      But that is closer to how people actually drive. Nobody drives on a road trip like Kyle does. People are going to stop at 20%, maybe 15%. Nobody is going down to 5% or less. People want to drive for a couple of hours then stop for 15 minutes for a restroom break or 30-45 minutes for a meal break. The lightning can do that. In comfort and without stress (especially now that you can use the supercharger network). People don't know anything about charging curves or anything like that. They just want to be able to plug in whenever they get low, whatever low may mean to them, or plug in when they need a restroom break, and get the same charging speed all the time. They hardly understand that different cars have different charging limits.

    • @ab-tf5fl
      @ab-tf5fl 5 месяцев назад

      I think the answer to that question comes down to human factors. The best road trip experience is not the fastest one, but one where the needs of the car and the human are aligned. That is, when you are tired and need to go to the bathroom, that is when the car needs charging, and when you're hungry, that matches the point in the trip where you need a deep charge. And, conversely, when you're refreshed and have the energy to drive a long time without stopping, the car also has enough charge in its battery to be able to drive a long time without stopping.
      Because every human has different needs, there is no one answer to the question of whether it's better to have more shorter stops or fewer longer ones. It all depends on the people, and even the same person, it might very depending on how tired you are that day, and what time of day you are getting out (which influences how the charge times will align with meal times).
      I personally like the pattern of going 200 miles on the first leg of each day, with 100-mile stints for each segment thereafter. On my most recent trip, I did followed this pattern as much as I could, but I had one section where, due to lack of charging infrastructure, I had no choice but to charge to 100% and cover 175 miles without a charge stop. Yet, my body still needed bathroom and rest breaks, and I found myself stopping multiple times on this stretch anyway, even though I wasn't charging.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 5 месяцев назад +2

      @@ab-tf5fl I've heard that perspective about more, shorter stops echoed a lot more frequently in the last 5 years, and it makes me wonder whether it isn't more about people adjusting their expectations to match the needs of the car. To me, that's still being tethered to the charging infrastructure, and it's very much a Tesla-specific experience/perspective.
      Yes, people in the past sometimes made a half dozen stops in a 175-mile stretch, but that was because they wanted or needed to. The car's needs never really factored in. Heck, I still do that in my Bolt EV today, but those extra stops are almost never about charging.
      Those short stops are definitely welcome sometimes, but they shouldn't be every stop. And in this case, it's showing a real weakness on the part of the Cybertruck. Assuming the Silverado Team can find full-power charging (which appears to look unlikely on this trip), a 10-min stop in either truck will produce the same results in terms of adding range. The difference is, if the Silverado stays for 20 or even 30 minutes, it is doubling or tripling its gains, while the Cybertruck starts suffering from serious diminishing returns.
      So regardless of your personal preference, the Silverado works fine for either. The Cybertruck on the other hand only really shines for those who want to make numerous short stops.

      @ArtiePenguin1 5 месяцев назад

      Agreed. I think all participants and especially Kyle are failing to factor in just how much time it takes exiting the highway. It's usually better to do fewer but longer duration charging stops, as long as the charging speed doesn't tank that much.
      I guess my view is a little bit skewed driving the Kia EV6 where I can charge pretty fast up to 90%... ⚡

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ArtiePenguin1 Yeah. I think Kyle's strategy is sound if all you're trying to do is make it to your destination as quickly as possible. The Cybertruck can maintain an average charging speed of 240 kW if you stay between 0% and 40%. The Silverado 4WT should average ~250 kW from 0% to 80%, so the 3WT (assuming they can find chargers working at full power) should average ~210 kW from 0% to 80%.
      So in terms of average charging power, Kyle's team can beat the Silverado EV 3WT by making about three to four times as may stops in the Cybertruck, so the question is whether they can take a quarter of the time to get to charger, activate it, and get back on the road again.

    • @flipadavis
      @flipadavis 5 месяцев назад +10

      They should make a video about filling up when not on a road trip, which is 90%+ of most driving. See how many trips to the gas station the gas team makes vs. the EV team makes during a month. Then add up all the minutes the gas team spent at the pump that month vs. how much time the EV team spends plugging in in their garage over that same month.

      @davidbeppler3032 5 месяцев назад

      @@philb5593 EVs have zero range anxiety. ICE have a lot of range anxiety. I have never walked out to my Tesla and had to ask myself if a 1/16th tank of energy would be enough to get to work or if I need to be a few minutes late again to fill up. Millions of people face that question daily driving an ICE.
      On another note, what if you owned a company? You towed a TM3 on a trailer every day. It was a long haul. 800 miles. Would you pay $50k on a new ICE and then spend $233 a day in fuel?
      Or would you spend $70k on an EV and then $150 on electricity, with an hour refuel time?
      In 2 years the ICE costs $60,500 in fuel and $14,500 in truck payments and $1200 in maintenance? $75,200
      In 2 years the EV costs $48,000 in fuel and time and $20,000 in payments and $200 in maintenance? $68,200
      It is just math. Paying the worker $35/hr to drive seems nice.
