Thank you for recording these conversations. They are an important record of one of our greatest poets. Gary is getting on in years. It's good to see him still spry and sharp. After he is gone, we all will need these to remind us....
Gary may be responsible for Han Shan's resurgence in China, and he for sure is responsible for many readers finding Han Shan in America. I had read some of Han Shan's work, but Gary's translation was more extensive and captured my attention due to Gary's stature at that time (mid-seventies) as a counter-cultural poet and thinker. Thanks Ping, for your mellifluous reading of the Chinese originals. I've heard Chinese spoken but never heard Chinese poetry 'til now. To know how the hatchet flies, you just have to throw it. To articulate it is another thing. Or like Gary says later, "Art makes you see things that you should have seen anyway."
Gary has been an inspiration and grounding to me since I was around 15 and still is in my 30's. I was lucky enough to meet Gary a few years ago at a reading in Chicago. He was so kind and insightful and our meeting will always be a blessing to me. Thank you so much for this wonderful video!
Thank you Wang Ping, Gary, & Steve! I’ve really enjoyed the photos, discussions, & readings! I’m currently re-reading Snyder’s “Back on the Fire,” now ever more relevant to us here on the dry side of North Cascades after a summer of two massive wildfires in our neighborhood.
WOW, how lucky are we all to witness the afternoon reading here! Just discovered your channel. Gary's teachings ripples so uniquely through the twines of our global, unfolding wreath. I once wrote him an email and he so kindly entertained a reply. I would have hoped to tell him that he inspired me to read and write my own poetry, and show him in person. Always grateful for his work. Wang Ping, from Vancouver Canada, 多谢了! Your description of the axe photograph did remind me of Alcover: "You who imprison the dragonfly in the/frames of rhyme,/Who grasp it so delicately by the wings/That not an atom of their shimmering/fragility is lost."
thanks so much! yes, that's exactly the moment of dragonfly! There are other videos in my channel about Gary and his poems, and we plan to record more in spring. please subscribe and stay in touch. I'll relay your message to Gary. what's your name?
