Hey everyone. My name is Nicholas and I make videos most about my experiences with minimalism, frugal living, tech, and things of that nature 🌱. So if that sounds good to you consider subscribing and I'll see you in the next one ✏️
1. water filter
2. food prep
3. no spend challenge
4. use cash only
5. have a more strict routine
6. pay bills annually
7. make use of job benefits and perks
After blowing an insane amount of money in 2024 I did a no spend last month. Wasn’t easy but necessary. Good way to build discipline
I’m trying to do this for the entire year but I’ve already failed 😂. I am trying to sell stuff off and compensate
What areas did you allow spending?
@ I ate out a few times that was really it. I didnt buy any material items like clothes or books. I did however add things to my cart that I could use and then on the first of feb I saw what I truly could use or not and deleted somethings and bought somethings.
I promise it gets easier :) coming from someone doing no buy year for the third time in a row. The whole perspective of consumerism changes
Meal prepping saved me so much money in January and it’s also good for my health. Best thing I’ve implemented this year!
I do the same! It helps so much!
One of the biggest chunk of spending I've noticed throughout the years of living day to day as a young adult is your meals. Whenever possible, bring your own lunch and coffee if there aren't free ones at work.
As always, I love your videos. I always hit the like button to remember that I watched it, but I still watch it for the second or third time to refresh my memory.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Nick. Greetings from Montreal. We have a few practices:
1. We don't have credit cards, per se. We have "one" emergency card, that can only be used for computer related items/replacements, then we pay if off monthly.
2. The Three Day Rule. My SSDI comes at the top of the month, and salaries come on specific days (work from home).
A. Everything that is not necessary for life (i.e. discretionary spending) must be carted by the 1st of the month. We have three days to either purchase or not.
If we find the purchase to be unnecessary, that item stays in the cart, until such time that it becomes necessary or not. If all purchases carted are not finalized in the first
three days of the month, that list get pushed back to the next month.
B. We grocery shop as necessary. I shop most items, my partner shops meat/veggies/ etc. We live out of our pantry. We never call in, unless we can't be bothered to cook.
(i.e. the last time I brought home Burger King for two for lunch it cost me $40.00 CAD) Don't get me started on how much KFC or Dominos is for dinner ...
I only buy enough groceries my Granny cart will carry (Winter makes this all the more Difficult) Because Snow and Granny Carts are not a match made in heaven.
And I am loathe to hail a taxi to travel 3 blocks home from the mall. There is a taxi stand outside the mall.
3. If We Don't need it, We Don't Buy It ... plain and simple.
4. We use Netflix, YT Premium for me, and Apple Music (we never apply for any other program unless it is necessary). My partner shuffles between streaming services for TV.
I don't watch tv, or long form programming. Unless it is on YT. And we don't subscribe to any Android Extras that are not necessary.
5. My partner pays all the bills electronically, and I pay the Rent. Most home items are purchased through Amazon, if it isn't cheaper in a shop.
6. We don't carry cash, because we live in a cashless society in Canada.
7. Before we spend money we must ask if it is necessary to spend that (money) at that specific moment ???
8. We live in two rooms, and only have 2 closets. And a very Spartan kitchen. So We have learned to live as Minimalists for over 20 years now.
Because unless we need to save it, we don't. Our outside balcony is our "Bin" storage area. There is no rentable storage in our building for that matter.
9. We do the Minimalist PURGE every six months, or at the turn of a season, when we (cart) the Winter gear, and hang the other clothing.
10. We have the 1 year rule for clothing. If it has not seen the light of day or have been worn inside a calendar year, we either donate them or trash them.
I cannot be bothered to sell online, because people have proven that they are cheap and will nickel and dime you until you lose on the sale !!
That's some serious dedication, I'm impressed.
This is a really good list. We do the opposite on one though. We try to use cash all the time. We find that when we use cash, we feel more of the "Pain" of the transaction.
@@glennmorris6071 I find, here in Montreal, where I shop, if you pulled out cash, cashiers look at you funny !! Cash is a hit or miss option in my neighborhood.
Also, most shops I use have self check out, which is very unfriendly towards cash, and most of them won't collect cash.
These are really good thank you
@@glennmorris6071 The reason we don't use cash, is because people usually look at you askance. And most shops have self service check out, and many do not accept cash, unless you go to a physical cashier. But for the most part, in Montreal, the debit card is the main payment method unless you are using a credit card.
Exploring Nixorus feels like finding a secret door to knowledge that most people don’t even know exists. It’s been a huge part of my personal transformation.
The no spend challenge is so empowering. I have only done it for short period and encourage it for my community as well.
I’m feeling proud seeing you in this place. I was an old subscriber since 2021, wish you all best brother!🤝🏻
Appreciate you sticking around!!
Would you ever do a video on your weekly food shop and meals? could be helpful to know how much you spend on food and meal prep ideas 💞 love the video and your content!!
That’s a good idea!
Great idea!
For me it’s reversed on the cash: I don’t spend and cash as much as possible since I am European and we only use ONE debit card. That debit card offers end of month calculations on EACH purchase and you can see your spending habits there. I only have miscalculated sums for things like restaurants where I pay for all the group and after that they transfer me their part, but other than that I can say that I know exactly how much I spend and on what.
Meal prepping helps my wife and I save a ton of money for sure - we also share a vehicle opting to enjoy time together and syncing our work schedules. It works well for us and we save a ton of money this way. Another great video Nicholas - appreciate you as always!
An expense tracker helps me the most so I can see what I can cut back on. An item needs to be on my mind for a length of time and it needs to check off some requirements. Sometimes I look for quality more often than cost. I would buy expensive water than cheap soda any day. I rarely go out to eat, for I don’t have a reason to when I get groceries.
That’s a great point about quality over cost.
I’m trying to stick to doing weekly meal planner and one weekly shopping and works well 😊
Sounds great!
Simple but not easy. Well done!
@@jillmcaleese6514 but saves so much time :)
I feel like I have times when I spend a lot a few times a year, then nothing for a long time, it works for me! I like to have a balance, so I'm not restricting some fun times.
Love your videos, so High quality and Clean.
Thanks so much
I've experienced..... No spin.... 4 years now. When making a purchase I save all my receipts and log them in my journal monthly. At the end of the year I see what I buy on a regular basis annually, divided by 12 and I have my yearly budget. This helps me keep and maintain a one year emergency fund. When the new year comes around I take the money I saved two years ago and buy mutual stocks from the s&p 💲💲💲💲💲
I love the idea of tracking receipts and making a budget out of it
Your videography is very well done. Great job! Thanks for the hard-work you put into these.
More kitty footage!! xD
Been meaning to say, an advice you talked about a few videos back ended up saving me quite a bit.
My hayfever comes and goes as it pleases, thanks to A/C units where I work, so cost of tissues was a category of it's own in my budget sheet, but then you've talked about cloth tissues, and I recalled having those back when I was a child. Thinking paper tissues only became a thing because of a trend, I went back to cloth tissues and never looked back.
Hats off, sir!
Hello, I love your videos. I’m so happy on Sunday when you post videos..
Thank you Sara!! I appreciate that
Happy New Year Nicholas! Hope 2025 is good to you and I look forward to another year of watching your videos!🎉
Thank you Haylea!! Happy New Year and aways appreciate your comments
I like pickling veggies too. It has probiotic properties when we do this.
My bank releases a whole year spend spread sheet that breaks down each group and lets you see what I spent in each group. I’m sure most banks have this so just check your statements
Love Nick! Always helpful advice delivered in a calm manner. Also, very easy on the eyes. ;-)
LOL. Eva suit. Get into the Minimist Robot Nicholas!
Thank you once again for your excellent content 😊
Appreciate that, glad you like it!
EVA Suit! Any word back for the Weir Interview? Also a Wes Anderson Interview would be awesome, right? Hello Kitty with cute little toe beans!! Thanks Nicholas, always good to hear the notification bell.
Never heard back! Wes Anderson would be great but in my dreams!! Appreciate it Amy!
It took me a few months to start the “no spend” challenge, mostly because it seemed overwhelming . What I quickly learned is I need to figure out what works for me, not doing a copy/paste of how others are doing it. Exactly what Nicholas said, trying it in short periods is super helpful, as well as breaking it down. When I started tracking daily, weekly, and monthly expenses, then broke those down into categories, it made it much easier to see where the essentials and nonessentials are.
I haven’t done it long enough to see what it looks like for an entire year, but I've started going back into previous years to see which months I'm spending more, and why. It’s giving me some level of predictability and making it easier to budget for certain times of the year.
Great video, and cute dilute calico!!! (๑⚆‿⚆)
Your cat is so cuteeeee 🤍
I always take an insulated water for myself and kids whenever I go anywhere, saves like $4-8 every time.
No buy this year is what I’m doing. So far, I’m succeeding!
Great tips 🎉 I’m on an extreme no buy year. Consumerism brainwashed us so much. On my small channel I also talk about these important topics
That it has. And I'll check out your vids 👍
Love the videos on Finance dude!
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying them
I’m down to Sirius xm and kindle unlimited subscriptions. I hardly get coffee out as we have a keurig in the office. I did start my Factor account back up cuz let’s face it, I can’t cook to save my life. At least with the food subscription I’m only buying exactly what I’m eating and there’s no waste. I agree, routines definitely help.
The talking on the banana phone made me laugh!!!!!! But such an informative video as always. Really like that your videos are not over stimulating and easy to watch and follow along with what you say. Thanks for another great vid!!
Glad you liked the video and my phone, appreciate the kind words!
I like your hair that way they look better than the long. Cheers!
Some job benefits come with a few hours of free legal services. Enough time to make a will.
Hello, I cook at home, my total number of clothes is around 98 and I buy one or two clothes a year. I do the house cleaning myself. I don't go to the hairdresser, I do it myself, I walk everywhere, I sold my car... All this is very good, but I have a question for you, where should we spend the money we have increased by spending less? What should motivate us to spend less? I would like to travel the world myself, but life has become too expensive.
I like the no expending for a week or couple of days. I try not to hang out at coffee places as I have to support them and be a decent patron that uses their WiFi, seat, etc. but there are times that staying home is a dangerous slope…meaning you became a hermit/depressing way to stagnant your social awareness. :(..so yes you have to balance your course.
I just moved from Colombia to Canada, and not spending money unnecessarily has been very tough. However, starting today, since February has officially begun, I want to explore the idea of not buying anything at all.
Banana phone is a great way to save money
Gonna make it a running joke now
The concept of different credit cards weirds me out everytime I hear it. As well as actually using all of them. Its something very very very unusual if you are from germany (or probably europe in general, but please correct me if I'm wrong on that one).
I have 1 Debitcard that I use for almost everything and 1 emergency credit card if stores decline my debit card, which might happen when you are traveling. But thats possibly the only moment where I use my credit instead of my debit card.
And you are 100% right about the concept of a proper routine to save money. I usually food-prep, but when I don't I go to the grocery store during lunchtime and buy something else which usually is a) not as healthy b) not as satiating and c) not as cheap.
Get into food-prepping guys.
I think more people (even in the US) are trying to get away from credit cards as well. They're fine if you can be responsible, but also can be a trap
Hey, tahnks for the video, I think some timestamps would be great to include!
2025 is the year I save money.
Same
💙💙💙
still relatively new to frugal living but one thing that i practice to minimize my overconsumption is by fasting. the first month might be difficult but you'll get through it. as a muslim myself, being able to fast frequently is really a life-changing experiences, religiously and monetarily.
soooo when do you reward yourself with a new plant? you definitely need a jade 😅❤
My job benefit: "we pay you"
No-spend challenges are easy… until you realize how much you ‘accidentally’ spend on coffee. ☕😂 Anyone else struggle with this?
How can u build your credit score if you only use cash? For an international student like me, I think your government has created a subconscious mind favoring consumerism and capitalism. Your loan, your interest rate, buying house, buying card, renting , etc they all require checking your credit score
My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. Thanks to larysa Caba, my portolio is doing really great and im proud of the decisions i made last year.
Making over 48k monthly is all because of her.
I feel one Of the greatest challenges that we first timers face in the ma rket is that we end up losing all we have, making it difficult to find ourselves back to our feet. My biggest advice is to always seek the services of a professional just like I did when I ventured into it for the first time. Big thanks to Larysa Caba. I now make huge profits by weekly through her services while still learning to stand on my own.
I know Larysa Caba. she trades for everyone I meet. I met her twice at a meeting in Germany and after her lectures from Ella I had to personally ask her to be my financial advisor. she is definitely good.
I have never seen a trader as open and transparent as Larysa Caba with her clients. The way she decides to make a profit for her clients. she allows you to express your fears and she still rests your fears and that is my respect. I don't normally comment on videos, but this word should be included. she is really cool.
I just looked up her name online. she is licensed with credible certificates and has an amazing track record. Thank you for the message.
10/10 toe beans 8:02
Meal prepping isn't a time suck, do it while doing the section of days when you're consuming. Watch that tv show, listen\watch a podcast or youtube post. etc.
Please water that plant
Hey Nick,
talking about cutting spends on not necessary items and then advertising immediately for Epidemic Sound. How goes that together? ;-)
First thing I cut spendings on are companies doing commercials. Their ads steal my time and if I don't needed them in the past - I won't need them in the future. If it doesn't come naturally, discard it...
Peace
Hello, I want to order a mobile for breakfast😅,😂
wow common sense...
If you wanna Safe Money you should not pay for yt premium. Wtf
