The fact that the Taft boots (or at least two of the three models) are so unique makes any comparison with more conventional styles pretty difficult. The Dylan and Jack v. the Cap and Prez, it's kind of apples and oranges, stylistically speaking.
I wear both brands, I find that I tend to wear the Thursdays daily and the Tafts at events. I will say this… the Taft are better quality but when you factor in price point, it evens out.
I bought a pair of Thursday Captains recently and they are genuinely as comfortable as people say they are. I live in Europe, so the value isn't quite as good (with shipping and taxes included) but they are still worth the money.
That's good to hear. I stand pretty much all day at work, so comfort is important and was worried. However, it seems like most people don't have any issue with comfort.
@@KelkohTV well, i got the thursday captains and i was sorely disappointed with the comfort and quality. it looks very nice. the arch support is not good and the heel is very stiff to walk on.
Man, those Tafts are wild. They're not all my style, but I definitely give respect to anyone who's doing something distinctly different. Earlier this year I was able to pick up a pair of the discontinued Chippewa Brentwood Homestead boots in the "cuero" leather. Sort of Chippewas answer to the Iron Ranger, though it has its own style. I have to say, they've really worked out great. You should check them out if you can still find a pair.
I agree with you. I love the unique styles from Taft, but I can't justify spending $300 on something I will only be able to wear with one specific outfit or to one specific event a year
I'd wear the Jack once in a blue moon to certain events, and I'd be stoked to wear 'em. In the right situation, they'd look great and turn heads, for sure. Although those situations might not come up super often in my life, but still. I suppose I'd get more use out of the Dylan, which looks great.
I own both pairs and have for a while. To be completely honest this isn't even a fair comparison. This is like comparing a Ferarri to a Corvette, both amazing cars but for most the Ferarri is in a class by itself. The Dragon boots from Taft are pretty much perfect. Best leather I have ever had in a pair of boots, seriously that waxy commander leather feels and looks indestructible and is absolutely beautiful. I have worn them daily for over 3 months at one point last Fall and they were extremely comfortable and still look amazing. I like my Thursday captains, they are nice but just an average looking boot. The dragon boots are on another level and look so much better and feel much better. The extra money is worth it for the Taft Dragon boots.
Just want to comment here for the ladies - I've had 2 pairs of women's Thursday's, both fell apart. I got terrible longevity out of them, even compared to Doc Martens. They build the men's boots differently and better. Just a note for anyone wondering.
This was an interesting (and pretty uneven) comparison, but at least you're giving both brands credit for quality where some others might play favorites for whatever reason. I own two pairs of Taft Jack boots (and a couple pairs of their dress shoes), but mine are way less gaudy than the pair you bought. I have them in contrasting black suede + black leather cap/heel and grey wool + burgundy cap/heel. The black has the same outsole as your pair, but the grey has a black rubber outsole. There are(were?) tons of color options from straightforward to crazier than even what you have. I still like and wear them after having owned them for around 7 years, but they don't work with everything bc they do feel a bit dressy, especially the grey pair. I want a more regular/everyday use boot so I've been researching Thursday boots. It's very likely that I'll be buying the Captain in the near future. I'm kind of sad the Taft Dragon is no longer being produced, though. I would've liked to have had the option to decide between the two.
I love most boots. I have the Jack in Eden and love it. It’s definitely a unique boot and I would never say something is bad just because I don’t like it. The Taft Dilan is not for me but I wouldn’t crap on it. I also have a couple of Thursdays and I’m very happy with them. I don’t think Taft and Thursdays are in the same category though.
I am not a huge fan of the Taft Jacks you have, but looking on their site, they have some really cool fabric / leather combinations. Very unique. I have a set of Thursday dark oak wingtips on the way. I was looking at getting some Captains, but I may have a look at the Taft boots as well.
For the quality Thursday boots are the best. Sizing and price and design and build quality are the best. My go to boots. I looked at the Taft website. Their boots are made for the GQ crowd... To each his own. I still enjoy your videos very much. I like how you take different types of boots to compare.
6:09 Some of Taft boots like the owner has said. Is stuff even he wouldn't personally wear. But he is getting inspiration from the community and able to go all out. And the way to think about some of these are Event Party Boots. Its not something to wear all the time. But its one way for men to have fun with how understated out wardrobe is.
Love my taft boots, price point is crazy but I just bought some on black Friday at a price of 160, and Instagram shopping gave and extra10% and I'm definitely ok with that.
From what I’ve seen - Taft boots are absolutely beautiful and that makes a lot of guys feel like they are too loud to wear with jeans or casually - but frankly, dudes dress casually too often. Going out to a show? Dress like a rock star. Going out to a movie? Dress like you’re attending a premiere. T-shirts and jeans are nice for wearing at home or at a hole in the wall bar, but there are plenty of excuses to dress to impress - for example a place where there are women (or men, depending on which way you swing) to impress . Honestly, this lecture need not be given to members of the LGBTQ community as gay men have known for a long time that weddings and offices aren’t the only places one can wear an expensive suit. It’s a stereotype but gay men do tend to know how to dress to impress. If you’re a straight guy and are ever told that someone assumed you might be gay because of how well you dress, then consider that the height of style compliment. 😂
I think the Taft Jack is a nice looking boot. I like how unique it looks and no matter what you're wearing you can wear it with a nice blue pair of bootcut jeans where the side panel and the leather cap toe only shows. I have two pairs of Captains. First one is Classic Black and the second one is the Arizona Adobe. imo AA's is much better padded in the forefoot than the Classic black. Come to find out, the R&R line has a leather midsole whereas the classic has the duraeva so I like the cushion more on the AA's.
Great video Billy. That Taft Dylan does look fantastic. I like some of the more tame Taft Jack or Troy colors. If you had to choose the Thursday Blue Suede Captain or the Taft Blue Troy what would you get?
I've bought both the Major in black from Thursday and the Jack boot (In Oxblood and Grey as well as Eden Noir.) From my experience, the Major fits more as an "every day" boot, it feels more rugged and willing to take a beating, when in a more casual setting they can be dressed down easier. Not to mention that after months of use they still have a strong fresh leather smell. Meanwhile, the Jack boot (both versions) definitely feel more delicate, not in their construction but more so in how you'd go about treating and maintaining them. I feel they do have a more elegant look to them and just make you feel more sharply dressed. I highly recommend both of them, but I think for most people who want a well rounded versatile boot, Thursday might be the better of the two.
I am watching your video for the second time and realized that you said the cavalier is $199 but it’s actually $190. The legend and the Duke are $199. Lol. Great video.
I'm curious if you have tried the Canada West WM. Moorby. It's a service boot made in Canada. I imagine it is the same price point as Thursday boots but made in North America (if that means anything to you). I have owned a pair for just a couple of months but I am impressed. I chose the over RW Iron Rangers because they seemed better constructed and a fair bit cheaper.
Nothing from Thursday is really comparable to the dragon or the viking or the gladiator from taft. Taft also makes some really awesome sneakers. Thursday has one pair of sneakers and they are pretty much as basic as it gets. The captain has a fake toe cap and an off brand outsole. The only thing that keeps Thursday in the same conversation is that they are a little less than $100 cheaper.
I’ve never tried Taft boots. I’m not a fan of the Blake stitching. For the price of a Taft Dragon, I’m better off with a Red Wing Iron Ranger, or Wolverine 1000 Mile with the rubber soles. I have two complaints about Thursday Boots. One, the heels are too high. My foot slides forward when I am walking downhill. I have had to get the heels lowered before they are comforatble. Two, the raised studs on the soles can be VERY slippery on a smooth surface, like polished stone or concrete. Initially, only the raised studs make contact with the ground with a new pair of boots.
@@BootSpy I have never tried the Storm King soles, but I suspect that I would like them. I wear loggers all the time. My problem with the standard heel and soles is that my foot is angled downward and forward. I really like the standard sole used in the Wolverine BLVD collection. Definitely order a size down for the cap toe and plain toe boots. The Chelsea and Zip boots should be ordered true to size.
I have the thursday captain and love them. The only thing I am mad about is that the heel life is almost gone after 4 months. Ok . I do walk bad on my left side but still they should have lasted at least a year.
Enjoy your videos. The President boot looks well loved. I would like to see you do a video on cleaning and conditioning that boot. I own 2 Thursday boots and agree they are a great value. Hoping to get the President in tobacco.
I am going to be honest here and say that Taft Jack looks like a women's boot. I would be embarrassed to wear it any where. No offense just being honest.
You've worn a lot of boots. Just brainstorming here..."Frankenstein" design your "ultimate boot." For example: Thorogood's wedge sole, Red Wing's leather and stitching, Thursday's profile, with a Taft color. Sort of a "who does blah the best" in your opinion. Then prepare for the "just buy Nick's" in the comments.
I bought Taft shoes and they suck! I was so excited to get them I bought several styles of shoes and boots from Taft. Sadly the toe of the Taft black Troy boots peeled after only wearing them 3 times. I am very disappointed. I am not impressed with Taft. Their boots make a pretty picture but they fall apart. The material on the toe that came off was so thin and cheap!.
I think Thursday boots soles are hard as a rock and disgraceful to a true dainite sole . I can’t believe you like the Thursday sole better then the real dainite , even tho it’s a ridgeway the rubber is just so much better on the Taft sole .
