    So similar to our story, thanks for sharing man. I was a professional in health care working just to keep up with my peers and show off the hottest new car I could lease or the biggest home I could afford. No time cycling, stressed to the gills with my wife, we both almost split. After birth of our son and an unexpected chronic illness diagnosis as well as severe career burnout, we switched to new careers and never looked back. Sold the mini mansion, got rid of the lux cars, and started riding again as much as I could. Do I make as much? Nope, but could care less. More freedom and to focus on managing my health.

    Lol was that my comment? That was ages ago. I got over it after finding out you're retired. More power to you.
    Also to be clear, I was thinking this guy is frivolously spending all his money on his bikes when he has a young family and living in a small apartment. It's good to know your kids won't be out on the street bc their dad was terrible with money.

    I mean I know what you're trying to say and appreciate the intended message, but owning two homes, owning a car, wearing Assos kit and having bikes worth $15k is still well out of the reach for most people - certainly for me. Its hardly choosing poverty and happiness over wealth. Its more choosing "lots of wealth" versus "lots and lots of wealth".

    The more you have the more people want to take. You're doing it right. I hate being around the types of people that only talk about what they have. I live in a small condo and I have lots of expensive bike stuff. Sure some other cyclists may get jealous or think badly about what I spend on bike stuff but that's all I have and I'm happy. I drive a minivan also. Always have always will until I don't even own a car anymore which is what I'm trying to achieve.

    Looking from the U.K., if a person has a house but also lives in an apartment half the year, they would be considered to be pretty rich financially.
    My house cost £70,000 and still paying the mortgage, no second home/apartment, and in the U.K. perspective, I’m doing pretty good.
    🤔🤔 interesting to understand perspectives

    This is the goal. Anyone who thinks having a lot of money is a good end goal is, frankly, an idiot. I used to think that way too. What really changed my mindset is when I became hooked on watching documentaries on successful companies/businesses. You'd see how these sometimes ordinary people went from nothing to becoming billionaires, and in a few short decades, are old and withered away. They spent their whole life in the corporate game, and for what? Many of them had really bad family situations, and regardless, their money is not going in the grave with them. They're just old and grey like everyone else. You only get one life to live. Spending it trying to make a ton of money is just a terrible approach IMO. Unfortunately, the materialistic consumerist society that we live in encourages that, and it is almost impossible to escape. The only real way to not feel disappointed in yourself and like you're worth less than a billionaire/celebrity/influencer/whoever else is to just tune out of that trash. Don't follow those types of people on Instagram, youtube, etc. Just live your life and worry about yourself and your own hobbies. Lately, I've even cut out most mainstream music for that reason. Thanks for the video, Jon!

    I got a fairly pricey bike myself. Our home is modest. I figure when or if the peanut butter hits the fan, a descent bike is priceless. It does not use gas, it is easier and cheaper to maintain and it connects me to the environment better than a car ever will. My bike is made of steel, not carbon fiber, because I just like steel. Steel frames if broken can be welded whole again. There are health benefits to using a bike for ordinary errands. Maybe, using a bike also has some benefits for the planet.

    Most cyclists have the cheapest cars ,but the most expensive bikes. I used to love cars, but no one doesn't really care what car you drive expect you. You will gain some ghout /frame for a second . when you go home and realize that you can buy groceries or pay for the rent . It doesn't make any sense. I looked at everyone and everyone does basically the same thing. We get a job , married , have kids , buy car and a House. It like everything is templated and when you do things differently people does watch you like he crazy. I like do things differently and it does make me stand out from the rest . It what makes you happy, you either want to leave a mark on the world or not .
    Sorry for the long rant

  • @jbhorner
    @jbhorner 2 года назад

    I have to say, the comment is really off-putting. It assumes that it’s a financial decision or prioritization. In fact, everyone differs. I know people that don’t think twice about their dwelling. As long as it’s safe and comfortable, they’re good. I know others who have to have the best address, the most pristine home, and most modern decorations. It’s the same with bike equipment. I see bikes on the bike path that look really heavy and old. I see others that cost more than my first car. (Granted, I’m older so my first car wasn’t what they are today in price…even indexed for inflation.) As long as the cyclists are happy enough to ride the bike, it’s the right bike for them. People shouldn’t assume that their standards are the same that others follow; that’s not how life works.

Fancy cars, 1k sheets, expensive Time bike, (that is to much bike for him) but he is always juggling bills and basically broke after his paydays, because is is so overextended, trying to impress people. It makes no sense to me. I sold my car years ago, do everything by bike, got rid of my credit cards and live within a budget, and have a good amount in savings.
