- Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo are back, collaborating as The Neptunes on a more permanent basis and putting in studio time with the likes of Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Nas X. Genius News traced The Neptunes’ era-defining career from grade school band to the studio with artists like Clipse and JAY-Z as well as the formation of N.E.R.D and their impact on current artists like A$AP Rocky and superfan Tyler, The Creator.
The production duo’s latest releases include SZA’s “Hit Different” and Pharrell’s “Entrepreneur” with JAY-Z. In January, the production duo was selected to join the Songwriters Hall of Fame’s 2020 class. They also have two song credits on Megan Thee Stallion’s 'Suga' EP that dropped in March.

by 2003 they had produced 43% of songs played on the radio. absolute geniuses.
I learned that from hip hop evolution, maybe you know that from actually living during that time..
Wild lol 43% there was no escaping them I love them though 💕💕💕💕
@@niceasf7038 nope unfortunately i actually learned that from the same show i was born in 2001 lmao
@@punkbabyaser oh ok😅

I have literally sat down with people and explained how legendary this duo is after they say they only know "Happy" or "Get Lucky." I'm happy this video exist lol. Some of my all time favorite music that heavily shaped the landscape today
It happens the same to me, but I just see it like an opportunity to blow someone else's mind
@@Peeriikooify Oh yeah, same! I don't do it in a condescending way or anything. I honestly just get really excited to share haha
I'm pretty young, so I had no clue about this side of Pharell, let alone this guy chad who if i walked by in public i woulda NEVER in my life know who he was. It's insane, like I never knew about neptunes and all the songs they've written and produced and the artists that they allowed to go big in the industry, my respect for pharrell has extremely sky rocketed after watching this man, once again i'm young, so i didn't grow up seeing who was producing what, but before this vid, 9/10 i would give metro boomin the label of GOAT in terms of producers, but wow, Neptunes are 10000/10 the greatest producers of all time
@@mariobravo1265 That's what's so cool about videos like this! It's a quick and easy way to share info and now you have a whole new world of sounds and songs you can explore and share with others. Being born in the early 2000s I’ve always knew who The Neptunes/NERD/Pharrell were. But it wasn’t until my time in quarantine that I was able to TRULY dive into them. I’ve been watching interviews and documentaries all week so this is perfect timing!😊
You did the right thing.... they are living legends
How do you compare their sound to this era?
Nah deadass tho same 2002 baby 🙋🏽♂️
I was born in 1999 and I’ve been hearing them since I was a child, honestly one of my favorites
@KB Not their ONLY best work. Their first 3 albums were gold. They produced Mariah Carey's song "Say Somethin" which is 1 of my fave beats by them. They definitely were the next generation after Timbaland & Magoo, who also mentored them
The Neptunes are out of this world. The stack of production hits is ridiculous. They should do a VERZUZ against either Timbaland & Missy Elliott or against Trackmasters...true or correct?
Timbaland already did one vs a Swizz. I want a Verzuz of Neptunes vs Kanye

I’m surprised they’re talking about the Neptunes instead of Pharrell. You know everybody will always leave out Chad Hugo in the conversation.
That's kinda by design on their part. Chad Hugo is fairly introverted and likes being behind the scenes
Everybody does not
Let's Get Blown is their most underrated track!
Ooooh I need to add that one and Beautiful to my list of favorites.
Maybe in rap
Yooo i love let's get blown, beautiful and that girl, personal favorites

I knew that hit different was my shit for a reason lol.
facts! that caught me off guard
I just said the same!
It has that classic Pharrell repeat in the beginning!! Just like "milkshake" and numerous others
Correction for the video: The Neptunes actually started working with Justin Timberlake before he went solo. They produced “Girlfriend” for N’Sync.
Also, they are one of the only producers to do almost every genre out. Check out “By Your Side” remix for Sade, “Don’t be Light” Remix for AIR, and “Sympathy for the Devil” Remix for The Rolling Stones. They’ve done a ton of music for international artists too like Australia’s Kylie Minogue and UK’s Ed Sheeran. Their remix of Garbage’s “Androgyny” is legendary too.
They were talking about JT as a solo artist
@@Artistjm Yeah I know they produced Girlfriend featuring Nelly but they just skipped that part for some reason. But Pharrell said countless times that Jay Z introduced him to JT. Also once they made Girlfriend, that’s when Pharrell suggested to JT that he should go solo.
@@user-qd6im2hp2e You’re right. Thank you for pointing that out. I’ll edit my original reply to you.
You know your music man not too many people are up on that Sade remix. Also that Beenie Man song with Mya remix was hot as hell
Chad is the greatest Filipino-American music producer of all time. Also, Happy Filipino-American History Month!
And damn this video makes me feel nostalgic haha. Classic after classic from Chad and Pharrell
If the Neptunes came out today. His Filipino/Asian following wouldve been crazy big. Was ahead of his time

One of my childhood wishes were for The Neptunes to collaborate with OutKast 😢 don’t know if I’ll ever get that in this lifetime....
Outkast's productions was always different from the mainstream, no disrespect to neptunes but dont think they would nt be able to make a song that outkast would really want.. their styles where alot different.
have you heard “Rollinem 7’s “ by N*E*R*D feat. Andre 3000?

@@sami_got_vibes strongly disagree. Neptunes can go street hustlin like on Kendrick lamar or clipse or can go poppy like milkshake or happy or alternative like N.E.R.D. so I'm sure Pharrell and Chad could have created something custom for them too.
People underrate the Neptunes greatness so much, they’re incredibly influential
We used to bang on the lockers doin the "Grindin" beat in high school!!! The Neptunes run was so legendary!!!!

The Neptunes are absolutely brilliant.
I've been a Neptunes/NERD stan ever since I heard the intro on Clones & the entire In Search Of album. They're amazing!
the amount of songs i dont even know the neptunes produced together or individually is prolly endless
My favorite Neptunes produced album was New Sacred Cow by Kenna. I think that was more of Chad's project but that album spoke to me. I grew up in Va Beach from the same generation as those guys, I think in high school I was a freshman when they were seniors. We all went to different high schools but the music was one thing that brought every kid together no matter what hood they were from. Exciting times, exciting times...
The beats they made for Kelis tho! ✨
Grindin beat was legendary. Everybody used make that beat on a lunchtable. Superthug was crazy, also Kelis “Get along wit you”. They were always my favorite producers.

Pharrell and Chad are truly Legends. I think P is the greatest producer ever. At the very least he’s the best of my time. I absolutely adore their sound.
"Late 90s" bro they defined the early 90s sounds too being lowkey hit makers on the New Jack Swing sound
- Damn... y'all went in on the description from "grade school band to the studio with artists like Clipse and Jay-Z..." but the title is from "Tyler, The Creator to Jay-Z". Give the title more of their deserved notoriety length.
Their signature sound was wild. My personal favorite phase of them was the mid 2000s; 05-06 to be exact. Had a darker tone compared to their colorful earlier and present stuff. Like that first Pharrell solo single? Got it like that? I think it’s called; was so crazy!! And all of the hell hath no fury album. Masterpiece!
