    I was in the Vandegrift Band from 2011-2013 and looking back I took for granted how exceptional of an organization it was. My free-time-hungry teenage self wanted something else but the discipline and commitment is incredible. Throughout, this isn’t just one of the best marching ensembles in the country but one of the best organizations, period. The culture was such a balance of perfectionism and meritocracy with inclusiveness and camaraderie when pretty much every other organization I’ve been a part of has had one, the other, or neither.

      Sound quality player to player is incredibly consistent. Phrasing is also very clear. Exhibit A why matched grip for snares is ideal. Traditional grip provides a variety of visual options not real afforded to match grip, but close your eyes and listen to the line. The snares sound incredible for a bunch of high school kids.

    Saw their finals performance. Definitely deserving of 1st place it was just DCI at that point seriously
    p.s. not seriously. If you have a brain you know that BOA and DCI are separate fields of competition. I was a student at Carmel HS the year before this season and I still think this show took the cake compared to both of the shows I was a part of. It humbled me and showed me that we are all capable of truly amazing things and without this activity my life would be so bland. Remember to show love to everyone who is a part of this activity. When you get older and you can’t be a part of it anymore you’ll realize what a great thing it is that we have.

    • @tstew258
      @tstew258 4 года назад +1

      Level 100 Magikarp yeah, it’s got plenty of benefits in terms of logistics and some instructional benefits, but the argument you put forward neglects the immensely valuable learning experience it can be for students to learn multiple grips as a part of their education. I’ll say it as I did for one of my papers: if you intend to offer an educational experience that is concerned with performance, history, AND preparation for the students to do later musical ensembles (and to just have a great bag of skills) teaching traditional grip to your snareline is a no brainer. That kind of developmental opportunity has been squandered by lots of programs that simply would say “figure it out” and of course the kids wouldn’t learn anything. This is not education. There were also many programs that, due to various difficult circumstances, can not afford a snare-specific tech, or more than one perc tech in general, and to add teaching an entirely new grip to a select member of students simply isn’t practical or economical when there’s bigger fish to fry. But if you can, you absolutely should in my opinion. Their battery guy, Joe Hobbs, knows what he is doing, so I’m sure between him and the rest of the music staff they made the best decision for their kids. Honestly at that big of a battery I can see how teaching and cleaning traditional, while valuable, would be a huge undertaking.

You were fabulous. Thanks for posting the video that hones in on the drumline. After trumpets, I cheer the loudest for the drumline. You did an excellent job being the "spine" that creates a structure for the rest of the musicians. Also noted: you had to ride the bus for several hours to get to Indy. So much hard, physical and mental work for months to get to this point of performance. God bless musicians, especially those who can play and march complex patterns at the same time. High Fives to you all (and your directors, pit crew, chaperones, drivers, boosters, school administrators, community donors, etc.)

    I guess the only cool thing you can't do visually with matched grip is the "hi mom" visual.
    Santa Clara won three drum titles under Fred Sanford playing matched grip back in the late 70's if my memory serves me correctly, so D.C.I. has experienced matched grip lines. Also, 27th Lancers were on fire playing matched grip. We played matched grip during one part of "Devil Went Down to Georgia" at Spirit in 1980. There are so many advantages to playing matched grip. There was an old article published by Ludwig back when I was in high school about the different muscle groups used by each grip. Interesting read. Results speak for themselves in my opinion. Whatever grip.....do it well. Keep on drumming!

    There is something symmetrically appealing to a matched grip line that is
    properly taught like this one. Stick angles, heights, mechanics, etc..
    And the transference to all of the other percussion instruments must
    be something that has gone into the thought process of playing matched,
    not to mention the recruiting of a snare line each year. I mean, if a few guys
    graduate - you have tenors and basses and others in the line to draw from
    to replace them. Otherwise in a traditional grip line you are constantly
    having to train the left hands of young percussionists and to what end?
    To play snare drum in the marching band. Other than jazz drum set there
    is no advantage in my opinion. And this is coming from an old dude who
    marched under D.C.I. Hall of Fame member Tom Float and was taught
    by a guy who marched in the Air Force Drum & Bugle Corps! I applaud
    the lines I see going matched when they are properly taught. Bravo!!

    Excellent performance. When I was in band in school half the band I was in wanted to goof around instead of work hard. So much more is accomplished when you have an entire band working hard. It also helps to have other advantages like having a big city band that way you can get plenty of sponsorships to bring in money for experienced staff. More money doesn't always win but if you have more people to help clean things faster, the cleaner it can be.

    Are they sponsored? Because they have some serious gear (and probably the finest percussion instructors). They sound incredible.
    These young people probably don’t realize how lucky they are. There are many talented and gifted musicians out there at very underfunded schools with little opportunity, whose talents are languishing.

    I understand that people think traditional grip is better, but most don't understand that when playing traditional, it needs to be played THE RIGHT WAY. A lot of drumlines play flat handed. That's one of the reasons my Drumlines always play matched. It's easier to play and clean matched than traditional. Teaching the basic fundamentals while learning to play traditional is a lot of work and everyone doesn't gravitate to it like others. Not saying that's why Vandegrift doesn't do it, but matched grip is better when building a Drumline and also when cleaning music.

    • @unfeadunicorn
      @unfeadunicorn 5 лет назад +5

      match grip is how you should play drums why do you think quints don't play traditional, because it's restricting and was used only for sling drums. "tradition" doesn't translate to skill

    • @whatamidoing8266
      @whatamidoing8266 5 лет назад +1

      Level 100 Magikarp imo, it’s easier to keep a single stroke roll consistent and fast with matched. So in some areas the grip can pertain to skill (maybe)

    • @gavingriffith6016
      @gavingriffith6016 5 лет назад

      @@unfeadunicorn I know matched grip is "better" to play and yeah traditional is called traditional for a reason. I still just think it looks way better. I know matched is better but it's just ugly to me.
