  • Cheapest (Best?) DeWALT battery isn't from DeWALT (Thiss is it!)
    As long-time watchers know my biggest issues with DeWalt has always been how expensive their battery system is. Now imagine if you could buy DeWalt but NOT get sucked into spending ridiculous amounts on batteries AND still get a 1.5 year warranty?

    Can’t agree Bear. I have had great experience with my DW batteries. Have worked them hard for years and all still going strong. For the work they have done they are great value, at least to me. People forget that a few dollars extra for a battery that will be punished for years is really an insignificant issue. I trie the clone batteries twice and both failed after about three charges. In both cases a cell in the pack started spilling its guts. Made me get perspective on how the DW batteries are worth every penny. They just work and last.

    It's interesting that the DW tries to go when the battery depletes - you could hear the humming even though it didn't have the beans to turn the bit anymore. I'm in the Porter Cable lithium cordless and when the batteries are depleted they straight turn off - I always figured as a protection to the cells since I've always heard fully fully discharging to zero or near it is supposedly really bad for lithium cells. I would have expected the same behavior from the DW being from the same parent company.

    I have the Dewalt 20v stuff, I like it for what it is. Was planning on getting into the Milwaukee lineup, but the fiancee bought me the Dewalt contractor set when we bought our house; couldn't really tell her the gift wasn't "good enough."

    •  4 года назад

      All branded batteries whether Ryobi or Milwaukee use the same 2-3 batteries (usually Sanyo or Samsung), all the higher ah rating batteries have higher quality cells in them, but there is very few reliable battery manufacturers so they always end up with the same 18650s. What you pay for when you buy different brand-name batteries is the name. With generics, they put in whatever they feel like it, sometimes you get metal cylinders filled with sand.

    You can’t be sure what batteries are used in the No-name power packs. Project Farm tested name brand (Samsung, LG, Sony, Panasonic) against 2 China made batteries. The China batteries didn’t meet their printed specs but cost a lot less. Project Farm performed drain tests on the batteries. If the batteries are light, it generally meant they didn’t have enough materials in them to perform as rated.

    I know this is a late comment but the run time from DeWalt and comparable batteries may be similar new, but the advantage DeWalt batteries have are how long will they last. I live in the desert area (and yes it is a dry heat), where my tools in the back of my covered truck can go above 130° which will kill most batteries quickly. I was a Panasonic tool die hard fan until they were hard to find and were discontinued. The batteries always lasted 5 or more years. I gave DeWalt a try when they started there 20 volt max line and have expanded to almost all of the 20 volt and some 60 volt tools. Almost all DeWalt items have a date of manufacture stamp somewhere on them for warranty reasons. I checked some of my first 2 AH batteries for their age and found 3 of them were dated from 2014, the day I bought my first set. They still hold a charge and run almost as long as my latest 2022 batteries. It is not how many minutes they last per charge but how many years will they provide like new power. This is where the quality and price are worth it.

    Bottom line, if a power pack has Samsung, LG, Panasonic or Sony batteries, like the standard 18650 ones, they are typically rated for 10 years shelf life or 500 charges (won’t be 100% retention in the last half). If a pack has other batteries, you simply don’t know the life longevity, and that it performs as rated, like 4 mAh. Unless you do drain tests using a meter on a power pack or individual batteries, you don’t know how they are performing. Anyone who says “they last” isn’t giving measured results.

  • @dlkline27

    Life of the battery depends on the quality of the cells inside. DeWalt uses some of the best cells in their batteries whereas off brand batteries must necessarily use cheaper cells in order to provide those lower prices for their products. This has been true since way back in the NiCad days. I never tried an off brand lithium but I did try NiCads once with disappointing results.

    I've been thinking about this lately! I have a bunch of different tools from a bunch of different brands that all need new batteries! The solution may be to buy knockoff DeWalt batteries and use adapters for all the other tool brands. The problem with adapters has always been that you can't always find the right tool-adapter-battery combination for your needs. DeWalt to other brands seems to be the most available adapter. You can't usually use a different brand battery with a DeWalt tool but this battery solves that problem! Waitley is another well thought of battery with an even lower cost!

    My comment isn't about Dewalt, but about some generic 18v batteries for Ryobi and they were, I think, 4.0AH or close to that, and I bought them thru Amazon, fully knowing that they were not Ryobi OEM batteries. The didn't last very long at all; quit charging, and I sent them back and got my money back...thankfully. I know that there are some dependable replacement batteries out there and maybe these THISS batteries will prove themselves dependable, so thanks, Red, for this review. My own personal thoughts on these larger AH batteries is that they are just too heavy for my 67 yr. old arms to hold onto for any length of time. I just do wood crafts and projects for the home so I do not need the extra
    run time that these bigger batteries supply. by the time I run down a fully charged 2.0Ah battery, this old man needs a break..LOL..!!

    I have a ten year old DeWalt drill that came with two batteries. One no longer holds enough a charge to be used for anything but a electric screwdriver. The drill itself is fine and I'm not a pro so buying aftermarket batteries makes sens until the drill itself no longer works. I decided though that for new tools I will not be buying into the DeWalt ecosystem (unless I were to for some reason switch line of work and go pro) and go with less expensive batteries.

Squaretrade refunded my $$$. No headaches. Most items I buy on ebay or amazon I buy with squaretrade or other insurance. Its been great. You should consider that option. 90% of my tools I got on the gray market I got a "gray market warranty", guess I coined the term.

    If I may indulge in sharing (more like ramble on) my experience with Dewalt and Dewalt batteries....
    I am an infrequent power tool user but I like DIYing to save money and learn. BTW, that's why I like this channel. When I was younger, my journey with cordless tools started with the Black and Decker 20V Lithium system because it was, well, less expensive. I didn't have the benefit of RUclips or a knowledgeable person to advise me on what to buy and more important why one was better than the other. As time went on, I grew frustrated with the BD because the drill would bog down when driving lag screws and then strip out the heads because it just wants to go fast but had inadequate torque. Then one day, Lowes had a great a great sale on an 18V nicad drill and Impact driver set and I snagged it. When I put it to use, I immediatedly fell in love with Dewalt because it had the power and torque to drive long screws at slow speed without bogging down. I wasn't interested in any other brands because Dewalt proved superior to the BD, was able to do everything I needed it to do, and I had invested in their battery system. As time on, I realized that the nicad batteries were dying and developing a memory as they are prone to do. I resisted buying new batteries because they were cost nearly as much as the tool and battery together. By that time, Dewalt had moved on to the 20V Li-on system. So I then started purchasing tools under the 20V system thinking I'll get 18V to 20V adapter to continue using my 18V tools with the 20V Li-ion batteries. However, the battery adapter was an expensive $40+ item which I didn't feel was a fair price considering what you get. So I waited for the price of the adapter to drop below $20 which is a price I was willing to pay. However, the price has never dropped even to this day. Recently, my old 18V Dewalt tools got new life because third parties have started selling compatible 18V Li-ion batteries at a very reasonable price that could be charged by the Dewalt 18V "nicad" charger. I bought 2 ea. 5 mah batteries for less than $65 shipped. They work better than the 18V Dewalt Nicads when new.
    To make a long story short, I was happy with Dewalt at the beginning, then I soured on Dewalt because their battery replacement were too expensive, then it went further downhill when they switched to the non compatible 20V platform, and then I hated them because their 18 to 20V adapter was unreasonably expensive. Now that I am able to get 18V Li-ion batteries at a reasonable price from 3rd parties, I am a Dewalt fan again. I don't know how Dewalt compares with other higher end brands with Milwaukee because I've never owned them. I just know that I am happy with Dewalt again. Perhaps the bear can do a torque comparison video among the various brands. I haven't seen any coverage of that aspect of performance.

    • @denoftools
      @denoftools  5 лет назад +1

      I'm trying to find a good way to test torque that doesn't require a $2,500 torque tester. I'm not the smartest bear out there but I fairly clever and a big fan of DeVinci'esque devices so I'm trying to come up with something. But as to your journey with DW, sad to say but I'd call that par for the course.

    • @godblessthelessfortunate3175
      @godblessthelessfortunate3175 5 лет назад

      @@denoftools Perhaps an expensive instrument for empirical data is not necessary. Maybe start off with a simple relative comparison of how easily each brand can drive a 4 or 5 inch lag screw at low speed? I don't know, maybe they all can. Then start increasing the length/girth of the screw until there's a differentiation. It's not scientific but suffice for a relative comparison to each other.

  • @DropDeadFrederick
    @DropDeadFrederick 5 лет назад +1

    Technically they're really not bypassing anything. They're just using a temp/cell balancing controller that can talk properly to the tool and the charger. The charger would look at that when you try to charge the pack to make sure the cells aren't too hot. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think the tools themselves actually check that though. I don't know for sure but I don't think the DeWalt 20V packs record the number or charge cycles either but I could be wrong about that.
    Most likely THISS didn't cherry pick a battery to send you either. They're probably using cells that have a slightly higher rating than a comparable DeWalt battery, but to really do an apples to apples test you would need to test two brand new never used batteries, one from each vendor. You'd also need to do a long term test and see which pack starts reducing it's fully charged capacity over time (just like with a laptop battery).
    I have quite a few DeWalt 20V batteries in various capacities so I won't be buying these THISS batteries. If THISS would come out with a strictly 20v version of the new FlexVolt 12Ah battery I'd pick up a few though. Hell, make it a 20Ah battery and I'd be all over it! Why? For my DeWalt leaf blower! :D My one and only complaint about their leaf blower is that their existing batteries just don't have enough oomph to last long enough in a cool fall day where you're trying to clean up a yard filled with wet leaves. Last fall I had to relegate the dewalt to light duty and buy a gas powered backpack leaf blower to get the job done not because it couldn't blow the leaves, but because the batteries just didn't last long enough to finish the job. :(

    To be fair, DeWalt's 5 amp hour battery two pack retails for basically the same as Makita. I just think Makita's batteries are a bit higher quality. They tend to charge faster and last longer on a charge. Also, Makita usually has the decency to include a 3 amp hour battery or two in their kits. DeWalt often sticks you with a lone dinky little 1.5 or 2 amp hour battery if you're lucky.

    Try the same test but throw both in a freezer for a hour. Us "professionals" use brands like Milwaukee because they work awesome in sub zero, or even very hot weather. Knockoff batteries usually work the same in average conditions, but in extreme scenarios, they lack.

    • @denoftools
      @denoftools  5 лет назад

      Phillip, no lithium batteries work "awesome" when frozen. They hardly work at all. It's the physics of lithium. Freezing your batteries is a good way to kill them. Using them in cold weather is another matter. While being used they produce heat, but it's still not good for them. I've done a lot of work with cells like this, I used to build my own drones and electric bikes, and I can tell you for a fact that there is nothing that the name brands can do short of putting a heater pack in the battery that will change the laws of physics.

    The heat load limiter on the batteries is more about preserving the actual battery cells. In turn it does kind of protect the drill motor. But you can still run a drill motor with a inefficient charge and it will still work without damaging it. My concern with these which is why I have never bought any is the longevity of the battery being destroyed by the heat load over time. I feel like their recovery rate is going to deplete rapidly under heavy use. So yeah maybe you saved 10 or 15 bucks up front, but you just wasted $40 because now you got to go buy another battery pack in a few months because the cells are fried

    I'm not sure why you have this bad opinion of DeWalt's service. I've had nothing but great experiences with them. I owned a contracting company with 27 employees and I supplied them all with DeWalt tools. Before that I ran a similar size company and purchased all DeWalt tool for them also. The point I'm trying to make is that I dealt with a lot of DeWalt tools and their service. And it should go without saying that I purchased DeWalt tools for my personal use; many of them off eBay. I purchased one set that was NOS and had sat on a self for more than a year. Neither battery would hold a charge. I brought them to the DeWalt service center and they replaced them on the spot at no charge, and that is a typical experience for me with them. So what have they done to you to instill such hostility towards them?

    • @denoftools
      @denoftools  5 лет назад +1

      I don't go just off of my personal experience. When doing a statistical analysis that is a bad idea as your data set is just one person. I put in a lot of time reading comments, market data reports, BBB reports and any comments I can find online. So my information is not just based on how one rep may have treated me it's on the company as a whole and how they respond or don't, to the consumer. The best example for this is when I tell people that my family had a Ford Pinto when I was growing up. It was the best selling car of the time and we never had an issue with ours. So if I went just on my personal experience I would have to recommend that as a reliable and safe car. See what I mean?

  • @raitchison
    @raitchison 5 лет назад

    I'm thinking that high heat and deeper discharge means the batteries won't last as long. Lithium Ion batteries don't like to get hot and REALLY don't like to be discharged beyond a certain point.
    Still for the price even if they last just half as long you're still making out. And if you're mindful & careful about how you use them you might be able to get them to last as long as the DeWALT ones.
    I may pick up a couple Thiss LXT "Replacement" batteries just to screw around with.

    I don't think that battery from the Chinese seller is "gray market". More likely it's counterfeit (just like the one you tested but in a pretty yellow shell). Same goes for the ones on ebay. They probably work okay for a while but I wouldn't be surprised if they're done after 30 or 40 charges. Besides Ryobi that you mentioned, I believe Ridgid batteries were on sale this week at HD for 2 for $99. That's a pretty reasonable price for legit batteries for a legit tool.

    Now, Ha Ha, I bought several DEWALT Cordless Tools many years ago when 18v first came out. Removable Batteries with Power so you could keep working was something we all wanted but the few out there were WAY Expensive. I’m a Tradesman so I take care of my stuff, Especially Tools. My 18v stuff still works fine, but the 10 Batteries had dwindled down to four, more like Three. I have the adapter for 20v from LOWES in my watch list and will be looking for 20v batteries soon. That’s the Long winded Intro...
    DEWALT makes great Tools for a reasonable price and many other companies now a Days. I never considered a Knock-off until now, I’ll probably get Genuine DEWALT, but I’m gonna research them.

Actually almost any company that just "pops up". The warranty is one place where you want the "Name Brand" to mean something.... Hopefully thissbatteries last longer then the website itself did. Then again you seemed to mention most of the worrisome stuff toward the end. Maybe some more tests of batteries that have a longer history if such a thing exists? Any third party battery manufacturers that have been around for longer then 10 years?

      Yeah but the problem with AvE is his testing methods and his summary. He states a bunch of stuff as fact that often are either not relevant or in some cases are totally false. He called the cells in the Herc generic when they were clearly Samsung. And in that video, he noted "flaws" in the generic cells that were a non-issue but he talked like they were a make or break issue. Read through the comments and you will see guys with electrical and engineering degrees call him out on this.

    I know you talk about how high the cost of Dewalt batteries are but have you paid attention to the cost of a Milwaukee battery? Holy crap!
    I have a lot of Dewalt cordless stuff but I have a couple of specialty Milwaukee cordless like a expansion Pex tool that does up to 3” pex pipe. Today I got it out and thought, I need to get a second battery for it. I came with a M18 4ah. So I went to HD because they have Milwaukee and it blew my mine how much more they want compared to a Dewalt, both a 5ah.
    5ah Milwaukee was almost as high as Dewalts new 60 volt. And don’t get me started on what Milwaukee wants for their M18 12ah. Ridiculous!!!

    I see this is a 4 year old video, but I just saw it today. Without a time machine, I can't comment on it any sooner.
    You say the argument about the warranty doesn't make sense, Maybe it doesn't. I didn't really listen to it because I have never made that argument. I have never heard anyone make that argument. The reality is this...
    I dd not choose black and yellow so many years ago because of the warranty. Over 25 years, I have never made a warranty claim. Most of the time that is because their tools don't break on me (and that is the reason I stay on the platform), bit the one time a tool did break on me, I had neither the time nor the patience to go through a warranty claim process. With exceptions, most hand power tools cost between 100 and 300 dollars. The time would have to waste dealing with warranty people is worth more to me than that. In this case, it was an impact driver that I bought the week they released it for a hundo (the 850). The 845 had just come out, and I think that was rolling out for a buck 20. I just spent the buck 20, bought a new impact and moved on. I know I am going to do this, so warranty means nothing to me.
    In any case...
    I don't know about 4 years ago, but here in the future ebay has some DeWalt authorized dealers. Some are and some aren't. But of you are buying on ebay, you should know full well that you should care as little about warranty as I do, because it is a coin flip on ebay. But even for those who care about warranty and will spend two weeks on the phone with Debbie the Time Life operator when their tools break...batteries are a different animal. The last time I bought batteries, I bought them on ebay. I got a two pack of XR 5ah batteries...for 70 bucks. That's 35 bones per battery. Personally, I probably would not waste my time redeeming a warranty for 300 bucks. But I can't imagine anyone who would do so over 35.
    So, "I buy DeWalt because of the warranty" is probably a bad argument. I can't say you are wrong there. It's just that I have never heard anyone make that argument. I but DeWalt because, neck and neck with Milwaukee, they make the best tools and as much as I beat on them, I have only been able to kill ONE in 25 or more years.
    That just got long. This is the second time I have gotten on a roll responding to one of your videos today. Meh, the comments are good for your channel and I have the time, because I am not on the phone fighting with warranty people.

    I have had this Black and Decker 20volt drill for a couple of years. I have 2 2 amp hour batteries for it. I was looking at the Dewalt and it looks exactly the same except it's yellow and the plugin blocks on the batteries are slightly different. Looks like a little time with a Dremel tool and you could have the batteries interoperable. I don't remember what I paid for the drill but I think around 50 dollars. Now I was looking for a Hex Driver and I looked at Ryobi and it was 79.00 and I'm not all that impressed by Ryobi. Then I saw that Home Depot had the DeWalt Hex Driver and it was 109 dollars but it came with a tool bag, oh goodie. Then I saw online at Home Depot the Black and Decker Hex driver that was the exact match to the Dewalt offering 59.00. I pulled the trigger on the B&D. Now after watching this I was looking on eBay and that battery that you just demoed for us. The B&D version of the aftermarket/grey market is going for 24.50 shipped. I'm not a tradesman, I'm a Server Administrator, but I do use my tools to keep my cars and my two Harley's running and for chores around the house. I'm not going to jump on the DeWalt 20Volt bandwagon when B&D has pretty much the same tools for almost 1/2 the price.

    Could it also big case that even the DeWalt batteries are made by the very same company but in order to have the DeWalt name there is a heavy markup a very perfect example would be Snap-on and Matco Tools, they are Irwin drill bits but with the Snap-on or Matco name they cost three times as much but still there are Irwin manufactured drill bits with a Snap-on or Matco logo on the. case.
    Just like the Carlyle wrenches that are manufactured by. Infar tools in Taiwan but if you get them through Channellock brand name they are the very same wrench at 60% of the cost. Until you see the inside of those batteries one can only Wonder if they are the same battery manufactured for DeWalt and numerous other names, money never sleeps in the manufacturing business.
    Another good thought is if DeWalt knew that you were running a battery of another brand could it void the warranty on the tool itself, I just recently found out let many impact sockets are not warrantied if they're used on a hand ratchet, which is a very foolish thing to me but basically if you tell them the socket broke with very little torque using a hand wrench they will not warranty the impact socket which makes me wonder if it could be in the print of a DeWalt power tool that using a battery from another supplier could void the warranty

    I use DW 20 v tools a lot and frequently under heavier load applications. I did buy a seemingly good clone from Amazon. It performed well a couple of times and I was impressed. But on the third charge it showed faulty. I took it apart and two of the cells were oozing their vital bodily fluids out. I took out the good cells and use them in an LED area work light. I didn’t complain or ask for a refund but did leave experience feedback. I purchased another one and just use it for my Bluetooth speaker and usb charger. The test you did does not really speak to durability. I have several DW batteries for a whole range of their shop and yard tools plus 2 Flexvolt for my 60 v saw which is a beast. Even when heavily used in recip saw etc. my DW batteries have never failed. The clones are interestingly priced but my experience is to pay a bit more and use real DW batteries. Months later: The second clone also failed after about 5 charges. Battery failed after a heavy work session. 2 leaking cells….. again. If you do buy clones, I suggest using them in low stress uses like Bluetooth speaker or small bench vac and keep the DW batteries for serious use.

    I bought dewalt flexvolt battery packs on eBay cuz they were the cheapest.. I would be worried about charging those no name brand batteries.. Ave did a review of some and they didn't have good charging protection... So to save a couple bucks vs a fire...I'll spend a little bit more as long as they are dewalt. Never even thought about a warranty...

    • @denoftools
      @denoftools  5 лет назад +1

      And that right there is yet another reason I stopped watching AVE. He has is biased towards high-end tools and kowtows to the "Tool Bro" mentality. The charger is the unit with the brains and it is the part that controls charging. The circuit on the battery controls discharge, hence why it got so hot, they are letting it run longer than it really should. The only way to get a fire from charging would be to rupture the cell or a damaged charger, but that could pop any battery. Here is a better question for you, you are buying packs on ebay to save money but think you are spending a few bucks more to get a name brand right? Those are grey market, you are actually MORE at risk with those. You don't know where they came from you don't know if they are real fakes or defective returns.
      As I said in the video, I'm not endorsing these batteries, I'm just putting the info out there. I don't have a lot of dewalt products so I don't really have a dog in this fight. But I just want to make sure you are making your choice with all the information.
