I'm in New Zealand on the opposite edge of the Pacific plate and I've got a great tip: get some earthquake wax aka museum wax. It's the stuff museums use to secure irreplaceable objects in case of earthquake. It's not permanent and non sticky but boy does it grip. Things are secure from a big shake but still easy enough to detach when you want to move stuff around. I've got a 9 foot shelf in my living room and everything is earthquake waxed into place.

I think that's pretty standard in California that everyone has everything waxed in place. Where I live we don't have earthquakes, but there's a very large military installation very nearby and I have silicone dots on the backs of my artwork, one in each corner, to help keep them from moving around on the walls. And anything on a shelf will walk off if not waxed in place. There are so many planes and helicopters, including the huge transport ones, flying over and when they train, the mortars really shake things up!

This seems to be such a common apartment layout so I truly think this could help inspire SO many people. It also shows how much you can do without changing the wall color and flooring due to renting. Beautiful MaCenna!! The divider turned out great and I love the warmth it brings. I do wish that you showed us the "after" in more of a wide angle so i could see the completed look all at once just like the "before" footage. I know its picky, but it's just so satisfying😂!! What an awesome makeover!!!!

Such a brillilant transformation Macenna! The apartment looked a little cold before with so much empty space in the middle. You've totally transformed it and given your friends such a warm, cosy, beautifully curated space . This is what good design is all about - even though this is not your own particular style, you've obviously taken your friends taste into consideration and given them a wonderful home.

My end tables were walnut and my bedroom set was similar to the sideboard. I also had a bar cart
I did not have the Sputnik chandelier though. I had pink in my kitchen. Couch was creamy tan with straight lines

I'm completely blown away by what you accomplished in this space, MaCenna! I'm a long-time viewer and admittedly not much of a commenter-but I have to say something about this transformation. The color palette is so warm and comforting while still feeling unexpected and unique. The space reads midcentury modern without feeling like you're in a midcentury showroom. It's a true testament to your hardworking and talent that you were able to create such an amazing space for your friend in a style that you yourself don't really lean to anymore. I'm constantly in awe of what you create.

Love love love all the color! MaCenna, what you’re talking about with the different shades of pink is called using various tints, tones, and shades of the color. It’s great color theory, and if anyone is curious on how to do this and make sure it matches: tint is when you add white to a color, tone is when you add gray, and shade is when you add black. If you’re introducing color into your space, I definitely recommend playing around on the color wheel so you can bring in more tints, tones, and shades into your color scheme to make it more dynamic, regardless of whether you want to go a monochromatic route or not! But of course, if using the exact same hue is your jam, go for it!! YOUR space should make YOU happy ☺️

MCM isn't my style, either, but I can appreciate good MCM design. This is pretty and practical and big on understated wow factor - thats the best kind! Your friend and her roommate must be so happy with that space. Please let us know what they decide to do about the light in the living room. I did a similar thing in our living room with a divider. It was way too long and we wanted our sofa closer to the TV so we used a 3rd of the space as the living area, put my Expedict shelves, or whatever the new one is called, from Ikea behind the sofa. and used the rest of the space as my office space. Works well and feels cosy. I just love that you went that extra DIY mile and built your own! Once you perfect the plans you should definitely sell them or at least work with a furniture store to sell your own range :)

So lovely to see the extension cord DIY explained so succinctly!! I feel like it's worth adding that *your extension cable also has one hot and one neutral wire,* and it is ESSENTIAL for safety to make sure the right cords are matched when you rewire your scone to plug in :)

Such a transformation omg!! I would love to have seen those hanging blinds plucked off and a new set of curtains though! Coming from someone who has lived in an apartment most of my life, that always makes a world of a difference!

Never realized how easy it would be to turn a ceiling fixture into a plug in!!! I am so doing this in my livingroom where there is no overhead lighting!! Genius!

Thanks for this!!ni love watching all your personal spaces come to life! My personal style is mostly Mid Century Modern and I haven’t come across many RUclips videos on it, so this was so special to see you do!
