Namaste' Gary....40 yrs ago I had the immense pleasure to ''hang out'' a bit with you in Missoula Montana...you were then a huge infuence on my directions in life and still are. I am so happy to see you in good health and still with the same Sane down to earth vibe and vision. Mucho Gracias
I once sent him an email when he was at US Davis asking him how much of his character Japhy Ryder, in Jack Kerouac's book 'Dharma Bums' represented him in real life, he actually responded. His book 'Turtle Island' was my introduction to him and I still to this day reflect on so many of his other writings. Thank you so much for sharing this will us all.
I had the good fortune to meet Gary a few years back and told him how a line in one of his poems (Night Highway 99 in Mountains and Rivers Without End) helped convince me to change careers - "The road that's followed goes forever; in half a minute crossed and left behind". Thank you Ping for posting this chat with my all time favorite poet.
Thank you so much for sharing. I was fortunate enough to have Gary sign one of his books for me many moons ago at an Illinois Wesleyan reading. His humility and passion continue to inspire me to this day. 🙏
I was Gary's neighbor on Shady Creek in the early 70s...my oldest son was born just downstream from Gary's land. I played music at Gary's Bathouse poetry readings back then and it warms my heart to see him still there. I heard his wife Masa passed a while back (correction...thankfully I was misinformed apparently she's well) . Great writer along with Terry Marquez an Peter Blue Cloud....great memories I have of those days.
@@wangping2857 I'm so glad if she's still around because I had heard this many years ago. I have no first hand knowledge of her passing...an old friend told me. I sincerely hope it's not true. I was living in Taiwan when I heard it. I really treasure those days in the 70s when I lived there...thank you for interviewing Gary ..I've subscribed to your channel and will watch more content soon. The San Juan Ridge is a special place.
Yes yes! Thank you. One of my favorite happenings in following both Gary Snyder & Wendell Berry was there exchange of letters from their respective homesteads called Distant Neighbors. So cool to see kitkitdizze as I imagined much of it from those letters.
Thank you Ping for this. Very enjoyable. Gary lives up in the old gold rush country, I wonder what he has to say, if anything, about the writings of Bret Harte. I look forward to your discussion on Riprap--probably my favorite of Gary's work. Thank you again.
The June/July 1982 issue of Fine Homebuilding magazine (a sibling publication to Fine Woodworking) had an article about the construction of Kitkitdizze written by Jeff Gold and Bruce Boyd who worked as foremen on the project. The issue can be found here: [[NOTE: Unfortunately it appears the RUclips won’t let me include the link in the comments. If you a Google “Fine homebuilding gary snyder” it will point you to the archives pages for Fine Homebuilding where the issue and article can be found.]] The article is on pg 43. (P.S. To answer Gary’s question in the video, according to the article Kitkitdizze was built during the summer of 1970.)
Gary says 45 years isn't a long time, but to old men staring AI poems in the face...it seems like an eternity. For example: Trail Markers Under pine shade, a deer path fades into rocks. Quartz gleams, shards of an ancient stream, holding the sun. The wind whispers a map older than paper- follow the moss. Step softly
was it Mary Collier of Muir Beach who you were referring to about the acorns with the native Americans of California? She wrote a book, a friend of yours.
Speaking of gold rush country, these glimpses you give us of Gary and Kitkitdizze are themselves pure gold. Thank you.

yes, I feel so fortunate to do this work.
I love Gary Snyder work. What a treat. Thank you! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🫶
wonderful to see where Mr. Snyder has done so much of his writing (and living)! Thank you for sharing with us all...

Wonderful, but HOW did he respond? Thanks.
Very interesting. And Ping, you’re looking so beautiful!

In my bookcase I have a volume of Garys poetry. Some poems were about logging in Oregon. Great poetry! Greetings from Sweden.
Lovely interview
Thankyou Ping and Gary 🙏
Wonderful conversation. I haven't heard Gary speak since last spring I think. I'm refreshed with his knowledge.

Oh no, really?
She was in good health last time I saw her.

Maybe M. Kat Anderson?
Author of a book about California's native's traditional ecological knowledge.
