Eating at Parrilla La Brigada. A Famous and Classic Steakhouse in Buenos Aries

- I eat at and review Parrilla La Brigada a popular steakhouse in the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. For over three decades, the restaurant has been serving quality steak and cuts of meat so tender that they can be sliced with a spoon. From floor to ceiling, the establishment is covered with sports memorabilia and contains an ample Argentinean wine selection. The restaurant was even included on the 2021 list of the top 100 restaurants in Latin America having come in at number 83. I also discuss Don Julio, the greatest steakhouse in Buenos Aires, which some say is the best in the world.

Amazing meal at La Bridada ! I love how the waiter or owner popped into your video! At the end when you got to the bill amount and started to say $14,000 .. I was like WHAT??? until realized you were not talking about US dollars lol. Thank you so much for all your videos in 2023 James. May 2024 bring you great joy, adventure, perfect health and prosperity my friend
Thank you! I hope 2024 treats you good as well! Yeah, even on my trip, it took me awhile to get used to prices that sounded high, but were in actuality very affordable.
James, first of all Happy New Year! I'm watching this on 2 January! I've been to BA numerous times, the last being in 2018. This was before the horrible inflationary crisis began! Yes, today Ars1050 =$1! It's devastating for 95% of the population but great for tourists! Don't lose any sleep over NOT eating at Don Julio! It's extremely touristy with double the price of La Brigada steaks, limited menu, a lot of hype about "their beef"! Michelin ☆ is silly & out-of-place for Don Julio! Glad you ate at Parrilla Peña, I always enjoyed that restaurant! For me, Las Talas de Entrerriano gives you the best Argentina meat event! Enough said!
Thank you and Happy New Year! Yeah, the inflation is so crazy. Indeed, it's great for tourists, but I can't imagine living there with my savings in the bank losing so much value. I've heard similar things about Don Julio. I still want to check it out someday, but yeah, there are so many other great places for meat in the city.
That's insane! $36? What a deal. Thanks for finally posting it!
Thanks for watching! Yeah, it's crazy how affordable it was and believe it or not, it was one of the more expensive meals I had in Buenos Aires.
@@Jamesnu Wow! That IS insane. Good for you for finding such quality and cost, I felt like gold when Sam's club marked down their prime rib roasts the day after Christmas! LOL...

Hi James! My bf and I always watch your videos. We are from Argentina, and we were very excited about your video! However, we felt so sad when we saw your selection of places 🥲! Yes, going to Don Julio is almost impossible, even for those of us who live here. But, there are at least 20 places in Buenos Aires that I would go to before going to La Brigada. I hope you come back soon and can try a real Parrilla Argentina 🇦🇷
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support! Yeah, there are definitely a lot of great places that I didn't get to visit and I really want to go back someday. I had such a great time in Buenos Aires!
Happy new year James! The steak looked delicious and the ambience was top notch
Happy New Year! Absolutely! The steak was really good and being in such a uniquely decorated restaurant made for a great experience.
Hey James, Happy New Year Brother. I agree with you 100% of the textural element that a nice char adds to a steak. I noticed right away the lack of char of your T-Bone. Another great review man. I'm really happy I found your channel. You're growing really quickly, which I knew you would. You keep it simple and get the point across very well with great articulation without taking all my time up. Looking forward to what you bring us in 24. Cheers
Thank you! Yeah, I try to make each second count in my videos. I'm looking forward to what this year will bring. Indeed, a nice texture on a steak is a very important element.
Wonderful to experience an eating experience previously not shared but enjoyed by you sometime ago. Nicely done & enjoyable to watch. Forgive this long ago personal reference of my past travels. I was very lucky to have traveled extensively throughout Brazil in the late 1980's & I wish to share with you my good fortune of eating at numerous Sao Paulo steakhouses. While my memory may be faulty since my travel journals & notes have long been placed in storage, I remember the Sao Paulo Steakhouse named Bossi / Bassi which was among the best in South America. Your posting allowed me to unlock memories of the wonderful beef shared with business colleagues & dear friends of a past life era. Brazilians are/were very proud of the fact that their beef was/is "grass fed"; allowing for a richer flavor & hardy texture. Your video unlocked those memories for me. Thank you & Happy New Year! This is Peter; out!
Thank you and Happy New Year! Brazil seems like a very special place with a great culinary scene as well. It sounds like you had a great experience in that country. I really hope to visit it someday.
You got me thinking about that restaurant in Sao Paolo! About 30 some years ago I believe I ate there several times! I remember the steak Florentino, the morcilla , the provoleta.
Awesome video. So cool that you are able to review restaurants abroad as well. Wish you amazing success in 2024.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
Happy new year James! :)

Happy new year james. I agree under cooked is always better than over. Have had a few under what i like but usually just take it home and throw it on the grill. The price of everything is ridiculous now days..

Love it everything looked amazing ❤
It was an overall great meal and experience!
Not an expert by any means, but it appears Argentinian beef cooking methods are different than ours. Meat is not put directly over the flame, and it is cooked more slowly with no sear and usually rare. So the steak here seems to be in the classic Argentinian style. It might also explain why your meal took longer to arrive. Wishing you well in your pursuits in 2024, James. I always enjoy your videos.
Thank you so much! I hope 2024 is great for us all! Yeah, there are definitely differences between Argentinian steakhouses and the ones in the US, which I enjoyed experiencing.
Much to the contrary most Argentine s prefer their steak medium-well, Yuk Yuk
Happy New Year James! Unfortunately I would not have been able to eat such a rare steak, but the place looked very lively and fun. The waiter looked like a referee. Too bad you had to wait so long without even a glass of wine. The city looks really nice too.
Happy New Year! Yeah, that steak was pretty rare. It was almost too rare for me, but it was a great restaurant and experience. Plus, I really enjoyed the city.
I actually saw you in LIC at Partners Coffee on Jackson Ave. You actually waited for me to get up so you could take my table right near the lid/napkin station. It was a few weeks back. I couldn't place you at the time but realized who you were after I got the Court Sq. station.
Great videos and algo. always recommends your videos.

@@navsi3117 Yeah, there are definitely some restaurants that I want to make videos about in LIC in the future, but that day was all about taking it easy.
Nice sir. Ur a inspiration
Thank you!
Happy New Year!!!! You seem to speak like the locals there with pronouncing the names of restaurants and chefs. Wondering if your bread rolls were Pão de queijo which are made from cassava, milk and cheese? . Maybe a little cornmeal on it too. OR pan de yuca? I love learning about bread from everywhere. Wishing you a healthy 2024. Thank you for the video!
Happy New Year and thank you for watching! Yeah, I'm still not sure what those other rolls were, but they were at least very good!
I was thinking the same thing. In Argentina, they are called chipas, but in NYC they’re mostly found in Brazilian restaurants as páo de queijo, and they can also be found frozen in some higher end supermarkets. The tapioca (or cassava or yucca or manioc or whatever name you prefer) gives the bread a beautiful almost mochi-like chew.
Happy New Year James. Hope you have an excellent 2024. I personally would've send that steak back. But that's just me 😅
Happy New Year! I hope 2024 is good to you as well! Yeah, if I was a little more confident in my Spanish, I probably would've sent it back, but it was still pretty good.
I’m glad you finally made another video about Argentina 😂
Yeah, it only took 6 months. Haha!
We need a video from you at Yuu. That Japanese chef there looks out of this world
That's definitely a restaurant that I would like to try.
Happy New Year James. Wow! That is one thick steak! Yeah, it did look rare. Did you manage to finish it?
Happy New Year! Yeah, I almost ate the whole thing. There were some scraps on the sides of the bone that I probably could've ate.
That did look good man…glad all is goin well on here…this reminded me u travelled a while back…any future trips u lining up this year?
It was great! Yeah, I'll definitely be doing some traveling this year, but I still have to decide where.
So what you’re saying is that you need to make a reservation at Don Julio first and then reserve the flight that will get you to the restaurant just in time for the reservation.
Haha! Yeah, but to be fair, I booked my flight to Buenos Aires only 10 days before I traveled there. It was a bit short notice.
Nice video , James . Happy new year ! How on earth do the staff get their heads around tens of thousands of pesos , I don't know !
Thank you so much! Happy New Year!
Fantastic
Thanks for watching!
I really need to get to South America. Looks amazing!
Yeah, they have an amazing food culture down there!
What big, impressive plates of food! At least they didn’t have to extend the table at this place like they did after you ordered a bunch of meat in a restaurant in Paris.
Yeah, that was a pretty amazing feast! Good times!
La Brigada is Francis Ford Coppola favorite BA steakhouse! That being said, you still should've gone to Don Julio. DJ is considered by many as the best steakhouse in the world. To go all the way to BA and skip DJ is madness. My friend and I went for lunch and even without a reservation we were seated outside within minutes. I visited both DJ and La Brigada and DJ was a much better experience.
Nice! Yeah, I've heard occasionally you can almost walk right into Don Julio. Sadly, both times that I tried going, the wait was going to be hours. The next time I'm in Buenos Aires, I'll make it a point to dine at Don Julio.
I had some excellent steak in Buenos Aires but I thought the beef was even better in Montevideo Uruguay! Anyway- great video and I'm excited for more of your reviews in 2024!
Thank you so much! Yeah, if I had more time on my trip, I definitely would've gone over to Uruguay. It seems like an amazing place as well!
Yes, I ate at La Pulperia some time ago! For me, #1 in Montevideo. The restaurants in the Mercado del Puerto are all tourist rip-off joints!
I went to Munich just before Christmas and had to fly out a day earlier than I had intended to as one of the restaurants I wanted to visit was fully booked for the Friday. Really need to get some of these places booked early, especially at that time of year! Glad I did though, it was the best meal I had all year and also featured the best single dish, highlighting the humble Brussels sprout no less...
Nice! Yeah, with a lot of these destination type restaurants you really have to plan a visit in advance.
@@Jamesnu yep! This was even with booking everything three months in advance, was quite surprised that the restaurant was so booked up.
I like how you arent rude when criticising the food. Tbh I might have sent steak back to get cooked a little more, respectfully of course.
Thank you! Yeah, I probably should've sent it back to be cooked a bit more, but I was also a little intimidated with the language barrier. Still, the steak was pretty good as it was.
Thanks!
Great stuff James. Love your attitude and exploits.
Thank you so much! That's very kind and I really appreciate it!
I hope you visited a milonga somewhere along the way. :)
Love that cool Orient watch. 😀 As for the food, amazing! 🤩 14,000 Argentinian Pesos is now $18, which is incredible for a meal like this. $18 will barely buy you a burger and fries at a fast food outlet in the US. Argentina is definitely a good location for Americans to retire in - dollars are worth a lot there and there is less crime than in other Latin American countries. Also, the people are mostly of unmixed European descent.
what was the need for that incredibly racist last line of your comment?
Thank you for commentary. Argentina is a unique and interesting country but its mystique lies with the nation's gauchos* (cowboys) and the love of beef!!! Great review and I enjoyed watching your breakdown of that excellent steak. And I agree with you, better the steak slightly undercooked than overcooked. You can never walk back an overcooked steak. Wow!!
Thanks for watching! Indeed, Argentina has so much to offer. I really enjoyed my time there!
Did you mean gauchos!
@YASTravelsEatsWell i guess i did. No spell check for this writer!
I noticed that they tend to keep some of the fat on the steak. My mom usually does that. Not sure how that fat would satisfy casual diners but I'm used to it.
Yeah, sadly it doesn't work well with these types of steak. Personally I like my steaks on the rarer side of medium rare, so I'm a big fan of South American and Spanish beef which is traditionally cooked to be rare or blue. But it comes with the disadvantage that most of the fat doesn't render beyond the surface.
If the fat is well rendered, I believe it provides that much more glossy flavor to everything. This steak that he ate was a smidge undercooked for me, I'd rather have the outer a bit more well and the inner medium rare if I had to choose. (Unless I could take the rest home and reheat, *being that he was on vacation, I can't see that possible)
$36 for a great meal, 👍 WOW ❤❤❤❤❤
Yeah, it wasn't exactly what I was used to, but I do love good fat on a steak. That fat had really great flavor. Although, if the steak was cooked a bit more, the fat probably would've been even better.
Reminds me of the steaks from Tuscany. For me nothing beats the great US steak houses. Would love to see you review Fogo de Chao.
It's been awhile since I've been to Italy, but I'll definitely get back sometime soon. Yeah, I might check out that restaurant sometime.
Don Julios is good but there are many Parrillas in Buenos Aires that are just as good, but cost half the price of Don Julio. My favorite restaurant is Parrilla de Peña. Order the double ribeye and you must order the bread pudding. Incredible. And what are already ridiculously cheap prices due to inflation, exchanging U.S. Dollars at the Blue Dollar rate, at Casa de Cambios, makes an amazing exchange rate even better. Notwithstanding how inexpensive and great steaks are in Argentina, you will be hard pressed to find on a wine list / order a great of bottle of wine that will cost more than $25-$30.
Also love Parrilla Peña!
Absolutely! I still would like to go to Don Julio someday, but there are definitely a lot of other great places for steak in the city. I actually went to Parrilla Pena and really enjoyed it. Indeed, the prices for meat and wine are incredible.
James, one thing is certain, I suspect you did not see any transients loitering in the streets.!!!
This is funny, I was literally just in Buenos Aires too (got back yesterday). I was only there for a couple days though, and wasn't able to get in to Don Julio. I hadn't heard about La Brigada, but if/when I go back I'll check it out. I went to a place called La Carniceria - it doesn't have a star, but it's well-regarded by Michelin. The steak (a ribeye) was quite good, although to be honest it could not rival the best midtown steakhouses. I'm not sure if anywhere can rival NYC for steak. The price was right though.
Nice! I actually think I came across that restaurant when I was looking up places to eat at. Yeah, I really think NYC is pretty special for steak, but Argentina definitely has New York beat when it comes to value.
For the real Argentine meat experience go to Las Talas de Entrerriano! It's out in the suburbs of BA!
What is the prices like? Did they go up as you were waiting in line and eating?
Haha! Yeah, the inflation is crazy.
So when did you go to Argentina? I'm in Buenos Aires right now.
It was back in June of last year (2023). I hope that you're enjoying the city!
I am, but the mosquitos are eating me alive. I'll say this though. 32,000 pesos or however much you spent, is a crazy amount here. It's very very expensive. @@Jamesnu
@@yonatanben-chaim9747 I forgot that it's summer there. While the dinner was less than what I would pay for in NYC, it still was one of the more costly places I went to in Buenos Aires.
I hope when you were there you were getting your pesos through the black market rate. But I would say a cheap steak is about 9,000 and an expensive one is double that. The most I've paid at a parilla was 21,000 and this was without wine but included an appetizer. @@Jamesnu
Go to Parrilla Pena. Just as good and half the price of Don Julio. Make sure you get the bread pudding for dessert.

@@Jamesnu well,,, it kind of Does. How are you able to afford lodging, airfare, meals, Uber. Etc. ...would be a great video
@@valariewillis6000 Well at least with this trip to Buenos Aires the exchange rate was very favorable to the US dollar. Plus my flight was very cheap. That's partly why I decided to travel there.
I live in BA; I am glad you enjoyed La Brigada, but the place is far from being a top choice for any porteño. Don Julio is great but somewhat overrated if you ask me. I read a comment above about comparing Argentine steak to a steak in a good steakhouse in midtown Manhattan. The thing is that the comparison doesn't make sense. Different cooking methods, and we don't season steaks so much. Having said that, I prefer NYC steak! But the experience of an asado, when you taste other meats rather than just steak, is second to none in Argentina. That's what you need to try next time. I hope you had a great time in BA.
BTW, that steak was way undercooked! I would have sent it back. The milanesa napolitana you had the night before looked great, but that was a lot of fried food for one person and the wine (Vasco Viejo) was definitely part of the reasons why you may have felt sick the day after 😄. Thanks James!
I really enjoyed reading your perspective! Thank you for such a great comment! Yeah, I kind of wish that I went with a group of people so that we could order a variety of meats, since that type of experience is just not found in most US steakhouses, but I still really enjoyed my meal at La Brigada.
Yeah, that milanesa was good, but it was just too much! Combined with the wine, it was a fun and filling meal, but I didn't feel the best the next day. Haha!
What do you mean by "we don't season steaks so much"? How do you think they season steaks in NYC? And what is the difference between cooking methods? What NYC steakhouses have you been to?

Are you able to pay the 'blue rate' exchange in USD at restaurants? I'm sure they'd prefer it just to save the hassle
I'm not sure on that one, but it wouldn't surprise me if a restaurant accepted USD since it's a much more stable currency.
Argentinia must be close to Canadia.

Fair enough. If I was a bit better at Spanish, I probably would've sent it back as well, but it was still pretty good.
Were you, in the fullness of your research and discussions with staff and perhaps others, ever able to determine what if any purpose may be served by this waiter savaging the strip steak with a spoon?
I think it was just to showcase how tender the steak was and it was very tender!
🙏
How much is 1487.00 Argentine pesos in American dollars? 👀
Six months ago when I went to the restaurant it was about $30, but today with inflation, it's much less.
If you exchange dollars at the blue Rate at any Casa Cambió then it’s about $15 U.S. I was there in 2022 when the official rate was about 180 pesos to the dollar but the Blue Rate was about 300. Now the Blue Rate is about 900 pesos to the dollar.
