Wonderful. I'm not a poet. But when i discovered Axe Handles in 1984 when i was 26 in the steel factory rust belt of westernNY and it's glacial moraines, my life changed. I finally saw possibilities. Gary's words spoke directly to a part of me that was sleeping so far in my life and i woke up. Everything he has written is on my bookshelf read. Gary's writings gave me energy, gave me courage, gave me a direction. I ended up in Asia for a decade studying Buddhism & Hinduism, ended up married to a Cambodian and lived there. I ended up having a unique life. I met Gary breifly In Kenyon Ohio as he exited his talk in 1990 but i was suddenly struck with shyness. I saw him again in Buffalo NY in 2002 after just arriving back in America & went to see him with my wife and my 11 month old son, Tenzin. Again i experienced shyness and did not talk with him. In 1990 i built a yurt and lived for two years in the forest before leaving for Asia and there i sent two letters to Gary in which i covered the envelopes in Australian aboriginal copied art style. I have wanted to write to him for years. I haven't and at 64 and an organic vegetable farmer i am tired. I want to thank Gary Snyder form the depths of my heart for showing me how to live, not that i did well, but in my mind, i did.

I love your story. I got Rip Rap when i was 14 in 1960. His poems of Han Shan were the hammer and nails i built my life with. I stopped construction long ago ... now i just sit and look at the moon while the moon looks at me.

Gary Snyder carries on the tradition and concerns of the beat poets without freaking out on drugs or chanting Om half naked to promote justice, peace and harmony.

You said it, amigo. Gary's modest Muse dredged up countless souls from the slough despond and despair.

In this vide Gary suggests Ezra Pound and labour politics are key influences in his early days, much is made of his eco, beat and zen connections but this is just as important; they all form the whole that is this great man. Well done to LoA for bringing this definitive publication to life for all future generations, and this video.

Love Ping's reading and talk. Time traveling is in the mind is in the now. On the trail of a thought of a gesture.
