  • When Johnny Cale got to Hollywood at the behest of Leon Russell, as a sound engineer at Russell's Skyhill home studio on Skyhill Drive, he called his bandmates in Tulsa and regrouped. By February 1965, Cale had got Elmer Valentine, the owner of the Whisky A Go Go, to hire him... on the stipulation he changed his name. That's when JJ Cale became his moniker. The JJ Cale Trio got hired as entertainment at the 9th Annual Baseball Writers Banquet. Cale was such a hit in Hollywood that he was sent to the Atlanta, Georgia Whisky A Go Go, and became known as Mr. Excitement. After a second tour of duty in Atlanta Cale returned to Hollywood and recorded a pair of songs he and his drummer, Gary Sanders, wrote together. His bass player in his trio, Gary Gilmore was not credited on the contract sheet if he did indeed participate. Along with Cale on guitars were Tommy Tripplehorn (he became Gary Lewis & The Playboys guitarist) and Roger Tillison (he had a duo at the time called Gypsy Trips). The songs were recorded at Leon's home studio. Thefollowing November Cale would record the first of his three singles for Liberty Records. Cale and Leon shared production of the session.
