    • @eddiek8179
      @eddiek8179 4 месяца назад +2

      @@TheNefariousFox The irony of someone so utterly bereft of critical thinking calling someone else lacking brains is stupendous. Don't be disingenuous - Valerian has more than 2 characters that occupy the movie. There are multiple of characters in there with a lot of screen time. Snyder had to rush to fit the 7 in the story? Really? You do realize an ensemble in a movie is pretty normal, right? One where they have tons more characters than this movie and they could do justice with the characters, right?
      Both Magnificent 7s (where Snyder cribs from) had multiple characters and they managed to do more than fine. Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Oceans ELEVEN, Knives Out, Inception, Dune, Tropic Thunder, Pulp Fiction are just some of the examples of movies succeeding with multiple characters with even more dynamic and complex plots than Rebel Moon. Snyder has a skill issue. Actually, scratch that - he has MANY skill issues. Stop simping for an incompetent director. The main reason he couldn't give screen time to the characters to breathe is because he spent so much unnecessary time on slow motion shots on unnecessary moments as well as having characters meander while speechifying. Warhammer 40K is an aesthetic - it can occupy any scene simultaneously without interruption. Why should an aesthetic need more runtime or displace character moments? You really know nothing about film, do you?

    Just got done watching the film after being very interested so I haven't digested my thoughts properly yet but I will say I didn't find the film to be fulfilling at all and some stuff had me going "huh?" like the officers uniforms. The soldiers gear and how it went from golden to gritty was a nice touch but the officers uniforms were to "Third Reich" on the nose for me and I know a lot of stories, Star Wars being the number one, take inspirations from the WW2 Germans but they make it work where as the Imperium looks to campy. @husman2007 You totally missed my point. However, you might be right about character development. No, I want it done right from the beginning. The script is the first step. Production companies and producers are fully aware of who they hire and how much they budget for these projects. Yes of course they even go over budget. Even Micheal Bay has paid some of his own salary on the first Bad Boys. Please give me two examples of shows that cost 100 million per episode. I assume they have a lousy executive producer or an A+ gold standard show with ultra extravagant set pieces and four A list actors. Exactly how I felt. Wasted potential. It often teased depth, but in the end it was just so hollow. It was like watching a fantasy starring the action firgures of a highly imaginative and creative child. Only the child is just interested in throwing the characters together and confidently presenting them as a team that has formed a hard-won bond. Anyway, the visuals were stunning. But plot and character developement recieved the least amount of attention. And it is a little insane that the one aspect that could have used some of that "slow motion" was the relationships between each member of the team. The movie either fastforwarded or skipped through most of it. Didn't hate it, but not a very noteworthy film.

It's got visual flashes of John Carter, a smattering of Firefly, a pinch of Star Wars, perhaps a Robotech (Macross) Zentradi ship, a tiny hint of 5th Element, a marketplace reminiscent of Blade Runner, maybe a moment of Vampire Hunter D in the rain, and lots more odds and ends that looked like they could be paying homage to other popular genre classics.

Sure, Balisarius might have been driving all of that, but the King was still in charge. How did things change when he was slain? I don't think anything changed.

    I have to give Zack Snyder his props.....he made this visually stunning movie for 80 million. That's 1/3rd the cost of what he's used to with these types of movies. The movie has a few scenes that could've benefited from a higher budget.

    • @themanofshadows
      @themanofshadows 4 месяца назад +1

      The Creator also only cost $80 million and was visually stunning as well. The real problem with CGI nowadays is that the artists don’t have enough time to properly work on the SFX with all the reshoots and tight deadlines (MCU for example).

    • @freddiemac327
      @freddiemac327 4 месяца назад

      @@themanofshadows "The creator" was nicely done visually. Impressive. The story was kinda boring, but I still liked it. I'll watch it again some day. There's a couple differences between the 2 films. "The Creator" 's team was smarter to keep the film more grounded. That's not really possible with a Space movie traveling from planet to planet. The 2nd main difference is we got to see "The creator" in all it's glory. Rebel Moon part one is actually two movies for the price of one. A 3 hour long movie for the real version.......and an edited down 2 hour version to fulfill the PG-13 obligation.
      As it stands right now, "The creator" using the less is more approach worked out better. Doing a huge CGI overall like Rebel moon for under 200 million was never going to work. Keep in mind......for about 170 million, Netflix is releasing 4 Rebel moon movies. 2 PG-13 versions and the Rated R director's cuts to each. Both with a reported runtime of 3 hours.

    This reminded me of Battle Beyond the Stars, the George Peppard/Robert Vaughn Star Wars-ish movie from 1980.
    While the movie was okay I guess, and an improvement over Army of the Dead, it doesn't do scale very well. It feels like the universe has like 500 people in it. Outside that one shot of the king in front of the troops, everything feels so small.
    They catch the most wanted criminals in the universe and the Admiral brings like 20 guys with him. Oh, and the gunner apparently had a lever that can crash a big ship, that was silly too

    Ed Skrein was pretty terrifying. Compared to the sort of wooden performance as Darrias in GOT this role really popped.
    I cant help but wonder if the resemblance of the male protagonist to the actor that replaced him was some kind of easter eggy joke.

    I don't think it's fair for anyone on the planet, to be compared to George Lucas, the guy is a genius.

      He's a terrible writer. Seems like an appropriate comparison.

      Yeah like he took ideas from Frank Herbert and Isaac Asimov to merge with Flash Gordon and some historical references. Both of them are good at being derivative in creating their context.

      @@MtpMuzik I love Star Wars as a universe. I've seen, read, played or listened to everything with a story in that universe. The original trilogy were a collaboration of ideas, though and despite cartoons and a bunch of books/comics smoothing the Prequel era over, I still think those three movies are terribly written and the main character was poorly acted.

      Right?

    Many thanks to Ryan, Matt and Rachell! 🌒 The overuse of slow-motion and much of Snyder's style... doesn't resonate for me. But I liked a lot about it. Not sure I'll *ever* re-watch it. I will certainly watch the sequel.

    The contrast between building this 'team' and the way SW builds it's team is drastic! When they/we first meet Han and Chewie in ANH we don't have to trust them - and Obi-wan doesn't, which is why he's coy about 'avoiding any imperial entanglements" rather than telling them their real goal! They only need Han to adhere to their transport contract. Its only later, after using a potential reward to convince him to help and after they survive a harrowing escape together and have a bit of a bonding experience, that Luke increases his expectations of Han (and Leia doesn't even then; she's not surprised he's leaving with his reward). Han takes practically his entire portion of the movie to become trustworthy!

    Just watched Rebel Moon... It was fun, action packed and the ending was unexpected. Snyder delivered. Haters and nitpickers will do what they do. Looking forward to pt. 2

      Idk about synder delivered. Im only an hour in and the movie is almost everything critics have been saying and im a synder fan that was looking forward to this. I just cant with the lack of storytelling and trying to make up for it with over stylized visuals and hella slow motion scenes.

      Delivered on what? The rushed plot? The stale characters with zero development? The abuse of slow mo? The nonsensical crap like "spear beats warship"? The poor dialogue or lack of it? This movie was fucking awful.
