! I regret it and now I have arthritis it’s too late. You are an Old Soul, I am too. You should be so proud of yourself. The kitchen you built in the cottage is amazing. As for this video, love the corbel on the inside! 😊
I LOVE that you are taking this house slower than the cottage. I love seeing the process and the evolution of these projects that you’re doing because it’s real! This is how creativity works. It doesn’t always fit in a week so keep showing us the steps along the way to the final destination. We love it!
Love the intro! I am sure you hear this a lot. However, you have inspired me to build a 16 feet by 8 feet built in bookcase in my living room on the television wall. I am in the final steps of priming and painting them.
My father has terminal cancer and thought it would be a great idea to loop him to my plan of action. He would come by everyday and watch me put the cabinets together and give ideas on how I could make it just right. He would get super tired and take a nap and wake up and be super shocked how much I accomplished and brag to him friends how good it was coming along. Thank you for the encouragement to know I can do anything I put my mind to. XOXO
Such a sweet story. So proud of you for tackling that HUGE project. I hope you’re proud of yourself too! And SO sweet of you to include your dad in the project. I am sure that means so much to him. Sending love to you and your family. 💙
Hope your dad starts feeling better!
It's such a relief knowing I'm not the only one who does this!!... fear is such a strong feeling to fight....u give me so much inspiration, MaCenna. Thank you so much for ur honesty 💗
She really needs her own show!
I’ve been watching your channel for a few years now and I remember when you first picked up power tools to make those wooden outdoor chairs. Now look at what you’ve done - windows, cabinets... a million house pieces from scratch. You’re amazing!
That intro made me so teary; I have been feeling that exact way, so afraid to test things and try my ideas out of pure fear of failure. But, you have been so inspiring and fun to watch over the last couple of years and after purchasing my first home in October I have been building my tool inventory to be able to take on some more brave projects! So thank you, for being so absolutely inspiring and beautiful inside and out.
💕💕💕
Macenna you have been giving this old lady the courage to start projects with baby steps. I am probably older than your mother and just now starting a refresh of my husbands office with vintage furniture, redoing some pieces to meet his needs, painting the walls (I always hired someone before) and it feels so good. Empowering. I really like what you said about fear being the cause of your procrastination. I’m always glad for your weekly posts. Like I said, you inspire me.
Hey Barbara, you rock! I'm also a senior viewer (very senior!) and even though I have some physical disabilities, I can still do some things; and young MaCenna there is being an awesome influence. I keep remembering we have other hero's who have shown that age is not the end; people Helen Miren, Maya Angelou, Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Kamala Harris are a few of my favorites. We can be those women for another generation; awesome, isn't it?!😀
Girl Power!!! My friends.... I'm 55 and DYIng all my life all sort of things. But at this age I'm not dealing very well with the tidying up afterwards. Messy, dusty, ha... So allergic!
@@homeis8478 LOL! So true!
Me also. I feel MaCenna is a younger version of myself. Newly retired, I'm going to town on my home and loving it. We once owned a home with this arch situation. Even rounding out your arches softly, reduces the visual of the room your walking into. We opted to square them off and results were good. Looking forward to seeing what you do with these.
You go girl, life in itself is trial and error a good example of never giving into your fears. Just go for it & do it
Been too scared to post this on a public forum but wanted to for years... MaCenna's ability to remain positive, optimistic, driven, organized, and clear with what she wants in life has helped me in periods of depression. Just watching you do things you didn't think you could do helped me get up, get going and keep going. I am 29 now and I know that's when you made major changes in your life, and I've been gearing up to make some major moves myself. I see a version of myself I want to be when I watch your videos, and it gives me hope. Thank you, MaCenna.
Kinsley watching you explain the corbels from the couch was so stinkin cute! 🥰 Can’t wait to see all you do. It’s going to be beautiful.
Lol yes!!! Was coming here to say this!! She seemed just as fascinated as we are 😂😂😂
Lol. I thought the same thing. 😊
I didn’t even notice her. But it’s adorable! She’s so invested
It’s like Kinsley is trying to understand what she is saying.
To me you are like watching an artist create a masterpiece. (Like your mom does) I am fascinated seeing it all come together into something even more beautiful than imagined. You inspire me to try out my own ideas. Your home is lucky to have you…so are we! Thank you, MaCenna. ♥️
WOW thank you that is the most amazing compliment!
The new wall color is definitely softer than the white. Makes the room feel entirely different. The arches are amazing!
You're 'learn on RUclips and dive in' has inspired me to tackle some 'scary' projects of my own. I particularly appreciated your words in today's intro. Thanks!
Thank you for that intro. Your words resonated so much, because you're not alone. My fears also let me procrastinate. Thank you, I feel like, I should take your advice and just do it 🤗
I actually wrote those words down....on my board in big letters, to follow, as I needed too hear that. Thank you Macenna 🌷
Dear Macenna, this video was PERFECTION. The feelings you convey through the pacing, filming and editing are visceral. Add to that, the subtle way of teaching us a lesson on fear and procrastination and you have a video that should be used to teach others how to produce video content. Honestly, I don’t understand how a video of someone painting a wall can be so moving! You never cease to amaze us!
The beginning of this video is so motivating!!! It doesn’t matter if what we are scare of trying out, whether it’s renovating, or starting a home-based bakery, or crafting... Anything can be possible, if we have the right mindset to start trying them out. Thank you MaCenna ❤
I love Kinsley‘s attention to every word you are saying. 🥰
The livingroom already looks more warm and inviting with the new wall color. Beautiful!
I just have to say, as a woman who procrastinates because of the same kinds of fears you talked about, you are such an incredible inspiration. Your accomplishments in your reno projects over the last couple years have made me start thinking that hey maybe I can actually do the thing. So thanks for that 😊
Agree with this so much! Procrastination is such a common manifestation of fear. So glad when I can work past that and get to my project. Super inspiring!!
I love how Kinsley is your audience. She's so cute! I love everything you have done. You are so inspiring. ❤
I am OBSESSED with that color! So gorgeous! On camera it doesn’t read grey (maybe just a teeny bit), but more of a taupe with slightly green undertones. Absolutely STUN-NING 👏🏻
this is why you are so appealing. you are masterful once you take the leap. this is so encouraging. you are bolstering almost one million (926K subs today). thanks darling. thanks so much.
MaCenna, you’ve come such a long way…not just in terms of your skill development but also with regard to the wisdom you’ve gained. Happy for you.
I love everything about this video. I think I've watched it like 3 times now. From the intro all the way to the end, something about it felt like watching a movie. Part of me is also starting to adopt your "If they did it then I can do it too" and I like to think that watching you is watching a future version of myself. I love how transparent and open it is too, about the reality of creativity and how it takes on a mind of its own. I love the forgiveness and the fact that you allow more time for a project if that's what it needs, and from a viewer's POV it's always ALWAYS worth the wait. I love the vibes. You're truly amazing Macenna.
Beautiful paint color. Painting a room makes a major difference in how a space feels. Thank you for making videos. You are so talented and creative. Glad I found you. Fellow Texas girl who appreciates inspiration.
I am buying my first house. I move in next month and I can not wait to start projects. Macenna…YOU have inspired me. I’ve been watching you work on the cottage since you bought it. You have made it seem possible for me to tackle things. I just conquered cancer and chemo. And I have decided to take the leap, buy my first house at 38….and make it my cozy home. I can not wait! And I partially have you to thank! ❤
A big congratulations on conquering cancer and chemo. I’m still struggling with mine, but yet am inspired to try a few more projects in my home. Enjoy your new home. 😊
so unbelievably brave of you to paint that fireplace dark brown in a white sweatshirt I could never!! In all seriousness though, I am in love with the progress you've made on your house and the cottage! the cozy home vibes are immaculate!
Me neither! The sweatshirt would never be the same again! 😂
hahah i didnt even think about it but i might actually love paint all over that sweatshirt too :)
I was here for the same comment, I thought like she is such a pro now, our renovation queen😍💪🏼
We all know it's going to turn out completely gorgeous! ❤
MaCenna, I went back to watch early reno videos of the cottage this week and it made me emotional. Seeing your willingness & excitement to try new things and your perseverance to continue on when things were challenging is so inspiring. And watching those older videos now - after seeing all that you have accomplished since then - it made my heart swell with pride and joy for you. Watching you take that fear and use it to push you forward gives me so much excitement and enjoyment. I love your videos, your projects, and your outlook on life.
aww thank you so so much! that means the world to me!
So good.
MaCenna, I love this style of video! Your voiceovers feel like we're listening to your actual thoughts in the moment. I also love that we didn't see the finished product just yet, it feels like a story unfolding. Everything you create is magic!✨
Okay. I'm living for the voice over. Wow
McCenna, your video making skills are growing just like your diy skills. The opening of this video was so beautiful and meaningful. I love the creativity you put into drawing us into the story of this house that you are creating into your home. I love your bravery to take on new projects that means trying something you have never done before and bringing us along for the adventure. You inspire me!
Oh! That Sculptor Clay looks SSOOOOOOO good!!
Warm and welcoming just like you 🌟
I used sculpture clay in much of my home. It’s the perfect color that goes with everything. Glad you removed the corbel things they did look low and odd where they were. A friendly suggestion…instead of always saying “I feel” change it up to “I think” or “in my opinion-preference”….
I have to tell you that at the beginning when you talked about not giving into fear on starting a project is EXACTLY what I needed to hear right now. I am going to be starting a new project for my house and I am super nervous about messing it up but this has definitely given me some of the confidence boost that I needed!
Have followed your journey for a long time now. The cottage renovation gave ME life during the pandemic. Excited for this CA home too. Your content (+you, your mom, Romeo & Kinsley) is one of my favorite ways to relax, so inspiring, so friendly. I talk about your projects so much that people think we're actually friends in real life! Happy to watch you grow, learn, do...all the things! Thank you for all the long days and late nights, daily trips to the hardware store, pushing through your fear to create the life you love and bringing us along for the ride. ❤
I loved your speech at the beginning. I love DIY because it gives people the confidence to enter the crafting world, but sometimes i see people who still so afraid to move from crafts to craftmanship. People who would rather hot glue the seams on custom curtains instead of sewing a simple line. Creating can be a very intimate and daunting process, and im so glad to see the work you have put into not limiting yourself, and submitting yourself to the rewarding process of learning new things.
MaCenna!!! I just love you so much. I appreciate your sincere vulnerability-you’ve been inspiring me for years to take on what I was scared about. You are such a role model to so many and grateful for your content.
Your skills as a videographer and storyteller shine!!! ❤❤
Kinsley watching and listening to you while you were demonstrating the corbel detail was hysterical!
As you worked around the room with that beautiful wall color, it was like gently pulling a soft blanket around the shoulders. Always go with your instincts, they have not failed you!
My ocd loves MaCenna ...thank you for noticing things that are not quite right and fixing them 😊. Your house is already stunning, but I can't wait to see what it looks like when YOU say it's 'done' (for now).
The paint is stunning and warm. Getting cozy vibes. We built our house 31 years ago and never stop reinventing our cottage or the gardens. Gives me life as do you.
Love the video. Thank you for removing the annoying click sound affects. Can't wait to see the finished room
I’ve done a bit of interior design in homes and a restaurant n had builders/craftsmen on site. But one thing I always wanted to learn was woodwork and how to operate machinery properly. One of my uncles has an amazing wood workshop. During lockdown I really wanted to learn how to use all the tools/machinery and was very intimidated by it all. They didn’t teach how to use them but were persistent I should learn how to use them on my own. So proud to say I taught myself on how operate everything on my own 😅 self taught is the best liberating feeling of accomplishment. I got so addicted to using a drop saw I wanted to make everything that pop in my head 😍 you’re very inspiring to watch and such a creative gifted designer/builder! Can’t wait to do up my own place one day. So awesome to able to switch from painting/wallpapering to building 😍 love it the passion never goes away ❤ just need to learn how to weld n do electrical now lol
Ugh I'm in tears MaCenna. I've been following your channel for years (before you bought the Texas home) - watching your growth and learning your implicit lessons of going for things and starting somewhere has been truly such a big support for me as I've overcome so much on my own these past few years. Thank you, I'm SO proud of you and I'm proud of me too :)
I love the color you put on the walls. It made the stairway pop! I thought the molding you had on the doorway defeated the illusion of having the doorway look taller. It’s going to be so pretty!
love this style of video - perfect for a calm sunday evening (for me)! And girl, I see the number of subscribers coming close to a million!!!! OMG!
yay so happy you like it!
That is exactly what I'd imagine sculptor clay would look like. Great choice
Kensley was very attentive to your explanations of the corbels and paint project, what a sweetheart she is. I like your choice of color and details, MaCenna.
We're ten months into living in our new construction home and have finally really started to, what I like to call, settle in. Small projects, adding paint, curating art for the walls, investing in our yard so the long term beauty we envision has a foundation to grow from . . . BUT, it can all feel so overwhelming. Your voiceover thoughts were exactly what I needed to hear today. xo
I actually like the contrast of the white stairs and rails to the new wall color. 😊 I say keep it white.😅
Loved your intro and expressing your fears and taking a leap of faith, not procrastinate and just do it. What a great message because it just makes me want to keep moving forward. Love all your ideas.
Beautiful color for the room and the fireplace! I also like the arches the way they are now. Unadorned.
Really powerful video McKenna with an inspiring message about facing fears. We are all afraid to try something. We doubt that we can do it. Thanks for the encouragement. ❤
Just listening to the first part of your video has me all emotional, because I also remember the fear and trepidation (and procrastination) I would have with starting a project and feeling like a complete amateur, but watching your videos these last couple of years has honestly, as cheesy as it may sound, been life changing in my outlook. Seeing you just dive in and be willing to do things you've never done before has inspired me to do the same. I feel like it's caused a mindset shift where I see possibility everywhere; instead of thinking "oh I don't think I can do that", I now think "I might not know how to do that, but I'm determined to learn and figure it out." Thanks for being so courageously creative and inspiring Macenna!
That means the world to me!!! I’m crying just reading your comment 💕
I think the black mocha will help those gorgeous black based lamps make sense in that room.
This video had a very different feel about it. You mention calm as your go to for colors and design, and it showed on your previous video style but this one really portrayed this feel. Especially with your message about fear and procrastination. You are wonderful! Thanks for your videos.
I absolutely love your videos. You are so inspiring. Since watching your videos I feel that I can actually accomplish making my new home a peaceful, cozy, and welcoming environment. Thank you for all of your videos, showing the good and the struggles with DIYing! ❤️
that maks me soooooo happy!
I’m so glad you mentioned the prep. I always say prep is 90% of the work and actual painting is 10%. I actually sand the walls lightly before I paint. You get litter paint bubbles from painting. Crazy.
Many years ago my family owned a small hotel. We had to wash the walls prior to painting, my dad insisted. The paint went on smoothly and only needed one coat. I wash the walls now before I paint. Prepping makes the painting part easy!
i’m so grateful i found your videos a few months ago. i love love love watching you each and every week and follow along in your life and projects both here and your vlog channel! you’ve created such a happy corner of the internet🤍
There is something truly special about you. You are so relatable and it really helps to see your process and struggles when I try to tackle projects. You are so talented and yet so real. Like I said. You are truly special ❤
I paused the video just to tell you how beautiful the new paint color looks next to the green peeking through in the window! I'm obsessed 😍
Right!!!!
Well I’m glad you didn’t give up on your art of creating and transforming and conquered your fears because you truly inspire me
And many others that faithfully follow you.
Thank you
Thank you so much!
Corbels are nice! It does give a heightened appearance to the doorways! Props for always making a design even better!
Really like the paint color.....and the color on the fireplace.....will really POP against the wall!! Your ambition.....is overwhelming!!!
I really like this therapeutic video format 😊 thanks for the empowering message at the beginning of the chapter, I feel very supported ❤❤❤
MaCenna I love the way you really dig deep into the entire process closing the perfect color for,the walls, the fireplace and front door color. This isn’t any different than an artist deciding on the palette for the art they are creating. I love the color you have chosen for the living room and the accent color for the fireplace, you were right to,choose the black that actually has more brown tones. I am NO EXPERT, I’m just learning from you and your Mom. Fear is totally a form procrastination I have it to this day and I am 72. I can never make a decision on the style I want and therefore my home isn’t what I want. Thank you for this video I thought it was amazing👏🏻👏🏻❤️❤️❤️
Love this video…sometimes you seem superhuman, but here you showed us you are just like the rest of us, trying our best to make our homes a reflection of ourselves in the best way that we can.
Yep, just rewatched this episode! MaCenna, this one was just pure goodness, obviously, but I loved your intro and outro! You let us into the mental process of creating a room organically, and that struck me! I especially connected with your ending comment about the overwhelm of home projects “what is the one thing I can do today to get closer to my end goals?” I truly teared UP with that, I needed to hear that and keep going on my personal path of updating my home. Thank you friend, for going through this and sharing your experience. It helped me respect you and adore you more! Can’t WAIT to see your progress! Xoxo
You really are an inspiration! I demoed, patched, sanded, and painted my walk in closet all by myself because of watching what you do! 💕
This was a beautiful video MaCenna! I loved the coziness to it! The voice over, anticipation and the tease with the fireplace! I can not wait to see what it fully looks like! 🤍
I love this video, really admire your willingness to let us into your head as you took on such challenging projects. You're really an inspiration. Please keep on dreaming!
I literally had to pause and comment - that intro was EVERYTHING!
It is amazing what a major difference paint can make, it really has warmed the room up beautifully !!! I agree prep is so time consuming and tedious but so necessary . I know from experience taking shortcuts on prepping makes a big difference in the end result.
The intro was so beautiful and inspiring. I love to see you change up your video styles. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
I’ve been watching your videos since 2020 and this was so inspiring. I relate to feeling stuffy in the corporate world and wanting to more with my hands. Leaving this I plan to be intentional with my time and build a space for myself to be creative. Thank you
What you said in this video, is a real treasure you could ever give to others, even over your amazing skills! So thank you so much for this video! (and i.m been watching a lot of then in just a few days!)
Happy Sunday MaCenna..you are truly a delight and give inspiration to all of us..Ive made window frames, sills just by watching you..Im building a potting table out of scrap wood, old window and an enamel wash bin as the sink.. you've given so much drive and inspiration never thought i could make things with my two hands.. Love you ❤
kinsley is the cutest little supervisor!! hehe I love how she watches everything you do with her little look of concern. your channel would not be the same with her :))
The previous arch accents were pairing so well with the fireplace 🥲 I loved to see them together but I believe whatever you’re planning will be even better and impressive as always
Love the colour, it makes the room more ‘cozy’
Beautifully said, Macenna 💚
I loved the slowness of this video, and you showing us how much care you wanted to put in each detail. I feel like you're going to make us love this home either the same or more than the cottage (something I thought would be impossible). The calm pace of the video set the tone for the feeling it looked like you were going for in the room.
Well said, very well said.
It's so so fun to watch the ideas that you have in your head come to life!! Can't wait to see the rest next week
AWW HOW CUTE KENSLEY WELCOME HER MAMA AT THE DOOR 😍 😍
I am still in awe of how much of the cottage YOU actually renovated. AND, used original materials, which made the renovation that much harder and more complicated. I believe you will often have these "pinch me" moments when you look back at the finished results and say, "did I really make the entire kitchen?? Did we really fix 40 plus vintage windows? ETC.!!
The intro ❤ so inspiring Macenna. So proud. I remember the glue gun days, you have learned so much and I have learned so much following you. ❤
You have inspired me so much. I barley use my glue gun anymore but I am buying tools! Thank you for sharing so much with us!
Don't think you need the corbel. The "Soft Arch" is beautiful in its simplicity. Paint it out and then readdress it.
Oh my gosh, Kinsley is attentively paying attention to your explanation about the corbels!!! Like a little student!
I love how your little doggie follows you around and listens to every word you say 😊
Literally inspiring! The way you explained fear and procrastination was just what I needed to hear thank you MaCenna 🥰 also love the color choice!!!!
You always inspire me so much to undertake my own projects, so happy to see you happy creating your home ❤
Macenna, I am watching Kingsley more than I’m watching you! Too much cuteness! Sending hugs to y’all! I couldn’t agree more with you fear by procrastination and thinking I can’t do it! Well watching you has been such inspiration! ❤
Wow, MaCenna. You have self-taught yourself in a way if never witnessed before. I'm a 62 year old artist and you amaze me!
