I was in the Vandegrift Band from 2011-2013 and looking back I took for granted how exceptional of an organization it was. My free-time-hungry teenage self wanted something else but the discipline and commitment is incredible. And trashy enough to actually win BOA. Who cares what grip they use? They're about double the size yet twice as clean as the majority of high school snare lines.
Sound quality player to player is incredibly consistent. Phrasing is also very clear. Exhibit A why matched grip for snares is ideal. Traditional grip provides a variety of visual options not real afforded to match grip, but close your eyes and listen to the line. The snares sound incredible for a bunch of high school kids.

Level 100 Magikarp yeah, it’s got plenty of benefits in terms of logistics and some instructional benefits, but the argument you put forward neglects the immensely valuable learning experience it can be for students to learn multiple grips as a part of their education. I’ll say it as I did for one of my papers: if you intend to offer an educational experience that is concerned with performance, history, AND preparation for the students to do later musical ensembles (and to just have a great bag of skills) teaching traditional grip to your snareline is a no brainer. That kind of developmental opportunity has been squandered by lots of programs that simply would say “figure it out” and of course the kids wouldn’t learn anything. This is not education. There were also many programs that, due to various difficult circumstances, can not afford a snare-specific tech, or more than one perc tech in general, and to add teaching an entirely new grip to a select member of students simply isn’t practical or economical when there’s bigger fish to fry. But if you can, you absolutely should in my opinion. Their battery guy, Joe Hobbs, knows what he is doing, so I’m sure between him and the rest of the music staff they made the best decision for their kids. Honestly at that big of a battery I can see how teaching and cleaning traditional, while valuable, would be a huge undertaking.

We definitely had our fair share of 100+ degree weather back in Texas this season! But you're right! We were thankful for the indoor facilities for grand nationals! Especially since it was cold enough for snow, something we are definitely not used to, haha.
Once, during a competition, this one band was so large that when they all did “Hut,” it shook the whole stadium and everyone got a fright. That was an interesting experience.
I understand that people think traditional grip is better, but most don't understand that when playing traditional, it needs to be played THE RIGHT WAY. A lot of drumlines play flat handed. That's one of the reasons my Drumlines always play matched. It's easier to play and clean matched than traditional. Teaching the basic fundamentals while learning to play traditional is a lot of work and everyone doesn't gravitate to it like others. Not saying that's why Vandegrift doesn't do it, but matched grip is better when building a Drumline and also when cleaning music.
match grip is how you should play drums why do you think quints don't play traditional, because it's restricting and was used only for sling drums. "tradition" doesn't translate to skill
Level 100 Magikarp imo, it’s easier to keep a single stroke roll consistent and fast with matched. So in some areas the grip can pertain to skill (maybe)
@@unfeadunicorn I know matched grip is "better" to play and yeah traditional is called traditional for a reason. I still just think it looks way better. I know matched is better but it's just ugly to me.

Guard girls are quaking
We had to practice outside in 110° heat when I was in high school. Man, these kids are blessed. No wonder they’re so focused, they’re not about to catch heat stroke
We definitely had our fair share of 100+ degree weather back in Texas this season! But you're right! We were thankful for the indoor facilities for grand nationals! Especially since it was cold enough for snow, something we are definitely not used to, haha.
The indoor facility is only used at grand nationals
So this is the show that whipped my bands asses a few years ago.
Great job at BOA loved your show
U go drum line … send me to flash backs of my day on the tenors
this is the largest and cleanest high school battery i’ve ever seen. like who marches toms? VANDEGRIFT THATS WHO.
Can u tell every song in this performance ? Such a beautiful performance
Who is the drum instructor and the writer ? Go job to them and the students.
Joe Hobbs is the percussion Instructor and Andrew markworth writes our book
Why is drum line pulsing
Tide Clorox Probably to give time to the drum major when they are holding.
Performance!
Tide Clorox because... they can and it works for them
Head snares @?
eleni demoleas i need it too bro
A band’s placement is proportional to the amount of snares they have
Not true. My school won Grand Nationals a while back with 6 snares
absolutely amazing.
Nice!! Really interesting to see match grip on snares, my school does that too
That is a really tough book. Great job, everyone! And..nice writing.
I personally am not the biggest fan of matches, but those snares KILLED IT
dude they're good but I just haaaate the matched grip 😂😂
Traditional grip was invented for the side drums, so besides looking ugly, its healthier to play matched in this case
Gavin Griffith Facts, matched looks terrible
match grip is how you should play drums why do you think quints don't play traditional, because it's restricting and was used only for sling drums.
I better see that tenor cam
the basses sound so good wtfff
The coordination tho. This is grt if yall dont win then idk wat could beat it. Big ups to ur band director.
