Whenever I remove buying as a cushion, the discomfort of the world feels a bit sharper. The inconsistencies/ my mood shifts definitely reveal how much of a coping mechanism it is for me. Sitting with those feelings is so hard, and I appreciate you being honest about it. Wherever your career takes you, I hope you’ll still share a bit! :)

Really appreciate the update Immy. I’m finding the whole low buy project very interesting too. Realising what I really need as opposed to what I want. Enjoying the process so far.

Really draws into focus the connection between overconsumption and a more numb/oblivious/complacent populace.

Shopping therapy whether at regular shops, online or in thrift shops is a direct way to put yourself in financial jeopardy - a lesson learnt the hard way. Glad you’re able to sit with those feelings and see them clearly. Maybe visiting with friends or volunteering might help you find less destructive use of your spare time.

This perfectly puts into words how I feel about shopping and not shopping! It numbs the discomfort. I’m not a big shopper, but my impulse purcahses tend to happen when I’m feeling anxious.

I like to have a running total of money I didn’t spend. If I’m getting groceries or at a store and I look at something and decide not to purchase it, I put it in my notes app. At the end of the month I look at it and see what I did not buy and it really helps with the mentality of saving and how it isn’t just about what you’ve spent but also what you haven’t. Thanks for the Excel refresher course🥰🥰🥰

I love that you've inspired people to use Libby. I'd also recommend for people to actually check out what other resources their local library might have. Mine partners with a tool library which allows you to check out actual craft or home project tools for free. Also we have a whole corner of the library devoted to a MakerSpace which has open-lab time for people to come in and work on whatever project with the libraries craft tools(sewing machine, yarn winder, cricket machine etc.) That way you can try your hand at so many different craft hobbies, meet people and not spend any money.

This is such a good idea; I think I have kind of slipped into a low-buy season because I hate the amount of clutter I have, especially all the food and spices I have accumulated over the last year. I was really inspired by your last video to make pantry meals like dahl and curry. I will definitely try and journal about my overspending. Also, I would love to hear more about your thought around your career path and being a creator.

Hi Immy, I'm a long time watcher of your channel but haven't really commented in the past! I just wanted to say I really appreciate your honesty and authenticity, both when it comes to sharing your spending records or your feelings (especially when you're not feeling positive about the challenge). I'm also doing a no-buy year (although with different rules to you) so it's been very inspiring following your journey!
(Also to me you are that cosy content creator that I put on the background when I'm at home and needing another voice in the house, your videos are always so soothing and calming!)

Thank you! I found your channel only a few days ago...I'm self employed and dont earn very much money, interested in minimalism but surrounded by chaos, pescatarian (was vegan for a decade), love cooking, have a vegetable garden, love lists...and so your channel is very aligned with my values and you have completely inspired me!! Will be starting to budget, aim for low ish buy year, encourage my husband to watch your bread making videos (he's much more of a baker than I am). I would love to knit but find anything other than scarves or squares completely overwhelming!Thank you very much for your content- you have a very soothing manner and have totally motivated me.

I’d be interested to see your exact numbers of how much you’ve saved and how much you’ve put into each of your buckets (and why you chose that amount). I also would love to hear more about how you resist buying things. I’m feeling similar to you for January and February (these months are easier to avoid buying things), but I’m worried come March… 😬

Great video! Despite (or maybe because of) already being pretty good with my money, I was surprised to see how much my priorities have been shifting in only three weeks of doing this challenge. You mentioning how expensive a lot of things can be in the US is insightful because it makes a lot of things make a bit more sense to me now seeing some of those figures (like hearing Americans say certain UK/European salaries are not enough to live on when I think lots of people in the UK could (and do) live very comfortably on those same “impossible” salaries *even* with the currency conversion taken into account). I really enjoyed Housel’s *The Psychology of Money* that you referenced, and that same point you made about them choosing to pay off their house faster vs. investing also made an impression on me in terms of making me feel more confident to chart my own financial path that enforces my values and priorities instead of feeling pressure to go with the convention wisdom of others’ with no regards to how I’d prefer to live. The self-employment vs employment dilemma is understandable. I hope you come to something that works for you. And, of course, you can always change your mind if something works now but not later and vice versa. It’s probably the creative in me, but I *love* the interactive pie chart you added to jazz up your spreadsheet. And, on a totally unrelated note, I adore your jumper.)

I am loving this video series so much, it is perfectly timed for the sabbatical that I am on (because I'm on a restricted budget as well)! I have to agree that the cold weather is definitely helpful for keeping me at home and spending less too 😂. But I am looking forward to finding free/low cost things to do as the weather warms up, like going to (free) museums, spending more time outdoors, picnics at the park instead of eating out, etc! And I too am considering a career change once my sabbatical is over, so I'm glad to have the space to figure out what is next. Good luck with whatever you decide, but I (selfishly) hope you are able to keep creating content as a hobby, even if you stop doing it as a job (or maybe it can just be a side gig to bring in extra money for your savings goals?)

I loved this! Quick storytime, late last year I kept looking at these pretty budget spreadsheets and trying to convince myself to get a new one that had a goals sheet even though I already had a perfectly serviceable spreadsheet... So I decided to make one myself instead, which cost me $0 and I got to use pretty colours and feel accomplished for doing it. Buut actually that pie chart design looks great and your tutorial was dead useful! Gonna change some things about mine now. Thank you so much, Immy❤ I'm also doing low buy this year, so I get truly excited when I see you've uploaded

Loved this video, Immy! I was especially interested to hear about your thoughts about content creation. I've long thought it must be really hard to reconcile that with a low-buy / less consumerism attitude... and at the same time, I'm so glad I get to watch and listen to creators like yourself who talk about these subjects and produce such great content -- and thus deserve to get paid. It's a conundrum for sure. I'm glad to hear AdSense is coming along. Hello. Enjoyed finding your channel recently and catching up with your journey. My daughter is vegetarian and enjoys tofu but I don’t like to buy pre-made tofu that is easily available in shops in the same way I try to avoid lots of other highly processed food. I was therefore thrilled to see your instructions for making it at home and have just ordered some soya beans to give it a go. So, thank you for that. In a shameless bit of self advertising, I have a RUclips channel where I chat about my making, including knitting. Videos last between 30 and 60 minutes, so not too long, but good for knitting along to. Best wishes, Laura.

Oh I love a chart! Thank you for being honest about your relationship with content creation -- I've wondered how creators who have been doing it a long time feel about continuing to do it, when is the right time to take a step back, etc. I'm also here for more knitting content; I want to knit more than I do and need to prioritize it. I should also pause my subscriptions: it's terrible, but for whatever reason I feel I need them?? So I have options??? I think I need to get back into cycling through them. Great video!

I can relate to feeling like a shut-in! We are a one car family and live 3 miles from town. I really only run errands once a week...stacking errands. Only shopping for groceries and not thrifting for more clutter is so liberating. I seem to have so much more time. I definitely have alot of fabric and yarn to work through and getting alot of gardening done. But I've come to realize I need more social contact, it feels like the beginning of Covid when we were in our own little bubbles. Not really good for my mental health. RUclips is becoming my social life.

I'm doing a no buy/low buy year too, and so far it hasn't been as issue at all, which feels great! When I feel like I need something, I think of what I can use as an alternative, and who I know that might have the thing I need and will lend it to me. I also feel like I've saved so much time by not going out shopping or dreaming about things I want to buy. But, most importantly, I am already a lot less stressed about finances, because I know that the money I have left in my account before my next paycheck is really going to very few and selected things. I know what I need to spend money on, and what I WILL spend money on, and I know from my historical financial data that I have more than I need.

I've paused at the bit where you said you like to have English long videos on in the background while you knit. I love to have English long videos on while I cut and stick bits of paper. One of my favourite RUclipsrs, for her accent and chatter, is Camelia Craft Designs. She makes me laugh out loud and it does feel like she is keeping me company now that my teenage children are mostly out or up in their rooms and my husband goes to bed much earlier than I do. I am also doing a low buy (thanks for the encouragement) but have found a few things have bothered me. Please talk more about specific struggles and how you worked through them! Here are mine. We went to a school sporting event because I had to work at the concession stand, which meant I had to take my kids with me and they wanted to buy food there. I ended up giving them each $2.50 to use how they would like. Silly small amount, but it bothered me as it wasn't really necessary. I also ran out of the vitamin c that I take and ordered more but decided to try a new vitamin which allowed me to get free shipping. Another silly purchase. Obviously not a big deal in either case, but i really enjoy hearing others stories and how they've worked through specific challenges. Thanks!

I am trying to be more sustainable and frugal, it's hard as a mom of 2 young kids. As a lifelong knitter a great source of yarn is the thrift store, when seniors pass on often their stashes are just donated. I personally am okay with using wool, and it's much warmer and I am canadian and this week it was -40 C, and I have gotten enough wool to make 2 sweaters for under $10. It keeps it from going to a landfill, which makes it more ethical to me. There is a company in Vancouver, Fabcycle, that sells only reduced textiles and they have excellent quality and prices.

I want to start a low-buy year but I also want to enjoy my money. Instead I'm doing low buy on things I don't genuinely care about like takeout/delivery and instead diverting that money to things I really really want like getting myself a tablet, possibly a stationary bike, and activities for my boyfriend and I. Not really low-buy but it is a more mindful and joyful way of spending money. Trying to avoid buying things that catch my eye in the moment and instead buy things I have been wanting for a long time

Ooh, thanks for showing how you make your spreadsheet! I know just basic spreadsheet stuff, and this helped to see how you do it. Also, I'm very impressed with your discipline and your organization around all the no-buy and your finances. It really seems like you're setting yourself up for success and reaching your goals. It's inspiring!

On food: we were talking to our financial counselor and she gave the advice that food would vary based on lifestyle and what our goals are. Since I'm gluten free and dairy free then the alternatives will cost a lot of money and also be smaller portions. So you end up spending more money. I try to remind myself of this when I'm eating because our food bill is quite high.

Regarding RUclips recommendations, have you discovered Knitting Podcasts? They're not really podcasts, but it's just the term that's stuck. People talk about what they've finished and what they're working on. I find it really inspiring and just fun. A lot of people do share their acquisitions (which I'm not so keen on) but they're typically at the end meaning you can just skip that part if you don't want to be tempted. I've got a knitting podcast where I've decided not to share my acquisitions and I do them in english and in german 🥰 There's a lot of amazing content creators in the knitting/crochet/sewing/fibre arts and lots of videos to keep you busy!
Love your videos and wishing you all the best for your low buy year!

@ fully agree, I think everyone needs to know their current state of mind and what content is currently going to work for them. There are lots of different videos out there and I know that for me not all of them will give me that urge. It’s another chance to learn about ourselves and our spending habits!

Similarly to your experience with the knitting, I did something similar for the food in my pantry. I’ve been so used to buying stuff before I need it, but I lost sight of everything I had in stock.
The creativity required to make meals about everything I have in my pantry has really motivated me! All sorts of random ingredients.

It's good to hear that someone from the UK also sees the value of paying off their student loans. The general consensus at least among the people I know is to make minimum payments until it's written off, but having moved to Germany and needing to pay a lot more, it absolutely makes sense to pay it off if you can as the interest rate went up quite significantly in 2023.

You're wearing that sweater I love! I just sent a screenshot to my mom so she can make on for me in those colors! Love the low-buy. I am trying to reduce my spending so I can focus on paying down my credit cards, but I have already spent a bunch of money on yet another course! I think I have an addiction to courses, but if they help me in the long run, I'm okay with investing in myself right now. Other than that, I am doing pretty good with my spending so far.

I've been inspired by your initial video about a low buy year! Indefinitely need it. Last month I spent 2k (including bills) and it's ridiculous. I don't know where that money goes and it's terrible because I have goals that require me to save (i.e. buy a home, travel) and it won't be possible if I don't prioritise my needs and wants. I'm 25 and it's starting to worry me. I have a bit saved but genuinely it can feel so overwhelming!

I got a planner for Christmas. I too am doing something like this. My low buy is nothing new except sheets. I got a california king. So I spaced out 2 sets of flannel sheets. I also don't want to buy from Amazon. I have broke that once I got a better deal on fleece lined leggings. Over all I felt pretty good move forward with this month. I have more no spend days then spend.
