I'm a dad with a single income household and I could never justify even a hundred on a pedal, but I can rationalize spending 20-50 on a pedal for myself for a special thing, which is the pedals I have. If I didn't have those options, I wouldn't have any pedals.

Absolutely, I can’t see myself spending 700 bucks for 7 pedals while I could put that money to something else. These cheap pedals like the behringer pedals and Amazon basics pedals work out great. I just wish other brands would have some sort of budget friendly line of pedals(25-50 dollar each pedal).

I think that in the long term, these might actually help companies like JHS. Lowering the cost barrier of entry for guitar pedals grows the consumer base and eventually those consumers will want to upgrade. Kinda like the dealer on the corner and the first fix being free, gear junkies need their gear fix. This is the gateway gear that gets them hooked.

There's also an aspect of availability. Sitting in Pakistan I don't have easy access to your and other pedals as much as I want. essentially because of taxes the 3 series woidl cost me almost 250 with shipping. nux tomsline and brands like those are available here and the willingness of those companies to come to Pak is also to be admired. Saying that I sample an effect with a nux and decide maybe invest and buy something from the states with all the hassle that comes with it but knowing I want that type. I.e. I learned I'm not a tube screamer fan now and won't waste money and time figuring out how to get one here

@@patrickfoster4586 America is the land of Guitar, Rock and Roll, and surely IS the king for Electric Guitars and Amps, but my point about Tone was more philosophical. The people amazon is squeezing out disagree.
Amazon has other people take risk to build a market, then they take the best marketing info from those risk-taking entrepreneurs and drives them out of business by marketing directly against them on the Amazon platform. It has happened thousands of times already.

I stumbled onto NUX a while back & have since bought a handful of their pedals. IMO they make the best pedals from China. The Tape Core Deluxe is an incredible stereo RE-201 clone, with hidden settings for wow & flutter. The Verdugo series pedals are top notch, especially the JTC pro looper (6 hours record time, STEREO input, drum machine, load backing tracks into it from your computer, save to computer, cab emulator, amazing for the price). As for drives, first I bought the Horseman, then Tube Man, then wanting a blues breaker style I got the Morning Star. I have read on the internet that if you look inside KOKKO pedals, you find NUX printed on the PCB. I believe they make their best stuff as NUX, then re-brand with cheaper parts & manufacturing as KOKKO, & that is also now rebranded as AmazonBasics. Do yourself a favor & check out the nicer pedals from NUX you will be very surprised at the specs, price, & sound.

Guitar pedal sales are like a liquor store, you don't need liquor to survive, but when you have a desire, it's there. At the liquor store looking at the whiskey isle you have the top shelf whiskeys with the fancy bottles and great reviews, and the bottom shelf good for getting you drunk. JHS is top shelf whiskey with a storied history, Amazon basics is bottom shelf gut punch, or those little bottles of booze they have behind the counter for a quick fix. Also, people now are nostalgic about the Silvertone crap they bought at Sears, in 40 years we'll be waxing poetically about these.

I believe these pedals will make the “boutique” pedal companies in the long run. Think of these pedals as an entry level Squier. The one thing you can count on is that people who play guitar love to upgrade equipment. When they find the pedals they like and play for a bit they will want to upgrade to the more expensive “boutique” pedals of that effect type.

I’ve just taken delivery of an Amazon Basics Booster Pedal. ($23!) It may not be made by robots… but hand made… lots of flux residue on the PC Board, board also has been manually cut to fit in casing. Pots (plastic shafts) and footswitch are low cost/quality parts, I broke the foot switch mechasim while disassembling (fixed though). It’s built on an 4580 dual op-amp IC, with adjustable low and high pass filtering. It also has a gang of symmetrical hard clipping diodes, on the output of one of the amps. When you crank up the gain these will clip at +/- 2.1v (assuming silicon). It also looks like their is a transistor buffer on the output. Quite a nice circuit overall. Sound wise I’ve only an EH LBP to compare against, much simpler circuit no tone controls so not like for like. Obviously I ‘feel’ I’m getting a cleaner boost from the EH pedal - no diodes, no tone coloring. Why did I buy it? I had an Amazon token as compensation for a late delivery, as you can only spend them on Amazon products I bought an Amazon pedal. Will it last forever and become vintage - I really don’t think it will survive that long as all that extra flux is corrosive?

Nu-x (new ex) make some mighty pedals for the price. I've got their Roctary pedal which is a Leslie speaker pedal with octaves, so you can make your guitar sound like a Hammond organ. Actually the octave part is fairly useless (though not bad on keyboards), but the Leslie speaker simulation is simply incredible, it's even got a drive control, so you can push the sound into a bit of overdrive.
I've also got a Tape Core Deluxe, which is Nu-x's version of the Roland Space Echo. You can switch between all seven tape head combinations and it's got that great warm, tapey break-up sound. It's also got tap tempo and a loop function, and you can do that wild spacey tape feedback stuff. Both of these pedals are stereo and cost me $125 (Australian) which is about eighty bucks US, maybe a tad more. Insanely good value -- even if the English translations on their instruction manuals leave you completely and utterly confused.

Sears was the biggest retailer at the time and was the Amazon of the mid-20th century. My first amp was a Silvertone which was really a Danelectro because Sears. So this was going on for decades. Today Silvertone stuf sells on the vintage market along with Harmony, Danelectro, and Kay which was all stuff sold to Sears labeled as Silvertone. All the mail-order companies like Montgomery Ward did the same thing. So nothing is new under the sun.

I'm 56. I recently got back into playing the guitar again. I don't have a ton of money to buy gear, so I watch a lot of RUclips videos to get ideas on what I can get that's pretty good for a decent price. I watch this channel alot, I get the real skinny here, no BS. I have a Monoprice all tube combo amp I bought on Amazon for $250 delivered to my door, it's great. I used to build amps as a hobby and know alot about them and have made some really cool ones, but I get good tones from it, period, and it was half what just the parts would cost to build one. I bought 3 pedals so far on Amazon - A Demon Tube screamer clone, which has a switch for ts9 / ts808, which does nothing, because the circuits are basically the same, a Mosky magnetic delay, and a Flamma multi modulation pedal. I also got a nice Ibanez 335 clone and upgraded the tuners and pickups, I spent less than a grand on all this stuff and I am getting great sounds. As I continue buying pedals, I am going to get a JHS one at some point, because I feel like I owe it to him for all the great free info. Based on Josh's Univibe video, I just bought an Electro Harmonix Good Vibes pedal on Ebay. There's nothing wrong with buying things on Amazon.

You guys were very mature about the amazon pedals - kudos.
I buy these ones and I'm not 12 years old.
I think this helps you long-term because when I decide to refine my sound I will look for something that JHS has developed, refined and perfected. If I don't, I probably wouldn't have bought your pedals in the first place. These are stepping stones.
To give you an idea, I am considering a boss programmable EQ pedal as it's stereo, can have different presets and therefore is far more versatile than a pair of clones or behringers.
For overdrive, it will probably come down to the same things but I want to experience Soul food, OCD, Morning glory on top of my klon clone, screamer and timmy copies.
I can own these, familiarise myself with the sounds and develop my preferences and how I use them.
I would not be able to develop my needs for JHS pedals and be able to say which truly satisfies me without experiencing a broader palette.

Really the only thing a have done for the build is the clear acrylic prototype for the extended pick guard ...loaded with pick ups, pots and switches wired up and all soldered up in the final diagram for ease of finish assembly wiring diagram took a bit of tweaking to get right with the combination of Fender and Gibson wiring schemes plus my little add-on bits to my taste. so the easy stuff is done waiting on the rest of the parts and bits and bobs to arrive and as they say the rest is gonna be real fun. Like figuring out and executing all the remainder to my satisfaction (Hint: it has to look perfect)... sand sand sand till all is nice and smooth as a baby bottom. Then the sanding sealer and sand some more ...all smooth ..then apply fabric. and.. clear coat with multiple layers of resin and sand in between each then its the old buff and buff and buff till super shiny and all the rest of the fun stuff in between... thats why most high end guitars cost so much in the first place despite c-n-c machines and other mechanical devices they use there is a lot more time consuming work that still has to be done by hand and by highly skilled workers for the finished product .in this case a guitar to be proud of. the time it takes and ther skilled labor are the things you are paying for.. not just all the little bits and bobs it's made from...so I'm really saving the other 95% of what it would have cost me from the oem..(Fender) just cost of parts ( $600 including the $75 the guitar cost me from Music-Go-Round) and my own skills and labor..worth whatever i deem it should my work my price... but in the end I will have exactly the guitar I dreamed of in the first place and exactly the way I want it. ...perfect ..to me anyway that's what counts...IT"S MINE you cant have it,,,,,,,,

I think you are missing the point here a bit. Although you are rightly touching on the fact, that playing guitar is becoming more and more universally accessible through these developments, the quality of these cheap knock offs is becoming so good that there is no actual need to buy anything more expensive anymore aside from vanity and male toy collecting. You can buy TS, Rats, Klons, etc for a few dollars, that cannot be distinguished from the originals. The only thing still warranting money are delays and reverbs, and very obscure things. Harley Benton makes guitars for 150 bucks, which when upgraded with another 100 worth of pickups are basically as good as anything. Even the acoustic guitars are quite good. When I was younger, quality of cheaper instruments was really rather bad across the board, this is new and never heard of before development. And I haven't even talked about the Tube15 and Tube30, which are incredible clean high headroom amps, that ask the question, why you'd buy anything over 200 bucks, very loudly. So, yeah. It's never been this easy. It's never been this hard. Boutique pedal makers can count themselves lucky that their core audience are nerds willing to spend on feeling rather than fact.

Its very strange that there''s controversy about demoing guitar pedals.

I think its great that kids today can get an affordable pedal. I'm pushing 60 and my first Delay was the Boss DD-2. I still have it. I had to save up to get that pedal. Even that long ago it wasn't in the same ball park as the Amazon prices. Your 3 series pedals are great and pretty much in my budget. I have several on my board. In fact the 3 series delay is simple, but my favorite. The DD-2 is sentimental so it stays home now. I think Amazon saw the guitar sales booming on line during Covid, and jumped on the bandwagon.

Totally got the Proverbs 31 joke 😉 (I also am blessed with a proverbs 31 wife) and I love the content!

Videos like this makes me aware of how important good YT video content is. And that JHS / Josh, whether I follow their opinion or not, do provide just that. Not choosing sides is an option.

This was really fun! I agree that it’s cool that there’s “gateway pedals” available for kids, or even any SAH players on a tight budget. Fun aside: my first pedal was an Ibanez TS-9, in 1984 it cost me...you guessed it, $40 - and I Have The Box! 😜

There’s such a passive aggressive vibe to this episode.

Like "oh you thought we're being sellouts so we're going to make the most shameless amazon plug fake-sincere video possible just to trigger you"

So wish I could have had those prices in the 70s 80s 90s and present-day... I used to dream about rack systems like the TC 2290 and 1210. I acquired them in the 90s, took me years to purchase. My first thought was, a great way to find out what you like, then invest and upgrade in the future. Nothing wrong with that. You guys really sound great as a band♪♫
