      Been crocheting for 69 years and this method is new to me - fab! Have to say you hold your hook the way I was taught was the only correct way and doesn’t it look so much more effortless than other methods I’ve seen on here?

      @linwhitworth4794 my great- grandmother taught me to hold my hook that way, too. It's ever so much easier on the hands and better for maintaining consistent tension, too!

    Oh my, whoever created this "turning-not" chain, he/she is a genius.
    That gives so much relief bc of that nice edge you get when next row ends.
    As someone said already, that gives a second chance to crocheting again for so many people.
    I even decided to repurpose one of my old unfinished sweaters just to enjoy that kind of turning 😄
    Also, when combined with chainless foundation, that gives literally perfect knitted fabric.
    Gorgeous! Many thanks for sharing that 😊

      How do you do this for a single? Wouldn’t this give you too much height?

    • @beckasmith6725
      @beckasmith6725 9 месяцев назад +7

      Inexperienced crocheter here, and the most frustrating part of the turning chain is finding the right stitch at the end. This is what's so appealing to me in this video -- it appears that stitch will be much more identifiable -- but I also wonder how you adjust for single and half doubles. I struggle with tension also.

    • @cainkim42
      @cainkim42 9 месяцев назад +5

      for a single you just do an extended single. which is just extending your loop longer and instead of chaining just put your first single crochet in the first stitch.@@robinmoore7202

    • @cainkim42
      @cainkim42 9 месяцев назад

      For a half double you can just put one stitch instead of two. and you can put three for a triple. it works for just about all stitches.@@beckasmith6725

  • @Vmurph
    @Vmurph 9 месяцев назад +33

    I just chain ONE (and turn) and then do a US double (UK treble) stitch in the very FIRST hole. It makes a VERY straight edge, HOWEVER, it also makes the first stitch identical to the others, which looks much neater.

    Learning this stacked single crochet is what convinced me to start crocheting again. I made a throw with some yarn I purchased several years ago and I love how easy it all was, and how the edges look. I also don't do the chain one turn for single crochets anymore either. Thank goodness for people like you who share the knowledge!

    This makes so much sense and always thought how is the 2 or 3 better than a proper treble stitch. I think even if you just manipulate a straight forward treble it still looks better. I've used a standing stitch before, but after crocheting for 50+ years I would not always remember to do a standing stick and do the chain, just because my brain is trained that way, and realise after I'd done a row or 2.

    I just watched this video a few hours ago and tried using this turning method. Its a game changer for me!!! My stitch count has been perfect from row to row. My sides are now gorgeous in my eyes. Very straight. I was always dropping or gaining stitches trying to make the sides look decent, not anymore!!! All i can say is thank you!! I am left-handed and watched the right-handed video with no problems. Thanks for having a left-handed video out there.

    I'm so glad you are sharing this with people Tracy. I have had the odd pattern (I'm in the U.S.), that instructed me to do this, and I really preferred it as well. I NEVER liked the 'chain business', as it looked SO unfinished! When I first was instructed to do it this way several years ago....I couldn't understand how it took me so long to come across this! Why was I chaining all this time!!! 🤦‍♀ I'm not the type to 'envision' things well, but I certainly can do as instructed....and I absolutely know what I prefer. I'm sure most people are really happy you have shared this and are as appreciative as I was when I first learned of it!! 👍 💕

    Thank you! You're right about it being a game changer. And it looks beautiful. Now I'm going to watch the "lefty" version.
    I learned to crochet from my grandmother in the early 1960's. She being right handed and me being left handed made this a bit of a struggle, but with her patience I finally learned. What I didn't realize until about a year ago was that for all of those years I was doing some strange Frankenstein of crochet. Part right, part left, but it worked. So now whenever I want to learn something new, it helps to have both versions; right and left.
    So thanks again and I have subscribed.

    I’m immediately implementing this ending stitch instead of the chain-3.
    I’m still a beginner (on my 3rd project), and I’ve only had issues finding the beginning chain-3 stitch to start the next row. I was just sitting here, taking 10 mins to try and find the proper way to go into the stitch (sometimes, the 3 chains turn to make the back face me, so I get disoriented on where to even stick my crochet hook. 😂)
    This alternative stitch is _SO_ much more convenient and it’s more straightforward. It also works as you scale it up for longer stitches, so this is my life now. 😂
    Much appreciation to you for making this video! 😊🧶
    *Edit:* I just remembered seeing this stitch a couple weeks ago in passing whilst doing preliminary research into different stitches. Here in the US, this is called a stacked single crochet. But they didn’t explain it halfway as well as you did, so I dismissed it entirely as something beyond my skillset. 😅 Guess I was wrong!

    Thank you for this. I have been looking for an alternative to the "chain 3" especially for my granny squares. Thank you for sharing 😊👍

    I have been doing this for years and it’s the only way for me too. It does look better, to me, in the finished work. I’m glad you’re showing it to get the word out to more ppl who may be new to crochet or whatever. Cheers

    I found this method on another RUclips video and I absolutely agree with you, this method is a game changer and I am fairly new to crochet. Equally Ireally like the foundation chain and foundation row as one operation. No more tight foundation chains.

    This is fantastic! I hate the way it looks when I use the usual method of chain 3. Now my work looks so neat and tidy. Thank you so much, your instructions are easy to follow. Definitely subscribing. 😊

    I have been doing this! I didn’t think that anyone else did it, and I also just do a chain two if I was starting a new row like the old way. Thank you 🙏❤️🥰

    I've been using stacked SC for US DC, but i think it looks a bit better when, before finishing the first SC, remove the hook, put it thru both loops from the left and twist the hook into position. Then finish the SC, yo, pull thru, go thru loop closest to you, and do a SC.
    Same, but with a twist :)
