Fellow marching band member here. Besides some DCI shows. This was one of the loudest bands i have ever heard of and it was so goooooooooooood. No wonder they say "Everything is bigger in Texas". Were going to Indianapolis again. I cant wait to hopefully hear this band again.
And without using microphones on the whole band like so many do. Just pure playing skill. Mike Howard, the director at the time, was asked how they did it. He simply would say you just have to get everyone playing. 😁

I was a volunteer for music warmups for all prelims semis and finals, I'm from PA and I knew coming into this competition Vandegrift was amazing, I was lucky enough to be able to watch this show from the box, from the auxiliary warm up room ( friend had to trade me so I could watch because they didn't use the main music warm up room for winds ), and for their victory run I watched from the field. It was nice to be able to step back from preforming and just being able to watch everything great around you. It was an amazing year for BOA and super competitive. Definitely an experience I'm going to remember.
I have never heard of that band. This show brought tears to my eyes. This is a true power show. I must say that they have a FANTASTIC brass and very tight percussion. The only things negatively that stood out to me were the simplicity of the drill, with a bit of stand and play, and then becoming fatigued just before the final push. GREAT, GREAT JOB VANDEGRIFT!!!!!

My excuse is that my marching band is 150 people and they have like 300. I use this excuse to validate being stuck at #10-20 in grand nats for the past decade
@Ivan Ontiveros yeah I suppose I’m pretty thankless about our current standings considering our past. We have won grand nationals 3 times and won states 27 times, so seeing us only get #20 in grand nationals is disappointing
Meanwhile our Dad band is still working out Smoke On The Water! 😂😂. Allof these bands in these competitions are just fabulous. Period. This was a very special performance for sure and blessed to have witnessed it and all of the others.
Would’ve loved to see a full color guard in the show with flags and rifles it would’ve added so much in my opinion but I love the show it is amazing I loved seeing their encore at nationals

Nice clean drill. Well designed and marched. Not very challenging though (please don't kill me), from a /visual standpoint/, thought musically they were pretty damn tight. I was kinda shocked to read further down in the comments that they won? I just expected something a bit more ambitious to be the winner. Though, I suppose putting Mozart on the field is ambitious enough, considering.
And they won the TMEA State Honor Band that year! Actually, they march every kid they can so everyone can be involved. It’s a HUGE undertaking to put that many musicians on the field. The drill never stopped, they did body movements non stop. DCI only marches 120, this program has almost 400 that want to be on the field. I’m so proud that our directors make every effort to do so instead of just the top few. And, I’m completely proud of my son, the trombone soloist! 😍
Would've loved to see both of them at GN, since I loved both of their shows. Unfortunately, BA doesn't seem to go to GN every year anymore, and Reagan performed at the Macy's Parade.
Cause Way May have but they weren’t there and they swept the floor with their competition. People can’t even hate on this show because this would’ve placed above some previous champions in earlier years as well. Obviously different year different show but you can’t take this away from them especially after sounding as great as they did. Beautiful show, clean, powerful, and it damn well put them on the map

Results would be all over the place, but they aren’t there so we can’t make those assumptions
Lol the only impression of Kyoto Tachibana you guys get is from Pasadena parades. You seriously think they could beat bands like Vandegrift,Avon,Carmel, Hebron or Broken Arrow? Kyoto Tachibana is lucky they don't know who these guys are cause it seems like 90% of people think they're better but they've never done anything against a BOA champion band. They aren't better. This isn't against Tachibana's hard work but they it's true.
They would score huge in execution (both musical and visual) but would struggle to rack up the necessary GE points due to the lack of difficulty and artistic complexity of their music selections. It would be like trying to win the state marching contest while playing Louie Louie and National Emblem March....like you could be the Chicago Symphony and you're still going to hit a wall just based on your literature choice. They'd also run into some size issues that a lot of other bands with only 120-130 kids run into. It's hard to compare a band of that style to the bands of BOA. Now if we're talking about some of the JMBA scholastic groups, like Shonandai HS, Saitama Sakae HS, Tenrikyo Academy (天理教校学園), Nishihara, etc.....Those shows have more of a WGI-Lite flair to them. I think those groups are stronger overall than Vandegrift, Hebron, Broken Arrow, Avon....groups like that.
It's a public school. All kids can play in the band. I believe they move less strong players (those who struggle playing and marching at the same time) into props management roles, etc. The school is only 10 years old and grown so much that I expect they will eventually have to split into two bands (JV vs Varsity).

This band could compete with some college/university marching bands.. Which for a high school band is ridiculous good.. But a top tier drum corps during late July onward pushing into finals week is when the sound comparison just isn't close.. Its like saying lsu or Clemson could beat the raiders or browns.. Its just not happening.. I feel sorry for any band thats gotta follow this group at a football game halftime show.. thats gotta be terrible if your in the other band 😂

Not only did they win this but they also received the internationally recognized Sudler Shield Award
