- A selection of poems from Hanshan - formatted for meditation. Translated by A. S. Kline.
The poet Hanshan 寒山, a name meaning “Cold Mountain,” ranks as one of the most eccentric and mysterious figures of Chinese literature. He is said to have lived during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), dwelling in a cave or hut in Tiantai Mountain near modern-day Taizhou, Zhejiang. In Chinese and Japanese art, he is often depicted as dirty and raggedy, smiling mischievously with his friend Shide 拾得. His poetry, written in a direct, colloquial style, was satirical and spiritual, touching on both Buddhist and Daoist themes. Hanshan also wrote poems about his own life, but his real identity is completely unknown. His name, in fact, is a pseudonym that refers to a place in Tiantai Mountain. In the Chinese Buddhist tradition, Hanshan and his sidekick Shide are honored as emanations of the bodhisattvas Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra, respectively. Little is known of his work, since he was a recluse living in a remote region and his poems were written on rocks in the mountains he called home.

I listen to your readings every night, and every night I wonder at all this beauty. Thank you so very much, dear Sister.
"Sweet to know there is nothing I need."
Strikes right at the heart.
Simply beautiful.
"who can escape the snares of the world and come to sit with me among the white clouds".......... i wish i could, bud, wish i could
Truly beautiful. It could have been written a year ago, or a hundred. We see it could be around 1400 years ago. Timeless.
Thank you! I was going to ask you if you could read some of these. This is exactly what I needed today.
Chattering finch and water-fly
Are not merrier than I;
Here among the flowers I lie
Laughing everlastingly.
No: I may not tell the best;
Surely, friends, I might have guessed
Death was but the good King's jest,
It was hid so carefully.
G.K. Chesterton
What a wonderful poem!! Thank you for sharing this finding with us!!
I am in love with your voice for meditation. My mind doesn't feel the same unless it you. I felt so relaxed that had a breakdown after meditation session. But since I have just started and really want to be in a regular schedule of meditating, I would like to ask if there is any 20 min guided meditation!
I am so grateful to God that I found you mam. Thankyou so much for your efforts ❤️🙏
Glad you are benefitting Parul. Yes, these 2 shorter meditations are excellent for practice:

Flee the burning house and ascend Cold Mountain.
Wonderful. I was just discussing with a friend on the path: who's the idiot. this meditation brings a bit of the cloud covered cold mountains home.
I appreciate you so so much, thank you.☺😍
I'm older than you, but it seems like your spoon feeding me, Mom.
With the respect that word deserves, for the total attention Moms give.
The wisdom he has to know that he can not show anyone the path because all hearts and minds are unique is divine. Loved that very much
I've been experiencing illness, and find great comfort in the beauty of this poetry and it's loving presentation. Thank you so very much.

Totally agree with you!
Thanks it's the liberation and way of gazing in the present moment.oneness of nature definately activates the inner space.
This is how I want to live the latter part of my life
Left the world behind, but still writing poems. Thanks for thinking of us haha
"In bad weather you won't make this climb," as well as, I'm sure, every line or other line seems to be written with plural or parallel meaning. One that comes out in that particular line is "clouded with earthly attachments and unbridled aggressions, appetites and animosities, you cannot a ascend to higher consciousness." It would be very enriching to have a bilingual scholar of both classical Chinese and poetry in particular to elucidate two other layers of meaning hidden for us by a mere translation: 1. verbal or (unique to Chinese) visual play and polysemy within the original lines that may feature complications, exceptions, caveats or ramifications to the overt meaning of the lines (mind you, even overt meaning can be hard to translate due to a term having two or more equally competing denotations in the original); 2. cultural/historical reverberations of key references in the poem that will add further understading of the poet's context and hence potential targets of communication.
I often come back to this poem
