  • Kōbun Otogawa (乙川 弘文, Otogawa Kōbun) (February 1, 1938 - July 26, 2002) was an Sōtō Zen priest. Otogawa, who preferred to be called by his first name, rather than by either of the Japanese Zen honorifics: sensei (teacher) or roshi (master), came to San Francisco, California, United States, from Japan in 1967 in response to an invitation from Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, serving as his assistant at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center until 1970.
Otogawa was the son of a Sōtō Zen priest and was ordained a priest himself at the age of 12. He did undergraduate studies at Komazawa University and received a master's degree in Mahayana Buddhism from Kyoto University. He then trained for three years at Eiheiji. Among his primary teachers was the unconventional Zen master Kodo Sawaki, known as the last of the unsui, or wandering monks.
A story told of Otogawa encapsulates the essence of his Dharma teachings:
"When all the teachers are gone, who will be your teacher?"
    The student replied: "Everything!"
Kobun paused, then said: "No, you.
These selections of Kobun's teachings have been taken from various texts and quotes, including the main source of his teachings, "Embracing Mind: The Zen Talks of Kobun Chino Otogawa". Edited by Judy Cosgrove and Shinbo Joseph Hall
Music by Swami Madhuram Puri. With thanks to Swami for his kind offering of his exquisite music for this channel.

Funny isn’t it, years of ‘not good enough’ practice then when there is finally practice that’s ‘not good enough’ either 😂😊❤

This turns up at a time today of great awareness for me of the loss of a loved one and the pain of attachment. I can do nothing but sit.

Your breath will only leave you at the end. Now your breath is everything. Sorry for your recent loss.

This hit home. People often ask me to explain these things. I hesitate because there is so much to say, and I feel I don't understand it enough to try and teach them about it. Yet I see them struggling with life and think that it may help them. I seem to always be caught between.

Sometimes I think about the collective wisdom in this channel's archives ~ like a concentrated light source.
I'm old & trying to recall how folks in scary parts of human history have kept their eyes on Truth, Peace & the reality of impermanence.
      Blessings to everyone.

Samaneri Jayasara thank you for all the effort you put into finding true and practical teachings from many traditions.
I’m not sure if you take requests but if I may suggest one piece: Ajaan Dune Atulo’s (1888-1983) “The Heart is Knowing” - I get a sense that the section which is titled THE METHOD OF DEVELOPING BAVANA would fit well in the style of format you make your videos in.
It’s straight to the heart of the teachings, and short enough where you could keep your trademark slow paced style filled with gaps of meditative music (which I absolutely love lol). Again, thank you for all that you do and no worries if this is a suggestion you pass up 🙏🏼
